GordonsJewelers Honors Quinceaneras With Lasting Gifts of Fine Jewelry

“In Hispanic communities, the Quince Anos celebrates a young lady’s fifteenth birthday, signifying her passage from childhood to adulthood. Such an important occasion deserves a lasting gift that she’ll always remember. Gordon’s Jewelers, one of America’s most trusted names in fine jewelry, offers an extensive selection of gold and sterling silver jewelry to celebrate this special event.
“Jewelry is the traditional gift for the Quinceanera,” said Steve Larkin, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing and eCommerce Officer at Zale Corporation, Gordon’s Jewelers parent company. “Gordon’s Jewelers has the perfect gifts that she’ll treasure for the rest of her life.”
The traditional gifts given for Quince Anos each have a special meaning.
Rings or bracelets are given to symbolize the never-ending circle of life and the never-ending cycle of womanhood. Gordon’s offers dozens of rings and bracelets, many adorned with the girl’s birthstone, such as a sterling silver bracelet inset with diamonds.
Earrings are given to remind the Quinceanera to keep her ears in tune to the word of God and the world around her. Gordon’s gold circle drop earrings with diamond accents or graduated Journey opal drop earrings represent how love grows stronger over time.
A pendant or rosary may be given to the Quinceanera as a symbol of her faith. Gordon’s guardian angel cameo pendant on a gold chain is engraved with the words “Watch over and guide me.” Gordon’s gold rosary necklace mixes white and yellow gold in a diamond cut finish.
“Fine jewelry makes every young woman feel special and grown-up,” added Larkin. “So to receive a piece of jewelry on her fifteenth birthday is one of the most beloved moments for a Quinceanera.”
The Quinceanera Collection is available at www.gordonsjewelers.com. Spanish-speaking customer service representatives are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-888-467-3661. “

Isabella Wall designated Representative of the Secretary of State of Tourism of Dominican Republic

The assignment
To create initiatives and platforms to promote the  Dominican Republic as a vacation destination and a  productions location for the television and film  industries.    Born and raised in the Dominican Republic and now  based out of Los Angeles, Isabella is a member of the  Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, a writer,  actress and entrepreneur. Her acting credits include ER,  Nip Tuck and Days Of Our Lives.     In recent years Isabella realized the need for family  encouragement in the lives of teenage girls and created  an advocate platform for quinceañeras, the Latina  coming of age celebration of the fifteenth birthday,  hugely popular among Hispanics in the US including  Mexicans and Dominican-Americans.     Isabella became the spokesperson for the quinceañera  industry when she was named “Fairy Godmother of  quinceañeras” by the Latin media and has been  compared to Ann Landers for Hispanic girls. Her  mission, promoting that this once in a lifetime event is a  trans-cultural celebration in the United States and an  important way to bring families together.

Isabella is the co-author along with husband Marty Wall, of “Chasing Rubi, The truth about Porfirio Rubirosa, the last playboy”; the first English published biography about the Dominican playboy-diplomat rumored to have been Ian Fleming’s inspiration for James Bond, recently featured on History Channel international and soon to be turned into a movie. www.ChasingRubi.com    In her book, Isabella describes the Dominican Republic as “the new St. Bart, where one sometimes can see the likes of Bill Clinton, Oscar De La Renta, Julio Iglesias, Brad and Angelina, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Oscar de la Hoya and Sammy Sosa, strolling about the beautiful beaches, where tourism and luxury home construction are booming. Wealthy Americans are flocking there in droves because, though the Caribbean remains crystal blue as it always was, the sunsets are as stunning as ever, and the lush tropical landscape still beckons”.   In Isabella’s opinion, “discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, the island of Hispaniola AKA Quisqueya by the native Taino Indians, is still not completely uncovered. There are coves still hidden and white foamy waves that look more like lazy fluffy feathered seagulls, lying along the sandy shores, that need to be exposed. The dollar still goes a long way in this heavenly paradise and we are looking forward to shooting many important movie scenes that may announce to the world, “Just call us the DR, that’s who we are”.

A Quinceañera Election Party

“The political story of the moment is the Latino vote. As presidential candidates John McCain (R-AZ) and Barack Obama (D-IL) present their cases to the leading Latino advocacy groups, the message everywhere is about how pivotal the Latino vote will be this year. It almost feels like a quinceañera party for Latinos—where we will “come of age” as voters in the United States.”*

Time is the key to planning quinceañera

Tags: ,

““It was something planned four days in advance, and I think the only nice thing was the cake,” says Lorena Reyes, laughing about the improvised celebration for her 15th birthday. “One of my aunts made the dress in El Salvador, and when I saw it, I thought it was a joke. But it was too late to get another one because the party was the following day.”

Reyes, now 24, appeared before her quinceañera guests dressed in an “entirely covered, from neck to feet” gown, that had very little to do with her personality and looked nothing like the princess dresses she now offers to her customers.

At the small business set up in her home near Beechnut and Dairy Ashford, Reyes provides counseling to girls ready for their quinceañera, their formal presentation to their communities as young women, which is a tradition rooted in Latino culture.”*

Hispanic Meeting & Event Planning Online Directory Launches - The Latino Speakers Bureau announced the launch of their Hispanic Meeting & Event Planning Online Directory, designed to serve the needs of this industry with speakers, professional services and small business resources that are valuable to their event success.

Tags: , ,

A new Hispanic Event Planning Online Directory was launched this week to serve meeting and event planners with a major focus on small businesses and the Hispanic market. LatinoSpeakersBureau.com brings together Hispanic vendors and professionals often unseen and overlooked that are valuable to Meeting & Event Planners who seek diversity resources in their online searches.

Latino Speakers Bureau founder, Leonor McCall-Rodriguez, built the website directory with the needs of event and meeting professionals in mind, adding listings of keynote speakers, meeting locations and a wider variety of resources in a one-stop-shop online tool geared to showcase not only Hispanic speakers, but a broader offering of women and minority-owned small businesses.

“After 6 years of work with the Speakers Bureau and out in the Hispanic business community, we met many vendors who were not connecting with event planners and meeting professionals, so we did the same thing we did with the Bureau: we created our own online solution”, said McCall-Rodriguez, whose career spans the U.S. and Latin America with marketing and business development projects, including several Fortune 100 companies.

In this industry, she tackled the challenge of Hispanic speaking professionals to increase visibility, because they tend to operate as sole proprietorships or small businesses and compete against large scale general market bureaus. Visibility is critical in a market where speakers must highlight their programs, resumes and seminars in different languages before potential corporate, government, conference and non-profit event planners. Today, the Latino Speakers Bureau group boasts multiple sites and includes successful Latinos who travel the world with their best sellers and keynotes. Among them are Jimmy Cabrera, Joachim de Posada, Dr. Jo Ann Pina, Victor Antonio Gonzalez, Simon Silva, Maria Marin and David Gonzalez.

On LatinoSpeakersBureau.com, other small businesses and professionals such as photographers, lawyers, chefs, producers, emcees and comedians will now be part of the online directory. The new portal includes an Event calendar, Articles page, and a Classifieds section, sure to grow as minority businesses build their ads for the event and meeting industry. It has aroused a lot of interest in other countries, where event planners and speakers see this as a business networking opportunity. It is also expected to attract corporate advertisers who offer travel, production services and event locations.

One category that has aroused interest because of its cultural twist is Weddings & Quinceañeras, that will showcase professionals and services related to these life events, including culturally relevant seminars for young women and couples from Hispanic professionals.

The site will also allow McCall-Rodriguez to showcase many non-profits that constantly reach out to the Latino Speakers Bureau, including those that provide Spanish assisted services for the community across the U.S.. “One of the things I love the most about America is our volunteer spirit and non-profit activity. Our Bureau gives back to our community by providing visibility to non-profits and their causes”, she explains.

Leonor concluded, “When you see a market need, you can wait for the market to solve it, or jump in and develop your own. We feel this one was long overdue.”

Mexico City’s mass quinceañera makes princesses

“Some girls are born princesses. Others have to scrape for their tiaras. But when they get their day — as about 300 Mexican girls did this weekend — they relish it to the fullest.

They were part of a massive quinceañera celebration, the traditional coming-out party for Mexican girls turning 15. Dressed in colorful gowns and with hair coiffed like movie stars, the girls danced, shrieked and embraced on a stage in the capital’s main plaza.

Most of the girls come from poor families and typically would be left wanting in a ritual that illustrates the gap between Mexico’s haves and have-nots.”*

CIMS » De Un Chico a Un Hombre: Boys Now Celebrate “Mis Quince Años”

Filed under [ Hispanic News ]
Tags: , ,

“Fifteen-year-old Hispanic girls have celebrated their faith and their transition into womanhood with elaborate Quinceañeras since 500 BC, when Aztec girls were given the instruction and responsibilities of womanhood. Over the centuries, the Quinceañera has become both an enormously significant rite of passage and a tremendous honor, one that Hispanic girls today anticipate with pride and happiness. And now, Hispanic boys are embracing the male version as a celebration of faith and manhood.

Though nowhere near as common as the Quinceañera, the Quinceañero is gaining in popularity and celebrated with equal gusto! While some boys still see it as strictly a girl’s domain, many boys see their Quinceañero as a testament to their faith, their entry into adulthood and an opportunity to share in a joyful Hispanic tradition. Your son may approach you with the idea, which certainly indicates he’s interested, or you may ask him not long after his 14th birthday if he’d like to celebrate his 15th birthday with a Quinceañero. If he declines, you should respect his choice.

When your son has decided on a Quince, you should start planning at least six months before the event. More and more parents are lavishing their sons with parties, limousines, speeches – everything except the dress—so planning takes some time. Needless to say, some customs need revision to be male-oriented.”*

CIMS » Take A Swing At Having Fun With Your Quince Fiesta Piñata

Tags:

“A beloved tradition at parties and celebrations for centuries, the humble piñata is starting to come back in a big way as a fun fiesta activity. And it’s not just for kids this time – the modern piñata is a work of art that’s fun for everyone.

Piñatas, like so many childhood institutions, have grown ever more sophisticated with the times. Many style-conscious piñata makers have created piñata models that celebrate fashion and glamour, with designs ranging from dragons to butterflies. One piñata was even built to resemble the Eiffel Tower in Paris!

For the Quinceañera, the piñata is a way to celebrate your heritage while letting guests enjoy some knock ‘em, sock ‘em fun at the same time.”*

New! First and Only Quinceañera Planner and Keepsake is Every Girl’s Complete Guide to Planning the Perfect Quinceañera

Tags: ,

“William H. Sadlier, Inc., of New York has published the Quinceañera Planner and Keepsake—every girl’s complete guide to planning the perfect quinceañera. This fun and feminine planner and keepsake is truly the first of its kind! Designed like today’s must-have wedding planners, the Quinceañera Planner and Keepsake offers essential information and allows young women to collaborate with family members in preparing for this much-anticipated tradition in a way that suits their unique styles and needs.

The quinceañera is an increasingly popular cultural celebration for Latina girls in the United States. Each year in the United States, 400,000 Latina girls turn 15 and many will commemorate this important birthday with a quinceañera—a celebration of the young woman and a recognition of her journey from childhood to maturity. The celebration highlights God, family, friends, music, food, and dance, and includes a ceremony and reception that can be as important, and as expensive, as the average wedding.

Sadlier’s Quinceañera Planner and Keepsake includes information about the history of quinceañera, a getting started section, and sections for planning both a ceremony and a reception or fiesta. While it recognizes the material aspects of the quinceañera, the planner and keepsake emphasizes the spiritual aspects of this celebration, and offers opportunities for the quinceañera to reflect on what it means to be a mature, gracious, and celebrated young woman. The Quinceanera Planner and Keepsake also includes helpful planning charts, timelines, checklists, and invaluable tips along the way.

While the costs for the quinceañera may be a large family investment, this planner and keepsake is a must-have to keep costs and plans in order and ensure a successful and memorable event. It is a true value at $24.99 and also makes a perfect gift. It is available for sale at www.planyourquince.com.

“Three new original series that spotlight the unique world of young Latinos, their dreams, music and issues debut this month on MTV Tr3s (www.mtvtr3s.com/) it was announced today. Beginning January 7th MTV Tr3s viewers will be treated to a new season of the hit series “Quiero Mis Quinces,” get a shot at becoming television programmers in “Music My Guey” and see some of their realities reflected in “Tr3s Docs.”

“The lives of young Latinos are exciting, trend-setting and complex and MTV Tr3s is thrilled to begin the new year with expanded programming options that celebrate and reflect our audience,” said Lily Neumeyer, Vice President of Programming and Production, MTV Tr3s. “Through research and an on-going dialogue, our audience has told us they are seeking programming that highlights what Latinos have in common with each other, the ways Latinos are different from non-Latinos and the nuances and differences between Latino countries of origin. MTV Tr3s has it all.”

Hit Series Returns
MTV Tr3s audience favorite “Quiero Mis Quinces,” is back and better than ever on Mondays at 4:00 PM starting January 7th. The second season of the weekly show that documents the elaborate quinceañera parties that are a coming-out tradition when Latinas turn 15 captures all excitement, nerves, temper tantrums, and more of planning a dream party.

Featured in season two of “Quiero Mis Quinces” are Avelina y Alejandra, twins who make for double excitement, especially when their limo is pulled over by the police on the way to their party; Nicole Luis, a model and actress who has to live up to the perfect expectations her friends and family have of her; Valentina, a theatre student who brings new drama to the art of planning her quinceañera; the ever popular Vittoria who wants a Las Vegas-style party; Ana Gabriela who decides to strut her unknown talents as a super model as part of her celebration; and Irian, a young rocker who decides that black is the perfect color for her quinces.

Beyond the on-air action, MTV Tr3s is inviting young Latinas to share their party plans on the new community site 15.mtvtr3s.com, a social network created for 14-16 year old Latinas looking to connect with others girls just like them. Quinces members can create their own profiles and select party ‘preferences’ by uploading photos or videos of the cakes, venues and outfits they hope to have at their big event. They can also check out who else is planning a quince in their area, and enter forums with other members to share party planning tips. 15.mtvtr3s.com provides members with a range of interactive features to choose from, including voting for the Party of the Week, ‘snagging’ preferred user photos to add to one’s own profile, and commenting within the Quinces community.

15.mtvtr3s.com is one of hundreds of unique online communities MTV Networks has created for young people with shared experiences, including mysupersweet16.com that has 30,000 registered viewers more than 1.1MM visitors, more than 14MM page views and where 45,000 pictures have been uploaded.

Viewers Take Control and Test Their Knowledge
Young Latinos are especially passionate about their music and videos as members of the MTV Tr3s Cooltura panel, a group of 100 young Latinos that advises MTV Tr3s on trends, programming and issues, told the channel. However, it’s not only watching videos that’s important to young Latinos, they said. They want viewer participation experiences that they can use as “social currency,” experiences that allow them to express and share why they love the artists and the music they do, in a highly individualized way. In response to this feedback, MTV Tr3s is giving viewers the power to control what they want to see and hear on the channel through the development of customized video blocks on the new half-hour show “Music My Guey” (Music My Way) which premieres on Tuesday, January 8th at 3:30 PM

“Music My Guey” empowers fans with an opportunity to program a 30-minute block on MTV Tr3s however they see fit. Viewers first log onto playlist.mtvtr3s.com, upload their personal photo and populate a playlist of ten song titles by choosing MTV Tr3s recommended tracks, or by inputting their own choices. Additionally, users can comment on why each track they have selected matters to them. Upon review and approval of the list, MTV Tr3s then develops a half-hour video block based on the selections and features the fan’s picture on-air throughout the entire video block. The playlists selected to appear during the video block will also be spotlighted on the homepage of playlist.mtvtr3s.com.

How much viewers know about their favorite artists and videos will be tested on the new interactive show “Tr3s or False,” which airs weekdays starting January 14th at 6:30 PM.

“Tr3s or False,” will display artist, video, and trivia questions, and gives viewers 30 seconds to answer the questions correctly via their cell phones through SMS technology. Each time a viewer answers a question correctly, they will be automatically entered into a sweepstakes - so the more they play and answer correctly, the better chance they have to win and earn points. Winners will be picked at random to receive prizes like an mp3 player, apparel, movie/ concert tickets, gift certificates and more. At the end of every show, an on-air score board will reveal the top 10 “Tr3s or False,” viewer experts based on the points they earn by answering correctly.

Taking on Issues that Matter
Latino youth are unique not only in their music preferences and rites of passage, but also in the issues they face, according to Cooltura panelists. For example, many young Latinos are obligated to take on the role of cultural and linguistic translators for their families, negotiating everything from mortgage rates to representing the family in court. Obesity together with body image is a particularly difficult issue for young Latinas, they say.

In response to the Cooltura feedback, MTV Tr3s has created “Tr3s Docs,” a documentary destination that showcases the best of MTV News and Docs with a special emphasis on experiences, characters and issues that matter most to young Latinos. Presented by MTV Tr3s VJs Carlos Santos and Karli Henriquez, “Tr3s Docs” will tackle the pressure of shouldering adult responsibilities, being overweight and the universal ups and downs of graduating high school in its premiere season and will encourage viewers to comment about their own stories at mtvthink.com. Documentaries to be featured on “Tr3s Docs” are:

True Life: Supporting My Family on January 19th at 5 PM — Whether caused by a parent’s untimely death, serious illness or abandonment, each year many young people suddenly find themselves responsible for the welfare of their younger siblings. In this episode of True Life, viewers follow two young women who are struggling to support their families. Will they find a way to feed, clothe and house their siblings? Or will their families fall apart?

“True Life: I’m a High School Senior” on January 26th at 5 PM — From prom to final exams, prank day to graduation day, senior year is a study in contrasts. For many young people it’s like a joyride on a bumpy road as serious considerations about life beyond the secure four walls of high school jockey for attention with concerns about finding the absolute best dress for prom. In this episode of True Life, viewers follow three young people living it up during their last semester of high school. Will they be able to smoothly navigate their way to the aisle on graduation day or will they succumb to senioritis and stumble along the way?

“Return To Fat Camp” on February 2nd at 5 PM — For overweight teenagers trying to “fit in” can seem almost impossible—from getting teased at school to participating in sports, many of these kids find it hard just to feel ‘normal’. They dream of losing weight, looking good and becoming popular and at “Fat Camp” that’s exactly what happens even if they don’t lose a pound! Through first person encounters, “Return to Fat Camp explores the lives of five young people who are battling their weight while having the time of their lives and finally fitting in at a weight loss camp.

“Quiero Mis Quinces,” “Music My Guey” “Tr3s or False,” and “Tr3s Docs” join other hit MTV Tr3s programs such as “Mi TRL” hosted by Carlos Santos, “Sucker Free Latino” hosted by L.Boogs and the recently introduced “Karlifornia” hosted by Karli Henriquez. Music programming is at the core of MTV Tr3s and the channel features hitmakers, emerging artists and new sounds that resonate with young U.S. Latinos and celebrate their hybrid identity and culture.

Since launching in September 2006, MTV Tr3s has become the most widely-distributed TV network dedicated to superserving today’s bicultural Latino youth and is currently seen in 6.2 million Hispanic TV households and 31.9 million total TV households. “*

A Mexican Sweet 15 – a bluejean girl becomes a woman - In the Mexican desert, full of hardship and dust, the traditional quinceañera is a chance to be a princess for a day.

“The day of the quinceañera dawns raw and blustery, and clouds of dust scud along the main road of this quiet village. But outside the cinderblock church, and on the well-worn basketball court in the center of town, young girls are already threading long garlands of handmade blue paper flowers, and their older brothers are scaling ladders to stretch the strings overhead.

Today is Seraya Butron Rodriguez’s 15th birthday, and like so many young Latin American girls, she’s been dreaming of her quinceañera, or “sweet 15″ party, for as long as she can remember. Part sacred, part secular, the quinceañera marks the entrance of a young woman into adult society, and is thought to mix indigenous traditions with those of Spanish Catholic missionaries.”*
