“Should Paul Mertz’s plan take root, swapping Zinfandel wine for Zacatlan cider could soon be commonplace.

The local real estate agent thinks Zacatlan, Mexico — the center of an apple growing region northeast of Mexico City, already with one ticking tie to Lodi — would make a great sister city.

“I think it’s got a lot of potential,” Mertz said Friday, noting his proposal is still in the early stages.”*

“The removal of three teachers from Angevine Middle School’s dual language program has prompted concerns from the Latino community, and exposed a broader dilemma of how teachers can meet the needs of native English- and Spanish-speaking students alike.

Administrators at the Lafayette middle school changed the responsibilities of three of the staff, including an exchange teacher from Boulder’s sister city in Mexico, with just weeks left in the school year. All of the teachers remain employed with the school district until school ends Thursday, but none are working solely in the school’s bilingual program.”*

“Calling immigration “an inevitable fact,” the archbishop of Yakima’s Mexican sister city said immigrants need to retain their religious and cultural values, but also adopt the best traits of this country.

“Immigration can have good effects, not only economically, but culturally and religiously,” the Most Rev. Alberto Suárez Inda said, speaking through a translator. “But it does not run without risks.

“It’s an exchange,” he said. “I think it is very important that in that exchange, our people do not lose their values but that they also learn the best of the culture of this country, which is discipline, work (ethic, and) legality.”"*

“Eagle Pass is a border town that prides itself on being both Texan and Mexican, a community with many cultural and financial ties that bind it to Piedras Negras, its sister city across the Rio Grande.

But the U.S. government’s proposal to build a giant fence along the border threatens to remake the landscape in the name of national security, undermining the relationship between the two cities and, some say, permanently scarring the riverfront.

Local leaders and residents who are fighting the fence have become increasingly frustrated with what they regard as the federal government’s heavy-handed tactics, which include threatening letters, lawsuits and swift legal judgments. “*

“With heavily armed Mexican soldiers patrolling Nuevo Laredos graffitied, rubbish-strewn streets, Mario Cepeda is having a tough time convincing anyone to take his horse-drawn city tour.
