Expert sees expanding legal immigration as nations destiny
Tags: Tamar Jacoby
“With an estimated 12-to-15 million illegal immigrants already in the United States and more coming to the tune of 1.5 million each year, the illegal immigration debate is one certain to dominate presidential and congressional politics in 2008.
Immigration issues are also likely to be part of the political landscape in Mississippi in the 2007 statewide elections. Against that backdrop, the reliably conservative Business & Industry Political Education Committee brought a surprising keynote speaker to its annual meeting in Jackson.
Tamar Jacoby, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a nationally respected expert on immigration issues, is a rare breed of think tank author and speaker - a fiscal conservative who believes that “sensible levels of open immigration” is in this nations best interests.”

Defusing the election’s immigration powder keg
Tags: citizenship, Tamar Jacoby
“Researcher Tamar Jacoby has blown the lid off immigration as being a vital election issue. What she has to say has implications for candidates trying to use it as a last-minute wedge issue to divide Americans in November’s midterm elections.
Jacoby, who works for the Manhattan Institute, is a leading conservative scholar on immigration and citizenship. In the current authoritative journal “Foreign Affairs,” she argues that the issue is driven mainly by politicians and the media”

“The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC), the nation’s leading advocate for Hispanic-owned businesses in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, is pleased to announce that Senator John McCain (R-AZ) will address an Immigration Summit to be held on Tuesday, April 4th, 2006, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. Sen. McCain will join Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-AZ) and Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) as well as Mexican Ambassador Carlos de Icaza, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Vice President Randy Johnson, Service Employees International Union Executive Vice President Eliseo Medina, immigration expert Tamar Jacoby and prominent business leaders and immigration experts in an insightful, informative session that will provide congressional, business and international perspectives on the issue of immigration while addressing legislative proposals for immigration reform that are currently being debated in the U.S. Senate.
The Immigration Summit is designed to offer a thorough bipartisan review of the different economic aspects and challenges presented by the highly complex and politically-charged issue of immigration reform. The event concludes with a question and answer session where session participants will have the opportunity to pose their comments and concerns directly to the decision-makers and experts involved in the national immigration reform debate”
