"Denise Segura, a professor of sociology at UC Santa Barbara, has received the Outstanding Latina Faculty in Higher Education award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE). In addition, she is president-elect of Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS), the largest organization of sociologists dedicated to feminist studies.

"To have your research acknowledged by your peers is very gratifying," Segura said of the AAHHE award, which will be presented at the association's annual conference in San Antonio later this week. "These are scholars who, like me, are doing research around issues of pressing concern to Latino populations." Segura also is an affiliated faculty member in the Department of Feminist Studies, the Department of Chicana/o Studies, and the Program in Latin American and Iberian Studies at UCSB.

The AAHEE award recognizes Segura's pioneering research in social inequality, stratification and mobility among Chicano and Latino populations in the United States. Her work on Chicana and Mexican immigrant women workers has been widely published, and her early theories on "triple oppression" among Chicanas are widely cited. In addition, her analysis of "subjective mobility" among Chicana and Mexican immigrant workers offers insight into the mechanisms that maintain labor market and institutional inequality.

The AAHHE is a cross-disciplinary, higher education organization primarily focused on the need to develop Latino/a faculty and senior administrators. It also serves as a leading research and advocacy group for Hispanic higher education issues. Throughout its history, the AAHHE has been involved in numerous activities with the goals of increasing Hispanic faculty in higher education, bringing Hispanic issues to the attention of the larger academic community, and recognizing the achievements and accomplishments of Hispanics in higher education.

As president-elect of Sociologists for Women in Society, Segura's term continues through 2011. She is the first scholar from UCSB and the first Chicana to become president-elect of SWS. In addition, she is one of only two individuals from the UC system who have been so honored. The other is Francesca Cancian, a professor of sociology at UC Irvine.

SWS is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization of sociologists and others who are dedicated to maximizing professional opportunities for women in sociology, exploring the contributions of sociology to the investigation of current gender arrangements, and creating social change. The organization also publishes Gender & Society, a top scholarly journal in both women's studies and sociology.
Hispanic citizens born outside of the United States often face significant barriers to obtaining ID consistent with the challenges facing foreign-born citizens generally. And of course, there are the 12 million undocumented immigrants who live among us. While some states in the past had granted licenses to anyone who provided proof of residency, that is already changing as the REAL ID regulations take effect.

"There was a lot that made you love San Diego in the early ’90s. And then there were Luis Alberto Urrea’s essays in the Reader. His gritty accounts of border life offered a shock-and-awe contrast to the idyllic existence north of the border. In his descriptions of the dumps, orphanages, and police precincts of Tijuana, Urrea revealed the harsh reality that resided right on our doorstep even before border books came into vogue. He has since gone on to publish his expressive voice in all literary forms. His last two books — The Devil’s Highway, a real-life account of a border crossing, and the mystically intoxicating novel, The Hummingbird’s Daughter — have secured his place among the finest contemporary writers in the nation."

"On June 14, 2008, before launching the second photo shoot with Maite Perroni, NYX is hosting an autograph-signing event where fans can meet Maite and take home a personalized picture and beauty goodies. There will be free makeovers, snacks and drinks, raffles, goodies, music, and media coverage. The event is in appreciation of all the fans that supported Maite and NYX since the beginning of their successful union. Media are welcome to participate at the private interview. To participate, press badges must be obtained before the event. All interested co-sponsors and media coverage for this event are welcome.

NYX officially announced Maite Perroni as their spokes model at their launch party in Mexico City on September 27, 2007. The first photo shoot was in July 2007, in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, California, which spanned across three days. Since the union, NYX and Maite have received abundant accolades, support from fans and customers, and have built a larger following by uniting them.

About NYX: Founded in 1999 by Ms. Toni Ko and headquartered in Los Angeles, CA, the primary goal was to provide professional quality cosmetics at discount store prices. Today, NYX accomplished that challenge. It is one of the top cosmetics companies with outstanding growth in the United States. Its products are characterized as ultramodern and are directed for the public, with emphasis on makeup artists and adventurous makeup aficionados with their wide range of bold colors that never discontinue. As for the name, NYX stands for the Greek goddess of night comparing her by way of metaphor to the young 'goddesses' that show sophistication and boldness in the modern-day night scene. NYX products are marketed in more than thirty countries, covering five continents, and are selling in stores such as Ultra, Longs, Rite Aid, independent salons, and bricks-and-mortars across the globe.

About Maite Perroni: She won our hearts in her debut as "Lupita" in the hit Spanish youth series "Rebelde" and left us with a special message that anything is possible. She was born on March 9, 1983 in Mexico City D.F. At only eleven months old, she and her family moved to Guadalajara. An accomplished singer, actress and songwriter, Maite gained popularity as an actress playing Lupita and as a singer being a member of the Latin phenomenon group RBD, in which she is said to be the "mother" of the group. She studied in Mexico's Center of Artistic Education for two years where she discovered her passion for acting. Maite is involved in various charities and enjoys volunteering her time for those in need. Maite's love for dance led to a campaign with sport giant Nike that promoted the importance of dance. Receiving a great amount of support from the Hispanic population in the US, NYX strengthened the bond by enlisting Maite as their spokes model and hiring advertising specialists Patricia and Tony Gracia of Power Media Group, Inc. to oversee their campaign focusing on the Hispanic market.

About Power Media Group,Inc.: Headquartered in Los Angeles, California PMG is a company that offers an extensive portfolio of advertising services in the Hispanic Media. It counts on professionals in the different areas of advertisement to achieve the challenges of its clients. The dedication that PMG gives its clients is shown in the rapid growth of the company.

"An innovative exhibition that traces the genesis and evolution of Chicano and Latino music over the past 70 years is currently on view at the University of California, Santa Barbara and is accessible via telephone. "Sounds Latino!" continues through June 30 and highlights renowned singers and groups whose papers and other collections are represented in the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives ( CEMA ) located in UCSB's Davidson Library.

The bolero, mambo, corrido, swing, boogie, Tex-Mex, and even punk rock are woven into the fabric of Latino cultural heritage, and the multidisciplinary exhibition engages visitors through the visual and theater arts as well as recorded music.

"We bring to life some of the music that many people may not have known was part of the historical chronology of Latino music over the last seven decades," said Salvador Güereña, director of CEMA. "It's important for younger people to know the impact it had on music across the spectrum."

Vintage recordings were brought back to life for the exhibition –– which also includes interpretive texts, photos, artifacts, and historical documents –– and Güereña included the telephone component because he wanted "Sounds Latino!" to appeal to young people and engage them through the music. Over 40 music selections can be accessed by telephone, including pieces by Lalo Guerrero, whose archives are housed at UCSB; Tito Puente; Perez Prado; Adelina García; Ritchie Valens; Don Tosti; and the Chicano punk rock group The Brat.

"Not everyone has an iPod or an iPhone, but pretty much everyone has a cell phone," he said. "Also, Latino music lovers aren't limited by the four walls of the exhibition room. They can pick up a phone anywhere and at any time call in for a bolero or mambo or boogie and listen to their heart's content."

More information about the exhibition, including directions for accessing the recordings, is available at http://cemaweb.library.ucsb.edu/cema_exh_present.html"

Today, there is a lot of news about the border wall (lol). I am continually amazed at some of the stories I find and today is no exception. Help wanted ads for hitmen in Mexico, riots at immigration detention centers and $20 million virtual border wall prototype down the tubes. Maybe they should give some of that money to the Georgia sheriff who is wants money for detaining illegal immigrants. All this and more below.

I received some great responses to the redesign but I want to share this one: "For fifteen years I've been cluttering up my bookmarks with relevant sites covering Hispanic news and trying the "customize your news" features on various portals to try to get it to come to me -- all with frustrating results. Your Hispanic Tips is the incredibly valuable gift I've yearned for all these years. Congratulations on finding yet more ways to improve it!"

Gracias, Tomás

"A three-day conference honoring the late Guillermo Hernández, a professor of Spanish and Portuguese at UCLA and a leading scholar of Mexican narrative ballads, will take place at the University of California, Santa Barbara in May. "The Sixth International Corrido ( Mexican Narrative Ballad ) Conference" will also celebrate the work and memory of composer and vocalist Lalo Guerrero.

The conference begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, in the McCune Conference Room, 6020 Humanities and Social Sciences Building, and continues at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 9, in UCSB's MultiCultural Center. Free and open to the public, the conference includes panel discussions and a special reception at UCSB, a corrido contest and dance at Casa de la Raza in Santa Barbara, and a daylong festival at Chase Palm Park.

Conference participants include scholars from the United States, Mexico, and Siberia who will explore corridos as a musical composition form that traces its origins to Spanish romance and became popular during the Mexican Revolution. Among the presentations –– some conducted in English and others in Spanish –– is a keynote address by John McDowell, chair of the Folklore Institute at Indiana University. In addition, Salvador Güereña, director of UCSB's California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives ( CEMA ) will give a presentation on the "Sounds Latino!" exhibit currently on view at UCSB's Davidson Library. The exhibit recognizes some of the legendary music makers whose collections were established in CEMA.

The conference is co-sponsored by UCSB's Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor; Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Academic Policy; Office of Equal Opportunity; Chicano Studies Institute; Chicana and Chicano studies department; Latin American and Iberian studies program; UCSB libraries; Luis Leal Endowed Chair; and MultiCultural Center. Other sponsors include Casa de la Raza, The Arhoolie Foundation; Radio Bronco; La Preciosa; and Telemundo.

"MINISTER BORN IN HONDURAS discusses the need for churches — in the United States and Latin America — to reach out to multiple cultures.

Berto Murillo is an affable, gregarious, effective minister of the gospel. Born in Petoa, Santa Barbara, Honduras, the 53-year-old Murillo studied agricultural engineering at the University of Honduras, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1977.

For the next eight years, he worked as an agricultural extension agent. Because of his outstanding work, the Honduran government gave him an award that entitled him to select any university in the world for further study. He chose Cameron University in Lawton, Okla., to pursue additional studies in agriculture. "

"Maybe Gertrude Stein’s rose is a rose is a rose, but in this town you need to be more specific. Do you mean the Rose Café on Haley Street or the Rose Café on Cliff Drive? Newcomers may not even appreciate the diff, or even why so many of us have spent so many hours in either (or both) of these roseate places. For the uninitiated: Sometimes it’s just about satisfying a deep craving for old-school Mexican food with substantial emphasis on the carbohydrate joy of delicious rice, creamy beans, and fresh tortillas — not to mention untempered salsas, meats, and cheeses. Other times, however, the Roses serve as vivid reinforcements of what living in Santa Barbara implies: a small town with nicely varied cultural heritage, familiar with spice. (Haley, by the way, has the bad-boy chilaquiles; the Mesa’s got chicken tacos.)

More sophisticated variations apply to the war of the Roses: Take the comparative environments. For your basic Edward Hopper moment, I suggest a foggy late night at the Haley Street Rose with the counter’s often-solitary diners bent over hot plates, their shadows like ghosts sprawled over the linoleum. Philip Marlowe might wander in; the place seems to echo an earlier, more knockabout era. Unsurprisingly, until the 1980s the Eastside eatery was open from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. and sometimes (secretly) well beyond those hours, I’ve heard from remarkably good sources."

"Race and gender are key factors in determining the distribution of power in government, according to the study presented this week by a team of researchers including UCSB professor of Political Science Pei-te Lien. The team created a database of over 10,000 elected officials of color at federal, state, and local levels. Using this database, they conducted phone surveys with 1,354 African-American, Asian-American, Latino, and American Indian officials on various policy topics ranging from the war in Iraq to education to abortion in an effort to gain a more focused understanding of our elected leadership. In addition to key issues, the group also analyzed personal background and the roles of those polled to create an unprecedented study of multiculturalism and gender in U.S. politics."

"Eduardo Verástegui, the eclectic Mexican star, has great talent as a producer and actor, and great passion to succeed and direct. In 2006, his film “Bella” won the ‘People’s Choice Award’ at the Toronto Film Festival, often an indicator of future Oscar winners such as: Life is Beautiful, American Beauty, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon y Hotel Rwanda.

Now “Bella” premiers on October 26 in the United States, predicting that thanks to this touching and revealing production, the Hollywood industry will take a well-deserved turn, especially for Latinos.

“Bella”, written and directed by the Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Monteverde, produced by Metanoia Films and distributed by Liongate and Roadside Attractions, touches with unusual sensitivity the universal subject of love, friendship, family, and the challenges in the face of adversity. It is a love story that transcends romanticism, and as such “Bella” has touched the heart of the public in festivals, receiving many awards.

In the last few months, the Metanoia Films team has received awards across the United States and Mexico. The Smithsonian Latino Center honored Eduardo Verastegui (actor/producer) and Alejandro Monteverde (writer/director) with the prestigious “Legacy Award” for their contributions with “Bella” to the arts, to the image of Hispanics in the United States and for their positive message. The film took its producers to the White House, where President George Bush presented the “Outstanding American for Choice” award to director and writer Alejandro Monteverde as an initiative to recognize the contributions that naturalized immigrants have made to their communities and to this country.

After facing great challenges to study cinematography in this country, and confronted with economic and language barriers, Monteverde obtained his legal residency and recently his American citizenship. From hiding inside a mailroom at the University of Texas to be able to sleep (with an empty stomach), he became a guest of honor at the White House, and the pride of Latinos.

“Bella”, financed and produced by the entrepreneur Sean Wolfington was selected among thousands of films for the opening at the LA Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) in 2006. The film was also selected to open the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), and was the official selection at the Dallas, San Diego, Morelia, Huatulco, Santa Barbara, Austin Film Festivals. On May 5, the Mexican Embassy in Washington D.C. selected it as the winner of “Crystal Heart Award” in the Heartland Film Festival, among others.

Eduardo Verástegui said that “Bella” had the power to change lives, just as it changed his. “I needed to give 100% of myself to my beliefs and to produce a film that gave dignity to Latinos all over the World, to act and to tell stories that made a difference in our society”. “And that conviction resulted in ‘Bella’.”

The film rated PG, and starring Hispanic and American actors such as Angélica Aragón, Manny Pérez, Ali Landry y Tammy Blanchard, will be shown at the VIP Red Carpet Reception in the city of Miami, sponsored in part by Goya and Bacardi. Celebrities of the arts, film, press, TV and politics, have confirmed their presence to the event on Tuesday October 23, at the Gusman Center.

“Bella” premiers nationally on October 26 in the United States, bringing hope to new generations to appreciate a great film, with a positive, fresh message, that celebrates not only Hispanic values but the values of all human beings.

"Azteca America, the fastest-growing Hispanic television network in the United States, is proud to announce the launch of "Issues: Caras y Voces," a political forum hosted by veteran Latino journalist Armando Guzman. The weekly forum will begin airing October 1 and continue every Monday during the national newscast of Noticiero Azteca America at 6:30 pm EST and PST/ 5:30 pm CST and 11:00 pm EST and PST / 10:00 pm CST. The forum will also be transmitted on broadcast television in Mexico through Proyecto 40.

The broadcast premiere will feature Governor Bill Richardson, the first Latino Democratic presidential candidate with real possibilities of being part of the Democratic ticket in 2008. His public service history includes US Congressman, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Secretary of Energy and currently Governor of New Mexico.

"The birth of this forum is the result of a dialog with bipartisan members of Congress, who expressed the need for our Latino communities to have issues in Washington communicated in simple, straightforward language through a broadcast television network in both the United States and Mexico," said Luis J. Echarte, Chairman of Azteca America.

The focus of the segment is the projection and analysis of top leaders that impact the Hispanic community through one-on-one interviews, which will be conducted by Armando Guzman. Covering the White House and the Capitol for almost two decades, Mr. Guzman is one of the most veteran and respected correspondents in Washington.

During ten years as senior anchor and producer of the weekly political news program "Temas y Debates," Mr. Guzman interviewed numerous heads of state and U.S. political figures. He has interviewed the last four U.S. presidents and vice presidents, as well as world figures such as Mikhail Gorbachev, Boris Yeltsin, Lech Walesa, Nelson Mandela, Yasser Arafat, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and countless Latin American presidents.

As a war correspondent, he was the first Latino journalist to ever broadcast from the USS Air Carrier Theodore Roosevelt during the 2001 U.S. invasion of Afghanistan.

He has been recognized by numerous organizations for his journalistic contributions, including the Edward R. Murrow award in 1996 and the "Premio Nacional de Periodismo," Mexico's National Journalism Award, for his coverage of the September 11 attacks in 2001.

Mr. Guzman will also be moderating an immigration forum as part of the activities of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute on October 2. The Plenary Session is titled "Achieving Comprehensive Immigration Reform: Where Do We Go From Here?" and will include participation by Congressman Luis Gutierrez.

"Hispanic Business magazine has named Western University of Health Sciences' College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) in Pomona, Calif., as the best medical school for Hispanics in Southern California.

COMP ranks 18th on the list and joins Stanford University as the only California schools in the top 20, according to Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Hispanic Business magazine's national survey published in its September issue.

COMP's program currently has 35 Hispanic students out of a total of 829 students, or 4.2 percent. University-wide, WesternU has 154 Hispanic students out of a total of 2,291, or 6.7 percent.

The Top 20 Best Medical Schools for Hispanics survey ranking is based on a point system for enrollment, faculty, student services, retention rate and reputation.

"COMP's mission is to graduate caring, compassionate, lifelong learners with the distinctive osteopathic philosophy and return them to the community within which we live and serve," said COMP Dean Clinton Adams, DO, FAAFP, FACHE. "The overwhelming focus of that effort is Southern California. We cannot achieve that mission if we do not reflect its cultural characteristics."

WesternU received a solid score all around, from the retention rate of Hispanic students to a good enrollment number and a good faculty score, said Michael Caplinger, research supervisor for Hispanic Business magazine. Put together, the school has a well-rounded program for its Hispanic students, he said.

"The goal of our school rankings is to provide our readers with a basis to begin their search for a graduate school that will be suitable for their needs," Caplinger said. "Schools such as Western that provide services and programs geared towards Hispanics deserve the recognition that goes with their efforts."

About Western University of Health Sciences

Western University of Health Sciences (www.westernu.edu), located in Pomona, Calif., is an independent nonprofit health professions university, conferring degrees in nursing, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies and veterinary medicine. In 2009, the university will admit students to new degree programs in dentistry, optometry, podiatry and graduate studies."
