Valderrama’s ad features a character replica of him as an M&M’S(R) chocolate candy surrounded by fans as he struts down the red carpet. It will appear in the July edition of People En Espanol, on stands through August 6. Hispanic talk show sensation Saralegui’s ad features her as a bright yellow lentil with matching pumps and a microphone in hand, and will debut October 6 in People En Espanol available through November 5. They join other well known personalities such as NASCAR driver Kyle Busch, Super Bowl commentators Howie Long and Jimmy Johnson, award season’s red carpet co-costs Lisa Rinna and Joey Fatone, and master griller Bobby Flay.

“We are excited to illustrate our commitment to the Hispanic community through our first ever Hispanic ‘Inner M’ campaign for M&M’S and as a sponsor of the ALMA Awards,” said Michele Kessler, vice president, marketing, Mars Snackfood US. “Wilmer Valderrama and Christina Saralegui are great brand ambassadors — they embrace life with passion and humor, and their ‘Inner M’ reflects those characteristics.”

Valderrama describes his “Inner M” as “rich in culture, flavor, and softness,” stating, “[I embrace it] by not ever forgetting who I am and what I am made of. And what I taste like on the inside … which I am sure is culturally delicious.”

You Too Can Live Like A Star
In conjunction with Valderrama’s ad launch, M&M’S(R) Brand is giving one lucky fan the chance to Live Like a Star at the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) ALMA Awards. Hispanic Heritage Foundation Presents Inspira Award to Texas Rep. Hinojosa, ExxonMobil CEO Tillerson

Tags: , , , ,

“The Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) today honored U. S. Representative Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX) and ExxonMobil Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Rex W. Tillerson, with the Inspira Award for their leadership in education for Latinos and for inspiring a new generation of Hispanic leaders in the United States.

According to Jose Antonio Tijerino, HHF president and CEO, the Inspira Award was created to honor Latino leaders who inspire youth in the public and private sector, and in the media. Last year’s Inspira Awardee was Actor Wilmer Valderrama. Rep. Hinojosa and Tillerson were honored on Capitol Hill during the 11th Annual Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards in Washington, D.C., which also recognized more than 20 outstanding students from the region. Washington, DC was the last of the 12 Regional Youth Awards ceremonies which have taken place and recognized more than 200 Hispanic high school seniors across America and provided more than $600,000 in educational grants.

“The Inspira Award recognizes those who have taken a leadership role in breaking barriers and creating opportunities for Hispanic youth,” said Tijerino. “We commend Rex Tillerson for his vision in encouraging and facilitating young Latinos to focus on science, technology, math and engineering through our Youth Awards and countless other efforts including the National Math and Science Initiative. We also applaud the lifetime of commitment of Rep. Hinojosa who is our champion from barrios to Capitol Hill on the issue of increasing educational opportunities for Latinos. They are truly an inspiration.”

Rep. Hinojosa has played an instrumental role in helping to improve educational and workforce-improvement programs for minorities and low-income families. In addition to the many education initiatives he has supported, Rep. Hinojosa founded a year-round program called HESTEC in 2002. Held at the University of Texas-Pan American, HESTEC emphasizes the importance of science literacy for Hispanics to educators, students and parents.

Rep. Hinojosa serves as chairman of the Education Task Force for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and has had tremendous success in vaulting Hispanic-Serving Institutions to a position of prominence. In 2007, Hinojosa helped pass the College Cost Reduction Act which will allow students to pursue higher educational goals by making college more affordable.

“I am extremely honored to be selected for this prestigious award,” said Rep. Hinojosa. “Education is the cornerstone of opportunity. It paves the way to improve technology, spreads new knowledge, advances innovation and ultimately shapes our future. It is vital that Hispanic-serving organizations, educational institutions and corporations help America stay competitive by advancing our educational system and capitalize upon the abundance of young and talented Hispanic minds.”

Tillerson and ExxonMobil have a long history of support for programs that improve opportunities for minorities and women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. These programs recognize the urgent need to encourage more Hispanic students and professionals to attain higher educational achievements and support initiatives that deliver high-quality educational programs, which prepare Hispanics for leadership in the workforce and in the classroom.

“To be recognized by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation is a great honor,” said Tillerson. “In today’s challenging fields such as technology and energy, our nation needs more brilliant minds than ever before, that’s why we support programs like the Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s Youth Awards’ Engineering and Mathematics category, which emphasize the importance of role models, including those who have succeeded in the math and science fields, while celebrating the unique Latino culture that brings added strength and dimension to our nation’s workforce.””*

Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation Announces New Hispanic Ambassadors

“In an effort to improve the quality of life among Hispanics living with paralysis, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation’s Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) announces their 2008 Hispanic Ambassadors. Through public appearances, public service announcements, and other means of communication, the Hispanic Ambassadors are committed to increasing awareness of the PRC’s mission of promoting the health and well-being of people living with a spinal cord injury, mobility impairment or paralysis by providing comprehensive information, resources and referral services, and grants.

The PRC’s new Hispanic Ambassadors are: television personalities Alfonso de Anda, Jencarlos Canela, Alejandro Chaban, Candela Ferro, Maritza Rodriguez and Hugo Vasquez; Mexican singer Rogelio Martinez; and Academy Award nominated actress Adriana Barrera. Actor Wilmer Valderrama, who participated in various PRC awareness efforts in 2007, will continue his support in 2008.

“I had a family member diagnosed with a disease that may cause her to be paralyzed, and it was difficult for me to understand what changes we would experience as a family,” said newly appointed Ambassador Hugo Vasquez. “Having the Paralysis Resource Center provide the public with free information and resources to overcome our challenges can make all the difference in the world between having hope and feeling lost. I have hope.”

In the United States, 37 percent of Hispanics know or have known of someone who lives with paralysis. Apart from degenerative diseases like ALS and multiple sclerosis, or birth conditions like spina bifida, people can become paralyzed as a result of injury or accidents that can change their lives in an instant. Acknowledging that Hispanics and other ethnic communities already experience additional challenges to accessing health care, the PRC is making a significant effort to provide resources and support to Hispanics living with paralysis and their family members.

“We are thrilled that our 2008 Hispanic Ambassadors have teamed with us to spread awareness about the PRC’s efforts because finding useful information about paralysis, especially in language, can be frustrating,” explained Joseph Canose, vice president for Quality of Life at the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. “We have bilingual information specialists at the PRC who answer our toll-free resource line and a Spanish language website to ensure that we can help paralyzed individuals live lives without limits.”

To interview a Hispanic Ambassador contact David Roman at LAGRANT COMMUNICATIONS at (323) 469-8680 or via e-mail at davidroman@lagrant.com.

The Paralysis Resource Center (PRC), a program of the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation (CDRF) and formed through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has established a Multicultural Outreach Program to promote informed health care decisions and active and independent living among those in the Hispanic, African-American, Asian-American/Pacific Islander and Native American communities living with paralysis. For more information about the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation or to obtain information about the PRC or how to improve the quality of life for someone living with paralysis please visit our website at www.paralysis.org or www.paralisis.org, or call (800) 539-7309. “*

“Suzuki Auto, the proud maker of exciting vehicles that reflect consumers’ active lifestyles, today announced its official sponsorship of the 8th New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF), which runs from July 24 through 29, 2007 in New York City.

As the exclusive official vehicle sponsor for the festival, Suzuki Auto will present a special screening and after-party for the film “El Muerto,” produced by and starring Wilmer Valderrama. The auto company also will play a starring role during the NYILFF Family Day on Saturday, July 28, at Maribel Sisters School in Washington Heights. The free event will include family-friendly entertainment, flamenco dancing, outdoor games, arts and crafts workshops, and a unique opportunity to enjoy the ultimate mobile movie experience provided by Suzuki’s own Flix concept vehicle – an ultramodern XL7 SUV equipped with a digital projection system and a roof that opens to reveal a 40-inch movie screen that, for this occasion, will debut shorts produced by kids from the community-based media organization Manhattan Neighborhood Network.

The partnership marks Suzuki’s first foray into the Latino creative and film industry and further connects the company and its products with a wide-ranging consumer demographic of those who choose to live life instead of watch it go by.

“Suzuki is delighted to partner with the New York International Latino Film Festival, the largest urban Latino film event in the country,” said Gene Brown, vice president of marketing, Suzuki Auto. “Just as Suzuki is dedicated to providing fun and exciting products that reflect consumers’ Way of Life, the festival shares a similar commitment to providing exhilarating and culturally relevant entertainment for film fans.”

As part of its sponsorship, Suzuki Auto is also launching the nationwide animation contest, “¡Anímate! – La vida Suzuki,” featuring the Suzuki XL7, which will be announced at this year’s festival. Call for entries for the online contest will begin in September, coinciding with Hispanic Heritage Month, and will conclude with the winning animation featured at the 2008 NYILFF. Participants can visit www.suzukiauto.com/nyilff/ for more information.

“The New York International Latino Film Festival is thrilled to have Suzuki as its exclusive automotive partner for 2007 and 2008,” said NYILFF executive director, Elizabeth Gardner. “We are inspired by their commitment to supporting independent Latino filmmaking talent, especially in the animation category, which represents an exciting programming expansion for the NYILFF.”

NYILFF has emerged as one of leading film festivals focusing on the urban Latino experience, and showcasing the work of the hottest emerging filmmakers from the U.S. and Latin America. This year’s festival will include screenings throughout the day and evening, industry panel discussions, music showcases, special cultural events and the free-to-the-community NYILFF Family Day and Cinema under the Stars, all tailored to reach the diverse and generational Latino audience.
