“norteño icons Los Tigres del Norte [are] the most influential regional Mexican group in the United States… Los Tigres are not just another popular musical act… Instead, they’re widely viewed as the voice of the people, capable of making you dance to a cumbia one instant, [or] weep the next with a woeful immigrant’s tale” –Billboard

U.S. slowdown squeezes Mexico’s migrant worker bounty

“The mountain of cash sent home by Mexicans in the United States is shrinking for the first time in over a decade, putting the dampers on Mexico’s economy as a U.S. slowdown takes work away from immigrants.

In rural towns like Tonatico, in central Mexico, where about half the men are in the United States, rodeos and country dances are being canceled and restaurants, which play U.S. hip hop music brought home by returning sons, are languishing. “*

LATINA ACTRESS EILEEN GALINDO MAKES THEATRE DIRECTORIAL DEBUT IN “TRAILERVILLE”

Filed under [ Entertainment ] [ Latinas ] [ Press Releases ] [ Blogante Entertainment ] [ California ] [ Los Angeles ]
Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Actress Eileen Galindo is jumping on the other side of the stage, behind the spotlight, to wear a new hat as first time theatrical director.
She will world premiere “Trailerville”, the unique play written by Hannah Logan and produced by Jennifer Cetrone founder of From The Ground Up Theatre Company.

“Trailerville” takes place in the early 1970’s and explores the lives of the residents of the fictional Lakeview Mobile Home Park in the Southern community of DeSales County. It is an, at times hilarious, and often moving, exploration of faith, acceptance, love and triumph that asks the question - Does where we come from make us who we are and, perhaps more importantly, does God live in a trailer?

But perhaps it is the behind the scene story of how “Trailerville” came to be that equally deserves the focus and most certainly, a closer look at. One word can then summarize it all: SERENDIPITY, and one name brings it all together: EILEEN GALINDO.

Eileen is not just anybody. She is someone absolutely worth knowing, and someone everyone wants to know! She’s been called the Oprah Winfrey of her own social circles for her exponentially growing entourage - sort of a “six degree of Galindo” phenomenon. And “Trailerville” is yet another perfect illustration of Eileen’s Midas touch. “I wanted to start directing, maybe readings for some of the theatre companies I had been working for, when Jennifer Cetrone, told me she was looking for a director for her company’s next production”, explains Galindo.
“I said I could probably put her in contact with someone. She then asked who would be crazy enough to want to direct for free. - I said that if someone asked me I’d do it. And that’s how it came about”, Eileen proceeds to say while nonchalantly drifting a smile.

The original plan was to do a published piece. But as the company was going through a transition, it became the perfect opportunity to try launching a world premiere. Galindo had been working in a writer’s group with short story writer, Hannah Logan, on the original Trailerville stories and instantly knew they could be adapted into a play.

“Trailerville” is an ensemble cast with a total of 30 actors altogether part of a double cast - there are no under studies and no specific leads/principals.
Another unique aspect of the play is that the production company is one of the only “bi-coastal” theatre companies in the country, as artistic Director/founder, Jennifer Cetrone opened an east coast chapter of From The Ground Up Theatre Company in March of this year.

Taking on the role of director was certainly not a big stretch for Galindo whose real lifestory is nothing short of “taking charge” episodes. She is one of those rare talents who remains strongly involved on a political level to affect the entertainment industry with regards to minorities and has most definitely become a voice to be reckoned with.

She found herself on the pages of the LA Times not just for an acting review but for her charitable endeavors following the Katrina disaster. Owner of a 5-unit building in Hollywood, California, Eileen generously housed a young couple with their newborn (Katrina evacuees) for three months rent free. She sent out a mass e-mail asking for donations of blankets, food, clothes, etc… and somehow found herself mentioned on Hollywood’s members-only, highly prestigious, elite internet newsletter dubbed “The List”. The outcome was car loads of prêt-a-porter designer brands from the finest boutiques on Rodeo Drive and Robertson Blvd, snazzy furniture, gift cards and boxes of gourmet delicacies.

On the political front, she served as a board member of the Screen Actor’s Guild for three years. At only twenty one years of age, Eileen became instrumental in the non-traditional casting movement that gained momentum in the 1990s, putting herself on the picket lines to encourage Broadway producers to endorse diversity in casting.
As a result, today Broadway is certainly more integrated.

Now Eileen is rightfully reaping the seeds of a well deserved success.
She secured one of the lead starring roles in a series of webisodes called “In the Motherhood”, opposite Leah Remini [”King of Queens”], Chelsea Handler [”Girls Behaving Badly”] and Lainie Kazan; wrapped production in the critically acclaimed theater play Zoot Suit “Romeo &Juliet” adapted and directed by Tony Plana, opposite Ana Ortiz (”Ugly Betty”), and Mauricio Mendoza (”Resurrection Blvd”); and joined the cast of NBC’s “Days of our Lives”, in the role of the nefarious “Beverly Healy”; and secured a voice-over appearance opposite Caroline Rhea and Mitchel Musso in “Phineas and Ferb” the new Disney Channel animated comedy by the creators of “Hey Arnold” and “Sponge Bob Square Pants”.

“Trailerville” opens on June 13 at the legendary Moving Arts Theater in the trendy Los Feliz area in Los Angeles, and runs until July 27 for six consecutive weeks.

Rough Events at Mexican Rodeos in U.S. Criticized

“But now the charreada, which is strictly amateur, is facing its biggest challenge. After criticism from animal rights and anti-rodeo activists, eight states over the last decade have cracked down on several events, most notably horse tripping, a centuries-old tradition that involves roping and snaring the front legs of a running mare and that can cause serious injury. As a result, no charros in the federation practice horse tripping.

In a law that takes effect next month, Nebraska is also banning steer tailing, in which a charro grabs a steer’s tail, wraps it beneath his stirrup and flips the animal to the ground. The legislation grew out of abuses uncovered by the Omaha Humane Society at an unsanctioned arena, in which some horses had rope burns and torn tendons and were severely emaciated.”*

No bull: Mexican rodeo offers thrills

“Loud, lively music, an energetic crowd and 14 daring bull riders could be heard across the fairgrounds Saturday night. It was the Colusa County Fair’s second year presenting the Fiesta Mexicana Jaripeo Ranchero and American Rodeo.

“The rodeo is a universal language, you don’t have to understand it to enjoy it, it’s just good entertainment,” said Rick Wilmoth, volunteer captain of the Colusa Fire Department, which was on standby in case any riders were injured.

The more than five-hour event drew a large crowd, almost filling the grandstands. The jineto de torro – bull-riding – and jaripeo – horse show – were the main attractions.”*

At H&R Block ‘Estamos Contigo’ - New campaign targets Hispanic consumers with tailored ads

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

“H&R Block is looking for clients who speak Spanish - and Chicago-based advertising agency Lapiz is helping to bring them onboard through a new ad campaign that reinforces the tax company’s position as the expert and advocate for the Hispanic taxpayers.

Showcasing the company’s commitment to the Hispanic community under the tagline “Estamos Contigo” (we are with you), the campaign rolled out in early January and will run through early April across 13 markets including New York, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, Denver, El Paso, Fresno, Phoenix and Puerto Rico.

“Filing taxes can be stressful, and even more so for those born outside the United States who may not be familiar with this process,” said Sheila Dougherty, Senior Marketing Manager of Multicultural Marketing at H&R Block. “Lapiz’s understanding of our business needs is reflected on the ‘Estamos Contigo’ campaign, which is helping us reiterate to the Hispanic community that, at H&R Block, we have the resources and the expertise to serve and support them in their language of preference when it comes to taxes and other financial needs, all year-round.”

After being selected as H&R Block’s agency of record for the U.S. Hispanic market back in April 2007, Lapiz has worked closely with H&R Block to create an original and entertaining Hispanic advertisement campaign that aligned with the company’s general market “You Got People” campaign. The result is a distinct television, radio and OOH campaign featuring Horacio (H) and Roberto (R), two likeable Hispanic friends on a quest to bust the myths that Hispanics may have about H&R Block in a humorous, yet informative, approach.

“When creating the ad campaign, we kept in mind H&R Block’s stance as the leader in the tax industry and a partner for the Hispanic community. At the same time, we wanted to bring a fresh perspective to something as serious as taxes in order to connect with Latinos in a more personal and humorous light,” said Laurence Klinger, Chief Creative Officer at Lapiz.

Tailored to each market, the OOHs convey the company’s language capabilities and its reliable services. For instance, the Los Angeles OOH features Horacio and Roberto wearing black leather jackets and sunglasses, like Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Terminator”, with a quirky “Hasta La Vista, Taxes” slogan, while the Miami OOH showcases the pair sipping on Cuban coffee with the statement “Si Algo te Va a Quitar el Sueno, Que Sea el Cafe Cubano,” which roughly translates to “if you’re going to lose sleep, let it be over Cuban coffee.” In Dallas, Horacio and Roberto let taxpayers know that H&R Block will do their taxes “Sin Rodeos,” (”without the run around”), a clever play on words that honors the official sport in the state of Texas.

Witty television spots light-heartedly showcase the importance of having a qualified, Spanish speaking, bilingual tax professional who has received the latest training on all the recent tax law changes and can effectively guide the clients to file their returns. One of the spots follows Horacio and Roberto, along with two flamenco dancers, to an H&R Block office, where Horacio and Roberto will prove that the professionals at H&R Block do speak Spanish. The flamenco dancers belt out a tune in Spanish stating “can you help me with my taxes, please?” to which a tax professional responds (also singing) “but of course, have a seat.” Horacio and Roberto then add: “Proof that H&R Block does speak Spanish.”

In another spot, Horacio and Roberto visit a beauty salon and ask the stylist to assist in tax preparation. The stylist gladly accepts the documents and, after some time has passed, the camera flashes back to the stylist, who has converted the documents into paper-doll cut outs. Horacio and Roberto then state: “Proven, not just anyone can do your taxes.”

Lapiz’s advertising campaign reinforces H&R Block’s catered outreach to the Hispanic community. The company has Latino-focused offices nationwide, where taxpayers can find relevant products and services, all in their language of preference. Additional resources are also available through the company’s toll free number, 1-800 HR BLOCK as well as on the company’s Spanish site, www.hrblock.com/espanol

Some protest rodeo’s Go Tejano Day, but show thrives - Houston

“Protesters rallied near the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo today, voicing discontent over what they say is under-representation of Hispanics at the event.

The group, VIVE Tejano-Houston, three weeks ago urged would-be rodeo visitors to stay away this year, and stepped up the boycott today because it marks the show’s annual Go Tejano Day, a celebration of Hispanic heritage. More than 100 protesters in bright yellow shirts lined Kirby near Loop 610, next to one of the show’s main entrances.”*

A record 71,165 people paid to get into Reliant Park on Sunday. The previous Go Tejano Day record of 70,481 was set in 2006.

Dozens of protestors lined the streets outside and said Rodeo Houston did not represent and include Hispanics appropriately.”*

Hispanic group calls for boycott of Houston Rodeo

“A group of Hispanic leaders said Tuesday that Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo officials haven’t done enough to include Hispanics, so they are calling for a boycott of the three-week show that starts Monday.

“We request our friends across the whole state of Texas not to attend the Houston Livestock Show,” said former state Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos.

Among complaints from the newly-formed group VIVE Tejano-Houston — made up of representatives from the Tejano music industry, Houston-area politicians and members of other professional organizations — is the type of performers at the show’s main venue on Go Tejano Day.”*

New LOS TIGRES DEL NORTE Album RAICES Set For March 4th Release

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

“

RAICES (“Roots”) Will Be The First Of Two New Los Tigres Records Planned For Release This Year, As The World’s “Most Influential Regional Mexican group” Celebrates Four Decades Of Making Music. While Los Tigres del Norte Has Always Given Voice To The Most Pressing Issues Facing The Immigrant Community, They Have Also Been Guardians Of The Community’s Cultural History. With The Appropriately Named Raices, The Legendary Los Tigres Honor The Best Of That Heritage With Newly Recorded Versions Of Classic Mexican Songs

Los Tigres is the most enduring binational band today because it hears the humble… Los Tigres del Norte has reinvented Mexican popular music… Every record sells a million copies…. Its logo is as well known in Mexican communities as Coca-Cola’s … Los Tigres [are] the most perceptive chroniclers of the Mexican American experience. In song, they reflect its most personal feelings, and take the side of these millions of immigrants who are voiceless on both sides of the border… following a Los Tigres concert schedule is to discover all the places Mexicans live… The songs of Los Tigres del Norte remain one of the clearest windows into the immigrant soul.”

         Los Angeles Times Magazine

During an unrivaled career as “[Regional Mexican] music’s greatest statesmen”(NY Times), the family band, known throughout the world as the legendary Los Tigres del Norte have been the immigrant community’s leading voice on issues of the day, as well as stewards of the people’s traditions and cultural heritage.  While the group continually chronicles the ongoing struggles of Mexican-Americans in the United States, it also provides a musical reminder of home and history.  Nowhere was this more evident then when the Hernandez family donated half-a-million dollars to UCLA’s Chicano Studies Research Center to fund the preservation of thousands of the earliest known recordings of Mexican music.

This year,  as Los Tigres del Norte celebrates four decades of making music (that began after crossing the border with oldest brother Jorge Hernandez just fourteen years old), the trail-blazing group plans to release two new albums that will respectively pay-tribute to the musicians that came before them, and then of course continuing their modern day chronicles through corridos.  On March 4th, Fonovisa Records will release the new Los Tigres album RAICES (“Roots”). As the album’s name details, this album finds Los Tigres sharing their take on some of the most culturally significant and historic titles from the songbook of Mexican folkloric tradition.  “Rumbo al Sur” – a famed ranchera with Tigres bassist Hernan Hernandez singing lead – has just gone to radio as the first single from the album.

While Los Tigres del Norte is tipping their hat to the songs of the past, they do not plan to rest on the laurels of the band’s own history.  This will become evident not only with a second Los Tigres album planned for August, but also with a soon-to-be announced digital partnership that will be the most comprehensive ever launched in the Regional-Mexican genre.  Likewise, even though they are already multiple GRAMMY, LATIN GRAMMY and PREMIO LO NUESTRO winners (not to mention recent recipients of the Latin Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award), Los Tigres continue to be recognized for each new recording, as they currently hold yet another GRAMMY nomination and THREE PREMIO LO NUESTRO nominations for their last album Detalles. Look for Los Tigres to begin sharing the songs of Raices this week as they return to the road for their marathon concerts that visit fairgrounds, rodeos, concert halls & armory dances across the country.

LOS TIGRES DEL NORTE Estrenan Su Nuevo

Album RAICES El 4 De Marzo

Fittingly, they are known as ‘la voz del pueblo’ (the voice of the people).  Los Tigres have recorded more then 55 albums, and sold more than 32 million copies… The band is famous for the epic scope of its concerts, which can go on for hours until every single request from the audience as been fulfilled. More then a supergroup, Los Tigres del Norte are a living icon – one of Mexico’s biggest contributions to the U.S. Latino culture”

- The Latin Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Awards Program

With details set to come shortly on a very special upcoming Los Tigres del Norte album, the world’s “most influential regional Mexican group” (Billboard) is preparing to once again take to the road in February and March for their marathon concerts that “bring music to the invisible people of America working under the radar(Orlando Weekly), sharing “songs [that provide] one of the clearest windows into the immigrant soul” (LA Times Magazine)  and “give strength to people who feel marginalized and under attack” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Along the course of the tour, Los Tigres may add to the award tally of their legendary four-decades long career,  as they once again possess a current GRAMMY nomination (Best Norteño Album), and three Premio Lo Nuestro nominations (Regional Mexican Album of The Year, Group of the Year, and Norteño Artist of the Year).  But win or lose, it will be the fairgrounds, rodeos, and armory dances across the country where Los Tigres will celebrate with fans.  Touring a full 10 months out of the year, the road is where you will always find Los Tigres del Norte, continuing their role as “the lyrical voice of the immigrant community” (Washington Post)

“For the last 40 years these grand men of music have taken their message of hope and hardship beyond the borderland and into millions of hearts throughout the United States and Mexico.” Dan Rather

“I was standing at the back of a stage in the Zocalo, Mexico City’s main square, looking out over a mob of 150,000 screaming fans of Los Tigres del Norte…In this world, Los Tigres are like Willie Nelson and the Rolling Stones combined, the enduring superstars of down-to-earth working class pop. Their Records sell in the millions, their concerts pack halls throughout the North American continent, and their songs have become part of the Mexican cultural heritage… Looking out over the largest audience ever gathered in Mexico’s central square, with all the traffic shut off for blocks in every direction and towering amplifiers bouncing accordion rhythms off the Spanish colonial buildings, no one could doubt the power of this music.” – Elijah Wald

Sebastian, Aguilar bring velvet voices to rodeo - Texas

“Rodeos are big productions in Texas. We’re not just talking dirt, horses and bulls. No, sir. These days it’s indoor-arena extravaganzas complete with top-draw musical entertainment and plenty of food and booze.

A jaripeo, a Mexican rodeo, is no different. Just ask Mexican music legend Joan Sebastín, who headlined Sunday night’s jaripeo at American Airlines Center. In addition to the fenced-in, soil-filled ring that took up the arena’s floor, the stage on one end featured openers La Original Banda El Limón and San Antonio’s Tabu.

While Banda El Limón cranked up the tuba and horns, cowboys took their turns on ornery bulls that tossed them around. Tabu, four cumbia-singing women chirping to prerecorded tracks, was merely a space-filler. A space-waster is more apt. The choreography, the freeze-dried rhythms, the shocking pink-and-black outfits – it was total cheese, folks. “

“Ricardo Palacios’ loving tribute to his calf-roping uncle digs deep into the tough ranching life of South Texas in the early 20th century.

But watch where you tread when you go excavating in such desolate Texas confines as Encinal, Cotulla and Laredo, the setting for Tio Cowboy: Juan Salinas, Rodeo Roper & Horseman.

You may learn some things best left buried, such as the old tales of how goat herders once castrated baby goats. Not for the squeamish.”

“Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts MECA is a community-based, non-profit organization, whose mission is to promote the healthy social, cultural, and academic development of inner-city at-risk youth through education in the arts. Mariachi MECA will travel to Hanoi, Vietnam on June 2nd and are scheduled to return to Houston, TX on June 14th. This trip will be the first time in MECAs history that MECA students have been invited to perform in Vietnam. Mariachi MECA youth will be chaperoned by Esmeralda Salinas, MECA Program Director, Dave Dove and Binh Nguyen, MECA Faculty. Mariachi MECA group will include 5 youth and 2 adult MECA musicians: Cristina del Rosario, Andrea Daniela Martinez and Coral Hernandez, Violinists; Rebecca Elaine Martinez, Vihuela; Brando Christopher Treviño, Trumpet; Jose Armando Pecina, Guitarron; and Vanessa Cerda-Alonzo, Lead Vocalist and Mariachi MECA Coordinator. TKK Concert Company Director, Mr. Nguyen Thui Kha arranged several performing and teaching opportunities throughout the duration of the trip. The highlight will be a scheduled performance for the Children of Nguyen Dinh Chieu Special School for the Blind.

MECA’s Mariachi Program best conveys the leadership MECA has shown in advancing Hispanic culture, as it was one of the first organizations in Houston, Texas to offer arts education instruction in traditionally marginalized “ethnic’ art forms such as Mariachi. MECA’s Mariachi Program serves over 130 students throughout the Houston area, and MECA’s advanced Mariachi ensemble, Mariachi MECA, has received local, statewide, national and international acclaim. Recent performances where Mariachi MECA acted as model ambassadors of Texas culture include the 2004 Houston Mayoral Inauguration, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the annual International Mariachi Festival in Guadalajara where they are one of the only student groups invited to perform, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and special performances in New York City, Northern Ireland, France and most recently in Stavanger, Norway. In 2001, MECA broke the glass ceiling by forming the first Mariachi Program at Houston’s prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Art. Since that time MECA has also developed a detailed Mariachi education curriculum that is a model for effective instruction, from beginners to advanced.

Funding for this trip came from Mariachi MECA performances, parents, fundraising events and grant donations. Mariachi MECA continues to work at raising funds for this trip. Many of the students have never traveled outside of their immediate community, which marks yet another life altering experience that MECA has been able to facilitate for its young musicians.
