“The “100 Years of Mexican Music” exhibit, sponsored by Tequila 100 Anos(TM), arrives in Los Angeles, closing a multi-city tour that began in May on a high-note. Beginning July 31, adult, legal purchase age Latinos and the general community will enjoy this unique photo exhibit curated by Steven Loza, Professor of Ethnomusicology at UCLA and Adjunct Professor of Music at the University of New Mexico.

“This is a unique opportunity for Los Angeles residents to learn and appreciate the cultural richness of Mexico through a free historical tour featuring Mexican artists from diverse music genres,” says Loza, who offered counsel to the selection of artists featured in the exhibit as well as biographical references.

“We are proud to bring to the city of Los Angeles a representation of Mexican culture that - just like Tequila 100 Anos - is inspired by its roots and created with the passion and dedication of its people. Tequila 100 Anos - along with many of the artists featured in the exhibit - has also become one of Mexicans’ favorite drinks in this country,” says Antonio Portillo, Brand Manager for Tequila 100 Anos.

Embracing the unique atmosphere of 1907 to 2007, original pictures of performers such as Agustin Lara, Pedro Infante, Lola Beltran, Los Lobos, Angelica Maria, among others, will be on exhibit for one month.

“100 Years of Mexican Music” may be appreciated Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Plaza Mexico at 3100 East Imperial Highway, Lynwood, California 90262.

John Paul DeJoria to Become Principal Owner of Patron(R) Tequila; Bacardi to Buy Minority Interest

Filed under [ Business ] [ Food ] [ Press Releases ] [ Blogante Business ] [ Blogante Business Essentials ]

“John Paul DeJoria, co-founder of Patrón® tequila – the world’s top-selling ultra-premium tequila – today announced an agreement that will make way for the funding of a children’s charitable trust, while investing in the continued growth of the company. Although the specific terms of the agreement are confidential, they provide for Mr. DeJoria to become principal owner of the parent company of The Patrón Spirits Company (“Patrón”), so that he can further his dedication to the development of the brand – a dedication that has spanned nearly two decades. As part of the transaction, Bacardi Limited, the largest privately held spirits company in the world, will purchase a significant minority stake in the company through a subsidiary, according to Barry Kabalkin, Vice Chairman of Bacardi Limited.

The transaction will result in a payment to the Estate of the late Martin Crowley in exchange for its interest in the company. In accordance with the terms of Mr. Crowley’s will, the Estate will contribute the money to the Windsong Trust, a charitable trust created by Mr. Crowley to support the education of underprivileged children across the globe.

Mr. Crowley teamed up with Mr. DeJoria, who is also the co-founder and Chairman of the Board of John Paul Mitchell Systems, to found Patrón® in 1989. “Martin and I shared a commitment to help those in need of assistance throughout the world, and I’m pleased to say that implementation of this agreement will make a truly meaningful difference to those who deserve it most,” explained Mr. DeJoria. He added, “The company has done extremely well, due in large part to our outstanding team of employees, and we have an incredible opportunity to build upon that success with Bacardi, while realizing Martin’s dream to help the world’s underprivileged children.”

Facundo L. Bacardi, Chairman of the Board of Bacardi Limited, said, “John Paul DeJoria and Martin Crowley are to be congratulated for creating an extraordinary, hand-crafted product and achieving its enormous success in the marketplace – and for their contribution to the growth of the tequila industry overall. We look forward to this new relationship and to working together.”

The Co-Executors of the Crowley Estate also are looking forward to the opportunities that will result from this agreement. “This agreement will ensure that Martin will be remembered for helping to educate disadvantaged children around the world,” said Co-Executor Gigi Osco-Bingemann. Co-Executor Vadim Fridman added, “Gigi and I are excited to finally begin to fulfill Martin’s legacy.”

Although Bacardi and Patrón intend to operate independently from each other and the agreement does not provide for changes in the day-to-day operations of Patrón or in Patrón’s management or distributor network, the relationship is expected to lead to beneficial synergies for the company.

“Bacardi and its brands have set many standards in the spirits industry and its worldwide experience can certainly help us grow in markets both inside and outside of the U.S.,” said Ed Brown, President and CEO of Patrón. “We look forward to gaining from their international experience as we continue to grow Patrón® around the world.”

Patrón is wholly owned by Caribbean Distillers Corporation, Limited, which also owns Anguilla Rums, Limited (owner of Pyrat® rum), CDC S.A. de C.V. (the Patrón® related Mexican operation), and Ultimat Spirits GmbH, worldwide distributor of Ultimat® ultra-premium Polish vodka.

Under the agreement, Bacardi will hold one seat on the board of directors of Patrón’s parent company. Mr. Kabalkin will be appointed to the board position. With respect to the new arrangements, Mr. Kabalkin commented, “Patrón® is one of the fastest growing products in the entire spirits industry, and becoming a significant shareholder is a fantastic opportunity for Bacardi.” Mr. Kabalkin added, “We are a family-controlled company with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and global culture, and are proud of our highly focused portfolio of iconic brands. We now look forward to teaming up with Ed Brown, with the goal of enhancing the size and scope of the market for Patrón® tequila, an already incomparable brand.”

The parties intend to close the transaction, which is primarily subject to certain court approvals, within approximately 60 days.

Iglesias Nights - An Evening of Salsa Dancing and Latin Culture in Los Angeles

Tags: , , , , , ,

“Imagine a night of sensual Latin performers, igniting the dance floor with their passion for life, and their spirit for living. The vibrant strains of the music, combined with the flavors and spicy taste of Tapas and Empanadas, along with the distilled liquid fire of premium Tequila cocktails - this sounds like the opening of a hot new, Latin dance club in Los Angeles, right? Something you would expect in the City of Angels - but this time there is a twist. It is not a new club; it is a charity fundraiser, and a book signing hosted by Rodrigo Iglesias on Tuesday, July 29th, 2008.

Rodrigo Iglesias, a local Real Estate agent and investor, ranking in the top 1% of the Real Estate professionals internationally, wants the L.A. community to experience Latin culture at its finest with a night of dancing, fine food, and cocktails. The evening starts with Salsa Lessons with Rodrigo and Vai, recognized instructors and performers that have appeared in major commercials and on national television including the hit ABC show, Dancing with the Stars.

The duo recently choreographed for Chris Brown and Rihanna at the 2008 BET Awards and now lend their talents to create an explosive night of entertainment with a special appearance by Sandor, a Tony nominated choreographer from the acclaimed London production Forever Tango and his partner, Parissa, Antonio Banderas’ dancing coach in the film Take the Lead.

The night continues with the debut of the vocal styling of the singer Kapovianco, from Bolivia, performing his new single “Dale Pa’lante.” And as a bonus, proceeds from the event will go towards two of Mr. Iglesias’ favorite local charities - Green Dot Public Schools, a non-profit working to change the public education system in Los Angeles to emphasize leadership, and life skills, and Chicar, a non-profit organization dedicated to the empowerment of Latino youth through financial education, helping them to keep moving forward towards success, regardless of hardships or setbacks.

The event marks the WORLD PREMIERE of Rodrigo Iglesias’ new project, a complete Spanish translation and adaptation of the 1904 classic, “The Science of Getting Rich,” by Wallace D. Wattles. In 1995, Mr. Iglesias first experienced the impact of this book in its English form at a seminar conducted by renowned inspirational speaker, Bob Proctor. Proctor has inspired tens of thousands of people including Rhonda Byrne, writer of the extraordinarily successful book and movie, “The Secret.” Similarly, Rodrigo Iglesias was motivated to further his own career using the principals of the book, and then inspired to make this knowledge available to the Latin community for the first time - not only in Spanish, but in an easy “down to earth adaptation” of these teachings, and by integrating the training and methods into Latin music and lyrics. This unique music and lyrical combination will be heard for the first time at this special unveiling event - called Iglesias Nights.

When asked what moved him to use music as a teaching medium, Mr. Iglesias stated, “The lyrics and music help to lift the listener’s spirit, assist them in finding a sense of purpose, and open the mind and heart to a sense of passion and life that drives them to achieve anything they truly desire.”

This dynamic event is the first of many to follow with an emphasis on the flavors of Latin Culture, coupled with the much-needed encouragement of today’s youth towards achievement and prosperity. Mr. Iglesias plans to relentlessly continue his unique and powerful new approach to inspiring others to reach for their dreams - all while enjoying festive Latin music and culture at the same time. Iglesias Nights also promises to provide a great opportunity for upcoming Latin artists like Kapovianco to gain exposure, and to provide inspiration to the community, in a truly exceptional way. By combining the distinctive aspects of Latin food, music, and dancing, Rodrigo Iglesias has created a powerful method of delivering his message of personal and financial success to the public.

To learn more about Rodrigo Iglesias, Iglesias Nights, and the new Spanish language translation and adaptation of “The Science of Getting Rich” (ISBN - 978-0741446268), details can be found at the event’s website, www.iglesiasnights.com, or www.rodrigoiglesias.com. Tickets for the first event on Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 are available online for $30, with proceeds going to the two charities. A VIP package is also available, and media requests should be forwarded to Veronica Jacuinde, at (310) 508-1896.”

In Tijuana, a Market for Death in a Bottle - finding pentobarbital, a barbiturate commonly known as Nembutal is easy there

“He could have continued for quite a bit longer reciting from Tijuana’s extensive menu of contraband. One product from this border town, though, trumps all others in terms of shock value: death in a bottle, a liquid more potent than even the strongest tequila.

The drug, pentobarbital, literally takes a person’s breath away. It can kill by putting people to sleep, and it is tightly regulated in most countries. But aging and ailing people seeking a quick and painless way to end their lives say there is no easier place on earth than Mexico to obtain pentobarbital, a barbiturate commonly known as Nembutal.”*

“Perhaps nothing symbolizes the rise of the affluent Latino consumer more than the ascent of high-end tequila. Overall, the category grew 10 percent in 2007 to 7.9 million cases, according to Impact, New York. And the growth is being driven in party by high-end entries like Jose Cuervo’s silver Platino, which retails for around $58 for a 750 ml bottle. “There’s a whole segment of [affluent] Hispanics who are getting back to their roots, and not just drinking cognac, whiskey or scotch, but tequila,” said Rene Valdez, brand manager for Casa Herradura, an upscale tequila that’s now being distributed in the U.S. via Brown-Foreman, Louisville.”*

Diamond is normally an electrical insulator, but becomes a semiconductor when doped with the right impurities. Diamond film is tougher than silicon, so it could be useful for devices that must operate at high temperatures or under other harsh conditions.”*

Craftsmanship at Heart of New Specialty Salsas from Pace Foods - (I have to say that I love their new Salsa Verde - I used to make my own but this is a time-saving option for me)

Tags: ,

“Catering to the increasingly adventurous tastes of today’s consumer across the country, Pace Foods introduces a new line of five specialty salsas that are made with a combination of ingredients that include guajillo peppers, queso blanco and asadero cheeses, tomatillos and real blue agave tequila. The new line, which will be available in all markets, offers the same quality, consistency and craftsmanship that made “Pace” salsa and picante sauces the best selling salsa varieties in the Mexican sauce category. The five new bold varieties of flavorful salsas are:

* Tequila Lime Salsa — Real tequila from blue agave cooked down to concentrate the flavor, and then added to hand-selected jalapeño peppers, onions and the best tomatillos, topped off with just a hint of lime juice.
* Triple Pepper Salsa — A bold, rich salsa featuring green chili, serrano and guajillo peppers.
* Salsa Verde — Hand-selected jalapeños and chunks of tomatillos, seasoned with a splash of lime and spiked with smoked Spanish paprika.
* Pico De Gallo — Inspired by the classic, with chunks of hand-picked jalapeños, onions, and diced tomatoes and a touch of fresh cilantro.
* Mexican Four Cheese Salsa Con Queso — This Queso is packed with four distinctive cheeses – Monterey Jack, Cheddar, Asadero and Queso Blanco. Add a blend of jalapeños, sweet red peppers and onion and the result is extraordinary flavor.

Each new variety embodies the craftsmanship that the “Pace” brand has passionately perfected for over 60 years. “Pace salsas are known for using the freshest possible ingredients and delivering a consistent high quality that our consumers can count on in every bottle,” said Eric Shultz, Brand Manager. “The culinary team that developed this line of specialty salsas was extraordinarily passionate about each new variety. They were committed to the idea that each new variety would deliver an incredible salsa experience. This same commitment to excellence and detail went into the design of our new packaging, which features a black label that gives the bottles a distinctive look, which better communicates the quality of these premium salsas.”

“Our new specialty salsas were developed from scratch, rather than by adding different flavors to our existing salsa line,” said Cathy Marschean-Spivak, Creative Kitchen Leader for Pace. “We’re continually inspired by the ‘Pace’ brand’s heritage, which led our culinary team to search out the finest ingredients in order to deliver the flavor experience that ‘Pace’ is known for. For example, the Tequila Lime salsa uses real blue agave tequila rather than the tequila flavoring you often find, and the tomatillos make it the only green tequila lime salsa we’ve seen on the market. And the Mexican Four Cheese Salsa Con Queso includes authentic cheeses such as Asadero and Queso Blanco – harder to find, but worth it for the extra flavor.”

While the new line of specialty salsas offers a whole new take on dipping, “We found that consumers are looking for more variety and ways to use salsa beyond just traditional dipping,” said Shultz. “These five flavorful salsas showcase the versatility of salsa and really allow people to be more creative in using them to make every meal a special occasion.”

Each new variety of “Pace” specialty salsa is available in stores nationwide in a 16-ounce bottle with a suggested retail price of $3.49. Creative salsa recipes and serving suggestions are available on the “Pace” brand’s website, at www.pacefoods.com.

About Pace Foods

Pace Foods, founded in 1947 when David Pace introduced his original “Pace” Picante sauce, today is a leading brand of salsas and Picante sauces. David Pace was passionate about using the freshest ingredients, harvested and hand-selected in peak season to achieve the best flavor and quality – a tradition that has been proudly carried on by Pace Foods since it was acquired by Campbell Soup Company in 1995.”*

“Jose Cuervo, the world’s best selling tequila, has partnered with three-time World Cup participant Alberto Garcia Aspe to launch a groundbreaking campaign boasting Mexican pride. The campaign underscores the Cuervo Tradicional brand’s long-standing commitment as an official sponsor of the Mexican National Soccer Team here in the United States, and concentrates on soccer to deliver a social responsibility message to the multi-generational Mexican consumer.

With the slogan “Mexico, You Always Have It On,” Jose Cuervo Tradicional positions its brand at the forefront of Mexican national identity and at the center of its passion for soccer. This landmark campaign is a completely new approach for the brand. The innate pride of the Mexican culture is the driving concept behind this innovative campaign. Jose Cuervo Tradicional dresses in the team colors and waves its country’s flag to promote the traditional values that define the Mexican community.

To communicate its message, Jose Cuervo Tradicional has engaged Alberto Garcia Aspe, one of the best players in the history of Mexican soccer, to act as the official spokesperson.

“I am proud to join an effort that centers on the values of our culture,” said Alberto Aspe. “Wearing the jersey means representing your culture with dignity and honor. As a soccer player and team captain I always tried to be a role model on and off the field. Now my goal is to motivate the fans and remind them that, to us, living life responsibly is not an option, it is a tradition.”

Cuervo’s multi-faceted marketing strategy is fully integrated and incorporates an important investment in television combined with print materials, interactive, point of sale, events, and experiential marketing programs in a campaign designed to promote social responsibility. The first phase of the launch is scheduled to begin in February and coincides with the USA-Mexico match taking place in Houston, Texas. Cuervo Tradicional will present its new television spots which will be broadcast by Fox Sports en Espanol, Galavision, Azteca America, ESPN Deportes and the Discovery Network. Recently, these same Jose Cuervo Tradicional social responsibility spots were the first spirits advertising permitted by the Spanish language cable channel Galavision and national cable giant ESPN, breaking new ground for the spirits industry.

“Jose Cuervo Tradicional is proud to represent the rich history of Mexican culture, and shares a deep sense of identity with the Mexican National Soccer Team. With this campaign, Cuervo Tradicional embraces the honor and responsibility that lie at the core of its Mexican heritage,” says Toby Whitmoyer, Brand Director, Cuervo Portfolio. “We put on our team’s jersey to focus on our shared values,” he adds.

The campaign also includes an aggressive public relations program and radio spots scheduled to air on the leading radio station in Texas, California, Illinois and Colorado throughout the year.

Cuervo Tradicional is the first tequila created by the Cuervo family, and continues to be the best-selling 100% agave reposado tequila in Mexico. No one understands Mexican passion, tradition and pride better than Jose Cuervo. With its new campaign, Cuervo Tradicional emphasizes its intimate relationship with the Mexican consumer by joining the Mexican National Team for the next two years of soccer.

Mexico’s eco-parks let tourists see wildlife and nature near Cancun

“Going wild in Mexico doesn’t have to mean a tequila-fuelled beach vacation dancing on tabletops surrounded by carousing spring-breakers. In fact, the big party destination of Cancun is a short distance from lush parks hosting wildlife of another sort.

Neon pink flamingos, howler monkeys, brilliant toucans and mysterious sea turtles are just a few of the locals you can meet by trading la vida loca for a more nature-friendly trip.

Cancun and its surrounding area of the Riviera Maya are Mexico’s top destination for international travellers, drawing more than 3.5 million visitors a year. The beach was the lure for the first visit my wife and I took six years ago. But since then, we’ve returned to explore the Northern Hemisphere’s largest barrier reef off the coast, natural springs pocking the Yucatan, mangrove swamps, salt marshes and thick jungle.”*

Tequila bars take flight in Los Angeles

“WALK into an L.A. tequila bar and your head starts spinning even before you see the bottom of your first caballito (Mexican shot glass). Just the numbers are astounding — 96 blanco tequilas, 130 reposados, 121 añejos, a pour of a tequila named 1800 for $10 or of one called Tres-Cuatro-Cinco for $175.

On the heels of the tequila boom, tequila bars are multiplying, especially here in Los Angeles. And ever since Corzo tequila hit the bottle-service scene, it seems you can’t go to the mall without bumping into a temple of agave spirits. It’s a tequila lover’s paradise, but who’s helping the not-yet-aficionados distinguish 4 Copas from 7 Leguas or a Hacienda de Oro from a Hacienda de la Flor?”*

“Wine Enthusiast magazine has selected Casa Herradura as “Distiller of the Year” at its 2007 Annual Wine Star Awards competition. Casa Herradura, founded in 1870, is the first tequila distillery to win this prestigious award.

“We are honored that Wine Enthusiast has selected Casa Herradura as the 2007 Distiller of the Year,” said John Hayes, Managing Director for Herradura Brands. “At Brown-Forman, we will be toasting the eight generations of the Romo family, the founders of Tequila Herradura, and everyone at Casa Herradura for making us so proud.”

There were 45 nominees in nine award categories ranging from “Winemaker of the Year” to “Importer of the Year”. Casa Herradura was selected for its outstanding contributions to the world of spirits, with special attention to achievements recorded in 2007.

Earlier this year, Casa Herradura received multiple medals from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition for Tequila Herradura and el Jimador.

“We had more qualified candidates than ever this year, from a wider range of wine regions,” says Adam Strum, Editor & Publisher of Wine Enthusiast. “The traditional companies are showing vision in maintaining and improving the classics, while the newer companies are bold and creative. Both are pushing the boundaries further, and contributing to the growth and enjoyment of tine wine and spirits throughout the world.”

Renowned for being the tequila industry’s foremost innovator, Casa Herradura introduced the first Reposado tequila in 1974 and later launched the first Extra Añejo, Seleccion Suprema. In 1994, Casa Herradura launched el Jimador Tequila to honor the men who harvest agave plants. Today, el Jimador is the #1 selling tequila in Mexico.

Brown-Forman acquired Casa Herradura in January. “*
