Brazilian Super Production ‘Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands’ Coming to CaribeVision
Tags: caribevision, telenovela, television
CV announced today that the huge Brazilian super production, ‘Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands,’ will be showing Monday - Friday at 10 p.m., beginning this Friday, September 26. Don’t miss the miniseries premiere, which will be re-played Monday, September 29.
The story ‘Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands’ was inspired by the book of the same name by Jorge Amado, which has already been the basis of a successful 1975 film, and this production is another attempt to bring the tale of this particular romantic triangle to the screen.
Dona Flor (whose real name is Floripedes) is a cooking teacher. One Sunday during carnival she loses her husband, Vadinho, who was always getting himself into hot water. She spends a time in mourning, given over to grief and longing for her husband. But since she is in the full bloom of youth, and is rather attractive physically, she catches the notice of the respectable pharmacist Teodoro, whom she ends up marrying.
The differences between the two husbands are pronounced. Whereas with Vadinho, their bed was a battlefield, with Teodoro, passion is framed within the usual limits. If with Vadinho she felt a constant uncertainty and passion, with Teodoro, stability turns into tedium. Until one day when least expected, Vadinho’s ghost turns up in bed with Flor and Teodoro.
Fantasy or longing? Flor resolves (or rather dissolves) the triangle by accepting the possibility of two lovers to satisfy the eternal mismatching of human desires.
“This superb production goes beyond a simple tale and assumes the stature of romantic fiction, which the Brazilians know how to handle so well, and the Hispanic audience very much appreciates. ‘Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands’ is an important part of the history of romantic drama, and CaribeVision, bearing in mind the needs and priorities of its audience, is upholding its commitment to making a difference with programming that is in good taste and in keeping with the expectations of our viewers,” said Xose Manuel Barreira, Director of Programming for CaribeVision Broadcasting Network.
Characters:
Floripedes Paiva, “Dona Flor” (Giulia Gam) (Women in Love, Woman, Mandala) — Teacher at the “Savor and Art” cooking school. She is a virtuous and honest young woman who falls in love with Vadinho and marries him. Flor suffers over her husband’s bohemian personality and ends up becoming a widow. After years of mourning, she marries the neighborhood pharmacist Teodoro, the perfect husband. But she ends up missing Vadinho’s raunchy, passionate ways.
Valdomiro dos Santos Guimaraes, “Vadinho” (Edson Celulari) (The Tower of Babel, Taste of Passion, Captive Hearts) — He is an incorrigible flirter, bohemian and compulsive gambler. A lover of the nightlife, he falls in love and weds Dona Flor, but never abandons his old ways. Vadinho dies unexpectedly, while parading during Carnival, and comes back as a ghost to tempt Flor and interfere with her second marriage. She, however, is the only person that can see him.
Teodoro Madureira (Marco Nanini) (Walking in the Clouds) — He is the owner of the “Scientific Pharmacy”, a lover of classical music and one of the musicians in the local orchestra. He is an upright, shy, well-mannered, intelligent, ethical and extremely methodical man. He is suffocated by his mother, who tries to prevent him from having lasting relationships with women. He has a brief engagement with Violeta and a frugal affair with Madona. After his elderly mother passes away, Teodoro marries Flor, his longtime passion.
Rosilda (Walderez de Barros) (Woman in Love, Family Ties, The Clone) — She is Flor, Heitor and Rosalia’s mother. She is a dressmaker. Rosilda is a bitter woman who has always dreamed of perfect marriages for her daughters. She harasses Rosalia’s husband and refuses to accept Flor’s marriage to Vadinho, whom she considers a bum. On the other hand, she considers Teodoro a perfect man.
Rosalia (Virginia Cavendish) (The Thorn and The Rose, Labyrinth, Walking in the Clouds) — She is Flor’s sister and Moraes’ wife. She ignores her mother’s vicious comments about her husband and encourages Flor in her romance with Vadinho.
Moraes (Rodrigo Mendonca) (Chiquinha Gonzaga) — He is Flor and Heitor’s brother-in-law and Rosalia’s husband. A crude, simple but hard-working mechanic who thinks it’s normal for a man to cheat on his wife. A homely man whose fate it is to bear his mother-in-law nagging at him.
Heitor (Bruno Garcia) (Woman, The Maias) - Flor’s brother. He loves music but does not think he can make a living as a musician. Heitor will eventually find his future in arts. He is Flor’s accomplice in her suffering over Vadinho, for he understands women’s souls. He has a passion for Marilda.
Marilda (Thelma de Freitas) — She is Flor’s best friend and neighbor. Sampaio and Norma’s daughter, she dreams of being a singer. For the sake of her career, she breaks up with Heitor and has an affair with Propalato, the manager of the “New Tabaris” nightclub, where she begins her career. Marilda is a fiery youngster who fights for what she wants, ignoring the consequences of her deeds. She is a vain and seductive warrior.
Norma (Suely Franco) (The Thorn and the Rose, Taste of Passion) — She is Marilda’s mother, Sampaio’s wife and Flor’s friend. Doesn’t think her daughter should sing in nightclubs and shows up sometimes to drag her home by force. She is a mother with a golden heart, who is always willing to help her friends. Norma wants her daughter to find a decent husband. She is an active and untangled woman, and Flor identifies herself with Marilda’s mother better than with her own mother.
Sampaio (Joao Acaiabe) (Captive Heart) - He is Norma’s husband and Marilda’s father. He is usually found at home, in his pajamas, and is always in a cheerful mood. He has constant domestic squabbles with his wife.
Violeta (Lilia Cabral) (Family Ties, Taste of Passion) — She is Teodoro’s fiancee. Tries with all her might to conquer Mrs. Miloca, the pharmacist’s mother, but never manages, for the old lady is difficult. Violeta and Teodoro end up breaking up.
Mrs. Miloca (Myrian Muniz) (The Maias) — She is Teodoro’s mother. She fakes sudden health problems and spends most of her time in a wheelchair, pretending she can’t walk. She gets in the way of all of her son’s relationships because, as she’s a possessive and blackmailing mother, she wants to have him by her side for good.
Mirandao (Chico Diaz) (Hilda Hurricane) — He is Vadinho’s best friend and eternal companion. He has an affair with Marinalva, daughter of lottery boss Neca do Abaete, and is forced to marry her. But, much like Vadinho, Mirandao’s bohemian personality is stronger than himself. Even though he has four children, he spends his nights gambling or partying with women.
Arigof (Edson Montenegro) — He is a “Capoeira” fighter and “Babalao” (voodoo priest). Arigof is a good friend of Vadinho’s. He too is a lover of the night and a gentleman. Works as a driver for a local state official, whose car Vadinho uses to impress Rosilda.
Anacreon (Jackson Costa) — Another close friend of Vadinho’s who loves the nightlife, booze and women.
Robato Filho (Otavio Muller) (Walking in the Clouds, Labyrinth) — He is a poet who is part of Vadinho’s circle of friends.
Calabrez (Otavio Augusto) (Terra Speranza, Anything for Love) — He is the lottery kingpin and owner of the “New Tabaris” nightclub, where there’s a clandestine casino. He is married to Zulmira, with whom he has a lovely daughter called Celeste, and keeps Madona as a lover. Calabrez will wage war against Neca do Abaete for control of the city’s lottery. The war will escalate when their daughters get involved. He is a violent man, if it is necessary.
Zulmira (Solange Couto) (The Clone, Chiquinha Gonzaga) — She is the Calabrian’s wife, a native “mulatta”. She is dominated by her husband. A soft-spoken woman who is always willing to cuddle him when he needs attention. Zulmira only loses her class when she confronts her husband’s lover.
Celeste (Dira Paes) (Chiquinha Gonzaga) — She is the Calabrian and Zulmira’s daughter. She will get involved with Juliana, provoking a war between the two lottery bosses. Ironically, her first love will be Vadinho, to whom she gives her body and soul. The relationship, however, will be a frustration and she will seek harmony with Juliana.
Neca do Abaete (Lucio Mauro) (My Sweetheart) — He is the Calabrian’s great rival for control of the city’s lottery areas. He is married to Dora and father of Juliana and Marinalva. Like the Calabrian, Neca believes that his rival is luring his daughter to gather information about his lottery schemes. He forces Mirandao to marry Marinalva when he finds out about their romance.
Dora (Lu Mendonca) — She is Marinalva and Juliana’s mother, Neca’s wife. A woman controlled by her husband.
Juliana (Cyria Coentro) (Women in Love, Port of Miracles) — She is Neca and Dora’s daughter. She is an artist who graduated in New York. Juliana will have a romance with Celeste.
Marinalva (Ana Cecila Castro) — She is Neca and Dora’s younger daughter, Juliana’s sister. A sweet, dedicated girl, who falls in love with Mirandao, marries him and ends up having five children.
Noemia (Claudia Liz) (Uga Uga) — She is a socialite, the daughter of local banker Lemos Couto and Albertina. She has an affair with Vadinho, much to Flor’s despair, but ends up marrying Alberto.
Lemos Couto (Seraphim Gonzalez) — He is a powerful banker. He is Noemia’s father and Albertina’s husband. He ignores ethics. His bank goes bankrupt and he harms hundreds of clients.
If you want to be part of this romantic story, don’t miss CV’s grand premiere of “Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands” on Channel 48 (Miami) and Channel 34 (New York) beginning Monday, September 29 at 10 p.m.

A hit in Colombia, the telenovela tells the story of an attractive young prostitute who seeks massive breast implants to attract a rich cocaine smuggler. The show was one of the network’s most-watched premieres ever and, not surprisingly, nabbed this month’s number one spot on the Top 10 Overall Searches. Also topping the list was a group of beautiful women, including Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza, Italian actress Monica Bellucci, and Aracely Arambula, who just announced she is pregnant with boyfriend Luis Miguel’s second child. Rounding out the list was former FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) captive Ingrid Betancourt, whose recent rescue after six-and-a-half years of captivity created a worldwide media frenzy.

A survey published by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that 24% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 50 have a tattoo.
Victoria’s Secret Supermodel Adriana Lima, an ever-popular name on the Top Searches lists, is still making headlines after it was announced that she and basketball star boyfriend, Marko Jaric of the Minnesota Timberwolves, will be tying the knot. Following in Lima’s footsteps – four more models were among the most searched for images in July: British lingerie model (and reality TV star) Gemma Atkinson; Uruguayan-Mexican actress/model Barbara Mori, star of the hit telenovela remake, Rubi; as well as model Isabel Madow, known for her appearances on the Mexican edition of Big Brother VIP. Mexican television icon Roberto Gómez Bolaños, known to the world as Chespirito, also topped the list. Bolaños, best known for his roles as “El Chavo del Ocho” and “El Chapulín Colorado,” has been touring Latin America to present his play “11 y 12.”
In the number four slot, Puerto Rican Reggaeton star Don Omar has been cleared of all drug and weapons charges in relation to an incident dating back to 2004.The 30-year-old has been on trial in a court in Carolina, Puerto Rico for the last two weeks, after he was arrested in September 2004 by drug enforcement officers, who claim to have found him and two pals smoking marijuana. Portuguese footballer and heartthrob Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently plays for Manchester United, has also generated interest amidst speculation about a move to Real Madrid. Every month the Yahoo! Telemundo Top 10 Searches showcases the diverse interests and concerns of U.S. Hispanics around the net, from gorgeous celebrity sightings and salacious political news to funny jokes and the latest consumer obsessions.
