OTHER STORIES IN THIS ISSUE:
David Archuleta on Top
David Archuleta, the first Hispanic contestant to make it as a finalist on American Idol, talks to PEOPLE en Espanol about his newfound fame, how he almost did not make it, and his plans for the future. “I’ve always imagined myself on stage,” says Archuleta, who at 17-years-old, placed second, after David Cook, on the hit reality show series.
Even after millions of votes and his “Archie” fan club, he still remains humble. “I thought nobody liked to hear me sing,” says Archuleta. However, his accomplishments are nothing short of a miracle. About a year and a half ago, Archuleta received medical treatment for paralysis in his vocal cords. “The doctor said there is somebody up there who wants him to sing because, medically speaking, he should not be able to,” says Archuleta’s father.
He’s now gearing up for the American Idols Live! Tour 2008 and will also start recording his first album as a solo artist. “I feel a connection when I hear other people singing. If I can accomplish that, it would make me feel so good,” says Archuleta. (Page 143)

Latin Telenovela stars are so hot, so sexy, so extreme — and so emotional. Thanks to VH1, American viewers will get their first taste of how addicting these shows and stars truly are. VH1 is in search of America’s “numero uno telenovela star” and will chronicle the journey to stardom in its newest original series, “Viva Hollywood!” premiering Sunday, April 13 at 10:30 PM ET/PT. After its 90-minute premiere episode the series will move to its regular time slot of 10 PM ET/PT each Sunday night.
The “Viva Hollywood!” cast, a bilingual group of aspiring Latino and Latina telenovela stars: Alexcy, Berto, Enrique, Geovannie, Gisel, Jainmy, Kalain, Janet, Jenn, Roseny, Silvia and Vinci will move into the “Casa De Locos” where they must master the “7 Deadly Sins of Telenovelas:” passion, lust, charisma, drama, fire, seduction and scandal. The “sins” are disciplines each cast member must learn in order to capture the over-the-top style and flair of a true telenovela star and impress the celebrity judges: the award- winning actress and singer Maria Conchita Alonso and accomplished actor singer/song-writer Carlos Ponce. International celebrity astrologer and Latino legend, Walter Mercado, will appear in each episode to give the contestants guidance on their journey and alert the cast of their upcoming challenges. Sofia Vergara, Daisy Fuentes, Angelica Vale, Charo, Christian De La Fuentes, Lorena Rojas, Maria Celeste Arraras and Perez Hilton have signed on as celebrity guests. “Viva Hollywood!” is the first reality show where the losers aren’t just eliminated, they are killed off. As each week contestants watch themselves in an over the top telenovela death scene to see if they live another day or “die” trying. Ay Dios Mio!
“Each day, an astounding two billion people around the world watch telenovelas which are a vibrant and historic part of the Latino community. We wanted to tap into and expand on the passion that surrounds this phenomenon,” said Jeff Olde, Executive Vice President, Original Programming and Production, VH1. “If you love telenovelas, you will love this show, if you never heard of a telenovela you will love this show because the stakes are huge with a real chance at international superstardom and that is an appeal and a hook that is universal.”
“With ‘Viva Hollywood!’ VH1 has given World of Wonder and our partners Latin World Entertainment the opportunity to produce a groundbreaking show that crosses cultural lines, and pays tribute to our obsession with the passion, fashion and machinations of telenovelas,” said World of Wonder Executive Producer, Tom Campbell.
In the end, only one of the 12 bilingual contestants will have what it takes to win the coveted title of America’s “Numero Uno Telenovela Star,” and a prize package that includes a contract with Telemundo and a role in one of their upcoming telenovelas, representation from artist management company Latin World Entertainment ( latinwe.com ), a year’s lease at one of Miami’s hottest condominiums, the Flamingo South Beach and a cash grand prize of $100,000.
VH1.com will sneak peek episode one beginning Tuesday, April 8 — five days before the series’ on-air premiere and will be home to exclusive video content throughout the season. Additionally, each episode will be available on VH1.com every Monday following its Sunday on-air premiere.

Tags: book, diabetes, obesity, recipe, Reno, Sofia Vergara“Obesity continues to be a serious health issue facing millions of Americans. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated that 1/3 of Hispanics are considered obese. While most strategies to address our widening waistlines focus on changing what we put on our plates, an analysis of U.S. beverage habits called What America Drinks(1) suggests we should also take a closer look at what’s in our glasses.
The new report suggests that beverage choice may be the forgotten factor in weight management. Specifically, What America Drinks indicates that what we drink may have a powerful impact on what we weigh. The in-depth analysis found that teenagers and adults (ages 14-49) who drank a lot of nutrient poor sugar-sweetened beverages, like soft drinks, fruit-flavored drinks and presweetened teas and little milk tended to weighed more, then their peers who drank more milk and fewer sugary beverages less, regardless of calories. Milk drinkers also had better quality diets that were richer in nutrients.
Claudia Gonzalez, a renowned certified Hispanic nutritionist and author of the book “Gordito Doesn’t Mean Healthy”, explains: “Given the high obesity rates among Hispanics and the reality that they are predisposed to certain diseases like diabetes and heart problems, it becomes essential to educate them about the importance of looking more closely at the beverages they intake.”
Drinking milk is an important part of a healthy diet and may help promote a healthy weight. By reducing calories and increasing your physical activity, along with following the government’s advice for consuming adequate amounts of healthy foods like lowfat and fat free milk, you may be more likely to maintain a healthy weight.
Chicago Weighs Beverage Choices
To urge Americans to think about their drink, the milk industry has teamed up with dietitians and school nutrition professionals to promote healthier beverage choices, a message being spread from coast-to-coast via the Think About Your Drink Tour, a 75-city grassroots initiative stopping in Chicago from June 13-17, 2007.While in town, the Think About Your Drink Tour will host a series of free events aimed at shining the spotlight on the fact that choosing nutrient-rich beverages like lowfat milk instead of nutrient-poor, sugar-sweetened beverages like soft drinks may be a key strategy to help fight obesity. At events, visitors can:
– Receive a personalized analysis of daily beverage habits.
– Speak with a registered dietitian who can explain how nutrient-rich beverages may help maintain a healthy weight.
– Sign up for the Think About Your Drink Challenge pledging to drink 24 ounces of lowfat or fat free milk every 24 hours and have a chance to enter Chicago’ own Think About Your Drink Sweepstakes to win some fun got milk? prizes.
– Get exercise tips from representatives of Curves International, the leader in women’s fitness.
– Sample lowfat or fat free milk from Dean, Swiss Valley Farms, Foremost Farms, Kemps, Bareman, Prairie Farms, and Liberty Dairy.
– Take a souvenir Milk Mustache photo and check out a six-foot glass visual detailing what women, on average, drink each day.
– Take home “Sabor Latino”, a limited edition recipe booklet filled traditional healthy Hispanic recipes.
– Obtain home a copy of the “Think About Your Drink” booklet filled with tips from Dra. Aliza and beverage recipes from stars such as Sofia Vergara and Ana Maria Canseco. To learn more about the Think About Your Drink campaign and the findings from the What American Drinks report, log onto ThinkAboutYourDrink.com to find tips and tools to help make better beverage choices. Tags: Colombia, latin america, novela, Sofia Vergara, telenovela“It sounds like the plot from a telenovela. Sofia Vergaras brother was assassinated in a kidnapping that went awry in her native Colombia nine years ago. Four years ago she developed thyroid cancer. Fifteen years ago she became a mother at 20. But none of that is apparent in the upbeat and sublimely unaffected woman who perches on a folding chair in a meeting room here looking like a living Rubens.
A huge star in Latin America, Vergara has yet to achieve that status here. But people who remember anything about the short-lived sitcom, “Hot Properties,” cant forget the zaftig Latina who inveigled her way onto the small screen.
