A Mature Salsa From Victor Manuelle, More Tender Than Tough

“If Victor Manuelle wanted to get half the crowd at Central Park SummerStage whooping on Sunday afternoon, he need only have performed the tiniest of gyrations with his hips. If he wanted both halves to make a ruckus, he need only have waved a Puerto Rican flag.

For weeks before, the show had been plugged on the New York Latin radio station La Kalle 105.9 — “Completamente gratis!” the commercials screamed. And so the show was packed, but not so tightly that couples who were inclined to dance, and there were many, didn’t have room.”*

ASCAP to Honor Victor Manuelle and Black Guayaba at 16th Annual Latin Music Awards on May 16 in Miami

“The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) will honor Victor Manuelle and Black Guayaba at its 16th Annual Latin Music Awards on May 16, 2008 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Miami Beach. The black tie gala will also honor the songwriters and publishers of ASCAP’s most performed songs in Latin Music of 2007.

Victor Manuelle will be honored with the ASCAP Golden Note Award, which is presented to songwriters, composers, and artists who have achieved extraordinary career milestones, and Black Guayaba will receive the ASCAP Vanguard Award in recognition of their impact, as new and developing musical artists, on shaping the future of their musical genre and the future of music.

Victor Manuelle has amassed significant achievements as a singer and songwriter and continues to be a familiar voice to Latin Music fans ever since his first album was released in 1993. Since then, he has produced chart-toping albums with substantial radio hits every single year. In March 2004, his album “Travesía,” produced by Emilio Esfefan, went to #1 on the Latin Billboard charts. In 2005, he released two live albums: “Victor Manuelle En Vivo Desde El Carnegie Hall,” recorded at Carnegie Hall, and “Dos Soneros…Una Historia” (Two Soneros…One Story), from his historical collaboration with Gilberto Santarosa, recorded live at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Puerto Rico. In 2007, he released his DVD “En Vivo Desde El Madison Square Garden,” and under his own record label, Kiyavi, his first Christmas album “Una Navidad a Mi Estilo” (Christmas My Style), which became an instant classic of new compositions of traditional Puerto Rican music. Victor Manuelle has thirteen musical productions to his credit, has achieved several #1 radio hits of his own authorship and has sold over two million albums.

Victor Manuelle joins an elite list of ASCAP members who have been honored with the ASCAP Golden Note Award, including Garth Brooks, Jose Feliciano, Quincy Jones, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Tom Petty, Joan Sebastian and Stevie Wonder, among others.

The members of Grammy Award-winning rock band Black Guayaba are the first Latin music artists to be recognized with the ASCAP Vanguard Award. Other notable recipients include The All-American Rejects, The Beastie Boys, Beck and Bjork, among others.

In a short amount of time, Black Guayaba — formed by Gustavo González (vocalist), Javier Morales (guitar), Carlos Ortíz (bass), Carlos Colón (keyboards) and Gabriel Calero (drums) — has earned a solid fan base and has been recognized for their unique style and genre-affecting sound. They originally began playing at local pubs and private events before preparing original material for their first album. They released “Lo Demás es Plástico” in 2005, which was produced by Bob St. John, who had previously worked with Ricky Martin, Duran Duran and Collective Soul, among others. The album spawned several hit singles, such as “Lejos,” “Atrapado,” and “Despacio.” It was that success which gave them the opportunity of being the opening act for bands Enanitos Verdes and Journey during their concerts in Puerto Rico. They had their first concert at the Luis A. Ferré Performing Arts Center in March 2006, the same year they were nominated for a Latin Grammy and a Grammy. In 2007, the band released their second album titled, “No Hay Espacio,” featuring the single “Sin Tu Amor.” In February 2008 they won their first Grammy in the category of Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.

ASCAP’s Latin Music Awards is one of the most attended and celebrated events in the Latin entertainment community. Victor Manuelle and Black Guayaba join a select list of Latin music icons that have been singled out for special recognition at ASCAP’s Latin Music Awards, including Antonio Aguilar, Ricardo Arjona, Rubén Blades, Celia Cruz, Franco De Vita, José Feliciano, Ednita Nazario, Tito Puente, Arturo Sandoval, Joan Sebastian, Gilberto Santa Rosa and Olga Tañón.

During the May 16th event, ASCAP will also recognize the Songwriter of the Year, Publisher of the Year and Song of the Year, and Awards will be presented in the following categories: Pop, Tropical, Regional Mexican, Rock, Urban and Television.

Others on the list include singers Luis Miguel, Juan Luis Guerra, and Victor Manuelle, among others.

Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez lands on the “Stars of the Year” list for her accomplishments in 2007 including her first Spanish language CD, Como ama una mujer, and her new English album called Brave, producing and starring in the film El Cantante, and her first tour with husband Marc Anthony. Mexican actress Kate Del Castillo is recognized for her leading roles in the 2007 films Trade and The Black Pimpernel, and next year, she’ll star in four more movies—Julia, Bad Guys, Under the Same Moon and Por vida (For Life.)

PEOPLE en Español crowns Mexican actress Angelica Vale as “comedian of the year” for her role in Univision’s La fea mas bella and Puerto Rican actress Adamari Lopez is named the “year’s comeback” for her successful return to telenovelas as a popular villain. The magazine also recognizes singers Juan Luis Guerra and Victor Manuelle for their big year in music, while TV personality Jackie Guerrido and reggaeton artist Don Omar are named the “couple of the year.” “People may think I have it all,” Don Omar tells the magazine. “But I was really looking for romantic stability… and I was searching for that person who would complement me,” he adds. Guerrido shares how they handle a long distance relationship, since she is based in Miami and Don Omar resides in New York. “Since I’m off Saturdays and Sundays, I travel to where he is… New York or anywhere else,” she says. “It’s not about the hours, but the quality time we spend together.”

Mexican singer Luis Miguel takes home the “dad of the year” title after the birth of his son with soap-opera actress Aracely Arambula, and for mending the estranged relationship with his daughter. (Page 87)

Other Stories in this Issue:

Everything was cleared up, we paid the bail and I was out by 9 PM.” During the interview, Montero also clears rumors of his alleged drug addiction, and explains how his newborn son changed his life. Roselyn Sanchez in LATINA Magazine

Tags: , ,

Actress Roselyn Sanchez opened in the September issue of Latina magazine about leaving Puerto Rico, the hardships she faced in New York; lessons learned from divorce; her musical ambitions; and the “Desperate Housewives” role she lost out on.

On leaving Puerto Rico for the big lights of New York City
“I was the youngest of four and the only girl, so I was very sheltered. I came with the little money I saved in Puerto Rico – from doing commercials, videos and a variety show – but I didn’t know what credit was. I didn’t know how to write a check. I was taking singing and acting lessons, working as a hostess at a restaurant and changing clothes at a McDonald’s before auditions. It wasn’t until I got my first steady gig in As The World Turns that I told my parents the truth about my experience – had they known, the would’ve sent for me.”

On what she learned from her divorce from [British boxer/model/actor Gary Stretch]:
“To never let any man talk to me in a disrespectful way because of his own insecurities. I was young, naí¯ve and in a new country. After my divorce, Victor Manuelle showed me what a functional relationship was. Now I have the nicest man, an americanito, [actor] Eric Winter, by my side. We’ve been together more than a year. If you find a good man, you’ll be his queen.”

On her musical ambitions after the release of her album, Borinqueña in 2003:
“Although I’m grateful for the opportunities – I was nominated for a Latin Grammy and even had concerts – I’m still not happy about the way my singing career unfolded. Maybe I should’ve done pop, but I wanted to be the Latin Sade.”

On the role she lost out on because of her accent:
“Gabrielle in Desperate Housewives. But I’m happy for Eva [Longoria] because she’s my friend, and she deserved it.”

On the prayer Marc Anthony taught her:
“Dios conmigo y yo con í‰l [God with me and I with Him]. I say it all the time. I think Marc taught me that when we met on the set of his video for “Nadie Como Ella” [she played his girlfriend], one of my first gigs after I came to New York. In this industry, people will wish you harm, so you have to protect yourself.”

“Univision Communications Inc. NYSE:UVN – Spectacle and surprises abounded Thursday night on the 19th edition of “Premio Lo Nuestro a La MÚsica Latina,” America’s most popular and most-watched Latin music awards show, broadcast live on the Univision Television Network.

The biggest winners of the night with three awards each were Norteño super group Intocable and popular Mexican rock group Maná, followed by international pop sensation RBD, Puerto Rican singer Olga Tañón, Dominican bachata artists Monchy y Alexandra and Aventura, Regional Mexican artist Joan Sebastián, and Puerto Rican Reggaeton artists Wisin y Yandel who each took home two awards. Intocable received three awards in the Regional Mexican category including Best Group or Duo, Song of the Year for “Alguien te Va a Hacer Llorar” and Best Norteño Artist. Maná swept the Rock category winning top honors in all three awards for Album of the Year Amar es Combatir, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year Labios Compartidos. Receiving one of the biggest ovations of approval from the audience was popular salsa star Marc Anthony as he was awarded Male Artist of the Year in the Tropical Music category.

The star studded show kicked off with a dazzling, fireworks-filled musical number featuring Mexican pop/rock diva Gloria Trevi singing “Todos Me Miran” that ended with her ascending skyward in an explosive, flaming finale. Later, in another visually stunning number, Colombian singer Fonseca sang his hit “Te Mando Flores” (I Send You Flowers) to a virtual field of fans waving over 10,000 real flowers specially flown in from his native country.

In what would be the first of many surprises of the night, Ranchero superstar Pepe Aguilar sang the classic hit “Todo Se Derrumbo” made famous by Mexican pop legend Emmanuel, who appeared in person onstage in a previously unannounced performance to thunderous applause from a clearly surprised audience.

One of the night’s more emotional moments was a video tribute to the career of Dominican singer/songwriter Juan Luis Guerra. Guerra then performed a medley of his greatest hits, after which he was presented the coveted “Premio a la Excelencia” award by two members of the Mexican super group Maná.

Another show highlight was Domincan bachata group Aventura performing for the first time ever with Mexican R&B singer Frankie J. Later, in the final surprise of the evening, the crowd was treated to a dramatic entrance by Reggaetón superstar Don Omar joining popular salsa artist Victor Manuelle in a duet combining both their respective musical genres.

The evening ended with the most hotly contested category of all, the highly anticipated Video of the Year, presented by motion picture star and best-selling recording artist Jennifer Lopez. This award, which crosses all musical genres and whose nominees include some of the biggest names in all of Latin music, ultimately went to Don Omar for “Angelito.”

“The Multicultural Music Group, Inc. (MMG) will commemorate ten years of teaching music to inner city youth with a benefit concert that will unite two generations with one goal: promoting free music education. Eight-time Grammy winner Eddie Palmieri will join forces with one of the Latin music world’s young stars, singer Victor Manuelle, at 8 PM on December 1, 2006 at Manhattan Center’s Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, on Eighth Avenue and 34th Street.

“Two Generations” will benefit MMG’s educational programs headed by Executive Director, Dr. Luis Mojica. For 10 years, MMG has struggled to provide music education in many of NYC’s public schools, preparing students for a musical education and for admission to prestigious music programs. MMG’s students have been able to excel in their musical skills and in their academic performance, as well. “Our students have excelled in music and in their other studies and can be expected to continue to succeed in both areas,” said Mojica. MMG has served over 5000 students, tutored 400 for admission to specialized music schools and prepared hundreds for professional music careers.

In addition to its instructional component, the MMG Orchestra, led by Academy Award Nominee, Ray Santos, has also presented live concerts as methods of raising funds and awareness. Past concerts include:

Ӣ the Multicultural Music Encounters, a five part concert highlighting Jewish, African American, Latin, Chinese and Middle Eastern musical traditions,
Ӣ a Tribute to Charlie Palmieri in 2004 at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, where Latin music and Jazz stars integrated their classic sounds with the 30-piece symphonic MMG Orchestra and
”¢ “Listen Here! 50 Years of Eddie Palmieri!” in conjunction with Aaron Davis Hall, celebrating Eddie Palmieri’s 50 years of musical excellence. Mr. Palmieri has been the Honorary Chairman of MMG since 2004.

Since being formed in 1996, MMG has received many commendations for its efforts towards quality music education and for its work toward racial harmony and cultural diversity. In 1999, MMG was recognized by President Clinton’s “Initiative on Race” as an organization with “Promising Practices for Racial Reconciliation.” In 2002, the Civil Rights Coalition for the 21st Century granted MMG “Promising Program” recognition for its efforts in promoting multicultural understanding and world peace.

The “Two Generations” 10th Anniversary concert will also feature the MMG Orchestra – a symphonic music ensemble of over 30 professional musicians under the direction of Ray Santos featuring great performers from the Latin music category such Mario Rivera, Bobby Porcelli, Papo Pepin, Johnny Rivero, Lewis Kahn, Kevin Brian and many more.
