“While mainstream music retailers have seen falling profits – the defunct Tower Records chain was under Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year – having to compete with online music and major discount stores, the smaller, specialized Latin record shops have been holding on, industry experts say.

Its due, in part, to a small fraction of downloaded music being of the Latin American variety. Last year, only 293,000 of the 32.6 million albums digitally downloaded were in that genre, reported music sales tracker Nielsen SoundScan.

“Most of them Hispanic customers don’t have Internet,” said Lester Ramos, owner of Discoteca Y Deportes Tierra Caliente on Anaheim Boulevard.”

“Tierra caliente, Duranguense, norteño cumbias and more are on tap in a weekend full of musical choices.

The top tierra caliente group, Beto y Sus Canarios, headlines a bill at Club Fuego on Saturday with Julian Garza and Victor Hugo Ruiz y Su Grupo Zaaz. The groups latest CD, “Contigo Para Siempre,” includes the tunes “Colombia Rock,” “Muchacha Bonita,” “Esta Noche,” “Desesperado” and “Mis Dos Amantes.”"

“Gunmen shot dead Mexican musician Javier Morales in the western state of Michoacan where drug-related violence is rife, police said on Thursday.

Morales, who sang “norteno” music, a style linked to drug cartels, was shot six times on Wednesday night. The state prosecutors office said the 28-year-old singers body was dumped in a plaza in the town of Huetamo, part of the Tierra Caliente region of Michoacan.”
