“Spanish speakers in Winston-Salem soon will be able to flip to a new TV program geared for them.

But unlike the Spanish-language cable channels that offer melodramatic novelas (soap operas) with Mexican actors, European soccer matches or news from Latin America, this one will have more local flavor.

Winston-Salem’s government channel, WSTV-13, plans to broadcast a public-service program called Tu Comunidad (Your Community) in Spanish. The goal is to make Hispanics aware of the services that the city offers, officials said yesterday.”*

U.S. obesity rates alarmingly high - (Study found 66% of Hispanics were overweight and 33% to 50% were obese!)

“New research shows “alarming levels” of obesity in most ethnic groups in the United States, principal investigator Dr. Gregory L. Burke, of Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina told Reuters Health. The study also confirms the potentially deadly toll obesity exacts on the heart and blood vessels.

“The obesity epidemic has the potential to reduce further gains in U.S. life expectancy, largely through an effect on cardiovascular disease mortality (death),” Burke and colleagues warn in the latest issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

Among 6,814 middle-age or older adults participating in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, or “MESA” study, researchers found that more than two thirds of white, African American and Hispanic participants were overweight and one third to one half were obese.”*

Winston-Salem wants illegal immigrants off private payrolls - North Carolina

“The city of Winston-Salem wants private companies to do more to keep illegal immigrants off their payrolls, though the city itself hasn’t gone as far as the federal or state government to track the immigration status of its own hires.

The city is changing its contracts with private companies - from landscapers to companies asking for economic incentives. The changes highlight that employers must comply with federal laws that require companies to verify that new hires are in the country legally. The changes, which will apply to new contracts and do not require the approval of the Winston-Salem City Council, come at the request of Council Member Nelson Malloy. He said he wants to make sure that city contracts do not benefit illegal immigrants.”*

Class teaches Spanish to native speakers - Winston-Salem, North Carolina

“It was a typical lesson except for one thing - the students were all native Spanish speakers who had learned very little of the grammar of their language. A relatively new class, Spanish for Native Speakers, is intended to teach them how Spanish works.

School officials say that the class teaches native Spanish speakers respect for their own language, makes them truly bilingual and also makes it easier for them to learn English.

“The kids are enjoying it. It’s the one place in the day when they’re comfortable. They know what the teacher is saying,” said Leslie Baldwin, the school system’s program specialist for foreign languages.”*

BB&T receives Latino Diamante Award in recognition of educational series of audiotapes and CDs

Tags: , ,

“BB&T received the Latino Diamante Award for education at Diamante Inc.’s 12th annual awards ceremony held earlier this month in Raleigh. The award recognizes outstanding contributions to North Carolina’s Hispanic/Latino community through teaching, administration, research and participation in professional education associations.

BB&T received the award for its groundbreaking series of free “BiBi” audio tapes and CDs (named for one of the narrators and pronounced Bee-Bee). The 60- minute “BiBi” series covers topics such as emergency preparedness, basic banking information, tips on finding a job, the United States’ legal system, driving in the U.S., paying taxes in the U.S. and more.

“Celebrating Hispanic heritage and culture can come in many ways; for us it is by recognizing achievement and contributions on behalf of the community in our state,” said Lizette Cruz-Watko, Diamante Inc. founder. “This (the awards) is simply Diamante’s way of saying thank you to those making North Carolina a better place to live for thousands of Hispanics.”

About 350,000 of the “BiBi” tapes and CDs have been distributed through BB&T’s more than 1,500 financial centers as well as through Hispanic/Latino advocacy groups since 2002. The “BiBi” series consists of nine different topics and additional topics are being considered.

The concept for the educational series began when BB&T officials met with Latino leaders and advocacy groups to learn about the challenges new immigrants face, not only with banking but also with everyday issues.

“It’s an honor to receive this award,” said Jorge Moller, BB&T’s multicultural markets manager, who accepted the award for the financial services company. “Educating new Latino immigrants on the American way of life is a key issue for BB&T. The ‘BiBi’ series, which also is available in English, demonstrates BB&T’s commitment to our corporate mission of making the communities in which we work better places to be.”

The Spanish educational series has been particularly well received through the “BB&T@Work” program, which provides discounts and other benefits to employees of BB&T’s business clients. Employers have found the tapes help their multicultural employees adapt to American life and culture, Moller said.

The “BiBi” series is one aspect of a broad multicultural program focused on providing the “perfect client experience” to BB&T’s diverse and multicultural communities, Moller said. Approximately 10 percent of BB&T’s branches are multicultural banking centers that include bilingual staff members as well as Spanish signage and brochures.

“Our commitment to service excellence extends from our outstanding Spanish-speaking customer service to having the appropriate products and services that better meet the needs of our communities,” he said.

With $130.8 billion in assets and more than 1,500 financial centers in 11 states, Winston-Salem, N.C.-based BB&T Corporation is the nation’s 14th largest financial holding company. More information about the company is available at BBT.com.”*

“Male Latino immigrants working in low-wage, non-professional jobs report infrequent work-family conflict, found a U.S. study.

Lead author Joseph G. Grzywacz of Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C., said work-family conflicts are situations in which the demands and responsibilities of work and family roles are incompatible in some respect.

It can occur in both directions. For example, family can interfere with work if a worker is distracted by marital problems or a sick child and work can interfere with family when work schedules make it impossible to attend family functions or complete household chores. “

Toyota Launches Literacy Program for Hispanic and Other Immigrant Families in Wichita

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

“oyota today announced that three Wichita elementary schools will be among the newest sites for its successful Toyota Family Literacy Program TFLP. TFLP — the first nationwide program of its kind to focus on the needs of Hispanic and other immigrant families — is coordinated by the National Center for Family Literacy NCFL, the countrys leading advocate for family literacy.

Toyota has contributed $600,000 to fund the program at Park Elementary School, Colvin Elementary School and Stanley Elementary School. These there schools have an average of nearly 50 percent Hispanic student enrollment.

TFLP — which got its start in 2003 and is now functioning in 10 cities across the U.S. — aims to increase basic language and literacy skills among Hispanic and other immigrant families, and provide parents with the skills they need to help their children succeed in school. The program specifically serves children in kindergarten to third grade and their parents. TFLP is unique in that it incorporates NCFLs multicultural family literacy model, which combines key components including: ESL courses, early childhood education, parenting education, Parent and Child Together PACT activities, and computer-literacy instruction. Toyota has donated $26 million to the program since its inception.

In addition to the launch at these three schools, the funding will allow NCFL to provide comprehensive support for training, educational materials and assistance at each site. Wichita State University and Wichita Public Schools are working hand-in-hand with NCFL to implement the family literacy program.

Along with Wichita, four other cities are part of the latest expansion of the Toyota Family Literacy Program: Chula Vista, Calif.; Winston-Salem, N.C.; San Antonio, Texas; and Orlando, Fla. A total of 155 school districts submitted applications for the five spots, all vying for part of the overall $3 million grant from Toyota.

“The growing Hispanic population in Wichita has created a need for high-quality programs to support families in need,” said Donald L. Beggs, president, Wichita State University. “The Toyota Family Literacy Program encourages parental involvement in the public schools that can lead to better outcomes for young children,” he added. “Educating children in our elementary schools who speak English as a second language has been a major challenge for educators. Improving their outcomes through high-quality programs is a worthy goal.”

“The Toyota Family Literacy Program addresses two of the most critical factors in student success — strong literacy skills and meaningful parental involvement,” said Winston Brooks, superintendent, Wichita Public Schools. “Non-English speaking parents at Park, Colvin and Stanley elementary schools have the opportunity to increase their language skills, while at the same time becoming more involved in the education of their children both at school and at home. The commitment of this program to empower parents to help themselves and their children is tremendous.”

Early results from cities where TFLP has already implemented include:

Significant literacy gains by adults, the majority of which improved
their literacy scores by one or more levels
Ratings for children in the program that exceeded peers in areas
including academic performance, motivation to learn, attendance,
classroom behavior, involvement in classroom activities, and other
areas
70% of participating families holding a library card by the end of
the first year
Waiting lists at the majority of program sites due to high demand

“Partnering with Toyota, NCFL has nurtured a proven formula of research and delivery of family literacy services that not only works for the participants, it works for the betterment of the communities,” said Sharon Darling, president and founder of NCFL. “And, were proud to say, our path to success here in Wichita has been set by the impressive gains made by thousands of TFLP participants in family literacy programs throughout the nation.”

“As we expand the successful Toyota Family Literacy Program into communities across the country, we continue to hear the tremendous success stories from thousands of families in diverse communities,” said Patricia Pineda, group vice president, legal, philanthropy and administration at Toyota Motor North America. “Were thrilled to partner with NCFL to bring the program to Wichita and we look forward to making even more positive and lasting contributions to students and families.”"

“Aguirre, a senior at Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, is going to vote in the November general election. She’s 18, and she’s a U.S. citizen - born in Atlanta after her mother traveled to the United States as a young girl from Mexico.

Aguirre, who speaks Spanish as fluently as English, is part of a bicultural generation that within 10 years has the potential to become a powerful voting bloc in North Carolina, according to demographers. For the Nov. 7 general election, however, Aguirre will have little company at the polls as a Hispanic voter.

North Carolina has about 5.5 million registered voters. Less than 30,000, or 0.55 percent, are Hispanic, according to the State Board of Elections.”
