Greater Cincinnati integrated public relations and marketing consultancy firm Eisen Management Group has been named agency of record (AOR) for the Cincinnati Chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs. The professional organization has hired EMG to develop and implement a new communications program and advocacy initiative designed to awareness, sponsorships and membership.

According to EMG president Rodger Roeser, one of the main thrusts of the campaign will be to build better general understanding of NSHMBA, and to bring a more “human element” to the chapter by sharing the benefits of professional development, networking and education offered by the organization to sponsors, current and prospective membership.

“It’s an incredible group of some of the best and brightest in our city, who are passionately dedicated to building understanding and fostering leadership,” Roeser says. “We as an agency look forward to utilizing our expertise to share those stories with fellow business leaders and the general public.”

NSHMBA Cincinnati chapter president Gema Bahns explained that Eisen was chosen not only because of its success in working with other professional organizations, but also because of the shared passion for their craft between agency and client. “You can see it in their eyes and their actions how much the group at EMG cares about its craft and its clientele,” Bahns said. “We know and appreciate that we are not the largest client in the world, but they make us feel like we are. We are a passionate group of hard working professionals dedicated to something larger than any of us individually, and EMG quickly understood what we needed, and put us into motion to achieve that.”

Roeser explained that the three main communications initiatives as part of the public relations campaign are:

• You need neither be Hispanic nor an MBA to join the chapter;
• it is a powerful networking, educational and sponsorship opportunity for businesses and leaders seeking to learn, profit and reach out to a high level, diverse audience, and;
• that stereotypes regarding Hispanics need to be addressed and overcome.

Roeser said he expects the agency to implement a social media and online campaign, combined with general operations and brand alignment, local publicity, and literature development.

There are currently 200 members of the Cincinnati NSHMBA chapter.

Boston College — Carroll School of Management, Cleveland State University — Nance College of Business Administration, University of Miami — School of Business Administration and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign — College of Business have been added to the list of top universities that comprise the 27-member partnership.
NSHMBA created the University Partnership Program in 2006 to provide select academic institutions an expanded pool of qualified Hispanic applicants for graduate business programs. The program also creates a joint partnership opportunity in order to strengthen the pipeline of Hispanic students completing bachelors and masters degrees. The partnership program offers financial assistance in the form of scholarships, fellowships and assistantships. The concept for the program began several years ago when individual NSHMBA chapters around the nation collaborated with local universities to offer financial assistance to deserving candidates. NSHMBA encourages more universities to join its partnership program and help build the number of opportunities available for top Hispanic students seeking MBAs and to develop a close relationship with the NSHMBA local chapters. In 2007, NSHMBA awarded over $1 million in financial assistance to outstanding Hispanics pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or equivalent.

As universities join the NSHMBA University Partnership Program, they benefit from recruiting top notch Hispanic MBA students for their business school,” said Lourdes M. Second annual symposium born of results-driven national program, offering students educational workshops, leadership opportunities, and mentorship support throughout the year

San Francisco, CA - An inspiring and expanding program to help develop and grow the next generation of Hispanic professionals is returning to the Bay Area in June to guide at least 100 promising high school students on a path to achieving college degrees and careers.

The second annual Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium will be launched at St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga on June 25-28, 2008, by the Hispanic College Fund, a nationally renowned nonprofit that provides scholarships and programs to Hispanic students eager to achieve a college education and professional careers. The symposium will serve promising students from Alameda, Contra Costa, Sonoma, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Solano, and San Mateo counties, encouraging them to enter the fields of business, science, technology, engineering, and math.
“The Hispanic Youth Symposium is just an incredible experience to be involved in, and it’s turning out results,” said Elena Stonebraker, civil rights and equal opportunity manager of the Social Security Administration, San Francisco Region, in Richmond, Calif. As a lead partner for the program in the Bay Area, the Social Security Administration will mobilize 60 to 70 of its volunteer employees to assist with logistics and lead several workshops. It also has committed a full-time employee, as well as volunteers for Phoenix and Fresno symposia.

“In this region - one of the largest and most diverse in the country - programs like this are critical to helping young Hispanics to plan and be proud of their contributions,” Stonebraker said.

Boasting an impressive track record in several major U.S. cities - including the Bay Area and Fresno - the Hispanic Youth Symposium has grown into a four-day event and one-year follow-up program designed to increase Latino knowledge of the milestones and prerequisites needed to prepare for and attend college.
This year in the Bay Area, it will inspire more students to nurture their dreams and take pride in Hispanic culture with educational workshops, leadership opportunities, mentorship, and an emphasis on academic achievement.
“The number of students who applied to participate in this year’s symposium demonstrates genuine buy-in from the community. Contrary to popular belief, Latino students are hungry for the type of in-depth college and career exposure that we provide at the symposium,” said Andrew Gonzalez, the Hispanic College Fund’s Development Manager, Western States. “Our goal is to continue to mobilize the entire community to provide these services to as many students as possible. It is incredibly vital, especially in the Bay Area, where so many careers are increasingly focused on areas we are addressing.”
“Research has shown that one of the most significant barriers to Latinos attending college is a lack of knowledge about the college preparation process, but Latino families consider education to be very important,” according to Kathryn Grady, the Hispanic College Fund’s Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, Western States. “The Hispanic Youth Symposium helps bridge this gap between a lack of information and the desire to pursue an education,” she said.

“Building this knowledge to increase college attendance is crucial to the future health care workforce,” according to Melissa Aboytes, coordinator of youth workforce programs for Kaiser Permanente, a lead partner of the Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium. Kaiser Permanente is organizing volunteers and will conduct workshops on health careers at the symposium, with a focus on growing opportunities in the medical field that are not as recognizable but in need of attention.

“Kaiser Permanente has a very strong commitment to diversity within the organization and, in terms of workforce planning, we are very dedicated to conducting outreach in order to help develop and train future health care workers for the benefit of a skilled work force in northern California,” Aboytes said.
Thanks to last year’s California programs in the Bay Area and Fresno combined, more than 200 high school sophomores and juniors continue to be assisted and guided in the college preparation process. Follow-up research by the Hispanic College Fund has shown that participants in the symposia significantly increased their knowledge of the college application process and interest in internships and community volunteering, as well as having gained a positive role model/mentor.
“It is these connections to mentors and others who are more advanced on their career paths that aspiring young Hispanics will come to appreciate in their professional lives,” said Richard Ventura, CEO and President of the San Francisco Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The San Francisco Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is the lead business community partner of the Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium.
“This symposium starts at the high school and college levels with introductions to Latino executives, and it creates that connectivity in relationships,” Ventura said. “A job isn’t simply a job; it’s who sees you in the job. It’s not really who you know, it’s who knows you. Forming these relationships gives students that competitive advantage. Without this experience, many of them would not have access to a network, or the confidence in knowing how to go about building one.”
St. Mary’s College of California in Moraga is serving again this year as university partner in the Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium, providing facilities and administration. Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium sponsors include the Federal Executive Board, the Hard Rock Café San Francisco, PG&E, Pier 39, Safeway, Union Bank of California, and Wells Fargo.  Community partners include Kaiser Permanente, Lambda Theta Phi, Latin Fraternity, Inc., League of Latin American Citizens Youth Program (LULAC), San Francisco Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Social Security Administration, the U.S. Forest Service Central California Consortium, and Univision Radio.

“The Hispanic College Fund depends on its community partners to help reach students and mobilize support from local donations to volunteers,” said Fernando Barrueta, CEO of the Hispanic College Fund. “We bring national sponsorships and visibility to the communities that we serve - and national opportunities for students - but we rely on the local support to make the program as successful and personal as it is. It truly will help shape the next workforce of scientific and technical graduates in these communities,” Barrueta said.

Local support in the Bay Area includes the League of United Latin American Citizens Youth Program (LULAC), where youth coordinator Silvia Andrade said she has found observable value in the symposium’s reach and impact in the Bay Area.
“This symposium focuses directly on the Hispanic students, and that’s a wonderful thing also for the parents, where cultural understanding is so important,” Andrade said. “It’s an excellent tool for our community to excel in higher education, especially when the high school isn’t focusing on certain students or even giving them a chance to dream about going to university. These young people can come to the symposium and say, ‘Wait a minute, I think I can do this.’”
More than one-third of California’s population is Hispanic, but as recently as 2006, only 12.5% of Hispanics in the U.S. had a college degree - the lowest rate of any group in the United States. This is especially problematic for Northern California, where the majority of high-paying jobs are heavily concentrated in areas on business, science, technology, engineering, and math.
Andrade encourages young professionals across the Bay Area community step up and offer what they have to give.

“We just cannot just sit back and enjoy our title or professional status. All of you young professionals - we need you - we need you to be out there inspiring our young people,” she said. “We have a lot of work to do. Get out there and let them see that you’re successful and involved, and you’ll be changing someone’s life.”

The symposium reaches out to student participants who meet the following criteria:

* Have a minimum 2.5 GPA
* Are Hispanic
* Have completed the application to participate
* Are rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors in high school
* Are residents of Alameda, Contra Costa, Sonoma, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Solano, or San Mateo counties
* Pay a $10 participation fee (which can be waived upon request)

In addition, from 100 to 150 community volunteers will be engaged to assist with everything from logistics coordination to talent show judging. Approximately 20 college student resident advisors also are being recruited to help with the symposium management.

In order to track the results of each symposium, the Hispanic College Fund will conduct pre- and post-event surveys to determine whether students show a marked improvement in their understanding of the college application process, the financial aid process, and the role that community involvement and high school academic achievement play in the college preparation process. Also, the Hispanic College Fund will conduct a longitudinal study of its student participants to track how their college preparation improves, whether they go to college, the caliber of the college they attend, and the kind of career they pursue upon graduation.

Kaiser Permanente continues to support the Hispanic Youth Symposium because it has shown positive results in terms of student development and follow-up, Aboytes said. “The Hispanic College Fund really takes a strong commitment to students and the follow-up is significant,” she said. “We are looking for that longer-term vision, for an understanding of where the students are coming from and where they are going.”

In early May, the website of the Bay Area Hispanic Youth Symposium will be released. For more information on the national Hispanic Youth Symposium, go to www.hispanicyouth.org.

Hyundai Motor America Launches National Hispanic Outreach Program on Financial Planning and Business Development

Filed under [ Hispanic News ] [ Press Releases ] [ Your Money ]
Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

“Hyundai Motor America has partnered with one of the nation’s leading experts and advocates for financial empowerment and small business development as well as best-selling author, Louis Barajas. Celebrating his second published book, Small Business, Big Life in May 2007, Hyundai is hosting the book signing tour and financial and entrepreneurial empowerment workshops at the annual conventions of the leading Hispanic advocacy, professional and business organizations as well as higher education associations representing Hispanic-serving institutions in the country.

Louis Barajas is a premier example of the American dream. Born in East Los Angeles and the son of Mexican immigrants, Mr. Barajas began his financial and small business career in his teens by helping his father and mother with their wrought iron business. He graduated from UCLA in 1984, received his MBA from Claremont Graduate School in 1987, and attained a Certified Financial Planner designation from the Denver College of Financial Planning in 1990. After years of experience at major accounting and financial planning firms, he returned to East Los Angeles in 1991 to form his own financial and business planning firm. Louis wished to make a difference within the Latino community he grew up in, hard-working men and women who, because of a lack of information or understanding, often had limited financial choices that kept them from achieving the success, security, and significance they deserved.

Hyundai admires the personal and business accomplishments Mr. Barajas has achieved throughout his career and the significance and overall impact he sets on all those who have the opportunity to read his books, listen to his speeches or participate in one of his workshops. “At Hyundai, we are proud to encourage good thinking and align ourselves with programs that benefit communities in which we live and do business,” said Alma McMaster, National Manager of Diversity Relations for Hyundai Motor America. “The Hispanic Market has contributed tremendously to Hyundai’s success in the United States and we are proud to partner with Mr. Barajas as he launches his second book.”

The tour was launched during the annual convention of The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest and most influential Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S. The annual conference and Latino Business Expo were recently held this year in Miami, Fl.

As the program continues to tour the country, Hyundai expands the positive echoing effects of Mr. Barajas inspirational and motivational words through the book signing tour offering thousands of consumers complimentary signed copies of his most recent published book and powerful workshops for Hispanic entrepreneurs. “Hyundai recognizes and applauds the work and success of Louis Barajas and is proud to unite with individuals and organizations that help to enrich the local communities we do business with,” states Walter Rodriguez, Diversity Relations Manager for Hyundai Motor America. “We share his passion and mission to improve opportunities for Hispanics throughout the country.”

Hyundai recently sponsored the 28th Annual Convention and Business Expo of the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (CHCC) on August 22 - 26, 2007 in Long Beach, CA. The CHCC is the premier and largest regional Hispanic business organization in the nation representing the interests of over 600,000 Hispanic-owned businesses in the state of California. The chamber promotes the economic growth and development of Hispanic entrepreneurs through its network and support of over 60 local Hispanic chambers and business associations throughout the state.

Louis Barajas offered “The Journey to Financial Greatness for Small Business Owners” workshop in both English and Spanish complimentary to the public thanks to the support of Hyundai. The workshop helps individuals and business owners attain their financial goals through the proper implementation of wise financial and business strategies. Louis Barajas personally conducted the workshops and guided all participants through his proven 10 steps required to achieve financial greatness.

Houston, Texas was home for the 18th Annual Conference and Career Expo for the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA), the third event Hyundai sponsored in conjunction with the book tour visit with Louis Barajas. The conference took place on October 4 through 6 with attendance exceeding 7,000 Hispanic MBA professionals and students participating in informative workshops on current business issues and professional development; as well as host of one of the preeminent career expos in the country providing strong network opportunities among members and students, academic institutions and corporate participants.

Hyundai’s Hispanic Financial Empowerment Program will reach the Midwest on October 20, 2007 during the 21st Annual Conference of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) taking place in Chicago, IL. As this year’s theme, “Championing Hispanic Education Success: A Imperative for the 21st Century,” Hyundai’s Hispanic Outreach program reinforces this goal with workshops conducted by Mr. Louis Barajas as well as complimentary signed books to attendees that will provide the right tools for their financial success and educational goals.

Continuing the commitment and support of providing resources for Hispanic entrepreneurial empowerment, Hyundai will be sponsoring the 2007 National Minority Supplier Development Council Conference and Business Opportunity Fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The NMSDC has made great strides in providing increased procurement and business opportunities for minority-owned businesses. Hyundai together with Louis Barajas will provide complimentary signed books at the business opportunity fair on Monday October 29, 2007.

“At Hyundai, we believe partnering with qualified, experienced and value-driven suppliers regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or size will foster the business advantage required to succeed in this market,” states Keith Duckworth, Executive V.P. General Affairs for Hyundai Motor America. “Additionally, we recognize a diverse supplier pool allows us to take advantage of new perspectives, unique talents and cutting edge ideas. We are committed to search for the most professional and diverse business partners.”

Hyundai Diversity Relations’ objective is to foster an environment in which diversity is explicitly recognized as a fundamental part of not only the company’s internal infrastructure, but in all aspects of the company’s business operations including community outreach and philanthropic efforts. The alignments and programs established this year will help enrich communities nationwide and contribute to the overall economic health of the nation.
