From fiery rhetoric about Arizona's controversial new immigration law to the racially-motivated murders of Hispanics in Pennsylvania and Long Island, New York, there are increased attacks on Latinos on all fronts.

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists is bringing together a dynamic group of community leaders and journalists to address the need for accurate and fair news coverage of Latinos during its 28th Annual Multimedia Convention & Career Expo in Denver next week.

The 2010 Opening Plenary/Town Hall, titled: Latinos, the Newest Demons? The Need for Accurate News Coverage to Abate the Hate is open to the public and Latino community leaders throughout Colorado are being invited to attend.

The panel, comprised of community and news leaders, will examine how misperceptions about Latinos have led to a climate of discrimination and violence; and the need for the community to have an active voice, and for journalists to lead strong, accurate coverage.

The session will be moderated by Tina Griego, a columnist at The Denver Post. Panelists include (more panelists to come):

* Polly Baca, the first Latina to be elected to the Colorado State Senate. She was also the executive director of the Latin American Research and Service Agency (LARASA), which documents trends and issues affecting Hispanics in Colorado.
* Richard Lamm, former three-time governor of Colorado. Lamm is now the co-director of the Institute for Public Policy at the University of Denver. Lamm, who was a Democratic governor, has taken a hard line against immigration and raised concerns about diversity, multiculturalism and the country's rapid demographic changes in past speeches and proposals.
* Amber Tafoya, attorney and Democratic candidate for District 4 of the Colorado State House of Representatives and a former Public Policy Director for the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition.

"Grupo Salinas, Fundacion Azteca America and the International Center for Journalists presented yesterday a high-level panel discussion about the challenges that face the Latino community, including the importance of participation in the 2010 Census and the passage of a successful Immigration Reform Bill.

The white paper presented by University of Denver professor Debora Ortega, in conjunction with Grupo Salinas and Fundacion Azteca America, made a series of recommendations, including the suspension of immigration raids during the summer months of 2010, when enumerators canvass neighborhoods for follow-ups to census questionnaires. The report also proposes coordinated informational programs on all four national Spanish-language television networks -- Azteca America, Univision, Telefutura and Telemundo -- to increase trust in the questionnaires and inform in a step-by-step manner how to properly fill out the forms. Finally, the report recommends continued hiring of culturally-relevant local workers at the U.S. Census.

"A complete census count is the single most important issue for our community," said Luis J. Echarte, Chairman of Fundacion Azteca America and Azteca America Network. "As a critical step in our democratic process, we will continue to dispel any misconceptions about the process and encourage our community to be accurately counted."

The 2010 Census is an essential tool for distributing federal, state and local budgets. It is also fundamental for representative participation in the U.S. Congress.

The message on the census was echoed by many of the panelists during the event.

"Wherever we can, we should tell Latinos to participate (in the Census). This is a matter of civic participation," said former Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez. "Community groups, media and radio personalities that are vocal on all issues should be vocal about the Census."

"Our goal is to count everyone. And we count on our partners to fulfill this goal," said Marilia Matos, Associate Director for Field Operation of the U.S. Census Bureau.

On the issue of immigration reform, the panelists were optimistic that a working solution could be achieved soon, hopefully in the first half of next year.

"We have never had prosperity in this country without immigration," said Gutierrez.

Also present on the panel was Noticiero Azteca America correspondent Armando Guzman.

The complete white paper: The State of Latinos: Census 2010 can be reviewed at www.fundacionaztecaamerica.org, and the archived blog from the event is available at ijnet.org.

"Azteca America, a Grupo Salinas Company, and the University of Denver Latino Center presented yesterday evening on Capitol Hill a report entitled "The State of Latinos 2008: Defining an Agenda for the Future."
The report calls for a presidential commission on Latino issues to increase Latino access to vital educational, health, economic and civic opportunities. The report also concludes that a lack of immigration reform widens disparities and limits the future progress of the Latino community and the nation.
Representing Senator McCain were California Senator Abel Maldonado and Marco Gonzales, a former aide to Senator Pete Domenici and private practice attorney. Also present was Leslie Sanchez, an independent Republican strategist.
Surrogates for Senator Obama were members of his National Latino Advisory Council Congressman Charlie Gonzalez (TX) and former Attorney General of New Mexico and current Chair of MALDEF Patricia Madrid, as well as Los Angeles City Council President and national co-chair of the Obama for President campaign Eric Garcetti.
During opening remarks, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair and Congressmember Joe Baca (CA) commended the State of Latinos project for uniting national Latino organizations, adding that only through unity will the community advance.
Azteca America and Fundacion Azteca America Chairman Luis J. Echarte pledge continued support for the Latino agenda recommendations, "We will concentrate on pushing the findings of this white paper to be put into action and to ensure that the promises made during the current political cycle become concrete policy."
Also in attendance were: Congressmember Grace Napolitano (CA) and Congressmember Raul Grijalva (AZ), Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, Service Employees International Union Executive Vice President Eliseo Medina, NALEO Executive Director Arturo Vargas, LCLAA Executive Director Gabriela Lemus, Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute Executive Director Octavio Hinojosa, NDN Vice President Andres Ramirez, Republican National Hispanic Assembly Chairman Danny Vargas and Voto Latino Executive Director Maria Teresa Petersen, among other distinguished guests.
The report focuses on five issues of importance to the Latino community: education, health care, the economy, immigration and the Latino vote. Latinos face major challenges in gaining access to these important services. The report advocates collaboration among the nation's Latino organizations under the umbrella of a presidential commission as the most effective way to ensure change.
The topics covered are of vital importance to the nation as a whole. However, the efforts take on special significance due to the high and growing number of Latinos in U.S. public schools, and their overrepresentation in high school dropout rates. Cultural and communication barriers for public services such as health care are very costly to the nation in the near and long term. Although the state of the economy affects citizens across the nation, the predominance of the housing downturn among current economic woes is especially difficult for the Latino community, given its ties to the construction industry.
Full text of the report available at http://www.fundacionaztecaamerica.org or www.du.edu/newsroom/releases/media/agendalatina.pdf. "
