Hispanic Heritage Foundation Presents Inspira Award to Texas Rep. Hinojosa, ExxonMobil CEO Tillerson

"The Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) today honored U. S. Representative Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX) and ExxonMobil Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rex W. Tillerson, with the Inspira Award for their leadership in education for Latinos and for inspiring a new generation of Hispanic leaders in the United States.

According to Jose Antonio Tijerino, HHF president and CEO, the Inspira Award was created to honor Latino leaders who inspire youth in the public and private sector, and in the media. Last year’s Inspira Awardee was Actor Wilmer Valderrama. Rep. Hinojosa and Tillerson were honored on Capitol Hill during the 11th Annual Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards in Washington, D.C., which also recognized more than 20 outstanding students from the region. Washington, DC was the last of the 12 Regional Youth Awards ceremonies which have taken place and recognized more than 200 Hispanic high school seniors across America and provided more than $600,000 in educational grants.

“The Inspira Award recognizes those who have taken a leadership role in breaking barriers and creating opportunities for Hispanic youth,” said Tijerino. “We commend Rex Tillerson for his vision in encouraging and facilitating young Latinos to focus on science, technology, math and engineering through our Youth Awards and countless other efforts including the National Math and Science Initiative. We also applaud the lifetime of commitment of Rep. Hinojosa who is our champion from barrios to Capitol Hill on the issue of increasing educational opportunities for Latinos. They are truly an inspiration.”

Rep. Hinojosa has played an instrumental role in helping to improve educational and workforce-improvement programs for minorities and low-income families. In addition to the many education initiatives he has supported, Rep. Hinojosa founded a year-round program called HESTEC in 2002. Held at the University of Texas-Pan American, HESTEC emphasizes the importance of science literacy for Hispanics to educators, students and parents.

Rep. Hinojosa serves as chairman of the Education Task Force for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and has had tremendous success in vaulting Hispanic-Serving Institutions to a position of prominence. In 2007, Hinojosa helped pass the College Cost Reduction Act which will allow students to pursue higher educational goals by making college more affordable.

“I am extremely honored to be selected for this prestigious award,” said Rep. Hinojosa. “Education is the cornerstone of opportunity. It paves the way to improve technology, spreads new knowledge, advances innovation and ultimately shapes our future. Tillerson and ExxonMobil have a long history of support for programs that improve opportunities for minorities and women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. "A star of television's "That '70s Show" will be in western New York this month to pay tribute to comedians Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball.

Wilmer Valderrama will present "A Tribute to Desi Arnaz" on Saturday night as part of the Lucy-Desi Days Memorial Day Weekend festival. He'll do a question-and-answer session on Arnaz's work, and show some clips of his favorite scenes.

Valderrama, who played Fez on "That '70s Show" and hosts MTV's "Yo Momma!", said he's always been inspired by Arnaz as a performer and Hispanic American. Arnaz, who died in 1986, was Cuban-American. "

Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation Announces New Hispanic Ambassadors

"In an effort to improve the quality of life among Hispanics living with paralysis, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation's Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) announces their 2008 Hispanic Ambassadors. Through public appearances, public service announcements, and other means of communication, the Hispanic Ambassadors are committed to increasing awareness of the PRC's mission of promoting the health and well-being of people living with a spinal cord injury, mobility impairment or paralysis by providing comprehensive information, resources and referral services, and grants.

The PRC's new Hispanic Ambassadors are: television personalities Alfonso de Anda, Jencarlos Canela, Alejandro Chaban, Candela Ferro, Maritza Rodriguez and Hugo Vasquez; Mexican singer Rogelio Martinez; and Academy Award nominated actress Adriana Barrera. Actor Wilmer Valderrama, who participated in various PRC awareness efforts in 2007, will continue his support in 2008.

"I had a family member diagnosed with a disease that may cause her to be paralyzed, and it was difficult for me to understand what changes we would experience as a family," said newly appointed Ambassador Hugo Vasquez. "Having the Paralysis Resource Center provide the public with free information and resources to overcome our challenges can make all the difference in the world between having hope and feeling lost. I have hope."

In the United States, 37 percent of Hispanics know or have known of someone who lives with paralysis. Apart from degenerative diseases like ALS and multiple sclerosis, or birth conditions like spina bifida, people can become paralyzed as a result of injury or accidents that can change their lives in an instant. Acknowledging that Hispanics and other ethnic communities already experience additional challenges to accessing health care, the PRC is making a significant effort to provide resources and support to Hispanics living with paralysis and their family members.

"We are thrilled that our 2008 Hispanic Ambassadors have teamed with us to spread awareness about the PRC's efforts because finding useful information about paralysis, especially in language, can be frustrating," explained Joseph Canose, vice president for Quality of Life at the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. "We have bilingual information specialists at the PRC who answer our toll-free resource line and a Spanish language website to ensure that we can help paralyzed individuals live lives without limits."

"The Richardson for President campaign today announced that actor/activist Tony Plana, a star of ABC's hit show "Ugly Betty," will serve as the National Spokesperson for Mi Familia con Richardson, the campaign's grassroots Latino outreach program.
