MIAMI, FL – August 3, 2008 – GolTV, the only live bilingual channel delivering 24/7 soccer, regrets Dish Network’s decision to discontinue carriage of GolTV’s unmatched international soccer coverage effective Friday afternoon, August 1. Dish Network’s loss of GolTV was the result of its decision to impose unreasonable contract demands and terms on the independent and privately-owned minority network, GolTV.
Millions of DISH subscribers have lost GolTV’s exclusive, live from London, TV coverage of the Emirates Cup. This decision also falls on the verge of 2010 World Cup qualifying matches and season kick-offs of GolTV’s exclusive TV coverage of the Spain’s La Liga on August 31 and Germany’s Bundesliga on August 15.
The satellite giant decided to remove GolTV, from its America’s Top 250 and Dish Latino programming packages. Consistently ranked in the top five Hispanic satellite and cable-delivered networks, Spanish and English-speaking soccer enthusiasts have been calling the South Florida-based soccer programming network over the weekend to voice their stunned reaction by the sudden and unprecedented loss of one of their favorite sports networks.
“Dish Network has demonstrated total disregard for independent networks, the millions of soccer fans we represent, and minority-owned businesses by this action,” said Rodrigo Lombello, GolTV COO. “We urge upset Dish viewers to contact us or Dish to voice their concerns.”
Dish Network subscribers can take action by emailing GolTV at info@goltv.tv .

A new television web channel has just emerged. It is Lingus.tv (www.lingus.tv), a channel dedicated to teaching Spanish as a foreign language. Lingus.tv is fundamentally distinguished for basing its teaching method on a sitcom, its own production, making the core issues of its teaching model funny, entertaining and amusing.
“Our aim is to promote interest in studying Spanish in a pleasant, attractive way, based on the concept of leisure,” affirms Sergio Gazeau (www.lasbuenaslenguas.com), founder of Lingus.tv. “The Internet has become the principal leisure tool of society, especially among young people, and our challenge is to have fun whilst learning”, he adds.
Following the trend marked by Internet, the Lingus.tv teaching system is based on a philosophy of self-service, where the users have a video library of contents available classified in levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced) labeled depending on the themes they cover and the linguistic skills they teach. Among these themes we can find chapters like “Mi rutina” or “Pacocinando”, where one of its characters, Paco, shows the user how to cook a typical Spanish dish: the Spanish potato omelette, all marked in a frame of humour.
Each episode of the series will come with its Spanish sub-titles and will last approximately two minutes. Video is the core to the education process and includes its respective teaching material: complete transcript of the script, English translation and a selection of notes that introduce grammatical and cultural concepts.
In the words of its founder, “The project, that is filmed in different parts of Spain, aims at being something more than just teaching Spanish, become a true window display of the culture and life style in Spain.” With this twofold objective, the chapters that appear on the web “will gradually not only introduce grammatical or semantic concepts, but also sayings, proverbs and cultural elements specific to our country. We want foreigners to learn man-in-the-street Spanish and make them gradually assimilate our culture and form of communicating with one another,” he concludes.
Lingus.tv broadcasts new episodes of its sitcom every Tuesday and Thursday and in the next few months, it will extend its offer of contents to include new programmes on its programming grid.

There is a multiplicity of journals originating in Spain and the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (SSLAC) in the health sciences of relevance to the fields of epidemiology and public health. While the subject matter of epidemiology in Spain shares many features with its neighbours in Western Europe, many aspects of epidemiology in Latin America are particular to that region.
There are also distinctive theoretical and philosophical approaches to the study of epidemiology and public health arising from traditions such as the Latin American social medicine movement, of which there may be limited awareness. A number of online bibliographic databases are available which focus primarily on health sciences literature arising in Spain and Latin America, the most prominent being Literatura Latinoamericana en Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS) and LATINDEX.
Some such as LILACS also extensively index grey literature. As well as in Spanish, interfaces are provided in English and Portuguese.
Abstracts of articles may also be provided in English with an increasing number of journals beginning to publish entire articles written in English. Free full text articles are becoming accessible, one of the most comprehensive sources being the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO).
There is thus an extensive range of literature originating in Spain and SSLAC freely identifiable and often accessible online, and with the potential to provide useful inputs to the study of epidemiology and public health provided that any reluctance to explore these resources can be overcome. In this article we provide an introduction to such resources.

Lizárraga. “Her wide ranging experience with organizational management, strategic planning, and oversight, along with her deep commitment to the Hispanic community will be an exceptional asset to our organization. She will play a vital role as we continue to refine the focus of our organization, strengthen our structure, and develop exciting new partnerships.”

“Rayas is a perfect example of the strong Latina leadership that is so prominent in our Hispanic business community today,” Lizáarraga continued. “She joins our organization during an exciting time as we gear up for the 29th Annual Convention and Business Expo in Sacramento, California, this September. “The political landscape is rapidly changing and now is the time for immense progress in this arena,” said Hilda Rayas. “I am passionate and excited about the key role Hispanics will continue to play in America’s future. I am honored to be of service to this organization to help move this necessary and important agenda to the forefront of mainstream America.”
As COO of the organization, Rayas will have dual responsibility for the financial management and all internal operations of the Chamber as well as oversight of the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
