“Univision Radio, a division of Univision Communications Inc. and the leading Spanish-language radio broadcaster in the United States, joins forces again with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital(R) through the network’s Promesa y Esperanza (Promise and Hope) broadcast on February 7 and 8.

The Spanish-language radio fundraiser helps raise money and awareness in Latino communities for children who are battling cancer and other diseases at St. Jude, the premier pediatric cancer research center.

“At Univision, and at each of the local stations in the Univision Radio network, we are proud of the role we play for Hispanics in the U.S.,” said Monica Rabassa, VP Marketing, Corporate Communications & Public Affairs of Univision Radio. “Our work with St. Jude is another example of our commitment to our communities. The amazing response of our staff and listeners since we started our partnership 10 years ago demonstrates the importance of the St. Jude message of hope.”

This year, for the first time, Univision Radio Puerto Rico is joining in the effort to support St. Jude. In addition to Puerto Rico, Univision Radio will support Promesa y Esperanza through several of its local radio stations in Albuquerque, Dallas, El Paso, Fresno, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, McAllen, Miami, New York, San Antonio, San Diego and San Francisco. Univision Radio will also support the event through its syndicated radio programming, Recuerdo, RadioCadena Univision, and El Piolin por la Manana, in more than 20 markets.

“We are very fortunate to have the support from Univision Radio and the Hispanic community to ensure that no child is ever turned away from receiving treatment because of a family’s inability to pay,” said John P. Moses, Chief Executive Officer of ALSAC, the fundraising organization of St. Jude. “We want the community to know that every donation, even as little as $20 a month, helps make a difference in saving a child’s life at St. Jude.”

More than 85 cents of every dollar St. Jude receives goes directly to research and treatment. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance. The hospital’s daily operating costs are nearly $1.3 million, which are primarily covered by public contributions.

Opened in 1962, St. Jude freely shares its research findings with hospitals everywhere.

St. Jude’s International Outreach Program shares its expertise and knowledge with partner countries around the world, including Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Venezuela.”*

“When the Pizza Patron Inc. chain signed L.A.-based Hispanic radio star Piolin as a pitchman, it was a declaration of war for a slice of the Latino pizza-buying market.

Dallas-based Pizza Patron only has two of its 70 stores in Los Angeles, but three more are under construction and there are plans for others in the works. The chain will not only be competing with La Pizza Loca Inc., based in Santa Fe Springs and with 44 stores in the L.A. area, but with large chains such as Little Caesars, Pizza Hut and Domino’s.”*

Brother Introduces Revolutionary Ink Jet Based Garment Print to Latino Market

“Brother International Corporation’s Industrial Products Division, a global leader in the industrial sewing market, launches a remarkable new ink jet garment printer in the Latino market to reveal its latest technology to Latino business owners in the textile industry and raise awareness of this new technology, the GT-541 delivers better performance and productivity in the screen printing industry.

The Brother GT-541 uses ink jet technology that prints on many garments in high quality color directly from a computer. The GT-541 marks the progression from screen printing technologies to a cleaner, faster, and more productive way to imprint images on garments. This ink jet garment printer is as simple to operate as a desktop printer, can network with multiple units, and delivers great print quality. The investment for printing can be as low as .50 cents for the ink and $1 to $2 for the t-shirt, which can be sold at market rate from $15-$30.

The GT-541 is faster and less expensive to operate than traditional screen printing machines because there is no set-up, tear-down, clean-up, screens, squeegees, or pallet adhesive. The GT-541 water based ink can be cured by a standard heat press, eliminating the need to purchase a conveyor dryer, and significantly reducing operating space requirements.

“The industry is literally lining up to bring the GT-541 into their businesses,” said Peter Holland, Senior Director. “Brother is the only manufacturer developing this technology that has field tested their printer for over one year at embroidery and screen printing businesses. We placed twenty-nine units and imprinted more than 100,000 shirts in a real-world setting to make sure we delivered the quality and durability we projected.”

Brother’s GT-541 concludes its debut at key Latino Heritage Month events as part of a test market introduction to the US Latino market, it will participate in Univision Radio’s Risas y Ritmo (Laughter and Music) hosted by renowned Spanish DJ “Piolin” Sotelo, Girls Night Out hosted by Rocio Sandoval “Peligrosa,” at the Fiestas Patrias event at the Los Angeles Coliseum and Sports Arena, the LA County Fair at the Pomona Fairgrounds, and will culminate at the National Latino Congreso.

“We want to close the gap in technology among Latino screen printers and introduce the latest technology to people who aspire to opening their own business,” said Fernando Padilla owner of Stitch City, a Brother International distributor in Southern California. “We are introducing this new technology as part of a test market to give the Latino Textile industry – and the community at large – an introduction of the businesses possibilities of owning the GT-541 a technology that is more efficient and less expensive to operate than traditional screen printing and that is currently revolutionizing the costly screen printing industry.”

Brother offers a full line of industrial sewing and embroidery machines, software, accessories, parts (PAS Store) and training from the single head to multi-head models. The company is recognized for its high-quality, state-of-the-art machines and accessories – offering ease-of-use and flexibility at competitive prices.

Piolín’s progress - He rallied Latino listeners to march for immigration reform; now he’s behind a push for citizenship.

“ITS HARD TO FIND MUCH to cheer in the demise of the Senates immigration reform bill, which fell apart when two-thirds of Republicans and one-third of Democrats refused to bring it to a vote. But there is one thin silver lining. Dismayed that the federal government has turned its back on millions of working immigrants, record numbers of legal residents ”” many mobilized by Spanish-language media ”” have been applying to become American citizens, claiming their rightful place in this country.

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, applications for citizenship from January through April were up 103% in the seven-county Los Angeles region ”” and 61% nationwide ”” over the same period in 2006. Some applicants have rushed to beat the increase in naturalization fees, from $400 to $675, set for July 30. Others have hurried to avoid having to take the new citizenship test, which will debut next year and is expected to be more difficult. “
