Latin Music USA - A Multi-Media Event Premieres January 21, 2009 on PBS
Tags: Daddy Yankee, Emilio Estefan, Juanes, Marc Anthony, pbs, Ricky Martin, Tejano
From Latin Jazz and Mambo to Salsa, Tejano, Chicano Rock, Latin pop, and Reggaeton, Latin Music USA tells the story of the rise of new American music forged from powerful Latin roots and reveals the often overlooked influence of Latin music on Jazz, Hip Hop, Rhythm and Blues and Rock and Roll - and on all of American culture. It’s a fresh take on our musical history, reaching across time and across musical genres to embrace the exciting hybrid sounds created by Latinos, musical fusions that have deeply enriched popular music in the US over more than five decades.
The series features memorable characters and vibrant music and dance showcasing the impressive range of Latin music in the US, including, among others, Salsa greats Willy Colon and Marc Anthony; the Latin-inflected sound found in much of sixties Rock and Roll from the Drifters to Motown to the Rolling Stones; the genius of Texas accordion player Flaco Jimenez; Carlos Santana; Linda Ronstadt; the legendary Chicano rock band Los Lobos; megastars Gloria and Emilio Estefan; Ricky Martin and Juanes; Miami rapper Pitbull; and Reggaeton performers Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderon. The life experiences of these and many other unforgettable artists will reveal how Latinos have reinvented music in the United States and forged new identities within this country, while never losing sight of their own rich traditions.
Produced by a world-class production team at WGBH and the BBC, Latin Music USA “invites the audience into the vibrant musical conversation between Latinos and non-Latinos that has helped shape the history of popular music in the United States,” says series producer Adriana Bosch. The multimedia project is anchored by a four-hour documentary series that premieres on January 21, 2009 on PBS stations nationwide.
“Latin Music USA has the potential to be a cultural milestone, advancing Americans’ understanding of Latino rhythm and music as a dynamic player in shaping American society past, present and future,” said John F. Wilson, senior vice president and chief television programming executive, PBS. “And music, the universal language, communicates this phenomenon in a most irresistible way.”

Tags: Maná, Ricky Martin, sales, Shakira, Wisin & Yandel
Wisin & Yandel took Los Angeles by storm this past week during the presentation of their new CD Wisin vs. Yandel: Otra Dimension at the Hard Rock Café Universal City Walk. Thousand waited for hours to get a glimpse of their favorite urban Latin superstars Wisin & Yandel. The Instore established a sales record by selling 1,600 in just two hours.
The scene repeated itself again on the following day, when thousands convened at the Staples Arena to enjoy Wisin & Yandel’s first concert at this arena. By 6:00 pm that evening there were absolutely no tickets left, a feat that have only been exceeded by acts like Ricky Martin, Maná, Revelde and Shakira.”*

The ALAS Organization’s “Concierto Por Los Niños” (Concert For The Children) Unites Over 380,000 On-Site Fans and Millions of TV Viewers In A Momentous Show Of Solidarity To Aid Latin America’s Most Vulnerable Children
Over Two Dozen Of Latin Music’s Biggest Superstars Such As Shakira, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé, Juan Luis Guerra, Maná, Los Tigres del Norte, Gustavo Cerati, Calle 13 & Many More Appear At Historic Free Concerts In Mexico City & Buenos Aeries That Have Been Called ‘Latin America’s Live-Aid’
“crowds gathered in two of Latin America’s most iconic capitals, the excitement contagious. Its not everyday that the region’s biggest names in entertainment gather in song and never before have they come together like this for a common cause. Ricky Martin, Shakira, Miguel Bosé-just a few of the dozens of Latin American artists hoping to use their music to launch a movement against childhood poverty in the region” – CNN
(see full CNN segment here: http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/?rn=3906861&cl=7872472&ch=4226714&src=news)
Two days after announcing that philanthropists such as Carlos Slim Helú, Howard Buffet had pledged more than $200 Million toward programs to aid impoverished children in Latin America, the ALAS (América Latina en Acción Solidaria ) organization – translated as ‘Wings’ in Spanish – brought nearly 400,000 concert fans and millions of TV viewers together through an unprecedented day of music entitled “El Concierto Por Los Niños” (The Concert For The Children.” With more than two dozen of the Latin music world’s leading superstars (such as Shakira, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé and MANY more) taking to the stage at massive free concerts in Mexico City and Buenos Aires for an event already being dubbed by press as “Latin America’s Live Aid,” ALAS designed the historic event to inspire both public and private sector support for Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs to aid the more than 32 Million children in the region living in poverty.
“Not so long ago, Latin American artists who spoke up for social causes often risked prison, exile or far worse. What a difference a generation makes… a phalanx of Spanish-speaking pop artists headed by Colombian superstar Shakira and Spanish-Italian singer Miguel Bosé gathered to promote a new initiative to aid Latin America’s millions of poor, malnourished and undereducated children. They were joined by the world’s second-richest man, a top U.S. philanthropist and an international mob of reporters drawn by a potent cocktail of celebrity, money and power, laced with an emerging social conscience … “What’s very inspiring is to see Latin America for the first time in charge of its own issues,” said Shakira… [the] concerts, the most high-profile project yet by Latin artists to fuse charity with celebrity, are expected to draw a total audience in the hundreds of thousands. ALAS is the first Latin American organization to bring together so many prominent artists and financial impresarios behind a single cause, early childhood development assistance” – Los Angeles Times
“…billionaire Carlos Slim Helú does not seem to like appearing in public, but he apparently could not resist an invitation from the Colombian pop star Shakira and about a dozen other Latin music stars. Mr. Slim was on hand in Mexico City for the announcement of two free rock concerts to raise awareness of ALAS, a foundation started by Shakira and other musicians….The goal of ALAS, which means “wings” in Spanish, is to press business leaders and governments to finance early-childhood development programs in Latin America. The foundation claimed a major success on Thursday [as] Mr. Slim pledged $110 million to children’s programs [and] Howard Buffett pledged $85 million to existing Latin American projects. “When Shakira calls, you show up, so here I am,” said Mr. Buffett – New York Times (Sunday Business Section)

Latin stars sing for poor children at concerts - ALAS

A lineup of Latin mega-stars including Shakira, Ricky Martin and Alejandro Sanz performed simultaneously on stages in Buenos Aires and Mexico City at the weekend, raising awareness for the needs of poor children in Latin America.
Outspoken Colombian rocker Juanes, one of the most anticipated performers at Saturday’s event, was absent due to problems with his plane.
Organized by the Fundacion ALAS (Latin America in Solidarity Action), the concerts, which have been widely referred to as the Latin American version of 2005’s Live 8 anti-poverty concerts, brought together more than 380,000 people in the Mexican capital’s Zocalo plaza and the riverside Costanera Sur in Buenos Aires. Mexican magnate Carlos Slim and Howard Buffett, son of billionaire Warren Buffett, donated $200 million to combat poverty in Latin America.”*

Yahoo! Telemundo today launched Search Assist, the most advanced assistance technology available on the Web, as well as the integration of video and photos within the search results, making Web search an effortless task for U.S. Hispanic consumers. The new Yahoo! Telemundo Search was designed to better understand user intent and provide them with the results they are looking for in just one search.
Recent research conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Yahoo! on the state of the Web shows that consumers are suffering from “Web Search fatigue.” The study revealed that 99 percent of online adults use a search engine to find information on the Internet, with a mere 15 percent of people finding what they’re looking for with their first search and typically needing to conduct three to four searches.
“The new Yahoo! Telemundo Search was created to optimize user experience and get consumers what they want on the first search query,” said Jose Rivera Font, vice president and general manager, Yahoo! Hispanic Americas. “Consumers want answers and they want them quickly, so the changes we’ve made are focused on getting people to the best answer - whether it be a Web link, photo, video or video clip - all in one search.”
Search Assist goes beyond basic search “suggestions” and gives consumers real-time query suggestions as well as related topics and concepts, which is especially valuable when a person is searching for an unfamiliar topic.
Yahoo! Search Assist is there for consumers when they need it and can be turned off when they don’t. As a user types in the search box, it predicts when the person needs help with their search and opens a drop down menu of suggestions and related concepts (see diagram 1*) that enable further exploration around their search topic.
In addition to the new Search Assist feature, Yahoo! Telemundo Search has also introduced multimedia integration including video and photos (see diagram 2*) directly in the search results — allowing consumers to get their answer - whether it’s a Web link, photo or video clip — without leaving the page.
The Search Assist feature also includes YouTube and Metacafe videos indexed by Yahoo!. In addition, consumers can use shortcuts if they are only interested in accessing videos on these particular sites. To do this, they should type in the search word followed by the site they want to look in, like site:www.youtube.com or site:www.metacafe.com. For example: “caída de edgar site:www.youtube.com”. When the consumer finds the video they are looking for, they will see a still photo of it and a direct link to play the video.
Similarly, Yahoo! Telemundo users can also integrate images in their search results by adding the word ‘imágenes’ after their keyword search. For example: “Shakira Imágenes”. (see diagram #2*)
The Spanish-language versions of Search Assist, available in Yahoo! Telemundo, Yahoo! México and Yahoo! Argentina, are tailor-made to reflect local search behavior, language and tendencies. So when you search for ‘Ricky Martin’ on Yahoo! Telemundo Search, Search Assist won’t suggest “photos, lyrics, songs, music” like it does in the U.S., instead, it will offer most suggestions in Spanish like “fotos, biografía, videos, conciertos”.
As part of the new Yahoo! Telemundo Search, consumers will also see new Yahoo! Search Shortcuts, with the most useful information found on the Web, including information contributed by other online users. The new shortcuts were designed to help consumers save time when searching for popular categories such as images, news, weather, maps, and directions (see diagrams 3-6*).
Since its initial launch in October of 2007, Yahoo! Search Assist is now available in 15 countries, including Argentina and Mexico, and in seven languages.

Call and Live will promote free confidential hotline (1-888 NO-TRATA)
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Ricky Martin Foundation, the non-governmental organization Ayuda and the DC Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs have partnered to launch Call and Live in Washington DC, a campaign that promotes an anti-trafficking hotline for prevention and victim protection. Other local partners of the initiative include Telemundo, Univisión, Washington Hispanic and Radio Viva 900.
Ricky Martin, IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno and Ayuda Executive Director Mauricio Vivero will launch the campaign in an event scheduled to take place on April 29, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the IDB Headquarters (1330 New York Avenue, Washington, D.C).
The campaign aims to reach 100,000 Latinos in the D.C. area with prevention messages about human trafficking and provide access to legal and social services for victims through a Spanish-language hotline. Call and Live has been implemented in Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Peru and Nicaragua, where it has triggered more than 55.000 relevant calls to the national hotlines, 60 police investigations, and the rescue of at least a dozen victims.
The IDB is launching this initiative in Washington D.C. as part of its local corporate responsibility efforts. The Bank’s IDB-DC Solidarity Program builds strategic partnerships with local community-based organizations to promote development initiatives aimed largely at Hispanic and Caribbean communities in the District of Columbia.
The Ricky Martin Foundation is a non-profit organization that advocates for children’s rights and condemns the exploitation of this most vulnerable population.
Ayuda is a community-based, nonprofit organization which is recognized as the leading source of multi-lingual legal and social services for low-income immigrants in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
The DC Mayor’s Office on Latino Affairs was established in 1976 to ensure that the concerns of the Latino community are heard and adequately addressed in the city.
Members of the press (including print, radio, and television) wishing to cover the event can pre-register with the IDB press contact, Diana Lesbines Braier at 202-623-1713, dianal@iadb.org, or register on-site the day of the event with appropriate press credentials.

Latin songwriter/producer releases solo disc - Tommy Torres
Tags: Banking, radio, Ricky Martin, Tommy Torres
Tommy Torres is known in the music industry as a prolific songwriter and producer for the likes of Ricky Martin and Jaci Velasquez.
But many don’t know Torres the artist, a singer/songwriter whose solo career has been set aside by his success in other areas.
Now, in the wake of the April 1 release of his third solo album, “Tarde o Temprano,” Torres is banking on a new record label — Warner Music Latina — a new sound and a more open-minded radio scene to really get his voice heard.”*

Victor Manuelle will be honored with the ASCAP Golden Note Award, which is presented to songwriters, composers, and artists who have achieved extraordinary career milestones, and Black Guayaba will receive the ASCAP Vanguard Award in recognition of their impact, as new and developing musical artists, on shaping the future of their musical genre and the future of music.
Victor Manuelle has amassed significant achievements as a singer and songwriter and continues to be a familiar voice to Latin Music fans ever since his first album was released in 1993. Since then, he has produced chart-toping albums with substantial radio hits every single year. In March 2004, his album “Travesía,” produced by Emilio Esfefan, went to #1 on the Latin Billboard charts. In 2005, he released two live albums: “Victor Manuelle En Vivo Desde El Carnegie Hall,” recorded at Carnegie Hall, and “Dos Soneros…Una Historia” (Two Soneros…One Story), from his historical collaboration with Gilberto Santarosa, recorded live at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in Puerto Rico. In 2007, he released his DVD “En Vivo Desde El Madison Square Garden,” and under his own record label, Kiyavi, his first Christmas album “Una Navidad a Mi Estilo” (Christmas My Style), which became an instant classic of new compositions of traditional Puerto Rican music. Victor Manuelle has thirteen musical productions to his credit, has achieved several #1 radio hits of his own authorship and has sold over two million albums.
Victor Manuelle joins an elite list of ASCAP members who have been honored with the ASCAP Golden Note Award, including Garth Brooks, Jose Feliciano, Quincy Jones, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Tom Petty, Joan Sebastian and Stevie Wonder, among others.
The members of Grammy Award-winning rock band Black Guayaba are the first Latin music artists to be recognized with the ASCAP Vanguard Award. Other notable recipients include The All-American Rejects, The Beastie Boys, Beck and Bjork, among others.
In a short amount of time, Black Guayaba — formed by Gustavo González (vocalist), Javier Morales (guitar), Carlos Ortíz (bass), Carlos Colón (keyboards) and Gabriel Calero (drums) — has earned a solid fan base and has been recognized for their unique style and genre-affecting sound. They originally began playing at local pubs and private events before preparing original material for their first album. They released “Lo Demás es Plástico” in 2005, which was produced by Bob St. John, who had previously worked with Ricky Martin, Duran Duran and Collective Soul, among others. The album spawned several hit singles, such as “Lejos,” “Atrapado,” and “Despacio.” It was that success which gave them the opportunity of being the opening act for bands Enanitos Verdes and Journey during their concerts in Puerto Rico. They had their first concert at the Luis A. Ferré Performing Arts Center in March 2006, the same year they were nominated for a Latin Grammy and a Grammy. In 2007, the band released their second album titled, “No Hay Espacio,” featuring the single “Sin Tu Amor.” In February 2008 they won their first Grammy in the category of Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.
ASCAP’s Latin Music Awards is one of the most attended and celebrated events in the Latin entertainment community. Victor Manuelle and Black Guayaba join a select list of Latin music icons that have been singled out for special recognition at ASCAP’s Latin Music Awards, including Antonio Aguilar, Ricardo Arjona, Rubén Blades, Celia Cruz, Franco De Vita, José Feliciano, Ednita Nazario, Tito Puente, Arturo Sandoval, Joan Sebastian, Gilberto Santa Rosa and Olga Tañón.
During the May 16th event, ASCAP will also recognize the Songwriter of the Year, Publisher of the Year and Song of the Year, and Awards will be presented in the following categories: Pop, Tropical, Regional Mexican, Rock, Urban and Television.
