Somaya Reece, the No 1 Latina on MySpace, Finds a New Home at www.missreece.com

Tags: ,

“With over 21 million views and more than 700,000 friends, Somaya Reece, the #1 Latina on MySpace, debuts her own website: www.missreece.com in association with ShareNow.com (www.sharenow.com), a lifestyle social networking and file-sharing website.

Somaya Reece, hailed as “The Next Sophia Loren”, is a voluptuous vixen with 38D-28-46 dimensions. It’s easy to see why this Salvadorean beauty from South Central was recently named the Hottest Latina in Music by “Maxim” en Español, UK and Philippines. The ultimate triple treat, Somaya has already proven herself as an actress, a model and a musician. As an actress, she has participated in “American Psycho” (2002), “The Scorpion King” (2002), “Ride or Die” (2003), “Miss Cast Away” (2004) and in the hit television shows “Girlfriends” and “Entourage”. In 2008, Somaya was nominated “Internet Hottie” By Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards; Telemundo called her “The Latina Jessica Rabbit”; and she was voted “Hottest Woman on the Web” by E! As a model, she has appeared in high-profile campaigns for Ralph Lauren, DKNY, Colgate, Pepsi, Budweiser, and Coors Light.

As a musician, Somaya has had over 3.6 million spins in just ten and a half weeks for her debut single “Mira mi pum pum” and was the first unsigned artist to reign 18 weeks on the “top ranked” music charts as a “featured artist” on imeem.com

Somaya has proven to be a successful viral/internet marketing powerhouse. Who knows? Maybe she could be he next Lil’ Wayne! “My hard work is beginning to pay off and, so far, has allowed me to purchase my first home, a beachfront house in Belize,” she says happily. “Now, I am working toward acquiring my second property here in LA for my parents!”

Born and raised in South Central in a freezing garage with her family, working 3 jobs and getting no sleep, she comments, “I went through years of financial and emotional struggle to get here. No managers helped me. I did it on my own! All to help feed my family. I was once living “la vida loca.” The “thug life” almost killed me a grip of times. I changed for the better of my family and to motivate and inspire you… You gotta respect that.”

Somaya fans will now be able to see her on www.missreece.com where she will be debuting her “first” independent music video and will begin vlogging. Besides her website, Somaya now has a deal with iTunes and has begun working with billboard charting producers such as Scoop Deville, The Pharmacy, and Qura Rankin AKA 007 Blaq.

Iglesias Nights - An Evening of Salsa Dancing and Latin Culture in Los Angeles

Tags: , , , , , ,

“Imagine a night of sensual Latin performers, igniting the dance floor with their passion for life, and their spirit for living. The vibrant strains of the music, combined with the flavors and spicy taste of Tapas and Empanadas, along with the distilled liquid fire of premium Tequila cocktails - this sounds like the opening of a hot new, Latin dance club in Los Angeles, right? Something you would expect in the City of Angels - but this time there is a twist. It is not a new club; it is a charity fundraiser, and a book signing hosted by Rodrigo Iglesias on Tuesday, July 29th, 2008.

Rodrigo Iglesias, a local Real Estate agent and investor, ranking in the top 1% of the Real Estate professionals internationally, wants the L.A. community to experience Latin culture at its finest with a night of dancing, fine food, and cocktails. The evening starts with Salsa Lessons with Rodrigo and Vai, recognized instructors and performers that have appeared in major commercials and on national television including the hit ABC show, Dancing with the Stars.

The duo recently choreographed for Chris Brown and Rihanna at the 2008 BET Awards and now lend their talents to create an explosive night of entertainment with a special appearance by Sandor, a Tony nominated choreographer from the acclaimed London production Forever Tango and his partner, Parissa, Antonio Banderas’ dancing coach in the film Take the Lead.

The night continues with the debut of the vocal styling of the singer Kapovianco, from Bolivia, performing his new single “Dale Pa’lante.” And as a bonus, proceeds from the event will go towards two of Mr. Iglesias’ favorite local charities - Green Dot Public Schools, a non-profit working to change the public education system in Los Angeles to emphasize leadership, and life skills, and Chicar, a non-profit organization dedicated to the empowerment of Latino youth through financial education, helping them to keep moving forward towards success, regardless of hardships or setbacks.

The event marks the WORLD PREMIERE of Rodrigo Iglesias’ new project, a complete Spanish translation and adaptation of the 1904 classic, “The Science of Getting Rich,” by Wallace D. Wattles. In 1995, Mr. Iglesias first experienced the impact of this book in its English form at a seminar conducted by renowned inspirational speaker, Bob Proctor. Proctor has inspired tens of thousands of people including Rhonda Byrne, writer of the extraordinarily successful book and movie, “The Secret.” Similarly, Rodrigo Iglesias was motivated to further his own career using the principals of the book, and then inspired to make this knowledge available to the Latin community for the first time - not only in Spanish, but in an easy “down to earth adaptation” of these teachings, and by integrating the training and methods into Latin music and lyrics. This unique music and lyrical combination will be heard for the first time at this special unveiling event - called Iglesias Nights.

When asked what moved him to use music as a teaching medium, Mr. Iglesias stated, “The lyrics and music help to lift the listener’s spirit, assist them in finding a sense of purpose, and open the mind and heart to a sense of passion and life that drives them to achieve anything they truly desire.”

This dynamic event is the first of many to follow with an emphasis on the flavors of Latin Culture, coupled with the much-needed encouragement of today’s youth towards achievement and prosperity. Mr. Iglesias plans to relentlessly continue his unique and powerful new approach to inspiring others to reach for their dreams - all while enjoying festive Latin music and culture at the same time. Iglesias Nights also promises to provide a great opportunity for upcoming Latin artists like Kapovianco to gain exposure, and to provide inspiration to the community, in a truly exceptional way. By combining the distinctive aspects of Latin food, music, and dancing, Rodrigo Iglesias has created a powerful method of delivering his message of personal and financial success to the public.

To learn more about Rodrigo Iglesias, Iglesias Nights, and the new Spanish language translation and adaptation of “The Science of Getting Rich” (ISBN - 978-0741446268), details can be found at the event’s website, www.iglesiasnights.com, or www.rodrigoiglesias.com. Tickets for the first event on Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 are available online for $30, with proceeds going to the two charities. A VIP package is also available, and media requests should be forwarded to Veronica Jacuinde, at (310) 508-1896.”

MTV TR3S PRESENTS THE CIRCO ROCKTASTICO TOUR FEATURING MONTE NEGRO-NEW ALBUM, CICATRIX OUT AUGUST 5th

Los Angeles, CA—MTV Tr3s has joined forces with Monte Negro and two other California-based alternative rock bands (Astra Heights, The May Fire) to bring their diverse takes on the burgeoning Latin alternative scene to the West and Midwest for six weeks in August and September. With new records coming out on August 5th from both The May Fire (The List / self-released) and Monte Negro (Cicatrix / Epic Records), the tour kicks off on August 6th in San Diego.

The music of Monte Negro, defies a simple description. Most say melodic rock, which is true, yet there are distinct undertones and layers making it eclectic and bohemian, American yet definitely worldly. Their music has landed them in magazines such as Spin, La Banda Elástica, and Billboard, they have worked with famed producer Tone (Green Day, Carlos Santana) and played alongside a diverse line up of bands like Todos Tus Muertos, Matisyahu, 311, Coldplay, NIN, Incubus, At The Drive In, and Molotov. Monte Negro most recently performed with the Mexican alternative band Zoe and L.A.’s multiethnic band, Ozomatli. Monte Negro was also MTV Tr3s’s “Descubre & Download” artist (January through March of 2008). The band’s new release Cicatrix will be featured on The LEAK July 29th – August 5th (www.music.mtvtr3s.com).

Monte Negro is a bilingual band that has devoured enough music genres over the years to do justice to the bilingual and bicultural musicians that constitute the group. Digesting healthy portions of Jane’s Addiction, The Cure, The Clash, and the Sex Pistols, Monte Negro has also piled onto its proverbial plate Latin-alternative rockers such as Caifanes, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Maldita Vecindad, Mano Negra, Soda Stereo, and Spinetta.

Mexican-American brothers Kinski and Rodax—the vocalist and bass player—like so many first-generation Americans working toward assimilation, initially overlooked the richness of their roots. Kinksi and Rodax recruited Jason Li Shing, a Chinese-Japanese American guitarist. After trying a heavier sound with another drummer, Monte Negro hired drummer Xavier Lopez and arrived at its current line-up in 2003. Today, Monte Negro is finally producing the sound they describe as an “amalgamation of styles filtering through our creative sides.” Pop sensibilities mix with darker experimentation to give the listener an acoustic journey through the Monte Negro landscape. Monte Negro’s goal is simple: play for a lot of people and get a reaction.

MOSI HONORS INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED MOLECULAR BIOLOGIST AS 2008

NATIONAL HISPANIC SCIENTIST OF THE YEAR

***

www.mosi.org/nationalhispanicscientist.html

Tampa, FL (July 22, 2008) – World-renowned molecular biologist and founding member of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), Dr. Lydia Villa-Komaroff, has been named MOSI’s (Museum of Science & Industry) 2008 National Hispanic Scientist of the Year.

Mexican American, Dr. Lydia Villa-Komaroff is deeply committed to the recruitment and retention of minorities in science.  As founding member of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science, Villa-Komaroff has served as both a board member and vice president of the organization.  She makes frequent presentations to students of all ages and provides lab research opportunities for high school and undergraduate students.  She currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Cytonome, Inc., a company building the first optical cell sorter of human cells for therapeutic use. Villa-Komaroff was a key member of the research team that first demonstrated that bacterial cells could produce insulin, pioneering work that is widely cited in the book “Invisible Frontiers: The Race to Clone the Insulin Gene” by Stephen Hall.

During her 20 year research career, Villa-Komaroff has held positions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, University of Massachusetts Medical School and Harvard Medical School.  As a science administrator, she has served as Vice President for Research at Northwestern University in Illinois and the Vice President for Research and Chief Operating Officer of Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

“With all of the hardships facing today’s youth, we are honored to celebrate the accomplishments of such a gifted Hispanic professional in science and education who is working to inspire successful career and life choices,” said Wit Ostrenko, MOSI President.

For eight years, MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry) has recognized nationally distinguished Hispanic science and engineering professionals to serve as role models and mentors for Tampa Bay’s Hispanic youth. Past honorees include a former U.S. Surgeon General, a Nobel Laureate of Chemistry, a NASA astronaut, a marine biologist, a Harvard professor of pathology and former chief of immunogenetics at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a seismologist and former director of the Carnegie Academy for Science Education (CASE), Washington, D.C., and most recently, an industrial engineer and the first Hispanic to serve as acting head of the Engineering Directorate at the National Science Foundation (NSF).

This year MOSI will present the National Hispanic Scientist of the Year Award to Dr. Lydia Villa-Komaroff during a gala award ceremony on Saturday, October 11, 2008.

The mission of the MOSI National Hispanic Scientist of the Year Award is to recognize outstanding Hispanic scientists who promote a greater public understanding of science and motivate Hispanic youths’ interest in science.  Proceeds from the event help to fund scholarships for at-risk youth who participate in MOSI’s Youth Enriched by Science program.

The Youth Enriched by Science, “YES!” Team, is a career and educational enrichment program designed to help at-risk youth, between the ages 13 to 17, develop and progress in a supportive peer-group environment.  Established in 1992, the focus of the program is to provide an opportunity for students to develop self-confidence, improve communication skills, build self-esteem and exhibit leadership skills.  In addition, students are encouraged and motivated to pursue science both as a career and as an essential element of their total education.  Mentors train students on science education, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, and incorporating their ideas into museum programs.  Since 1996 about 90% of “YES!” Team participants have gone on to attend college.

In the year 2000 the Hispanic dropout rate rested at 27.8%, compared to 7% for White, non-Hispanic students and 13% for Black, non-Hispanic students.[1] These statistics are significant when considering the rapid population growth experienced by the Hispanic minority group.  Studies show that in the year 2000 Hispanics comprised 12% of the total U.S. population, and it is estimated that this number will increase to 25% by the year 2050.

About MOSI (Museum of Science & Industry)

MOSI is a not-for-profit, community-based institution and educational resource dedicated to advancing public interest, knowledge, and understanding of science, industry, and technology. With a total size of over 300,000 square feet, MOSI is the largest science center in the southeastern United States, and home to the only IMAX® Dome Theatre in the state of Florida. Kids In Charge! Move Over Margarita! Mexican Food has a New Dinner Partner

Tags: , ,

“AltaMed Health Services hosted its third annual East LA Meets Napa celebration featuring more than 20 Latino owned/managed wineries, Latino wine makers and 20 Los Angeles area Mexican restaurants. The event was attended by more than 1,000 wine and culinary enthusiasts who enjoyed great music, food from some of the best Mexican/Latin restaurants in the city and wonderful conversation in one of Los Angeles’ most historic venues — Union Station. The celebration speaks to a trend among aficionados of Mexican cuisine to choose wine over beer or margaritas to accompany their meal.

Many of the business owners that showcased their products share an immigrant experience, with some of the winemakers working their way up from the fields. The event provided these entrepreneurs with the opportunity to come together to support AltaMed’s mission of providing quality, culturally relevant health care to underserved populations throughout Southern California.

“This year’s event has been the most successful yet and we expect the attendance to keep growing,” said Castulo De La Rocha, AltaMed CEO. “These Latino entrepreneurs and event sponsors are not only here to showcase their products, they are supporting our organization’s programs and our mission to provide quality health care to underserved communities in the Southern California region.”

In 1990 there were just a few Latino-owned vineyards and today there are well over 15 and growing each year. One such success story is that of Ceja Vineyards. In 1983 Pedro and Amelia Ceja with other family members, pooled their resources and invested in fifteen acres in Carneros. Coming to the United States as farm workers, the family has worked hard over the years for Ceja’s stellar reputation.

“Robledo Family Winery is a strong supporter of AltaMed and this event,” said Vanessa Robledo, spokesperson for Robledo Family Winery. “We believe in what they are doing for Latino families and other diverse communities by providing critical health services.”

In addition to Robledo Family Winery, other participating wineries were Alex Sotelo Cellars, Carneros della Notte, El Centauro del Norte, Frias Family Vineyard, J Lohr Vineyards & Wines, Karl Lawrence Cellars, Mi Sueno Winery, Renteria Wines, Ceja Vineyards, Sequoia Grove Vineyard and Two Wives.

“We are presenting guests an opportunity to try something that they perhaps have not tried before,” said event co-chair Ricardo Robles, President of La Reina Inc. a manufacturer of Mexican food products. “Wine can be fantastic with traditional favorites such as ceviche and even tacos. We are trying to introduce people to something new, elevating great Mexican food so that it is on par with great French or Italian cuisine.”

Several wonderful restaurants provided food samplings including East LA mainstays like Tila’s Kitchen, Tacos Baja, Homegirl Cafe and El Siete Mares. Rounding out the list are the soon to open Rivera Restaurant in downtown Los Angeles by renowned Chef John Rivera Sedlar, La Casita Mexicana in the city of Bell, Phlight in Whittier, palate food + wine by Chef Octavio Becerra, Cook’s Tortas, El Portal Yucatan cuisine in Pasadena, and chocolates by D’s Delights.

Proceeds from the event benefit AltaMed Health Services. AltaMed Health Services, a private nonprofit organization, is a major provider of health and human services in the Greater Los Angeles area and the largest Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in the State of California. The mission of AltaMed is to provide high quality, coordinated, comprehensive health and human services to the underserved in Southern California, with particular attention to Latino and multi-ethnic populations. AltaMed began as the East Los Angeles Barrio Free Clinic in 1969, a volunteer-staff storefront providing basic medical services. Today AltaMed’s service area extends beyond the immediately surrounding East Los Angeles area to the Southern California region. “*

CasaQ® Debuts New Line of Christmas Ornaments Geared towards US Latinos

“CasaQ, a San Jose-based Hispanic lifestyle company, will debut its exclusive Latin-themed ornament collection at the San Francisco International Gift Fair at the Moscone Convention Center from July 26-29, 2008.

Less than 8 months ago, first-time ornament designer Darlene Tenes created two hand-painted glass ornaments: “Pancho Claus,” a Santa riding on a piñata and “Sancho Snowman,” a guitar-toting snowman wearing a poncho and sombrero.

These premier glass creations got off to a quick start when the 2007 Latin GRAMMY Awards called and asked for them to be featured in their official celebrity gift baskets and have since received much press because of their fun and festive designs. They have been given as gifts at numerous celebrity driven events such as People en Español’s Christmas Party, CBS’ A Home for the Holidays TV Special and Andy Roddick’s Poker Tournament.

“We are excited CasaQ has decided to debut their impressive line of products at the San Francisco International Gift Fair”, said Aubin Wilson, show manager, “Buyers love coming to this market because of the fresh, exciting new products that they can’t find anywhere else and CasaQ is a great example of this.”

The CasaQ Ornament Collection includes exclusive designs such as the Virgin de Guadalupe, La Catrina, El Sombrero, La Piñata, and many more symbolic treasures that reflect the Hispanic culture. The collection was chosen out of 1200 exhibitors to be shown in the Distinctive Line division, a juried division representing a select group of the best and most unique products at the show.

The CasaQ Ornament Collection can be seen at www.casaq.com.

A film crew has set out to make an insiders’ guide to the legendary New York City club scene with its most famous gatekeeper, Trevor W., “starring” as their host.

Trevor has the power. He knows people. But more importantly (as Trevor points out), he knows people who know him. After mysteriously losing his job, Trevor fails to inform the film crew following him. He struggles to keep up appearances in front of the camera while his glamorous, jet-set “celebrity” lifestyle goes into an abrupt and awkward tailspin.

Trevor W. may have held power over many important people, but what’s a Doorman without a door?

Skewering the velvet rope circuit, this fictional documentary starring Lucas Akoskin features dozens of cameos by real-life boldface names including Peter Bogdanovich, Thom Filicia, and Amy Sacco.

Early on in his career, Lucas Akoskin (Trevor W.) worked as an actor in several Argentine hit television shows. As producer he won a prestigious “Fundacion Huesped” award for his involvement in the hugely popular sporting event, “Futbol Por La Vida” which was broadcast live. In addition to developing THE DOORMAN with creator Wayne Price, Akoskin has also produced and Directed a number of promotional video spots for Italian laptop company Flybook and Renova Black a high end personal products company from Portugal. Last year, he was instrumental in setting up the The Costantini Latin American Film Fund in partnership with the Weinstein Company. Films already in various stages of production include “Cronicas de una Fuga” from director Adrian Caetano; “La Misma Luna” from Patricia Riggen; “Tropa de

Elite” from writer Braulio Mantovani (”City of God”) and director Jose Padilha. Akoskin recently produced “Terra Shorts” a series of short films for Terra Networks. Actors involved include Alice Braga, Jose Maria Jazpik, Iliana Fox, Angie Cepeda, Gaston Pauls and Akoskin himself.

“Rubiela García gently kneads the corn-flour dough by hand, adding the occasional splash of water. “She has to do it with her hands because it’s the only way she can feel that it’s exactly how it should be,” explains her husband, Orlando Moreno.

By the time this weekend rolls around, García will have made enough dough to fashion about 800 empanadas. She’ll also have made several hundred tamales tolimenses, another specialty of her Colombian homeland. She and Moreno will sell them Saturday and Sunday at the annual Fiesta in Florissant, which highlights the cuisines and cultures of countries throughout South and Central America. “*
