More Kinky Than Ever Sonic360 Announces the Release of Rarities, a Collection of Remixes and Live Tunes by Multiple GrammyR Nominee Mexican Band Kinky

Tags: , , , ,

“What more perfect way to usher the summer season than with a good dose of KINKY as Sonic360 releases RARITIES on June 19th, 2007, a collection of remixes, live and previously unreleased songs by the Monterrey band that brought the contagious “Mas” into the world.

RARITIES was originally put out in the UK as a limited edition of 750 hand numbered copies, just for Kinky’s UK fans, but overwhelming positive feedback from the European press has prompted the band and Sonic360 to launch the new full scale release in the US and Canada.

“We love making records, writing songs and playing music,” says singer Gilberto Cerezo. “Since there are five of us in the band and we do everything as a team, it’s hard to make one record that shows off everything we can do. That’s why we decided to put out RARITIES. It’s a little of this and a little of that: projects we’ve been doing outside the albums, covers of songs by artists we admire, songs written for movies, people doing remixes and adding their flavor to the Kinky idea. There are also a few live tracks, because the live shows are the most important thing we do.”

Like all their albums, RARITIES blends sounds that are contemporary and traditional, dynamic and contemplative, innovative and yet strangely familiar. The album includes new live favorite “Coqueta,” which made a guest appearance on Diez, a tribute album to Mexico’s Norteno band Intocable; and the much-loved “Selva Lombardi,” which was originally written for the band’s sophomore album Atlas.

The record also includes KINKY’s barnstorming cover of Tito Puente’s iconic hymn “Oye Como Va” (extended mix), which was featured on the hit movie MAN ON FIRE. “It was a challenge because Tito Puente and Santana already have strong versions of the song,” Cerezo comments. “Our take is more electronic, more rock. We also included a chilled out Lazyboy remix of the song.” Other remix artists on RARITIES include: Money Mark (”Presidente”), Toy Selectah (Control Machete), a reggaeton innovator who brings a new energy to “Mas” and a mash up of “Soun Tha Mi Primer Amor” by Norteno Collective’s Bostich that blends hip hop, house and Norteno flavors.

RARITIES concludes with three live recordings: “Mas,” “The Headphonist,” and “Sol.” Kinky’s Ulises Lozano explains, “There was no crowd, but it was all live. We did older songs because music changes as you play it live; songs pick up other flavors after you’ve played them a while.”

Kinky spent years honing their highly original sound, a fusion of Latin Rhythms, Mexican regional music, electronica and rock’n'roll, in their hometown of Monterrey, in Northern Mexico. They gave Chris Allison, (Coldplay, Beta Band), a three song demo presented on a lovely cassette tape in the winter of 1999 while he was producing Plastilina Mosh. Six months later he signed them to his Sonic360 label and they were off and running. The five-man band - Gilberto Cerezo (vocals, guitar), Ulises Lozano (keyboards), Carlos Chairez (lead guitar), Cesar Pliego (bass) and Omar Gongora (drums) - exploded onto the international scene in the summer of 2000. Since 2002, the band has recorded three eclectic albums - Kinky (2002), Atlas (2003) and Reina (2006) - been nominated for three Grammy’s(R) , composed music for films and played countless gigs all over the planet in front of hundreds of thousands, inducing dance floor hysteria and winning legions of enthusiastic fans.

Kinky is currently touring and available for interviews; a special VIP industry only showcase will be announced shortly. Please contact us (info below) for guest list, date and venue information.

The Brown Note Latin Rock Project Presents Music for Smart PEOPLE: Volumen Cero

Tags: , , , ,

“On Saturday May 26, 2007 Latin Alt Rockers, Volumen Cero will headline for The Brown Note Latin Rock Project’s debut concert: Music for Smart PEOPLE. Joining Volumen Cero will be special guests Los Abandoned and Luminous Family Trust.

Fervent Rockera, Ann Blankenship, developed The Brown Note Latin Rock Project to serve as a vehicle for promoting innovative Latin rock music and for fostering collaborations among forward thinking rock musicians who are continually expanding and exploring the possibilities of rock and of traditional Latin music. Far from being strictly a concert, Brown Note is a think tank, brain trust and artistic convergence of like-minded souls.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Although belonging to a family of accomplished musicians including the legendary jazz musician Charles Mingus, Ann Blankenship had never played an instrument until 1999 when she began drumming with the Brazilian cultural arts group. “I figured that I had to start playing some kind of instrument so that my family wouldn’t think that I was adopted!”

Since 1999 Ms. Blankenship has been highly active in supporting her local arts community and in 2002 she was asked to join the Carnaval San Francisco Advisory Board. Participation in Carnaval exposed her to the many musical traditions of the Americas and fed up with the rather homogenous sounds of mainstream American pop she began venturing beyond musical borders to discover what else was happening musically throughout the Americas.

Ann’s musical journey soon led her to discover Latin Alternative Rock. “I just heard a riff from Plastilina Mosh’s “Te Lo Juro Por Madonna” and I was hooked –for LIFE! For the first time in about 20 years I’ve actually begun buying music regularly and attending concerts. And soon I began thinking of ways to support this movement of really innovative musicians.” And thus, Brown Note was born.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
VOLUMEN CERO
Formed in the late 90’s out of the musical metropolis of Miami Volumen Cero emerged to spearhead the Latin rock movement in their hometown. Their singular sound picked up and reinvented from Brit post-punk bands and power-pop rockers quickly set them apart from their contemporaries. special on the band called A Todo Volumen. With the release of their latest bilingual album Estelar, the Volumen Cero universe is as immense and neverending as ever, and the band hops from star to star and from possibility to possibility.

LOS ABANDONED
Over the past four years, Los Abandoned have taken over the Los Angeles scene with their bilingual blend of hooky, high-energy pop/rock and retro sounds. Their groundbreaking self-produced/released EPs and their no-holds-barred live shows have earned them accolades in the press and won them space in the hearts of thousands of fans.

LUMINOUS FAMILY TRUST
What do you get when mixing one part Swedish punk guitar, one part New Orleans trombone, one part Mexican trumpet, one part Motown bass, one wallop of jazz drum kit, a dab of high-fat keyboards and add a taste of Brazilian percussion??? A mouthwatering serving of Luminous Family Trust! The brass-heavy, rhythm-focused seven-piece band from Oakland, California, was formed with the goal to create an all-inclusive, dance and freak out-happy atmosphere with their punkified world music.

After Landing Airplay On Such Leading Tastemaker Stations as KCRW (Los Angeles), KEXP (Seattle), and KUT (Austin) for their Song “Don’t Let Go” from the Soundtrack to the Box Office Hit “La Mujer de Mi Hermano,’ Pacha Massive Gears Up for the Release of Full Length Debut All Good Things

First Single “Don’t Let Go” Featured in NBC “Las Vegas’ Last Week

Winners of the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) Battle of the Bands, the Bronx-based Pacha Massive Have Shared the Stage With Artists Like Ozomatli, Aterciopelados, Sidestepper, and Yerba Buena

“Their songs are high-energy, funky Latin jams that combine Colombian cumbia, Afro-Cuban son, Jamaican reggae-dancehall and all manner of breakbeats, dub and drum-and-bass rhythms”
– NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Straight from the boogie-down Bronx, Nacional Records is proud to introduce its first U.S.-based signing, Pacha Massive. Pacha Massive (from “Pachamama’ meaning “Mother Earth”), is the creative collaboration between Dominican-born Nova (keys / guitar/ writer/ producer) and Colombian-born Maya (writer/bass). The result is a funky fusion of traditional Latin rhythms like Colombian cumbia, Dominican palo, reggae, dancehall, dub and electronica sure to get the pachanga fired up.

The duo met in New York while working on a project with Ivan Benavides (Sidestepper, Bloque, Carlos Vives) where a creative collaboration between the two led to the formation of Pacha Massive in 2005. Pacha Massive landed an impressive first gig opening for Colombian rockers Aterciopelados at Madison Square Garden and has since gone on to share the stage with artists like Ozomatli, Sidestepper, and Yerba Buena. After winning the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) Battle of the Bands contest (previous winners include Kinky and Los Abandoned who have both gone on to launch successful careers) the duo caught the attention of Nacional Records. Pacha Massive’s infectious track “Don’t Let Go” was featured last year on the Nacional Records soundtrack to the box-office hit “La Mujer de Mi Hermano,” and landed airplay on such leading tastemaker stations as Indie 103.1 (Los Angeles), KCRW (Los Angeles), KEXP (Seattle), and KUT (Austin). The new album “All Good Things’ is already being hotly anticipated, with first single “Don’t Let Go” recently selected by NBC to air in the popular show “Las Vegas’ last week.

Nova’s Dominican roots exposed him to a lot of traditional music like palo in addition to music from England and the U.S. played on Dominican radio. His passion for music began early, and as a youth he began building instruments out of whatever he could find using cans for drums, 2 X 4’s, rubber bands, etc. Nova recalls “When I came to the U.S. I got my first instrument on my 15th birthday, a drum set, and as the years passed I picked up guitar, bass, keys, percussion and finally the instrument that allowed me to solidify my ideas in a flexible and efficient way”¦.a Mac.” Nova describes his musical influences not necessarily as musicians, but rather as people “who have influenced me in the way I make music” citing Bruce Lee, Benjamin Franklin and Leonardo DaVinci as “people who had a bigger perspective and were more holistic in their craft”.

Maya was born in Colombia and raised in NYC’s Washington Heights. Her love of music also started at an early age with the violin and later became a career choice when she went to Cuba after graduating to study double bass. Her musical influences range from classical, salsa, bolero and traditional Colombian folklore to reggae, house and artists like Manu Chao, Hector Lavoe and Sidestepper.

“All Good Things” the group’s first album, will be released on February 20th, and is self-produced by Nova with additional mixing in Monterrey, Mexico by Alejandro Rosso of platinum-selling Mexican act Plastilina Mosh. For Nova, a seasoned musician who has played with acts like New York reggae-latin fusion band King Chango, self-producing was a positive experience “because no one knows your material better than yourself and you have the freedom to experiment until you stumble upon what you were looking for.” According to Maya, “our first album has a very personal sound to it. Written by both of us and being produced by Nova, it has a very Pacha sound”. Nova adds, “most songs deal with the struggles of everyday life, perseverance and those hardships we all go through to achieve our dreams”.

“Camilo Lara leads a double life in the Mexican music industry.

By day he’s the successful top executive of one of his country’s leading record labels, EMI Mexico, known for discovering and developing acts that get both big sales (the teeny-bopper group RBD) and critical raves (alt-rockers Plastilina Mosh).

But come most Friday nights, Lara sheds the white-collar persona and takes on the character of his own teenage dreams, the one-man musical project grandiosely dubbed the Mexican Institute of Sound.”

The Network’s content is predominantly in English, targeting bilingual Latino youth. Each week, LATV has a live in-studio audience. Presently, LATV is the only network airing on basic cable in Los Angeles that reaches the highly sought-after bicultural demographic. A favorite of national advertisers, LATV’s sponsors include Verizon, AT&T, McDonald’s, VW, Target Stores, and many others.

“LATV Live” recently won an Imagen Award for “Best Television Variety Special’, beating out programming from networks like SiTV and Fox Deportes en Espanol. The Awards, presented in 17 categories by the Imagen Foundation, were established in 1985 to encourage and recognize the positive portrayal of Latinos in all media, and to increase Latino representation at all levels of the entertainment industry. LATV had the greatest presence of any network in the category, with nominations for both “LATV Live” and also “Mex 2 The Max.”
