"They just might be the dream cast for Luis Valdez's "Zoot Suit," a musical that dramatizes the Los Angeles of the 1940s with its pachuco gangsters, big band jazz, racial tensions and the looming, violent background of World War II.

"Learn to make something out of nothing," Valdez told an audience of nearly 100 teenagers Saturday at Hartnell College in Salinas. The high school students from across Monterey County have been cast in three productions of his play that will be performed at three county locations in April and May."

"I started sewing when I was 4 years old. I was using my mother's sewing machine when I turned 10, and in college I earned extra money by making and mending clothes. I would buy $5 suits from thrift stores, and then rip the seams apart and reconstruct the jackets and pants to fit me.

Zoot suits - which are an icon of Latino culture - were hard to find. In the Hispanic community our fathers, grandfathers, and uncles wore such ensembles; they're part of our identity. So a friend, Jay Salas, and I started making them in 1997.

"Between puffs off a menthol cigarette, director Kinan Valdez coolly considers whether "Zoot Suit," a play written by his father Luis Valdez, is the most popular Chicano play of all time. After a brief pause, Valdez, says, "I would think at this point, yeah." Valdez, 34, is the director of the plays latest revival, which opened last month at San Juan Bautistas El Teatro Campesino, the farmworkers theater founded by Luis Valdez. The production runs through Sept. 16."
