English is not the new Spanish on Radio Premios Juventud proves that out on TV

“Some Spanish language radio stations seem to think that English is the new Spanish. I am not sure what makes radio programmers add English language songs into their playlist.

I guess their logic fell in with those who insist that Spanish is dying out and the only way to attract young Hispanics is to add increasingly larger doses of English. You know, you hear it from the SiTV crowd all the time. They keep hoping that if they say it loud enough, over and over, it will be true. It isn’t. “*

As one of the few Latino anchors on national news television, Sanchez has established himself as a seasoned journalist who has reported from war-torn Nicaragua, on the invasion of Grenada, and on the fall of Jean-Claude Duvalier’s regime in Haiti. In addition, Sanchez was a major part of CNN’s Peabody Award-winning coverage of Hurricane Katrina, during which he reported for eight continuous hours during live coverage. He received the distinguished journalist award from the American Medical Association and an Emmy for an autodocumentary series called Cuando salí de Cuba (When I left Cuba) chronicling his rise from Cuban immigrant to his position a major American news correspondent. ‘Sin Limites,’ The National Association of Latino Independent Producers Examines Surprising Trends in Pan-Latino Cinema

Filed under [ Art y Culture ] [ Entertainment ] [ Hispanic News ] [ Press Releases ] [ Blogante Entertainment ] [ California ]
Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

“The National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) and HBO(R) announce the 9th NALIP National Conference, co-chaired by producer Frida Torresblanco (PAN’S LABYRINTH) and playwright Elaine Romero (Secret Things). The Conference will be held March 7-9 in Dana Point, California. Online registration is available now at http://www.nalip.org/conference2008.

The theme for the 2008 Conference is “Sin Limites: Trends in Pan-Latino Cinema.” NALIP will bring together the best in Latino entertainment to spotlight the remarkable growth in cross-boundary and cross-cultural creations that have developed in the Latino media landscape. The box office success of PAN’S LABRYRINTH made in Spain by a Mexican filmmaker now living in the U.S., the 2007 Sundance breakaway film LA MISMA LUNA and LADRON QUE ROBA A LADRON, the high-grossing Spanish language release by U.S. Latino filmmaker Joe Menendez and Miami-based producers Panamax, combined with the export of “Betty La Fea” from Columbia in ABC’s “Ugly Betty” and the Cuban/Cuban-American experience examined in CBS’s “Cane” have drawn attention to the emergence of a true Pan-Latino aesthetic with global appeal. “The moment has arrived when barriers are being broken and art is becoming truly universal,” states co-chair Frida Torresblanco. “It’s exciting that the industry has truly put its eye on Latin talent. The cross-over is traveling in both directions: major filmmakers are curious to experience shooting in other countries, and foreign creators for the first time are seriously considered an important part of the industry.”

NALIP Conference 9 kicks off with a welcome cocktail reception hosted by HBO, followed by a screening of the Fox Searchlight film LA MISMA LUNA which is due out in theaters March 2008. The Conference program includes three days of engaging case studies, workshops and plenary on film, television and documentaries that have broken barriers, crossed borders and combined financial and cultural elements from Latino communities around the globe. The Conference will also showcase top Latino comedy, acting and music talents, feature prominent keynote speakers, and announce the 2008 ESTELA Awards cash grants which are endowed by the McDonalds Corporation and given to two filmmakers who are ascending quickly in the field.

Executives from HBO, Universal, SAG, CPB, Warner Bros., CBS, ABC, NBC, PBS and many others are scheduled to attend and participate. These professionals, who are interested in fostering independent Latina/o talent, represent the areas of producing, development and representation, funding, distribution and broadcasting. “Our national Conference every year is a wild ride for Latino filmmakers, “says co-chair Elaine Romero. “It’s kind of like, ‘get your business cards ready because you cannot network fast enough.’ NALIP gives Latino filmmakers and content producers the lift they need to soar quickly to higher levels in their professional work. Our programs instantaneously connect top leaders in the film and television industry with NALIP members at all stages of their careers. One of the most exciting things that happen at the Conference is that people find their teams, their future collaborators. Matches are made. Projects are born. NALIP stands by year-round like the mid- wife! The help does not end at the end of the Conference.” For a complete list of additional speakers, panels and keynotes please visit www.nalip.org/conference2008.

Concurrent with Conference 9 and with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, NALIP presents the fourth Latino Media Market(TM). Thirty-two select feature production and development projects, documentary works-in-progress and reality television series ideas have been accepted to participate in a special executive meeting series. The Latino Media Market is designed to boost each producer’s project, so that producers can arrange financing and attract broadcast licenses. Live at the Conference, SiTV will give participants an opportunity to get their first break into the industry as the exclusive non-scripted television channel, hearing series and concept pitches. SiTV will award a $2,000 prize, plus a 4-month development option to the strongest series concept pitched at the Market.

NALIP will also hold a Loteria raffle with all of the proceeds going to one lucky Conference attendee in order to advance their project. “Everyone needs some cash to invest in a project or finish a short film, pay an editor or buy that piece of equipment,” says NALIP Executive Director Kathryn F. Galan. “This Loteria gives everyone in the community a chance to chip in and help a Latino filmmaker advance, plus you might be the lucky winner!” Second and third place prizes of software and equipment are also included.

About NALIP:

Founded in 1999 by a group of Latino producers, educators and media activists, NALIP’s mission is to promote the advancement, development and funding of Latino and Latina film and media arts in all genres. For the latest information about NALIP Conference 9, or to register online, go to www.nalip.org/conference2008. Si TV Launches Groundbreaking Collective of Community-Driven Lifestyle and Culture Websites, Connecting Young Latino Artists and Consumers While Creating Authentic, Integrated Opportunities for Advertisers and Strategic Partners - Press Release

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

Si TV, America’s first and only media company to target the millions of 18-34-year old Latinos who prefer their entertainment in English, announced today the launch of a major new initiative that springs from the creation of two all-new community-based websites, entertainment.sitv.com/ and trends.sitv.com/. These sites provide the first content-based digital platform that delivers indie content tailored to young Latinos, while offering unprecedented opportunities for Latino artists and giving the advertising community a link to this high-growth demographic. Verizon Wireless, AOL Latino and Payless ShoeSource are among the strategic and advertising partners who are already demonstrating their commitment to the acculturated Latino population through integrated, multi-level partnerships with Si TV’s new digital initiative.

These websites are the first to deliver content created exclusively by and for the most dynamic demographic in America today, the Latino 18-34 segment, which is growing five times faster than total adults 18-34*. With 78% of English-dominant Latinos online** and 63% of young Latinos online four or more hours per day*** (81% of whom are acculturated and surf in English****), Si TV has identified an opportunity to bring the fresh content this demo craves to a mainstream audience.

“The launch of our new websites and related digital partnerships represents our company’s evolution from a cable/satellite network to a laser-focused media company with multiple distribution platforms and revenue streams. Reaching far beyond marketing the Si TV television network, our highly differentiated, content-based web strategy will offer young Latino adults unprecedented opportunities to be part of an online content-based community which creatively reflects the bicultural reality of their daily lives. For our business partners, Si TV’s entertaining, culturally-relevant content represents a bridge to build an important relationship with our coveted core audience by reaching them wherever they are, watching TV, online, or on the go,” says Michael Schwimmer, CEO of Si TV.

On the new Si TV sites, these engaged consumers will find a compelling alternative to the usual hit-driven culture, with cutting-edge, indie content about music, film, gaming, cars and more, as well as extensive video offerings from Si TV shows and talent. These robust social networking sites focus on content-creation and content-sharing, and allow users to create their own profiles, upload photos and blog. In addition, entertainment.sitv.com/ and trends.sitv.com/ offer consumers the rare opportunity to interact directly with emerging Latino artists across multiple platforms, including on on-air, online and mobile technology.

These new websites effectively create the world’s first digital talent incubator uniquely designed to give voice to and open doors for Latino artists and content creators across a wide spectrum of talents: musicians, songwriters, actors, comedians, deejays, athletes, writers, poets, models, performance artists and others. Artists can post profiles, videos and web links in a culturally relevant environment with a targeted, enthusiastic audience for their work.

“No longer do young Latino artists have to wait to be discovered — we encourage creative individuals to use our customized platform to build and grow their own community,” says Lisa Black, Senior Vice President of Digital Media for Si TV. “We created these sites with the unique characteristics of our audience in mind — their passion, their engagement, their connection to the culture and each other. That’s why these sites are all about connecting and sharing, with a definite voice and creative aesthetic that benefit both the talent and the enthusiastic website user.”

Featured artists whose work generates extensive community response can be discovered and promoted by Si TV and the company’s network of sponsorship and strategic partners in on-air, online, and mobile campaigns and promotions. In this way, the advertising community enjoys access to an extraordinary new pool of truly authentic, relevant talent and voices. Si TV has already signed contracts with 150 emerging artists, and has launched significant, integrated campaigns using this talent base on behalf of advertising and strategic partners including Verizon Wireless, AOL Latino and Payless ShoeSource.

Si TV has already created spots and promotions for its advertising and strategic partners, pairing them with talented emerging Latino artists who are part of Si TV’s signed talent roster, generating an array of unique, organic branded entertainment opportunities, such as:

Si TV and Verizon Wireless teamed up in August in a talent search for a new Latino co-host of Verizon Wireless’ V CAST Video mobile entertainment service. Aspiring performers were invited to post their video auditions and profiles online at www.beonvcast.com/, where website visitors could then vote for their favorite candidates. The new V CAST host — Angie Jerez of Queens, NY — was just selected from among the top 10 vote-getters. Jerez makes her V CAST debut on November 8 when she interviews the hottest Latin artists on the green carpet at the 8th Annual Latin GRAMMY(R) Awards in Las Vegas.

Si TV joined forces with AOL Latino to launch a hub (entretenimiento.aol.com/television/sitv) where users can enjoy highlights from the hottest Si TV shows. In addition, AOL Latino helped promote Si TV’s “Jammin’,” a talent showcase for up-and-coming Latino bands. The bands were first discovered on Si TV’s unique user-generated community website, and voted on by passionate and opinionated sitv.com/ users. The winner, L.A.-based band Glory for the People, appears on Si TV’s flagship series, The Drop, during its new fall season.

For sponsor Payless ShoeSource, Si TV developed a customized, integrated beauty makeover sweepstakes featuring Carmen Palumbo, whose Si TV-owned website, luvcarmen.com/, dispenses dating advice and tips. The resulting 90-second spot gives a Si TV viewer a makeover with the help of Payless shoes and accessories. Using Payless product as the starting point, Carmen builds the ultimate “first date look” with a new hairstyle, makeup and wardrobe.

In addition, the network has completely revamped and relaunched its original website, sitv.com/, which will now focus exclusively on information about Si TV programming on the company’s linear TV channel, including schedules, talent bios and blogs, video clips, behind-the-scenes footage and other community tools. Also, trends.sitv.com/ will launch on October 29th.

“Sí TV, America’s first and only television network to target the millions of 18–34-year old Latinos who prefer their entertainment in English, will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by launching its first ever public interest initiative, a campaign designed to encourage young Latinos to serve their communities by volunteering. The “Sí The Difference” campaign will include original promo spots featuring artist-activist La Bruja, whose compelling messages about the power of the individual will run throughout Hispanic Heritage Month on Sí TV and sitv.com.

The Flow & Tell episodes will be packaged with additional tune-in promos promoting volunteerism.

Sí TV will highlight La Bruja, who performs frequently at schools, universities, hospitals, and community centers around the country, inspiring countless young girls through her program Latinas4Life””an initiative to empower Latino youth. i TV Takes the Lead in High-Definition TV for Young Latinos: Network Announces the 2008 Launch of Si TV-HD, The Nation’s First and Only HD Channel for the U.S. Latino Audience

Tags: , , , , , ,

“Consistent with its leadership in serving Americas young Latino audience, Si TV announced today that it will launch Si TV-HD in 2008, the first network to offer this nations large and growing Latino audience a 24/7 channel of compelling high-definition content designed for their tastes and lifestyle. The channel will be packed with high energy shows shot in original high-definition format, covering music, reality, comedy and other genres. Si TV has been preparing for this moment since the inception of the network in 2004, when it first began producing high-definition programming, creating to date more than 200 hours of original hi-def programming. Verizon FiOS TV, Verizons new fiber-optic television service, which currently operates in 10 states and already carries Si TV on its most widely distributed tier of service, expects to launch Si TV-HD in 2008.

Si TV’s target audience, the 18-34 bilingual and English-dominant Latino, is the primary engine powering the explosive growth of the U.S. Latino population, the largest and fastest growing ethnic group in America today. The acculturated Latino audience, for its part, controls the majority of the almost $900 billion of current U.S. Hispanic buying power, which is forecasted to surpass $1.2 trillion by 2010. Research also confirms the intuitive concept that this group of consumers spends the vast majority of its television viewing hours watching English-language programming, which is the basis for Si TV’s English-language programming format. Largely overlooked until now, however, is that young acculturated Latinos purchase large volumes of HDTV sets: more than one in three (35%) English-dominant Latino 18-34 TV viewers has HDTV, according to the Simmons NCS/NHCS Fall 2006 Adult Full Year Study.

“Young Latinos are a huge economic and political force in America today and they deserve ”” like every consumer ”” the ability to enjoy the benefits of high-definition television made by and for them,” said Michael Schwimmer, CEO of Si TV. “Si TV’s audience is a vibrant influence in our country, and it shouldn’t have to wait any longer for HDTV now that it’s become mainstream fare. Si TV was the first to serve the acculturated Latino audience with a dedicated network and we’ll be the first to provide Latinos the best in high-definition digital entertainment.”

Si TV is currently in production on two new high-definition series for 2008 that will exploit the benefits of the HD format. Past Port, in which young U.S. Latinos return to the countries of origin of their parents or grandparents, will feature scenic footage from a variety of stunning Latin American locations. Total Combat, a gritty reality series about a young Latino couple running a Mixed Martial Arts Fighting League, will bring the blood, sweat and in-your-face intensity of mixed martial arts vividly to life in high definition. Other new Si TV series for 2007-2008 ”” including Flow & Tell and Home Page ”” will also be shown in HD on Si TV-HD.

Si TV’s lively, authentic content-which the network produces specifically for its 18-34 acculturated Latino audience-lends itself well to the HD format. The network already features more than 200 hours of original programming that were shot in HD, including: The Drop, Unacceptable Behavior, The Rub, Dating Factory, and Latino Laugh Festival: The Show.

WHY:
According to Marketing y Medios, the year 2007 is predicted to be a record breaking year for the advertising communitys commitment of $1.5 Billion to Spanish-language TV. TV as a key indicator represented about one-third of the $4.3 billion in Spanish-language ad sales for 2006, compared to $3.8 billion in 2005. Programming targeting Latinos is also on the rise. Is the tide turning? Hispanic-Net, in an effort to shed light on these trends and subsequent opportunities and challenges, has put together a best in class panel of Northern California’s Latino leaders to review the current and future of Latino Media & Entertainment.

Hispanic-Net takes a proactive role towards entrepreneurialism and seeks to illuminate the business issues affecting the Latino community at-large. “Recognizing the growing Latino indie rock scene, Sí TV launched an innovative multi-platform series, Jammin’ on Sundays at 10:00 p.m. PST and EST. The 30-minute program highlights the dreams, struggles and triumphs of talented up-and-coming rock bands and pairs them with rock legends, Joan Jett, Los Lobos, and John Densmore from The Doors. This intimate portrait of young musicians is Sí TV’s first series to combine multiple distribution platforms including on-air, broadband, VOD and mobile.

“We understand that not all young Latinos identify with hip hop or reggaeton, preferring rock instead. Jammin’ connects aspiring bands with established musicians who mentor and take them under their wing,” said Ed Leon, SVP of programming and production of Sí TV. “It turns a simple meeting between an unsigned band and their idols into the opportunity of a lifetime.”

In January, sitv.com will launch Jammin’: On Stage, an interactive user generated community site. Bands from across the country will have the opportunity to upload their video, build extensive profiles where users can vote and select the top three to perform at a music industry showcase.

“Our Jammin’ digital media initiative will leverage the power of community and social networking to give all indie bands the opportunity to build and interact with their audience,” said Lisa Black, SVP of digital media for Sí TV.”
