“SABEResPODER and Wells Fargo have come together to empower Latinos by introducing the key basics of banking that are important to this community,” said Amir Hemmat, president and CEO of SABEResPODER. “We have seen time and time again that education is the key to helping Latinos succeed, and we’re happy to work with Wells Fargo to make this information available.”

Elements of the campaign include financial education guides, video and events, opt-in mobile text message tips and community events across the U.S. Additionally, as a way to encourage the underbanked to begin benefiting from the banking system, Wells Fargo is including an ExpressSend remittance rebate offer in the financial education guide that will be good throughout the campaign.

“At Wells Fargo, we are committed to working together with customers and communities to earn their trust and help them succeed financially,’’ said Daniel Ayala, EVP and head of Wells Fargo Global Remittance Service. “Whether needing to open a basic deposit account or looking for an economical and secure way to remit money to family and friends through our ExpressSend Service, Wells Fargo is here to help. We know; however, financial education is the first step and we are grateful that SABEResPODER is helping us reach Latinos who might not otherwise seek the financial education they need to help them reach their financial goals.”

“Financial literacy has proven to be the most successful development policy tool that increases financial access and helps build assets among migrants and families,” said Dr. Manuel Orozco, Remittances and Development Program, Inter-American Dialogue. “Furthermore, key to financial literacy success lies in choosing the right partner and its methodology. In this sense, the collaboration with SABEResPODER is a positive step toward strengthening an already financially vulnerable community, such as that of Mexican migrants.”

The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) Foundation will accept a $450,000 grant today from the Wells Fargo Foundation at the 31st Annual Convention & Business Expo, held in Dallas, Texas, to support education initiatives of the national Hispanic chamber. A press conference will be held at 10:15 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. at the Hilton Anatole, Trinity Ballroom and Expo Hall.

"The USHCC Foundation is continually searching for ways to encourage participation from Hispanic communities in our nation's economic development," said Javier Palomarez, USHCC President and CEO. "This gift from the Wells Fargo Foundation is a true testament to the continued support that the USHCC is receiving from corporations across the country."

The grant will build on activities started in 2007 by the USHCC Foundation, which supports the goal of helping Hispanic business owners succeed financially. Some of the grant money has been used for educational opportunities hosted through the national USHCC Foundation Chamber Training Institute. As part of this program, all courses are taught by Notre Dame professors and leaders in television media.

A portion of the Wells Fargo Foundation grant will also be used to award a $25,000 scholarship to a student pursuing a Masters in Non-Profit Administration (MNA) at the University of Notre Dame. This year's recipient, Jorge Jaramillo, a member of USHCC, will apply the training received through the Masters program to improve the administration of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of San Mateo County, California, which he leads as President/CEO.

"Wells Fargo has benefited extensively from our partnership with the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce," said Tim Rios, Senior Vice President of Corporate Community Development and national spokesperson for Wells Fargo's Latino Business Services program. "The USHCC's work with Hispanic business owners mirrors Wells Fargo's commitment to the Hispanic business community and this grant is our way of supporting their work for the good of our mutual goal."

This year's USHCC National Convention & Business Expo, which opened Wednesday, September 22nd and concluding Saturday, September 25th, has broken previous attendance records and is considered the largest gathering of Hispanic business leaders in the nation. The convention will bring together thousands of Hispanic entrepreneurs, corporate executives, procurement and supplier-diversity professionals from the private and public sectors, as well as Latina leaders and Hispanic Chamber of Commerce leaders from throughout the nation.
