SVREP Targets 124 Communities for Nonpartisan Voter Registration

Tags: , , , , ,

To All Latino Community Leaders:

After registering more than 25,000 voters in warm-up activities over the last period, it is time for SVREP to ramp up massive community mobilization. We invite all forces in the Latino community (and its allies) to unite and organize nonpartisan voter registration drives that mobilize the Latino vote in the fall elections.

In ten days, organizations and elected officials from 36 states and 13 countries will gather at the 3 rd Annual National Latino Congreso (www.latinocongreso.org) in Los Angeles on July 18-20. At the Congreso, they will launch “Movimiento 10-12” to help raise Latino registration to 12 million, and drive 10 million voters to the polls in November. A successful mobilization will send a powerful message in favor of justice for immigrants, federal action to reactivate the economy, fixing our broken educational system, extending health care to all, and ending the war in Iraq (the top five Latino issues).

SVREP (www.svrep.org) has joined together with LULAC, Hispanic Federation, NALACC, LCLAA, HMLA, MAPA, and hundreds of local organizations and elected officials to launch a coordinated national nonpartisan campaign in more than 20 states to register and turnout 250,000 new voters during summer and fall.

All “Congreso” attendees, as well as all others willing to unite, are invited to join this nonpartisan effort. Below is list of SVREP targeted counties, in which SVREP will provide training, financing, data, media support, materials, and other technical support to community-based coalitions that pledge to mobilize their memberships and volunteers to do neighborhood-based voter registration (and turnout) during August-November. SVREP will invest $3 million towards its portion of the goals (registering and turning out 150,000 voters).

If you are interested in joining this effort, nominating candidates for paid voter registration coordinator positions, want to launch a local coalition, or otherwise help please attend the Latino Congreso (www.latinocongreso.org) or contact us one of our field representatives:

Luis Alberto Urrea to Speak at Santa Barbara Writers Conference

“There was a lot that made you love San Diego in the early ’90s. And then there were Luis Alberto Urrea’s essays in the Reader. His gritty accounts of border life offered a shock-and-awe contrast to the idyllic existence north of the border. In his descriptions of the dumps, orphanages, and police precincts of Tijuana, Urrea revealed the harsh reality that resided right on our doorstep even before border books came into vogue. He has since gone on to publish his expressive voice in all literary forms. His last two books — The Devil’s Highway, a real-life account of a border crossing, and the mystically intoxicating novel, The Hummingbird’s Daughter — have secured his place among the finest contemporary writers in the nation.”*

“On June 14, 2008, before launching the second photo shoot with Maite Perroni, NYX is hosting an autograph-signing event where fans can meet Maite and take home a personalized picture and beauty goodies. There will be free makeovers, snacks and drinks, raffles, goodies, music, and media coverage. To participate, press badges must be obtained before the event. All interested co-sponsors and media coverage for this event are welcome.

NYX officially announced Maite Perroni as their spokes model at their launch party in Mexico City on September 27, 2007. The first photo shoot was in July 2007, in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, California, which spanned across three days. Since the union, NYX and Maite have received abundant accolades, support from fans and customers, and have built a larger following by uniting them.

About NYX: Founded in 1999 by Ms. Toni Ko and headquartered in Los Angeles, CA, the primary goal was to provide professional quality cosmetics at discount store prices. Its products are characterized as ultramodern and are directed for the public, with emphasis on makeup artists and adventurous makeup aficionados with their wide range of bold colors that never discontinue. As for the name, NYX stands for the Greek goddess of night comparing her by way of metaphor to the young ‘goddesses’ that show sophistication and boldness in the modern-day night scene. NYX products are marketed in more than thirty countries, covering five continents, and are selling in stores such as Ultra, Longs, Rite Aid, independent salons, and bricks-and-mortars across the globe.

About Maite Perroni: She won our hearts in her debut as “Lupita” in the hit Spanish youth series “Rebelde” and left us with a special message that anything is possible. She was born on March 9, 1983 in Mexico City D.F. At only eleven months old, she and her family moved to Guadalajara. An accomplished singer, actress and songwriter, Maite gained popularity as an actress playing Lupita and as a singer being a member of the Latin phenomenon group RBD, in which she is said to be the “mother” of the group. She studied in Mexico’s Center of Artistic Education for two years where she discovered her passion for acting. Maite is involved in various charities and enjoys volunteering her time for those in need. Maite’s love for dance led to a campaign with sport giant Nike that promoted the importance of dance. Receiving a great amount of support from the Hispanic population in the US, NYX strengthened the bond by enlisting Maite as their spokes model and hiring advertising specialists Patricia and Tony Gracia of Power Media Group, Inc. to oversee their campaign focusing on the Hispanic market.

“Sounds Latino!” Exhibition at UCSB Accessible Via Telephone

Tags: , , , , ,

“An innovative exhibition that traces the genesis and evolution of Chicano and Latino music over the past 70 years is currently on view at the University of California, Santa Barbara and is accessible via telephone. “Sounds Latino!” continues through June 30 and highlights renowned singers and groups whose papers and other collections are represented in the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives ( CEMA ) located in UCSB’s Davidson Library.

The bolero, mambo, corrido, swing, boogie, Tex-Mex, and even punk rock are woven into the fabric of Latino cultural heritage, and the multidisciplinary exhibition engages visitors through the visual and theater arts as well as recorded music.

“We bring to life some of the music that many people may not have known was part of the historical chronology of Latino music over the last seven decades,” said Salvador Güereña, director of CEMA. “It’s important for younger people to know the impact it had on music across the spectrum.”

Vintage recordings were brought back to life for the exhibition –– which also includes interpretive texts, photos, artifacts, and historical documents –– and Güereña included the telephone component because he wanted “Sounds Latino!” to appeal to young people and engage them through the music. Over 40 music selections can be accessed by telephone, including pieces by Lalo Guerrero, whose archives are housed at UCSB; Tito Puente; Perez Prado; Adelina García; Ritchie Valens; Don Tosti; and the Chicano punk rock group The Brat.

“Not everyone has an iPod or an iPhone, but pretty much everyone has a cell phone,” he said. “Also, Latino music lovers aren’t limited by the four walls of the exhibition room. They can pick up a phone anywhere and at any time call in for a bolero or mambo or boogie and listen to their heart’s content.”

More information about the exhibition, including directions for accessing the recordings, is available at cemaweb.library.ucsb.edu/cema_exh_present.html”*

COOL - Use your cell phone and enter phone number (805) 357-4694, wait for prompt, and then enter selection number followed by the pound sign. These are mainly vintage recordings transferred from original disks, including hisses and pops. Go to this page to see what you can listen to.

The Christian Chronicle » A Conversation with Berto Murillo

“MINISTER BORN IN HONDURAS discusses the need for churches — in the United States and Latin America — to reach out to multiple cultures.

Berto Murillo is an affable, gregarious, effective minister of the gospel. Born in Petoa, Santa Barbara, Honduras, the 53-year-old Murillo studied agricultural engineering at the University of Honduras, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1977.

For the next eight years, he worked as an agricultural extension agent. Because of his outstanding work, the Honduran government gave him an award that entitled him to select any university in the world for further study. He chose Cameron University in Lawton, Okla., to pursue additional studies in agriculture. “*

Agnes Guevara’s Living Legacy of Mexican Cuisine

“Maybe Gertrude Stein’s rose is a rose is a rose, but in this town you need to be more specific. Do you mean the Rose Café on Haley Street or the Rose Café on Cliff Drive? Newcomers may not even appreciate the diff, or even why so many of us have spent so many hours in either (or both) of these roseate places. For the uninitiated: Sometimes it’s just about satisfying a deep craving for old-school Mexican food with substantial emphasis on the carbohydrate joy of delicious rice, creamy beans, and fresh tortillas — not to mention untempered salsas, meats, and cheeses. Other times, however, the Roses serve as vivid reinforcements of what living in Santa Barbara implies: a small town with nicely varied cultural heritage, familiar with spice. (Haley, by the way, has the bad-boy chilaquiles; the Mesa’s got chicken tacos.)

More sophisticated variations apply to the war of the Roses: Take the comparative environments. For your basic Edward Hopper moment, I suggest a foggy late night at the Haley Street Rose with the counter’s often-solitary diners bent over hot plates, their shadows like ghosts sprawled over the linoleum. Philip Marlowe might wander in; the place seems to echo an earlier, more knockabout era. Unsurprisingly, until the 1980s the Eastside eatery was open from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. and sometimes (secretly) well beyond those hours, I’ve heard from remarkably good sources.”*

University of California Santa Barbara Study Indicates Minorities Underrepresented in Government

“Race and gender are key factors in determining the distribution of power in government, according to the study presented this week by a team of researchers including UCSB professor of Political Science Pei-te Lien. The team created a database of over 10,000 elected officials of color at federal, state, and local levels. Using this database, they conducted phone surveys with 1,354 African-American, Asian-American, Latino, and American Indian officials on various policy topics ranging from the war in Iraq to education to abortion in an effort to gain a more focused understanding of our elected leadership. In addition to key issues, the group also analyzed personal background and the roles of those polled to create an unprecedented study of multiculturalism and gender in U.S. politics.”*

Eduardo Verástegui Shines with ‘Bella’

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

“Eduardo Verástegui, the eclectic Mexican star, has great talent as a producer and actor, and great passion to succeed and direct. In 2006, his film “Bella” won the ‘People’s Choice Award’ at the Toronto Film Festival, often an indicator of future Oscar winners such as: Life is Beautiful, American Beauty, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon y Hotel Rwanda.

Now “Bella” premiers on October 26 in the United States, predicting that thanks to this touching and revealing production, the Hollywood industry will take a well-deserved turn, especially for Latinos.

“Bella”, written and directed by the Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Monteverde, produced by Metanoia Films and distributed by Liongate and Roadside Attractions, touches with unusual sensitivity the universal subject of love, friendship, family, and the challenges in the face of adversity. It is a love story that transcends romanticism, and as such “Bella” has touched the heart of the public in festivals, receiving many awards.

In the last few months, the Metanoia Films team has received awards across the United States and Mexico. The Smithsonian Latino Center honored Eduardo Verastegui (actor/producer) and Alejandro Monteverde (writer/director) with the prestigious “Legacy Award” for their contributions with “Bella” to the arts, to the image of Hispanics in the United States and for their positive message. The film took its producers to the White House, where President George Bush presented the “Outstanding American for Choice” award to director and writer Alejandro Monteverde as an initiative to recognize the contributions that naturalized immigrants have made to their communities and to this country.

After facing great challenges to study cinematography in this country, and confronted with economic and language barriers, Monteverde obtained his legal residency and recently his American citizenship. From hiding inside a mailroom at the University of Texas to be able to sleep (with an empty stomach), he became a guest of honor at the White House, and the pride of Latinos.

“Bella”, financed and produced by the entrepreneur Sean Wolfington was selected among thousands of films for the opening at the LA Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) in 2006. The film was also selected to open the Miami International Film Festival (MIFF), and was the official selection at the Dallas, San Diego, Morelia, Huatulco, Santa Barbara, Austin Film Festivals. On May 5, the Mexican Embassy in Washington D.C. selected it as the winner of “Crystal Heart Award” in the Heartland Film Festival, among others.

Eduardo Verástegui said that “Bella” had the power to change lives, just as it changed his. “I needed to give 100% of myself to my beliefs and to produce a film that gave dignity to Latinos all over the World, to act and to tell stories that made a difference in our society”. “And that conviction resulted in ‘Bella’.”

The film rated PG, and starring Hispanic and American actors such as Angélica Aragón, Manny Pérez, Ali Landry y Tammy Blanchard, will be shown at the VIP Red Carpet Reception in the city of Miami, sponsored in part by Goya and Bacardi. Celebrities of the arts, film, press, TV and politics, have confirmed their presence to the event on Tuesday October 23, at the Gusman Center.

“Bella” premiers nationally on October 26 in the United States, bringing hope to new generations to appreciate a great film, with a positive, fresh message, that celebrates not only Hispanic values but the values of all human beings.

“Hispanic Business magazine has named Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) in Pomona, Calif., as the best medical school for Hispanics in Southern California.

COMP ranks 18th on the list and joins Stanford University as the only California schools in the top 20, according to Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Hispanic Business magazine’s national survey published in its September issue.

COMP’s program currently has 35 Hispanic students out of a total of 829 students, or 4.2 percent. University-wide, WesternU has 154 Hispanic students out of a total of 2,291, or 6.7 percent.

The Top 20 Best Medical Schools for Hispanics survey ranking is based on a point system for enrollment, faculty, student services, retention rate and reputation.

“COMP’s mission is to graduate caring, compassionate, lifelong learners with the distinctive osteopathic philosophy and return them to the community within which we live and serve,” said COMP Dean Clinton Adams, DO, FAAFP, FACHE. “The overwhelming focus of that effort is Southern California. We cannot achieve that mission if we do not reflect its cultural characteristics.”

WesternU received a solid score all around, from the retention rate of Hispanic students to a good enrollment number and a good faculty score, said Michael Caplinger, research supervisor for Hispanic Business magazine. Put together, the school has a well-rounded program for its Hispanic students, he said.

“The goal of our school rankings is to provide our readers with a basis to begin their search for a graduate school that will be suitable for their needs,” Caplinger said. “Schools such as Western that provide services and programs geared towards Hispanics deserve the recognition that goes with their efforts.”

“To meet the need of the Spanish-speaking soccer coaches working with under 18-players, the LA84 Foundation is making available on its website two free coaching manuals in Spanish.

Fuerzas Basicas was authored by Efrain Flores and Joe Supe. Flores has vast experience in developing training programs that have taken young Mexican players to the elite level in soccer. Among Flores’ protégés are Rafael Márquez, Carlos Vela and Patricio Araujo.

Fuerzas Basicas was made possible through a grant from the LA84 Foundation to the Southern California Youth Soccer Organization. Many coaches contributed to Manual de entrenamiento de fÚtbol, including Sigi Schmidt, former UCLA and LA Galaxy head coach and now the head coach with the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer. This manual originally was published in English. The manuals are available for free download on the LA84 Foundation website at http://www.la84foundation.org/3ce/CoachingManuals/LA84soccer.pdf

“Investing in the education of coaches is crucial to ensure that youngsters are properly taught the skills and ethics of the sport,” said Patrick Escobar, Vice President, Grants and Programs, LA84 Foundation. “In a diverse community such as Los Angeles, it is imperative that coaches have access to these training materials in Spanish.”

Michigan State University offers Midwest’s first Ph.D. in Chicano/Latino Studies

“Michigan State University has launched the first doctoral program in Chicano/Latino Studies in the Midwest – and only the second in the nation.

The interdisciplinary graduate degree, which grew out of MSU’s undergraduate Chicano/Latino Studies program, is offered by the College of Social Science. Like many doctoral programs, it is starting small; five students are enrolled for the 2007-08 academic year.

Dionicio Valdes, program director and MSU professor of history, said the Chicano/Latino population is simultaneously the fastest-growing and least-studied major ethnic group in the United States. Hispanics are also the largest minority group at nearly 43 million people.

“This program is important for many reasons,” Valdes said. “But the biggest single reason is that it offers a much different approach to knowledge and an understanding of our increasingly complex society that academia has not yet come to terms with.”

Doctoral candidates will explore the historical and contemporary experiences of Chicanos and Latinos in social, cultural, political and economic contexts. Doctorate courses range from “Latina Feminisms” to “Globalization and Mexican Immigration to the United States.”

The University of California, Santa Barbara, offers the only other doctorate focusing specifically on Chicano studies.

Valdes said Michigan State’s relatively large number of Hispanic students and reputation for Chicano/Latino scholarship make the new doctoral program a logical fit. According to the provost’s office, 1,309 students are enrolled at MSU this fall – a 34 percent increase over 1997.

MSU also has the Cesar E. Chavez Collection, one of the nation’s largest library holdings representing the life and philosophy of the late civil rights activist and the Chicano/Latino community.

In addition, the Julian Samora Research Institute is located on campus. The institute, named after the former MSU professor and pioneer in Mexican-American studies, conducts research and projects targeting the needs of the Hispanic community in the areas of economic development, education, families and neighborhoods.

Rubén Martinez, who became the institute’s director on Sept. 1, said a deeper understanding of Chicano and Latino groups “will contribute to the betterment of the nation as a whole as it moves forward into the 21st century.”

“Previous scholarship has argued that the flow of Mexican and Latino immigrants into cities and states has coincided with their development and prosperity – both the people and the economies have benefitted,” Martinez said. “We see this in many communities in the South today, even though local institutions struggle to meet the educational and health needs of their newest community members.

“The scholarly work of doctoral students in the new program,” he added, “will enhance our understanding of these dynamics and ultimately contribute to the betterment of intergroup relations in this country.”

Rita was a fighter, and she became an ardent advocate for the Mexican-American community. City Councilmembers knew Rita for her pithy remarks, spoken with a passion and directness that was hard to ignore.”

“The last man out of the World Trade Center will share his harrowing story of courage, strength and hope on Friday, August 17th at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles. Actor Ed Asner along with Peace Mom Cindy Sheehan are scheduled to appear.

Los Angeles, CA PRWEB July 31, 2007 — Declared a hero for saving numerous lives at Ground Zero, William Rodriguez was the janitor on duty the morning of 9/11 who heard and felt explosions rock the basement sub-levels of the north tower just seconds before the jetliner struck the top floors. His testimony, which was omitted from the 9/11 Commission, destroys the governments official story because it means there is a possibility explosives were placed in the buildings. Several eyewitnesses also claim they heard multiple explosions before the buildings collapsed.

At great risk to his own life, William re-entered the Towers three times after the first, North Tower impact and is believed to be the last person to exit the North Tower alive, surviving the buildings collapse by diving beneath a fire truck. After receiving medical attention at the site for his injuries, he then spent the rest of the day a volunteer in the rescue efforts, and at dawn the following morning, was back continuing his heroic efforts.

In addition to being a spokesperson for the New York City first responders leading the cause for compensation issues and rights William is also active in the movement for immigrant rights. When Latino survivors and relatives of victims of the attacks were not receiving adequate attention from support groups or relief programs, he helped form a group just for them. He was also a major force behind the campaign to encourage non-documented survivors and relatives of victims to come forward for help without fear of deportation. The group raised funds for scholarships for children of immigrants killed or maimed in the attacks.

William believes that now is the time for all people to stand up for truth, even if it means personal sacrifice. In addition to testifying in front of the 9/11 Commission, he is also the lead plaintiff in a federal RICO lawsuit filed against President Bush and others, alleging conspiracy to commit murder and other crimes in the deaths of more than 3,000 people at the WTC.

William Rodriguez tells his story live Friday August 17, 2007 at the Immanuel Presbyterian Church located at 3300 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles. The program begins at 7pm and there will be a donation request of $10. To view the trailer from Williams new film The Last Man Out visit http://youtube.com/watch?v=0DEUzuzqSLQ

Azteca America Scores Big With Live Mexican Soccer Final

“Azteca America was the number-one choice among Hispanic networks for men ages 18-49 with its exclusive live transmission of the Mexican Soccer League championship final game. The program, which featured Pachuca vs. America, attracted a record audience of 1.9 million viewers on May 27, once again proving that Mexican League Soccer is the premier sports vehicle for attracting Hispanic audiences.

“Pachuca made history as champions of the current Mexican Soccer League season, while Azteca America hits its own milestone of 1.9 million viewers,” said Adrian Steckel, CEO of Azteca America.

According to Nielsen’s National Television Index, the transmission also beat out ABC, NBC and CW for men ages 18-49, and brought in superior audiences to CBS, ABC CW and NBC for men ages 18-34. Among Hispanic networks, the game beat out Univision, and attracted more than three times the audiences of Telemundo and Telefutura, respectively, for males ages 18-34.

Extending the Azteca America platform to new media, the game also generated 100,000 premium SMS messages for a related trivia contest. The game was transmitted live to mobile subscribers on the MobiTV service, and was one of the most successful live sports programs in recent history.

“Soccer is the world sport, and number one with Hispanic viewers,” added Mr. Steckel. “And no soccer buy is complete without Azteca America, where we broadcast almost half of the entire league games.”
