National Society of Hispanic MBAs Hosts Largest Hispanic MBA Conference in Minneapolis – October 8 – 10, 2009

The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) will hold its Annual Conference and Career Expo October 8 - 10 at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, MN. Over 8,000 MBA students, professionals, and executives will converge in Minneapolis to engage with top Hispanic leaders in America. The Career Expo boasts more than 250 corporations and academic institutions, and more than 4,000 on-site interviews. The conference theme, "Think Ahead, Move Forward," exemplifies the essence of the conference - presenting opportunities for the MBA student and professional to broaden their future and advance in the development of their relationships with peers and employers while gaining access to valuable resources.

This year, NSHMBA is pleased to have Target as corporate lead sponsor and Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota as the academic lead sponsor. The official ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on Friday, October 9 at 8:20 a.m. with the attendance of Mr. Tim Pawlenty, Governor of Minnesota; Isaias Zamarripa, Director of Talent Acquisition, General Mills and Chair of NSHMBA Corporate Advisory Board; Cosette Gutierrez, Chair of NSHMBA Board of Directors; Anthony Heredia, Vice President of Corporate Risk and Responsibility, Target; and Steve Ramos, NSHMBA Interim CEO.

NSHMBA's three-day conference features a Professional Development Day, an exclusive Executive Forum, a Research Forum, a Career Management Center, and the nation's largest career expo for Hispanic MBAs. The Professional Development Day includes breakout sessions presented by leading corporate executives and business experts, and an Executive Forum created to provide a venue for high-level Hispanic executives to convene and address the challenges and demands Hispanic executives face in corporate America.

During the conference, NSHMBA will recognize Hispanic scholarship recipients from across the country who have been recently awarded financial assistance through the NSHMBA Scholarship Program and the NSHMBA University Partnership Program.

During the final evening gala on Saturday night sponsored by Target, NSHMBA will present the prestigious Brillante Awards for Excellence awards, with Maria Celeste Arraras as the events Emcee. Ms. Arraras is host and managing editor of "Al Rojo Vivo con Maria Celeste," the most talked about newsmagazine in Hispanic television, airing nationwide in the U.S. and 15 Latin American countries, and produced by Telemundo/NBC.

The Brillante Awards evening gala brings the conference to a spectacular close with an extraordinary concert by Alejandro Fernandez, a popular Latin Grammy-winning Mexican singer who has sold over 15 million copies in over 20 countries. He is an authentic ambassador of Mexico.

The National Society of Hispanic MBAs Unveils Dynamic 2009 Conference & Career Expo Theme

"The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) unveiled their 2009 Conference Theme, Think Ahead, Move Forward, during a special kickoff ceremony in downtown Minneapolis. NSHMBA's Conference and Career Expo will be held October 8-10 this year at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

The kick-off event united NSHMBA's Corporate Advisory Board, which represents 39 of the nation's leading corporations and education-focused organizations, Minneapolis city leaders, corporate VIPs, members of NSHMBA's Minneapolis/St. Paul Chapter and national office staff, as well as members of the organization's Board of Directors, all of whom left armed with the message of strength and confidence resulting from this year's conference theme -- Think Ahead, Move Forward.

"he Cincinnati Chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) has announced the date and time of its annual ‘Education for Success’ seminar sponsored by Kroger. The event, designed to help Hispanic high school students ages 13-18 prepare for college, will be held Saturday, September 27 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Cintas Center at Xavier University.

Keynote speakers for the event include Carver Johnson, Chief Diversity Officer for The Kroger Company; and Jason Riveiro, Ohio State Director and Cincinnati Chapter League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) President.

Presentations will highlight preparation tips for financial aid and the SAT and ACT tests, as well as best practice advice for working with college admissions departments and filling out applications. Representatives from Greater Cincinnati universities and successful area Hispanic professionals will also be in attendance to share their stories and advice.

“We know how overwhelming the college application process can be, and have created Education for Success in order to help and encourage Cincinnati Hispanic High School students to better prepare for a successful post-secondary education,” Cincinnati NSHMBA president Gema Bahns said. “This event will give area students the added bonus of networking with representatives from area universities and from the national board of directors of NSHMBA.”

National Society of Hispanic MBAs’ Prestigious University Partnership Program Grows to 33 Universities

"The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) recently announced the addition of six universities to the University Partnership Program roster. The universities added to the prestigious 33-member partnership program are University of Pittsburgh, The Ohio State University, Chapman University, University of San Francisco, Rollins College, and the University of New Mexico. This academic year, NSHMBA awarded over $1.3 million in financial assistance to outstanding Hispanics pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or equivalent. The University Partnership Program, along with other NSHMBA scholarship programs, shares in this educational success.

NSHMBA created the University Partnership Program in 2006 to provide select academic institutions an expanded pool of qualified Hispanic applicants for graduate business programs. The program also creates a joint partnership opportunity in order to strengthen the pipeline of Hispanic students completing bachelors and masters degrees. The partnership program offers financial assistance in the form of scholarships, fellowships and assistantships. The concept for the program began several years ago when individual NSHMBA chapters around the nation collaborated with local universities to offer financial assistance to deserving candidates. It is NSHMBAs' hope that more universities join the program and help build the number of opportunities available to Hispanic students seeking MBAs and to develop a close relationship with the NSHMBA local chapters.

"The Cincinnati chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs has today announced the official lineup of panel speakers for its inaugural Executive Perspective event, sponsored by Accenture. Five of the six featured speakers are Cincinnati area executives. This year’s topic is: “Developing a High Performance Mindset,” at the program which will be held August 7 at the Westin hotel.

Presenters include:

· Miguel Alemañy, Director of worldwide research and development, Procter & Gamble

Churros hit mainstream - Spurred by an explosion of interest in all things Latino, the fried batons of dough — traditionally sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar — are popping up on menus across the country. When the president’s daughter serves churros at her wedding, it’s probably safe to say they’ve hit the mainstream.

Still, there are issues in which a Latino lens slides into place. Education is one. It doesn’t surprise me that Latinos consistently rank education as the No. 1 issue. It must be, when 30 percent to 50 percent of Hispanic students are dropping out of high school and Latinos are the largest and fastest growing population in the country. A plus B equals disaster.

When she won the Ms. Latina USA title in 2006, Sandra Colon became the first Connecticut resident since Dorothy Hann in 1933 to win a national beauty title. Despite the 73-year gap between national pageant winners, Colon won her title in relative obscurity.

“McCain’s problem is the problem of his party demonizing Hispanic people,” Luis Cortes (one of Time Magazine’s 25 most influential evangelicals in America & 2x Bush backer) said. “His party demonized us. You can’t switch off the immigration rhetoric and think it will work. In the context of the immigration issue, Hispanics define the enemy as the Republican Party and you don’t erase that overnight.

About 1,000 people, including rabbis, Hispanic immigrants and Catholic clergy, marched through Postville, Iowa on Sunday, protesting working conditions at Agriprocessors Inc.

The real story is decades of inadequate response from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. health system to HIV-AIDS in the Hispanic community; that has allowed almost 100,000 Hispanics to die and new cases to continue to appear.

GOP strategist Bill McInturff has long emphasized that earning 40 percent of the Hispanic vote is critical for Republicans to win. Today, McInturff is John McCain’s pollster, and by his metric McCain has a serious Latino problem.

Regardless of whom Hispanics wind up supporting come November, Harley Shaiken, chairman of the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of California Berkeley, says there’s clearly a cautionary tale in all this. “Tension is nothing new between races and ethnicities in this country,” he says. “But it can be overstated … racial and ethnic relations are very complex to interpret. Plausible and correct are two different things.”

“McCain’s problem is the problem of his party demonizing Hispanic people,” Luis Cortes (one of Time Magazine’s 25 most influential evangelicals in America & 2x Bush backer) said. “His party demonized us. You can’t switch off the immigration rhetoric and think it will work. In the context of the immigration issue, Hispanics define the enemy as the Republican Party and you don’t erase that overnight.

Still, there are issues in which a Latino lens slides into place. Education is one. It doesn’t surprise me that Latinos consistently rank education as the No. 1 issue. It must be, when 30 percent to 50 percent of Hispanic students are dropping out of high school and Latinos are the largest and fastest growing population in the country. A plus B equals disaster.

GOP strategist Bill McInturff has long emphasized that earning 40 percent of the Hispanic vote is critical for Republicans to win. Today, McInturff is John McCain’s pollster, and by his metric McCain has a serious Latino problem.

Regardless of whom Hispanics wind up supporting come November, Harley Shaiken, chairman of the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of California Berkeley, says there’s clearly a cautionary tale in all this. “Tension is nothing new between races and ethnicities in this country,” he says. “But it can be overstated … racial and ethnic relations are very complex to interpret. Plausible and correct are two different things.”

President of Colorado State University Joins National Society of Hispanic MBAs Board of Directors

"The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Larry Edward Penley, president of Colorado State University to the 2008 National Board of Directors. NSHMBA named Dr. Penley to the board as a result of a change in the board structure to diversify the background and expertise of the board. President Penley serves on numerous boards, both economic and higher education related and his expertise with public research institutions aligns well with the goals of NSHMBA. Before joining Colorado State University, Penley served for many years as a professor of management and dean of the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. Dr. Larry Edward Penley became the 13th president of Colorado State University and Chancellor of the CSU System on August 1, 2003.

Dr. Penley's lifelong commitment to higher education took root at Wake Forest University, where he earned a Bachelor's in Psychology and a Master's in Communication and his doctorate in management at the University of Georgia. Following graduate school, he joined the faculty of the University of Texas at San Antonio. Reflecting his strong commitment to international education and understanding, he also has taught at the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Mexico and the Universidad de Carabobo in Venezuela.

"Dr. Penley is an excellent addition to our board and will serve the entire NSHMBA organization well. By including different areas of expertise to our board structure, we continue to lift our organization to higher levels and to further our impact on our nation," stated Lourdes Hassler, NSHMBA CEO.

Under the new NSHMBA Board structure, potential board members will undergo selection through a nomination process. The NSHMBA Nominations Committee will review candidates and submit for approval by the national board and chapter presidents. This new process will provide NSHMBA the opportunity to enhance the expertise and leadership of the board with like-minded national leaders from diverse backgrounds.

When asked about the new board structure, Hassler stated, "NSHMBA continues to benefit immeasurably from the commitment and expertise of our board and this enhancement."
