As part of its commitment to serving the Hispanic community, Colgate-Palmolive is promoting diabetes awareness and the importance of proper oral care during November's American Diabetes Month. With approximately 2.5 million Hispanic Americans suffering from diabetes or insulin resistance syndrome (pre-diabetes), proper oral care and oral health education have become increasingly important among this at-risk community.

To view the Multimedia News Release, go to: http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/colgate/39889/

The U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Oral Health describes the connection between good oral health and good overall health. Seeking proper dental care and maintaining good oral health are specifically vital to living well with diabetes. Emerging research supports a two-way relationship between diabetes and periodontitis (serious gum disease). Not only are people with diabetes more susceptible to serious gum disease, but if left untreated, serious gum disease may affect their ability to control blood glucose levels and potentially increase their risk of other complications of diabetes.

"As the global oral care leader in the Hispanic market, Colgate-Palmolive is dedicated providing oral health education to Hispanics managing diabetes and health professionals," said David Cardona, Marketing Director, U.S. Multicultural Marketing, Colgate-Palmolive. "Living with high blood sugar can take a toll on your entire body, including your teeth and gums. During American Diabetes Month, Colgate-Palmolive will continue to promote the association between oral health and diabetes, as well as the practical steps to help improve oral and possibly overall health."

As part of their multi-year educational collaboration, Colgate-Palmolive will continue to partner with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to help educate medical professionals and diabetes patients about the association between oral health and diabetes. As part of this year's outreach, Colgate-Palmolive will be targeting Hispanic Americans via in-store activities, educational materials and participation in the American Diabetes Association's 3rd Annual "Feria de Salud Por Tu Familia" ("Health Fair For Your Family"). This national, outdoor festival provides health screenings, cooking demonstrations and diabetes education.

Journalist and Colgate Total(R) spokesperson Myrka Dellanos, is supporting this educational initiative by publicly sharing her own experience living with diabetes and the importance of brushing daily with an anti-bacterial toothpaste, such as Colgate Total(R) toothpaste -- the brand most recommended by dentists.

"Diabetics don't have to take a step back; they can live life to the fullest," said Myrka. "Understanding the connection between oral health and diabetes and other health conditions is an important part of managing the condition. Daily brushing and flossing, regular dental check-ups and good blood glucose control are the best defenses against the oral complications of diabetes."

On behalf of Colgate Total(R), Myrka will be telling her story alongside Dr. R. Ivan Lugo, former President of the Hispanic Dental Association and a leading dental health advocate in the Hispanic community.

"The Latino population has the lowest incidence of dental visits when compared to any other ethnicity. This fact reinforces the importance of regular dental check-ups," Dr. Lugo said. "It is vital for diabetics to maintain good oral hygiene, floss regularly and brush twice a day with a toothpaste that has antibacterial benefits, like Colgate Total(R)."

About Colgate Total(R) Toothpaste
The unique formula of Colgate Total(R) toothpaste is clinically proven to actively fight germs for 12 hours. Colgate Total(R) toothpaste has an antibacterial formula and is the first and only toothpaste both approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and accepted by the American Dental Association to fight gingivitis. Using Colgate Total(R) toothpaste can promote better oral health and better oral health may help improve overall health. Colgate Total(R) is approved by the FDA to aid in the prevention of cavities, plaque and gingivitis. It has not been approved for the prevention or treatment of periodontitis or other diseases. Colgate Total is the number one toothpaste recommended most by dentists and hygienists. For more information about Colgate Total(R) toothpaste, visit www.ColgateTotal.com.

A report released today by the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund shows significant disappointment among Latino voters of the quality and amount of candidate outreach to the Latino community in the run-up to the 2009 Municipal Primary election. The analysis is the result of a series of small forums in each of the five boroughs held in late July with 102 randomly selected Latino voters.

Participants in the forums also highlighted the extreme challenge of finding affordable housing throughout New York City, particularly in the midst of a severe economic downturn and rising unemployment, citing poor city planning as the cause. In all boroughs, participants highlighted an ongoing need to improve the city’s public schooling, and invest more resources into community infrastructure such as green space and development.

Despite criticism and concern, the Latino voters participating in the forum series expressed hope for the future of New York City, and the future of its Latino residents. They also expressed great enthusiasm about participating in the upcoming elections, and for greater Latino participation in New York City elections.

The full report is available online at: http://www.naleo.org/downloads/NALEO_NYC_VoterForums_lo-res.pdf

About NALEO Educational Fund:
The NALEO Educational Fund is the nation's leading non-partisan, non-profit organization that facilitates full Latino participation in the American political process, from citizenship to public service.

"Over the past several years, 71% of the nation’s largest online and click-and-mortar banks have added foreign language content to their public websites, providing important product information and services in Spanish for the approximately 45 million Hispanic Americans living in the United States. The addition of this content should spark greater interest in these firms’ deposit products and services and offer opportunities for growth, a key objective given today’s challenging business conditions in the retail banking industry.

“Recent immigrants to the United States are often identified as ‘under-banked,’ which is unsurprising since most banking information and services have traditionally been offered almost exclusively in English,” explained Doug Miller, Senior Analyst for Banking and Cards at Corporate Insight. “As the Spanish-speaking population of this country has grown in both size and affluence, top retail banks have come to recognize the importance of serving this group through Spanish language site content, customer service support and account statements.”

In its latest study on Foreign Language Services, Corporate Insight was impressed by the efforts of a few banks that go beyond the basics to provide advanced web-based features to Spanish speakers.

* Bank of America and Citibank received top grades for their foreign language banking services and are currently the only banks to offer clients a fully functional Spanish private site.
* Wells Fargo and FifthThird are the only firms that offer Spanish Help Centers that assist customers with navigating the website and answer online banking questions.
* Wachovia and Wells Fargo offer Spanish language account applications, allowing consumers to open bank accounts online without having to navigate an English language form.
* Chase and Wachovia enable clients to change to their account statements to Spanish via a private site tool.
* E*TRADE Bank, National City and HSBC provide over-the-counter phone translation services for a vast number of foreign languages, though they do not offered dedicated non-English customer service numbers.

Corporate Insight currently provides a comprehensive selection of syndicated research to 90% of the top financial services companies within the Fortune 500, representing 70% of the brokerage industry and 60% of US banking assets. Its expert analysts compile highly detailed research audits that deliver a unique, firsthand understanding of financial product offerings and websites. All research is compiled through personal interaction with each website. To view the foreign language services report abstract please follow this link.

I had the opportunity to see the beginning of Camp Obama Colorado, a Latino community leadership training held in Denver and I have to say that I was impressed.

160 people had registered and although I don't know the final count of those actually attending the house was essentially packed. They were there from various parts of Colorado from all age groups to partake in what Obama's Latino team calls "helping local Latino leaders empower themselves with the skills to mobilize voters in their Colorado communities."

Now what impressed me was that this was actually physical action backed by Obama's money to work on a grassroots approach. Throughout my three years of covering Hispanic & Latino news, I have heard and seen a lot of lipservice and little action from a variety of sources. Similar sentiments have been shared with me many times by fellow Hispanos. So this approach literally made me smile.

In case you don't know Obama has pledged $20 million to Latino outreach. This is more than any party has ever earmarked to target our growing powerful group and just the start of things to come in. Instead on simply purchasing ads and throwing them up on Spanish-Language media some of that money is going to this project that has already been held in 8 states. This runs counter to the stereotype of today's marketing approach to our diverse community. This is a brilliant stroke if you ask me and fits into the team's overall goal of registering as many Latinos as possible. Afterall, advertising on a national Spanish news TV program would reach only 39% of Hispanic voter and although this is from a 2004 Pew Hispanic study it still reflects today's basic Hispanic language demographics.

Congrats to Temo Figueroa and his team for this innovative approach on a national level and to Barack Obama for supporting them.
