Verizon is adding Spanish-language movie channel Cine Nostalgia to its FiOS TV lineup, expanding FiOS TV's extensive Spanish-language offering, which includes more than 175 of the most popular channels available. The addition of Cine Nostalgia helps to meet the needs of the growing Mexican population in the United States. Cine Nostalgia is part of FiOS TV's La Conexion package and can be found on channel 1687. The channel will be available in all FiOS TV markets by Nov. 17 and sister channel Cine Estelar beginning 2012.

"As we see more and more need for Spanish-language programming, it is important for us to bolster our FiOS TV offering with quality channels like Cine Nostalgia that appeal to a diverse market base," said Terry Denson, vice president of content strategy and acquisition for Verizon. "Our Spanish-language channel lineup is becoming more differentiated and robust, meeting the needs of Hispanic consumers across the country."

Cine Nostalgia is a 24-hour-a-day black-and-white movie channel with the best movies made in Mexico, and a strong library from the 30s to the 60s which represents the "Golden Era" of Mexican film making.

"This is a wonderful moment for Cine Nostalgia and for the Spanish-language movie viewers throughout the country. Cine Nostalgia and Cine Estelar offer more than 3,000 exclusive titles, the largest library of Mexican movies in the world, not available in any other TV network. Our library keeps growing with high-quality uncut films as they were originally created," said Carlos Vasallo, President and CEO of Cine Nostalgia, Cine Estelar and other entertainment venues. "Verizon is an attractive platform for our channels, with a robust brand and FiOS TV is an increasingly popular choice for Hispanic consumers looking for value, technology and the benefits of the triple bundle." The fastest-growing Hispanic population, already familiar with Vasallo's comprehensive Mexican film library, distributed to Latin America through other networks, now has direct access in the U.S. thanks to partnerships with multichannel operators Verizon and DIRECTV and distribution continues growing.

About Carlos Vasallo - Carlos Vasallo owns and operates the biggest Mexican movie library in the world through its channels Cine Nostalgia and Cine Estelar headquartered in Miami, FL and Mexico City.
"Semillitas," a 24 hour animation channel targeting Hispanic toddlers and preschoolers, is now available on Verizon's FiOS TV service as part of its "La Conexion" package, which includes more than 155 channels with up to 18 in high definition.

"Semillitas," a channel produced by SOMOSTV (a Miami based company), is designed to preserve the Hispanic roots and language, one of the strongest needs of Latino parents. The channel focuses on children 0-5 years of age, an important age for the future conservation of the child's cultural background, of which language and other elements are key. According to recent Census results, Hispanics have been the segment most responsible for the growth of the American population, with children 0-5 years of age representing close to 27% of the total age bracket and reaching above 50% in many important markets such as California, Texas, New Mexico and a high number of metropolitan areas. According to proprietary research from the channel's producers Hispanic moms, regardless of their degree of acculturation, speak Spanish to their kids at these ages and consider TV watching a very important contributor to the transmission of cultural identity.

Jose Antonio Espinal, COO of SOMOSTV, expressed his satisfaction: "With this launch of 'Semillitas' with Verizon, we partner with a powerful player in the Hispanic Market and together we will be able to support Latino parents with a product carefully designed to address their children's needs with top quality animation and a violence free environment. We are celebrating this partnership and look forward to working together to better serve the most important segment of the American multicultural landscape."

Terry Denson, vice president of content strategy and acquisition for Verizon, said, "We are thrilled to add a new channel like 'Semillitas' to FiOS TV's Spanish-language offering. 'Semillitas' joins one of the industry's premier Spanish-language packages, La Conexion, which gives our FiOS TV customers access to more than 155 channels in both Spanish and English."

"Semillitas" is produced completely in neutral Spanish and packaged in a culturally relevant environment. The producers of the channel have paid attention to the continuity of traditions, games and other Hispanic elements, producing in house many interstitials such as songs and other interactive content to integrate parents and children to the TV watching experience. The channel also has a powerful online presence in its website http://www.semillitas.tv.

The Hispanic College Fund (HCF) today announced a $180,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to support Latino youth for college and career success. The majority of the grant ($155,000) will go directly toward funding scholarships for high-achieving college students. The remaining $25,000 will go toward HCF's 2011 one US Gala, to be held on Oct. 19 in Washington, D.C. All proceeds of the event will support HCF's pipeline of programs.

"Lack of financial resources is a major barrier in the Latino community. With its generous support, Verizon is helping the Hispanic College Fund serve economically disadvantaged yet deserving students who have the power to transcend the boundaries of their environment through accessing higher education," said Dr. Carlos E. Santiago, chief executive officer of the Hispanic College Fund. "The outstanding contributions Verizon has invested since 2002 are symbolic of the collaboration we seek with our 2011 one US Gala theme: 'coming together to strengthen America's future through Latino student success.'"

Rose Stuckey Kirk, president of the Verizon Foundation, said, "Education can help transform lives. We're proud to do our part to help students obtain their dream of achieving a college degree so they can have a brighter future."

A recipient of a scholarship supported by the Verizon Foundation is Angel Cabrera, a senior at New Mexico State University. For the first time, Cabrera has been able to fully benefit from the college experience. In previous years the financial burden on her family and herself was far too great for her studies and related activities to be her main focus and priority. However, this year is an entirely different story.

"I have spent my nights studying hard without the arduous worry of figuring out if I was able to pay my rent for the next month – and the feeling is indescribable," said Cabrera.

For nearly 10 years, Verizon has financially supported the college education of hundreds of Latino students through the Hispanic College Fund. Approximately 30 HCF Scholars, including three Verizon Scholars, will be honored at the Hispanic College Fund's 2011 one US Gala on Oct. 19.

About the Verizon Foundation

The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon, uses its technology, financial resources and partnerships to address critical social issues, with a focus on education and domestic violence prevention. In 2010, the foundation awarded nearly $67 million to nonprofit agencies in the U.S. and abroad. Through Verizon Volunteers, one of the nation's largest employee volunteer programs, Verizon employees and retirees have volunteered nearly 6 million hours of community service since 2000. For more information on the foundation, visit www.verizonfoundation.org.

About the Hispanic College Fund

Founded in 1993, the Hispanic College Fund (HCF) is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C., with a mission to develop the next generation of Hispanic professionals. For 18 years, the Hispanic College Fund has provided educational, scholarship, and mentoring programs to students throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, establishing a career pipeline of talented and career-driven Hispanics. The Hispanic College Fund annually awards millions of dollars, impacting thousands of students through high school to college and career. HCF has been recognized by USA Today as one of the nation's top 25 charities and has twice received Charity Navigator's top four-star rating for fiscal responsibility. In 2010, the College Board recognized HCF for program innovation. www.hispanicfund.orgCurated by HispanicTips :: Hispanic & Latino Redefined.
