‘Cane’ actor feels show makes strides - Nestor Carbonell
Nestor Carbonell is part of a big-name cast on the CBS drama “Cane” that has one thing in common: The leads are almost all Latino.
There’s Emmy-winner Jimmy Smits, Emmy-winner Hector Elizondo and Oscar-winner Rita Moreno, among others.
“I’m so thrilled,” Nestor said when we chatted last week. “You always hope that strides are made, and I feel they certainly have been. Even before `Suddenly Susan,’ when I started (in 1996), the kinds of roles that were open to Latinos are nothing like there are today.”"*
Cane’s Smits, Prince and Cidre - Interview with Jimmy Smits
Jimmy Smits has starred in some of television’s most acclaimed series from L.A. Law to NYPD Blue to The West Wing. Previously to be found in supporting-actor roles, Smits takes center stage in Cane, a new drama from CBS Paramount Network Television. In the series, which Smits is also co-executive-producing, he plays Alex Vega, the adopted son of an affluent Cuban American family that runs a sugar-and-rum empire in Florida. With a cast that includes Hector Elizondo as Pancho, the ailing family patriarch who chooses Alex as his heir over his biological sons; Rita Moreno as Pancho’s wife Amalia and Nestor Carbonell as Alex’s resentful brother Frank, the series has the weight of CBS’s marketing machine behind it. Smits talks to World Screen about his hopes for the show.”*

Sugar & Spice: New series is like a steamy ‘Dynasty’ — but with mojitos - (more on Cane)
“They’ve done everything they can to make it authentic, from hiring a dialect coach to ensure Spanish is spoken with a Havana accent to making hundreds of expensive color photocopies of Cuban tile to dress the set walls.
But, the producers of Cane — the new CBS series about a family of Cuban-exile sugar barons in South Florida — warn that their show is ultimately a drama, not a documentary.
”I hope Cubans like it. I hope they’re proud,” says Cane creator Cynthia Cidre, herself an exile from Little Havana. “I’m Cuban. But it has to appeal to the whole country, not just Miami.”
Cane — which debuted Tuesday on WFOR-CBS 4 — has stirred intense interest in South Florida since its May announcement. It’s the first prime time drama on a broadcast network about not just a Cuban family but a Latin family of any kind. And it’s coming to America’s top-rated network with an all-star cast that includes Jimmy Smits, Rita Moreno, Hector Elizondo and Nestor Carbonell.”

Jimmy Smits drama Cane shows promise on CBS
“This season, CBS is giving drama another shot with “Cane,” a slick and earnest soap about rival families in southern Florida. One makes sugar and rum; the other makes trouble. And presiding over it all is the ever-capable Jimmy Smits, who has been around long enough to play a world-weary heavyweight rather than the affable hunk of roles past. The show will sink or swim on his broad shoulders, and early indications are reasonably promising.
Despite the title, there is actually nobody named Cane here. The primary clan here is the Duques, a Cuban-American family headed by patriarch Pancho (Hector Elizondo) and matriarch Amalia (Rita Moreno, still breathing fire). They have an ambitious son, Frank (Nestor Carbonell), who sees as his birthright the assumption of their mega-successful rum and sugar empire. Frank is locked in a power struggle with Alex Vega (Smits), Pancho’s son-in-law who married into the business via his daughter Isabel (Paola Turbay), while youngest son Henry (Eddie Matos) is content to stay on the sidelines and away from the battle.”
Interview: ‘Cane’ Creator Cynthia Cidre
“The new CBS drama series Cane centers on the Duque family, the Cuban-American owners of a sugar and rum business. Created by Cynthia Cidre, the show features many elements of her personal experience and unique writing trademarks, such as her father’s experience in the sugar industry and her inclusion of adopted characters in large Cuban-American families. Cane stars an impressive Latino cast, including Jimmy Smits, Nestor Carbonell, Hector Elizondo and Rita Moreno.
Cynthia Cidre spoke to BuddyTV about how the show initially came into being, the comparisons between Cane and Shakespeare’s King Lear, and the overall attractiveness of her show’s cast. Below you will find the complete transcript as well as the mp3 audio file of the interview.”

A stellar Latino cast raises CBS Cane
“Cane is a rarity for network television: a drama with a mostly Latino cast.
And what a cast it is: Jimmy Smits, Rita Moreno, Hector Elizondo, Nestor Carbonell, former Houstonian Paola Turbay, Michael Trevino, Eddie Matos and Lina Esco.
As Smits noted, “This is a deep bench.”"
