135 Hispanic Students Across the Country to Receive Nearly $500,000 in Verizon Scholarships

Verizon has awarded $495,500 in scholarships to 135 Hispanic students for the 2009-2010 school year.

The scholarship program is one of many programs Verizon and its philanthropic arm, the Verizon Foundation, have in place to support the Hispanic community.

"Verizon has a long history of investing in our communities and in the development of future leaders," said Magda Yrizarry, Verizon chief diversity officer and vice president - workplace culture, diversity and compliance. "We are proud to partner with organizations that have supported the Hispanic community by helping students gain the knowledge needed to succeed in the classroom and in the workplace, and to have a positive impact in their communities." Among the organizations that have received grants from Verizon to fund scholarships are: the Hispanic College Fund; Hispanic Heritage Fund; Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology Program at the University of Texas-Pan American; Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers National Scholarship; and the University of Puerto Rico.

For Fifth Straight Year, Hispanic Business Magazine Names Verizon One of the Top Companies for Diversity

Hispanic Business magazine has named Verizon to the publication's 2009 DIVERSITY ELITE 60 list. It is the fifth consecutive year that Verizon has been named to the annual list.

The September issue of Hispanic Business magazine will feature the list, which is comprised of companies committed to workforce diversity initiatives, marketing strategies and supplier diversity initiatives that benefit the Hispanic community.

The ranking is determined by more than 32 variables that measure a company's commitment to diversity and the Hispanic community, including a company's board membership, senior leadership, recruitment and retention, marketing, and business conducted with Hispanic-owned businesses. Verizon is ranked 11th on this year's list.

Su Casa Receives Grant From Verizon Wireless Communications Store

"Su Casa and the new Verizon Wireless Communications Store in Baldwin Park, Calif., teamed up to collect more than 180 no-longer-used phones and accessories. The collection drive earned the non-profit a $2,000 HopeLine grant for domestic violence prevention services. Verizon Wireless presented Su Casa with the HopeLine grant at the Communications Store located at 14510 Baldwin Park Towne Center, Baldwin Park, Calif. 91706.

"With this grant support from Verizon Wireless we will be able to continue to provide programs and services for domestic violence prevention and education," said Vicki Doolittle, Executive Director of Su Casa. "Like the HopeLine program, we strive to provide services and tools to empower individuals to live free from abuse."

Verizon Wireless' HopeLine program collects no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories in any condition from any wireless service provider. Phones donated to HopeLine that can be refurbished are sold for reuse, and those that are not salvageable are recycled in an environmentally sound way under a zero-landfill policy. Proceeds generated from the phones collected by HopeLine are put toward wireless phones and service for survivors of domestic violence as well as financial grants to non-profit domestic violence advocacy agencies. Verizon Launches Spanish-Language Web Site

"Verizon has launched a new Web site in Spanish to make it easier than ever for Spanish-speaking consumers to get information -- in their native language -- about all of the company's products and services, place orders, and register to manage their account online.

Among the features of the new site is information about Verizon's popular FiOS TV, FiOS Internet and High Speed Internet (DSL) services; DIRECTV service; bundles; and wireless phones and related offerings.

The site can be found at http://www.verizon.com/espanol or by clicking on "Espanol" located on the top right-hand side of Verizon's main Web site, http://www.verizon.com/. In addition, the six tabs on the top of the main site's home page -- "Internet," "TV," "Phone," "Bundles," "Support" and "My Verizon" -- all have "Espanol" links to the corresponding sections of the Spanish site.

"We've always had some content in Spanish because we know that some of our customers prefer to learn about our products and services in their native language," said Mark Studness director of e-commerce for Verizon. "Our newly launched Spanish Web site greatly expands our Spanish content and 7 x 24 self-service capabilities to meet the needs of our Spanish-speaking customers."

Hispanics constitute the fastest-growing minority group in the U.S., according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and constitute an important market segment for Verizon.

For more than a decade, Verizon has provided in-language customer service support to customers in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean and Vietnamese. Today, more than 1,000 employees staff 13 Verizon consumer multicultural sales and solution centers in various parts of the country, communicating with customers in their native languages. These employees help callers place orders for Verizon products and services, and assist with billing and answer questions.

Verizon Wireless Funds Scholarships to 20 Southern California Hispanic Students

"Local Hispanic students were honored recently for their academic excellence at a luncheon hosted by Verizon Wireless and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF). Each scholar was awarded $2,500 through the company's support of HSF. Verizon Wireless has pledged additional support for the scholarship cycle that is currently open.

Each of the students has a personal story of the pursuit of individual excellence. For example, Javier Mendez from San Diego, freshman at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, is majoring in computer engineering and furthering a personal and family dream. The son of migrant farm workers who endured hardships and were unable to finish their primary education, Javier said, "I knew I did not want to throw away what my parents had endured. Instead I wanted to prove to them that, by graduating from college, every challenge they faced and valiantly fought for me was worth it."

"We're grateful to Verizon Wireless for their commitment to education and their continued support of our Hispanic youth," said Gary Jimenez, HSF's Vice President for the Southern California Region. "We are very proud of students like Javier who can personally attest to how these awards contribute to their success."

Verizon Wireless has contributed nearly $600,000 to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund since 2003. Most recently, during Hispanic Heritage Month, the company donated a portion of its sales to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, which will be awarded to students in 2009.

Scholarship applications for the 2009-2010 academic year are currently available for online submission. The deadline to submit an application is February 18, 2009 by 11:59 pm, EST. Interested students can go to http://www.hsf.net to complete the electronic application form.

It is anticipated that the commercial will air during peak hours, showing images of the musical video song 'Tradicional a lo Bravo' (Traditional the Wild Way). In this clip, we can hear Tego's voice describing how challenging and important it is for him to have achieved this recognition. The commercial is part of a Verizon campaign that was successfully launched last year. In 30 seconds it honors those artists who have been nominated for this important prize. Good editing, original audio by Tego Calderon, images of the musical video and the song's melody all make up parts of the commercial. Television viewers will be able to enjoy the commercial two weeks prior to the awards ceremony as well as the night of the gala, which will be held November 13 at the Toyota Center in Houston, TX, via the Univsion network.

"Scholarship Funds Are Part of the More Than $ 31.7 Million Verizon Has Contributed Since 2006 to Support Nonprofit Organizations That Serve the Hispanic Community
Verizon has announced that it has awarded more than $680,000 in scholarships to 146 Hispanic students for the 2008-2009 school year.
The scholarship program is one of many programs that Verizon and its philanthropic arm, the Verizon Foundation, have in place to support the Hispanic community. The scholarships announcement was made in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, which began Monday (Sept. 15).
"Verizon has a long history of investing in the Latino community, including in the development of tomorrow's leaders," said Magda Yrizarry, Verizon chief diversity officer and vice president - workplace culture, diversity and compliance. "Across our richly diverse marketplace, from California to Texas to New York, Verizon remains committed to investing financial and human resources in partnerships and programs that directly benefit the Latino community."
Among the organizations that have received grants from Verizon to fund scholarships are:

-- Hispanic Scholarship Fund - $200,000 for 33 scholarships.
-- Hispanic Business College Fund - $150,000 for 35 scholarships.
-- Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology Program at the University
of Texas-Pan American - $25,000 for 5 scholarships.
-- Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers National Scholarship -

In all, the Verizon Foundation has awarded more than $31.7 million in grants since 2006 to nonprofit organizations that benefit and serve the Hispanic Community. Some recent initiatives include:

-- The creation of a special Hispanic Heritage Month resources section on
Thinkfinity.org, which provides free educational resources, lesson plans
and activities for teachers, parents and students. Thinkfinity.org is
the Verizon Foundation's comprehensive program and online portal to
55,000 standards-based, grade-specific, K-12 lesson plans and other
educational resources provided in partnership with many of the
nation's leading educational and literacy organizations.
-- Verizon is a major sponsor of the National Council of La Raza's
Alma Awards, an annual televised awards program that celebrates the
accomplishments of Latinos in the field of entertainment.
-- A $1 million Verizon Foundation grant to expand the League of Latin
American Citizens' (LULAC) Young Readers program, which is aimed at
improving literacy and academic achievement among Hispanic children in
grades 1-3.

The Verizon Foundation supports the advancement of literacy and K-12 education through its signature program, Thinkfinity.org, and fosters awareness and prevention of domestic violence. In 2007, the foundation awarded more than $67.4 million in grants to nonprofit agencies in the United States and abroad. The foundation also matched the charitable donations of Verizon employees and retirees, resulting in $25.1 million in combined contributions. One startling change has been the TV-watching habits of Hispanic viewers. In 1995, most Hispanic viewers in New York primarily watched English-language television (62 percent) over Spanish-language stations (38 percent), according to Nielsen Media Research. Last year, viewers favored the Spanish stations 71 to 29 percent. Similar trends are happening elsewhere.

For more than four years, Verizon has been installing its fiber optic, or Fios, network throughout the region and in a dozen other states. The company is attempting to gain a competitive edge against Cox Communications and other cable, Internet and phone-service providers. A Virginian-Pilot investigation over the past six months has found that many workers on the Verizon project are in the country illegally, performing back-breaking work that most Americans simply won’t do.

In an effort to gain a stronger presence in the Hispanic food market, a group led by Grocers Supply Co. Inc. has inked a deal to acquire 37 grocery stores from Minyard Food Stores Inc.

In the Chicago area, fewer than 5% of Hispanic men are in management, business or finance, compared with 16% of non-Hispanic men, according to another recent study, which found a similar gap for Hispanic women.

One of the U.S. Hispanic market’s hottest creative shops, La Comunidad, will name Antoinette Zel, a well-known former top Telemundo executive, president today. Ms. Zel has never worked at an ad agency.
