Three high school students from Texas and California were recognized by the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) Foundation for their top scores in the National BizFest Youth Entrepreneurship Competition. The competition took place in September at the Annual National Convention in Miami Beach and the winners were announced at the culminating Chairman's Gala.

BizFest is an intensive entrepreneurial training program, sponsored by Sam's Club, which teaches Hispanic high school juniors and seniors how to turn their hobbies into profitable business ventures. At this national event, 12 of the top students from the regional BizFest competitions vied against one another for three coveted spots and the chance to win a college scholarship in recognition of their achievements. The first, second and third place winners were slated to receive $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000 scholarships, respectively.

In this year's national competition, first place was awarded to Denise Graham from Rowe High School in Texas who presented her plan "Plaza Play Place." Second place went to Aranza Garza from J. Economedes High School in Texas with her plan "Home Cookin'," and third place went to Luis Venegas of Sweetwater High School in California for his plan "Trans-Fi."

"Crafting and delivering an effective business pitch is a learned skill that most students don't begin to develop until their late college years," says USHCC President & CEO Javier Palomarez. "The BizFest Competition provides serious students advanced educational opportunities that will help them prosper in their college years, and beyond. Congratulations to Denise, Aranza and Luis and the nine other top competitors for their success in this rigorous competition."

During the BizFest program, expert trainers from the University of Texas – Pan American (UTPA) taught the students various business techniques including how to network in business environments, how to deliver presentations and how to develop succinct pitches. Students also worked to refine their winning business plans from the regional competitions then presented them to an esteemed panel of judges which included: Sam's Club representatives Joy Dawkins, Membership Manager, and Pablo Ramirez, Membership Manager; Julian Canete, President, California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; and Asusena Resendiz, President, Irving Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Throughout the competition, the students also attended various workshops and educational events and had the opportunity to bring their theoretical networking lessons to life as they mingled with successful Hispanic entrepreneurs and business leaders.

"This is an amazing opportunity for Hispanic students," says Brett Biggs, Senior Vice President, Operations at Sam's Club South Division. "Not only do they learn how to work together in a productive manner, but they also receive advanced business training from expert educators, and have the chance to receive financial help toward the pursuit of higher education. These young adults are the future of tomorrow, and we are proud to be able to help them in any way we can."
