Goya Foods Honors Papal Visit with Food Donation to Needy Families

“Goya Foods, the family-owned Latin American food company, proudly announced that it has pledged 125,000 pounds of food for families and children on the occasion of the first visit by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI to the United States. The food donation will allocate 85,000 pounds of food to the nation of Haiti which recently experienced riots brought on by food shortages and economic hardship. The products directed to Haiti will be donated through Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and will originate from Goya facilities in New Jersey, Miami and the Dominican Republic, which neighbors the country on the island of Hispaniola. “This very generous donation will allow CRS to supplement our food distributions to some of the most vulnerable populations in Haiti,” said Bill Canny, CRS country representative in Haiti. “We thank Goya for their assistance and look forward to our continued relationship as we help those who have been adversely affected by the current spike in food prices.”

An additional 40,000 pounds of food will be donated domestically to regional food banks in Richmond, Virginia, courtesy of the Goya facilities in Prince George County. “Goya Foods is privileged to welcome His Holiness and can think of no better way to honor the legacy of the Holy Father than by helping those less fortunate,” stated Robert Unanue, Goya Foods President. “The donation we are making to Haiti represents our commitment to the Haitian people, not only in Haiti, but in Miami, New York and the rest of the United States.”

Goya Foods has a long history of giving aid to Hispanic and Caribbean communities such as Haiti as well as participating in global efforts during times of natural disasters and times of need. Most recently, Goya has provided food relief to flood victims in the Dominican Republic and Mexico in addition to earthquake victims in Peru. As part of its salute to the Papal visit, a Goya spokesman indicated that the company is also sponsoring 50 commemorative banners to be displayed throughout Manhattan and the Bronx during the month of April. The banners will be prominently placed in the area of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, on Third Avenue from 90th to 96th Streets and in the areas surrounding Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, site of the highly anticipated Papal Mass on April 20th.

The papal visit to New York, which will include an address to the United Nations, a prayer at Ground Zero and masses held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Yankee Stadium, is viewed with special reverence by many Americans. “Goya Foods has a well established tradition of helping people in need,” said Peter Unanue, Executive Vice President, Goya Foods. “Our welcoming of Pope Benedict through this donation and the sponsorship of commemorative banners reflects the importance of His Holiness to the United States and our support of his message of charity to the world-at-large,” concluded Unanue.

Goya Foods Launches Promotional Sponsorship of ‘Bella’

Tags: , , , , , , ,

“Goya Foods today announced that it will launch a multi-dimensional promotional campaign for the highly-acclaimed film “Bella”, winner of the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival’s “People’s Choice Award”. The independently-produced film, brainchild of Mexican icon Eduardo Verástegui who serves as both star and producer, has won enthusiastic reviews from a variety of media outlets including CNN’s Anna Maria Montero who called it “Powerful and moving … a true inspiration.” Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Alejandro Gomez Monteverde, this charming movie is a life-changing love story centered on family, friendship and a love that goes deeper than romance.

According to Goya Foods President Robert Unanue, “Goya has chosen to take on an active role in the promotion of this film owing to its emphasis on the strength of family and tradition. Of equal importance to us was the fact that “Bella” portrays Latinos in such a positive light and of course, that food plays an integral role in the story”. The film will open nationwide on October 26th and in support of its debut, Goya will host the October 23rd premiere in Miami, Florida at the Olympia Theatre, Gusman Center as well as the October 24th premiere in New York City at Tribeca Cinemas. Goya’s sponsorship includes strategic product placement in the DVD, the production and placement of 30-second radio commercials in Spanish language markets, as well as the underwriting of a short video produced by Goya on “Bella”. The video will be featured prominently at the Premiere as well as on Goya’s website www.goya.com, the “Bella” website, www.bellathemovie.com and the DVD version of the film scheduled for release in 2008.
The selection of “Bella” as winner in the Toronto International Film Festival bodes well for the production and its cast. Previous winners of the People’s Choice category have gone on to Academy Award(TM) nominations and more. Films such as “American Beauty”, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and 2006 foreign-language film winner “Tsotsi” have all been distinguished by the honor. Enthused producer/star Eduardo Verástegui said, “I wanted to portray Latinos as everyday heroes who are hard-working people of integrity… Family is the foundation of society for the Latino culture”. The sentiment is echoed by Unanue who concludes, “There are few opportunities that we get as a Latin American food company to embrace such an uplifting message about Hispanics in the film medium. Bella is that rare chance to team up with a project that affirms the values and sentiment that go into the Goya Foods credo and are integral to our success. We are proud sponsors of this heartfelt and moving endeavor.”

Goya Launches New Integrated Branding Campaign

“Goya Foods, Inc., the largest Hispanic- owned food company in the United States, this week launches an extensive new brand advertising effort, part of an integrated marketing campaign representing the largest single investment in the history of the company.

Leveraging the huge popularity of Latino cuisine in mainstream American culture, the new advertising positions Goya as the ultimate provider of “authentic” Latino ingredients and foods for various generations of Hispanic consumers as well as a new segment in the general market of enthusiastic cooks with a passion to create, experience and share authentic ethnic foods at the family table.

The multi-channel campaign includes national, local and cable TV ads in 11 key markets, both general and Hispanic, as well as an online component.

Robert Unanue, President of Goya, said, “We see a historic opportunity to accelerate Goya’s growth in the mainstream U.S. market by capitalizing on today’s mega-trend toward Latin food preferences and the resurgence of in-home cooking, which plays to our core brand equity as the premier purveyor of ‘authentic’ Latino foods.”

The centerpiece of the new effort is a television campaign (1 30-second anthem and 2 product-specific 15-second commercials) from Winglatino, the Hispanic marketing communications company of WPP’s Grey Global Group. The TV spots are a tender evocation of the importance of “home” in everyone’ s life and the role Goya has always played in creating meals with the home-made flavor of authentic Latino ingredients. Each commercial ends with the tagline: “If it’s Goya, it has to be good.”

Gary Bonilla, Vice President, Strategic Planning Director of Winglatino, said, “Our research uncovered an ethnic neutral target: ‘Kitchen Artists’ who love cooking at home. They are inspired to use their creativity to create home-cooked meals across cultures to bring friends and family back to the dining room. Goya gives them the quality, taste and convenience they crave.”

Jackie Bird, President and CEO of Winglatino, said, “The TV ads convey the importance of coming home and savoring the joys of food and family to make an emotional connection with all consumers. The ads reinforce both Latino cultural values and deeply-held loyalty for Goya while tapping into non- Latinos desires to experiment with new ethnic food flavors.”

“Goya Foods, the largest Hispanic- owned food company in the United States is bringing the taste of Latin America to historic Yankee Stadium this season, as it becomes a new sponsor of the celebrated franchise. The season-long sponsorship includes a permanent porch sign in left field, a promotional day on July 31st and the operation of a Latino food concession stand featuring food made with Goya products and ingredients. This endeavor is indicative of the growing popularity of Latino food and its culture in all aspects of the American experience. “We are thrilled to be a sponsor of the New York Yankees and prouder still to introduce Latin American food to the ‘House that Ruth Built.’ Given the tremendous contributions that Latino players and their fans have made to America’s favorite past-time, the pairing of Latino food with baseball is a home run,” stated Robert Unanue, President of Goya Foods.

As a leader in the Latin American food industry, Goya continues to be at the forefront in introducing Latino food to America. “Throughout the United States, Latino culture has become an integral part of the American experience. We have found that people are eager to learn about all things Latino - be it music, dance and most especially food! Our new food concession “Salsa on the Go” is a response to this consumer demand,” stated Joseph Perez, Goya’s Senior Vice-President.

The aptly named “Salsa on the Go” is located at the Food Court on Field Level, Section 20. Here fans will be treated to a variety of freshly prepared Latin American favorites, made with Goya products and ingredients, including Cuban sandwiches with Plantain Chips, Chicken in Salsa with Rice and Beans, Beef or Cheese Empanadas, Sweet Plantains and beverages in flavors like Mango, Passion Fruit and Guava. “We are excited about our new and growing relationship with Goya. With such a great brand presence in the Tri-state area, especially in the South Bronx where there is such a strong Latino community, Latino food and Goya’s presence at Yankee Stadium is only natural” said Lonn A. Trost, New York Yankees Chief Operating Officer.

“The New York Yankees symbolize excellence and tradition. Goya Foods, founded over 70 years ago, have always embraced these two concepts in its mission to bring America’s families the highest quality authentic Latin American cuisine. Our sponsorship of the New York Yankees and the inauguration of Goya’s “Salsa on the Go” food concession is a great opportunity to give our loyal consumers, and new fans alike, the food they love, while enjoying a winning season” concluded Mr. Unanue.
