Radio station KVYB changes its format, drops Rico, Mambo - Ventura County, California

Radio station KVYB-103.3 FM has pulled the plug on two popular morning personalities, Rico and Mambo, whose last day on the air was Friday.
Bruce Pollock, the station’s new general manager, said the station is going in another musical direction with less hip-hop and more mainstream music.
He said the contracts of the two radio hosts — Jaime Rangel, whose on-air name is “Rico,” and Daniel Herrejon, who uses the name “Mambo” — weren’t renewed.”*

Destino Awards $60,000 for Literacy & Expanding Health Care - Ventura County, California

On April 17, Destino: The Hispanic Legacy Fund will award eight grants totaling $60,000 to programs serving the Countys Latino community that further financial and reading literacy and promote health care professionals within the Latino community. These reflect priorities outlined in the landmark 2006 Destino health care report, funded by The California Endowment as part of its Focus Funders Program. Destinos 2008 grants came from distributions from its endowment fund, part of the Ventura County Community Foundation.
This annual grantee reception will be held at the Derby Club at Seaside Park in Ventura. “*

Star closes Spanish publication Mi Estrella - Ventura County, California

The final edition of Mi Estrella, the weekly newspaper for Ventura County’s Latino community, was delivered Saturday, announced George H. Cogswell III, publisher of The Star, which owned and published Mi Estrella.

Century 21 Real Estate LLC announced that the Hispanic National Mortgage Association (HNMA) recently honored Saul Serna, senior vice president of Hispanic Markets and Innovation for Century 21 Real Estate LLC with its first ever Lifetime Achievement Award. The HNMA recognized Serna in mid-October for his ongoing commitment to increasing Hispanic homeownership during its “The Future of Hispanic Lending,” networking luncheon and discussion held in Oxnard, Calif.Serna was one of 12 real estate and mortgage industry professionals honored during this event. Joining Serna from CENTURY 21 on the list of honorees was Kay Wilson-Bolton, broker/owner of CENTURY 21 Buena Vista, which is headquartered in Santa Paula, Calif. California church to be billed for illegal immigration rally

“A California church that is sheltering an illegal immigrant from Mexico and her U.S.-born infant son will be billed nearly $40,000 (€28,845) for city police services during a weekend protest by anti-illegal immigration activists, officials said.
Mayor Paul Miller, who called United Church of Christ congregants irresponsible for “harboring an illegal immigrant,” told the City Council on Monday that he was ready to issue the $39,306 (€28,345) invoice right away, the Ventura County Star reported.”

Oxnard’s first Latino police chief, Robert John Hinostro, dies at 91 - California

“Those who knew Robert John Hinostro often spoke about his pioneering efforts as Oxnards first Latino police chief and his long list of other community contributions.
But to those closest to him, Hinostro was first and foremost a family man who was always there at every school event, sports game and family celebration, often playing his favorite songs on his harmonica.
Hinostro, a longtime Ventura County resident, died Friday at his Oxnard home of complications from pneumonia. He was 91.”

“When Doug Green took his position as executive director for the nonprofit AIDS Care 12 years ago, one of the first things he did was visit a man who was being treated for AIDS at Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura.
“I remembered swallowing hard and thinking it scared me a bit,” Green recalled. “I went into the room, and there was this young, attractive Latino male in his late 20s. By the neat part in his hair and easy smile, I could tell he cared about himself and he came from people who took care of him. But there he was, struggling with his life.”"
