Effective August 29th at 11:59pm,  KTXZ AM 1560 will change it’s format to reintroduce to the Austin market a new music format that will feature Tejano Music. The format change will once again provide a venue for the promotion of the live Tejano music scene in the state capital.

In the coming weeks, due to changes in FCC rules and regulations, KTXZ will commence simulcasting the format in stereo on 95.1 FM here in Austin. The new format will feature Tejano, Norteno “Tejano Style” and Grupero Music.

Encino Broadcasting, LLC was founded this year for the specific purpose of acquiring KOKE. KTXZ and KELG by members of the Garcia family that previously owned KELG, KKLB, KTXZ and KFON. Those stations were sold to Border Media Partners in August of 2004 for 19 million dollars.

Dynamic Radio Broadcasting Corporation, owner of stations KELG, KKLB, KTXZ and KFON from 1985 through 2004, was founded by Austin Spanish Language broadcasting pioneer Jose Jaime Garcia. Sr. in October of 1985. Garcia Sr. first started his career in radio broadcasting in Austin in September of 1952 at KTXN 1370 AM, he would subsequently become the founder and principal owner of Austin’s first full-time Spanish Language radio station KMXX 102.3 FM that was established in August of 1976.

Garcia died on September 6, 1986 after a career of 34 years in broadcasting.

KELG continues today as Austin’s longest running Heritage Spanish Language radio station in Austin, Texas.

National Council of La Raza to Present 2008 NCLR/Ford Motor Company Affiliate of the Year Award to the Committee for Hispanic Children and Families at NCLR Annual Conference in San Diego

“The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., will present the 2008 NCLR/Ford Motor Company Affiliate of the Year Award to the Committee for Hispanic Children and Families (CHCF)—an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Latino children and their families in the New York City community. CHCF, a member of NCLR’s network of nearly 300 Affiliates and a leader in youth services and public advocacy, will be honored at the 2008 NCLR Annual Conference Awards Gala on Tuesday, July 15 in San Diego, CA. In addition to the award, CHCF will receive a $25,000 cash award.

“CHCF’s dedication to promoting the advancement of Latino families has defined its affiliation with NCLR and is in line with NCLR’s mission of building a stronger America,” said Janet Murguía, NCLR President and CEO.

CHCF offers a number of direct health education programs and services that encompass a range of public health community education and outreach initiatives. While grounded in direct services, CHCF is active in the local, state, and national policy arena. CHCF provides free civic education and history classes to the community in English and Spanish, as well as assistance in completing the Naturalization Application.

“CHCF is honored to be recognized by NCLR for serving New York’s Hispanic community.” said Elba Montalvo, Executive Director of CHCF. “NCLR’s support will allow us to continue creating opportunities and opening doors for Latino families.” This year, Montalvo will complete her second and final term on the NCLR Board of Directors.

The Affiliate of the Year Award is presented annually and is an opportunity for NCLR to honor an Affiliate for exemplary work in positively impacting the local community and for supporting NCLR’s policy and programmatic initiatives. Generous support from the Ford Motor Company makes this recognition possible.

Four Affiliates were chosen as regional honorees for their outstanding work in specific geographical areas and each receive a cash award of $5,000. The regional honorees for 2008 are The Unity Council from Oakland, CA (California); Tejano Center for Community Concerns from Houston, TX (Central region); La Clínica del Pueblo from Washington, DC (Eastern region); and Youth Development, Inc. from Albuquerque, NM (Western region).

For more information about NCLR or the Affiliate awards, please contact Jacqueline Pacheco at jpacheco@nclr.org or (202) 785-1670, or visit www.nclr.org.”*

Latin Music USA - A Multi-Media Event Premieres January 21, 2009 on PBS

“From Latin Jazz and Mambo to Salsa, Tejano, Chicano Rock, Latin pop, and Reggaeton, Latin Music USA tells the story of the rise of new American music forged from powerful Latin roots and reveals the often overlooked influence of Latin music on Jazz, Hip Hop, Rhythm and Blues and Rock and Roll - and on all of American culture. It’s a fresh take on our musical history, reaching across time and across musical genres to embrace the exciting hybrid sounds created by Latinos, musical fusions that have deeply enriched popular music in the US over more than five decades.

The series features memorable characters and vibrant music and dance showcasing the impressive range of Latin music in the US, including, among others, Salsa greats Willy Colon and Marc Anthony; the Latin-inflected sound found in much of sixties Rock and Roll from the Drifters to Motown to the Rolling Stones; the genius of Texas accordion player Flaco Jimenez; Carlos Santana; Linda Ronstadt; the legendary Chicano rock band Los Lobos; megastars Gloria and Emilio Estefan; Ricky Martin and Juanes; Miami rapper Pitbull; and Reggaeton performers Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderon. The life experiences of these and many other unforgettable artists will reveal how Latinos have reinvented music in the United States and forged new identities within this country, while never losing sight of their own rich traditions.

Produced by a world-class production team at WGBH and the BBC, Latin Music USA “invites the audience into the vibrant musical conversation between Latinos and non-Latinos that has helped shape the history of popular music in the United States,” says series producer Adriana Bosch. The multimedia project is anchored by a four-hour documentary series that premieres on January 21, 2009 on PBS stations nationwide.

“Latin Music USA has the potential to be a cultural milestone, advancing Americans’ understanding of Latino rhythm and music as a dynamic player in shaping American society past, present and future,” said John F. Wilson, senior vice president and chief television programming executive, PBS. “And music, the universal language, communicates this phenomenon in a most irresistible way.”

Raider of the lost archives - Ramon Hernandez squeezes a history of Latino music into his apartment - San Antonio

“Over the last 30 years, Hernandez has transformed himself into a human encyclopedia of Latino music knowledge. In the early 1960s, he began collecting literature, periodicals, recordings, photographs, and other memorabilia on Latinos in the music industry, from the crooners of the ’40s to the rock ’n’ rollers of the ’50s to anyone who has ever been associated with Tejano, conjunto, and música ranchera.

“Ramon has one of the most extensive music history collections in the world,” says Steve Williams, founder of the Museum of American Music History. “There are very few collections that are as detailed as his that will take you from the origins of an artist throughout his entire career in pictures, documents, and mementos.””*

A Message To Tejano Music Fans …

There are many exciting things are taking place in the Tejano music industry. In the past two years however, changes in radio station ownership, marketing and programming have all but completely eliminated the beloved music of the Tejano community from terrestrial radio in Austin, Texas.  Consequently, the lack of a full-time Tejano radio station has created a void for Tejano musicians and artists, businesses and the Mexican-American community as a whole. The mission of the Austin Tejano Music Coalition is to bring awareness of these and other issues to the forefront and to convey the message that we want and deserve a full-time Tejano radio station which serves the entire Mexican-American community.  This e-newsletter is meant to provide an avenue of communication for Tejano music fans in Central Texas. We hope you will find it helpful and informative.  -LIZ HERNANDEZ, EDITOR

““Tejano music, in general, has reached a certain plateau,”said Tejano singer Elida in a recent interview. “I feel it is not going anywhere. You sort of have to change with the times, get a feel of what is out there.”

Elida has taken her own prescription, so to speak. She’s taken her step in a new direction, on her latest CD “Domingo.” She and her group went for more of a pop cumbia feel, to, as she puts it, “find a new and different sound.”*

“Professionals interested in Hispanic marketing are starting their day with a fresh Cup O’ Mambo (mercurymambo.com/blog/)from Mercury Mambo, the premier Hispanic event marketing (www.mercurymambo.com/mamboevents.html), sales promotion (www.mercurymambo.com/sales-promotions.html) and branding agency. With a track record (www.mercurymambo.com/services.html)of representing America’s most prestigious retail products, Mercury Mambo publicly launches its way into the blog world with content that provides the public and marketing professionals with the latest trends in Hispanic marketing.

Music, film, culture and current trends (not chisme) are just a few of the topics that will be featured in the blog, Cup O’ Mambo, which is being launched simultaneously with Mercury Mambo’s new, social media friendly Web site.

As marketers turn their focus on the increasing Hispanic market, “Cup O’ Mambo” will provide a daily dose for readers with regular posts relevant to the Hispanic community. Austin-based Mercury Mambo is kicking off their blog Mambo-style with a special music series beginning in May, Austin’s Latino Music Month. The posts will include pictures, video clips and the latest trends in Austin’s diverse Latino music scene, which is becoming nationally recognized. Mambo will be out in the field to provide their audience with up-to-the-minute information on a range of musical acts from different genres, including Norteño, Tejano, Latin Alternative and Salsa, amongst others.

Mercury Mambo’s launch into the Web 2.0 world will include RSS news feeds and interactive features set to roll out in the summer. The updated features will enhance the company’s conversations with its clients, consumers and extensive team of brand ambassadors in key Hispanic markets throughout the country.

The Web site also incorporates the agency’s favorite color, verde, which is more than a color, it’s a mission. The eco-friendly agency recently did a green renovation of a new office building to account for their expanding staff, a sign of growth that Mercury Mambo Agency Partner,Liz Arreaga (www.mercurymambo.com/people.html), says is a reflection of the marketplace.

“Hispanic consumers are not a ‘one size fits all’ demographic and they continue to be a significant group for the American economy. As a result, marketers are increasingly turning to agencies like ours who can provide expertise and strategy to effectively reach the Hispanic consumers from the bottom up,” stated Liz Arreaga.

Mercury Mambo, whose motto is “Where Culture and Commerce Collide”, is excited about the blogging possibilities. “Our agency has been reaching Hispanic consumers successfully since 1999. Having an online resource to share our expertise, as well as our ‘Mambo Magic’, is exciting for us,” stated Becky Arreaga (www.mercurymambo.com/people.html), Agency Partner.

Mercury Mambo, who represents top retailers such as Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages plc, U.S. Cellular, The J.M. Smucker Company, Anheuser-Busch, and Diageo, provides marketers with expertise in event marketing programs and brand experiences that empower Hispanic consumers. Cup O’ Mambo fans can expect consistent posts that are rich in experience and understanding of the Hispanic consumer and culture.”*

Paul Revere of Texas – Juan Seguin

“Juan Seguin and his men provided the rear guard for Sam Houston’s army during the Runaway Scrape. When he arrived at San Jacinto, however, he learned his company of soldiers had been assigned to guard the camp while others were to fight the decisive battle on April 21.

“Seguin protested vigorously that no one in Texas had suffered more from Santa Anna than they, no one had a greater stake in the outcome, and indeed, they had no homes to go to unless the dictator was defeated,” historian Haley wrote. Houston agreed. “The Tejanos took their place in the line, with scraps of cardboard in their headbands to identify them as Texans.””*

“Protesters rallied near the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo today, voicing discontent over what they say is under-representation of Hispanics at the event.

The group, VIVE Tejano-Houston, three weeks ago urged would-be rodeo visitors to stay away this year, and stepped up the boycott today because it marks the show’s annual Go Tejano Day, a celebration of Hispanic heritage. More than 100 protesters in bright yellow shirts lined Kirby near Loop 610, next to one of the show’s main entrances.”*
