Crusading education coverage, investigations that saved lives of liver transplant patients, and a detailed telling of the Bush administration's economic legacy headlined the excellent work honored in the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' 2009 Journalism Awards announced this week.

Among the eight awards given, the honor in the TV Investigative category went to a probe into a cover up by authorities to hide the number of suicides by veterans, led by CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian and producer Pia Malbran. A revealing look at the dangerous and often horrendous trek by Central Americans crossing through Mexico to get to the U.S. by La Opinión writer Gardenia Mendoza Aguilar won this year's Guillermo Martinez Marquez Award for Latin American Reporting.

"Despite less participation than in previous years, the quality of the work was just outstanding, both in its range of topics and in the depth of talent these colleagues demonstrated by what they put on the page or on the air," said NAHJ Executive Director Iván Román.

Luis Fábregas and Andrew Contin of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review were honored in the Print Investigative category for their probe into how a liver transplant system driven by profit was actually killing people and spurred reforms which have saved lives. In the Television Documentary category, judges cited excellent editing, imagery and treatment of the topic to award TVE Espana's Jose Jimenez Pons and Llucía Oliva de la Esperanza for their work on how growing poverty in the U.S. under the Bush administration is affecting people, including many Latinos.

The Detroit News' editorial writer Amber Arellano's crusading pieces using investigative journalism to reveal the true magnitude of the black and Latino male high-school dropout problem received the award for Print Commentary. Winning in the Print Feature category, the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Frederick Melo and Brandi Jade Thomas gave readers a well-written immigrant-dreams-gone-bad tale from the hometown Guatemalan village of an undocumented immigrant accused of striking a school bus with her minivan in Minnesota and killing four children.

Julio Rivera Saniel of WKAQ 580 Univision Radio in Puerto Rico, won the Radio Reporting award for his look into the life and resistance in San Juan's poor community of La Perla. A CBS News team led by correspondent Byron Pitts detailing the suffering of a family of a deceased Marine sergeant whose skin cancer was misdiagnosed while serving in Iraq won in the Television Feature Large Market category.

For more information and the judge's comments on the winners and to see the work being honored, click here, http://www.nahj.org/awards/2009/09awardwinners.shtml

Several categories were declared vacant by the judges due to a lack of participation in an exceptionally difficult economic and professional year for journalists and the news media industry. NAHJ also decided not to give its most prestigious ñ awards in 2009, usually presented at the Annual Noche de Triunfos Journalism Awards Gala, which was cancelled this year. The ñ Awards include the Leadership Award, the Emerging Journalist Award and others.

Honors in all the categories and the ñ awards are expected to be given in 2010 as NAHJ holds the often inspiring gala next fall.

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists has long been on record as advocating fair, accurate and balanced coverage on Latinos and immigration in particular. Fairness, accuracy and balance, on the whole, have been largely absent from CNN commentator Lou Dobbs' coverage on immigration.

NAHJ welcomes Dobbs' departure from CNN, announced Wednesday. We laud CNN's willingness to let him out of his contract early to "pursue new opportunities."

We note, however, that Dobbs will continue as anchor of a daily radio show broadcast by more than 160 stations as part of the United Stations Radio Networks Inc. And even CNN acknowledges that his departure is based on his decision to "carry the banner of advocacy journalism elsewhere."

Our fear is that CNN's gain -- represented by the loss of Dobbs -- will simply be someone's pain elsewhere.

Dobbs' "reporting" prompted some groups earlier to demand that CNN either dismiss or control him, specifically on this issue of immigration. We've understood the deep concern Dobbs' reporting has generated but did not join these efforts. Not because Dobbs is an NAHJ lifetime member by virtue of a single donation made earlier, but because we believe that the best antidote to flawed journalism is good journalism, of the kind practiced both by our members and by most of the responsible press on the issue of immigration.

In that spirit, today we call on CNN to keep the highest standards of journalism in mind as it considers Dobbs' replacement, considering when it makes this decision the considerable harm Dobbs' show has done to the cause of understanding on the issue of immigration in particular. It is an issue that has too long attracted fear mongering and inaccurate reporting.

Soledad O'Brien's "Latino in America" series on CNN did much to advance this cause of understanding. As CNN considers how to replace Dobbs, we would ask for more of this kind of reporting and far less -- as in none -- of the kind practiced by Dobbs.

Our issue with Dobbs has never been about "advocacy journalism." Opinion journalism plays a treasured role as watchdog and valuable source of information in a democratic society. But this opinion should ideally be supported by facts. Dobbs has failed in this regard.

Wherever he lands, we challenge journalists and listeners and viewers everywhere to continue weighing Dobbs' "advocacy journalism" -- on immigration in particular -- against reality. In such a contest, we have no doubt that a more reasoned understanding of immigration and Latinos will prevail.

Founded in 1984, NAHJ's mission is to increase the percentage of Latinos working in our nation's newsrooms and to improve news coverage of the Latino community.

As the heated debates over health care and immigration reform collide, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists calls on our nation's news media to stop using the dehumanizing term "illegals" as a noun to refer to undocumented immigrants.

NAHJ has long advocated for accurate terminology in news coverage of immigration. NAHJ is concerned with the increasing use of pejorative terms like "illegals" -- which is shorthand for "illegal aliens," another term NAHJ objects to using -- to describe the estimated 12 million undocumented people living in the United States.

Using "illegals" in this way is grammatically incorrect and crosses the line by dehumanizing and criminalizing the person, not the action they are purported to have committed. NAHJ calls on the media to never use "illegals" in headlines and in television news crawls.

"We continue to see 'illegals' used as a noun seeping from the fringes into the mainstream media, and in turn, into the mainstream political dialogue," said NAHJ Executive Director Iván Román. "Using these terms not only distorts the debate, but it takes away their identities as individuals and human beings. When journalists do that, it's that much easier to treat them unfairly and not give them an equal voice in the controversy."

By incessantly using metaphors like "illegals," the news media is not only appropriating the rhetoric used by people on a particular side of the issue, but also the implication of something criminal or worthy of suspicion. That helps to predetermine the credibility or respect given to one of the protagonists of this debate, which is not conducive to good journalism and does a disservice to the principles of fairness and neutrality.

In addition, NAHJ has always denounced the use of the degrading terms "alien" and "illegal alien" to describe undocumented immigrants because it casts them as adverse, strange beings, inhuman outsiders who come to the U.S. with questionable motivations. "Aliens" is a bureaucratic term that should be avoided unless used in a quote.

NAHJ also calls on editors and journalists to follow generally accepted guidelines regarding race and ethnicity and refrain from reporting a person's legal status unless it is relevant to the story in question. The public in certain regions of the country have pressured news media to publish the legal status of any Latino who appears in the newspaper or on television, regardless of the story's subject.

Doing so contributes to the growing trend of profiling Latinos as non-Americans or foreigners and using them as scapegoats for a variety of society's ills, a tone that has become more pervasive in the public dialogue over the past few years. Few now doubt that this helps create a fertile environment for hate speech which we have seen can lead to discrimination and a growing number of hate crimes in the U.S. against Latinos.

As the U.S. tackles immigration reform in the future, NAHJ believes that responsible, fair, and non-simplistic coverage of this complex issue is in order. The words used can be part of the problem or can contribute to fair coverage and a fruitful public debate.

NAHJ, a 1,500-member organization of reporters, editors and other journalists, addresses the use of these words and phrases by the news media in its Resource Guide for Journalists. For excerpts of some of the relevant entries in the resource guide, click here, http://www.nahj.org/nahjnews/articles/2009/september/immigrationentries.shtml.

"The National Association of Hispanic Journalists condemns the Venezuelan government's shutdown of 34 private radio stations and strongly opposes a proposed law that would put journalists behind bars for a broad swath of supposed "media crimes."

By its own admission, the government's targeting of these 34 radio stations is a first step in considering similar actions against some 200 other stations across the country. President Hugo Chavez's declared war on certain opposition media reached a new level of aggressiveness Monday when 35 pro-government militants stormed the Globovisión television station, brandished weapons, threw two tear-gas canisters, and injured two people.

NAHJ calls on authorities to investigate the incident at Globovisión and arrange effective protection for the station's journalists and employees. (Press reports indicate that the leader of the violent incident, Lina Ron, was arrested Tuesday afternoon.) NAHJ also urges the government to reconsider its attempt to pass the Special Law Against Media Crimes, which we consider a true and far-reaching attack on freedom of expression and a free press.

The draft of the bill presented to the country's legislature by Attorney General Luisa Ortega Díaz calls for jail sentences varying from six months to four years for journalists and media owners who publish or broadcast "false news," or who "manipulate or distort the news" resulting in "generating a false perception of the facts or creating a mindset among society, so long as such action has damaged the social peace, domestic security, public order, and public health or public morality."

It also calls for jail time for journalists or media owners who refuse to identify their sources or "who willingly and without any justification refuse to report on facts or situations whose lack of dissemination may harm the right to information" under the country's constitution. In essence, journalists would be jailed for publishing the "wrong" information in the government's view, or failing to publish what the government wants them to.

Government officials have said that the crackdown on the radio stations and some television stations are an effort to "democratize" the media and take back for the people airwaves controlled by particular interests in Venezuela.

Although there is a place and a necessity for government-sponsored media, increasing government control of media is another matter. It is clear that the sustained campaign against certain private-owned media is an attempt to silence dissent and criticism of the government. As attorney general Ortega herself stated, "The Venezuelan state must regulate freedom of expressions. I demand that a limit be placed on this right."

We stand with our colleagues marching in Caracas or broadcasting in protest over loudspeakers in a public square in denouncing this as an attack on freedom of the press, which is not conducive to civic dialogue and the free airing of views essential for a healthy democracy.

"Marga Gomez, acclaimed playwright and stand-up comedian, will perform during the Opening Plenary at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' 27th Annual Convention on Wednesday, June 24, 2009.

Gomez is a Cuban-Puerto Rican legend of stand-up comedy and will be performing her hilarious theater piece "Long Island Iced Latina" about Latinos and Latinas who don't speak Spanish but identify with Hispanic culture.

"In 'Long Island Iced Latina,' Gomez pours a long tall drink of cultural confusion, chronic virginity and mother daughter instability. What begins as a hilariously dark memoir of Gomez as the only brown girl in a white high school morphs into an intoxicating manifesto for Latinos who can't speak Spanish, suck at Salsa, and suffer from Blonditis," writes OUTmedia in a review of Gomez's performance.

Gomez is the recipient of a 2006 Drama Desk nomination and a 2004 GLAAD Award for Off-Off Broadway Theater. Her acting credits include "The Vagina Monologues" at the Westside Theater, HBO's "Tracy Takes on...," "Guiding Light," "Batman Forever," "Sphere" and indie favorites "Rosa Negra" and "The D Word."

Gomez has written and performed eight solo plays, and her credits include HBO, Showtime and PBS. She has appeared at Princeton, Yale, New York University, Columbia University, and countless comedy clubs.

Gomez's performance will take place during the Opening Plenary from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday June 24, 2009 in the Grand Ballroom of the Puerto Rico Convention Center. Gomez's performance and the Opening Plenary will welcome the more than 700 people attending NAHJ's convention, and is made possible by the generous sponsorship of FedEx.

NAHJ's 27th Annual Convention will run from June 24 to June 27, 2009 in San Juan, Puerto Rico and will focus on intensive, cutting-edge multimedia training. Convention attendees will have access to more than 63 workshops, training sessions and panel discussions to help them compete in a changing media landscape.
Founded in 1984, NAHJ's mission is to increase the percentage of Latinos working in our nation's newsrooms and to improve news coverage of the Latino community.

"Three enduring pioneers for equality and truth in storytelling will be inducted into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' Hall of Fame during the NAHJ Annual Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico next month where hundreds will converge to create a critical mass of journalists skilled in multimedia.

Geraldo Rivera, host of Fox's newsmagazine "Geraldo-at-Large," KRON Weekend Morning News anchor Ysabel Durón, and founder and editor of El Tecolote newspaper and professor of journalism at City College of San Francisco Juan Gonzales will be inducted into the NAHJ Hall of Fame. This year's Hall of Fame Gala starts at 7:30pm on Friday, June 26 at the Puerto Rico Convention Center during the 27th Annual NAHJ Convention and Media & Career Expo in San Juan, June 24-27, 2009.

"Each of the three nominees has done valuable work advancing the interest of journalism and the interest of Latinos in journalism," says Ricardo Pimentel, NAHJ President and editorial page editor for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I congratulate them all. Mostly, I thank them for paving the way for the Latino journalists who wisely held them up as role models and then began careers of their own."

Geraldo Rivera was the first Latino correspondent at a national news network for ABC's "Good Morning America." Rivera launched the long-running talk show "Geraldo" and was a senior correspondent for "20/20." Shortly after September 11, 2001, Rivera joined Fox News Network as a war correspondent and now hosts "Geraldo-at-Large." Rivera has won more than 170 journalism awards and is a founding member of NAHJ.

Ysabel Durón is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and storyteller who broke ground as the first Latina anchor in Chicago mainstream news. Durón has anchored the "Weekend Morning News" for KRON in San Francisco for nearly two decades and has been a fierce advocate for providing resources for cancer education and treatment to underserved communities. After being diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease in 1998, Durón produced an award-winning series chronicling her winning battle with the disease.

Juan Gonzales founded El Tecolote in 1970 -- a bilingual, non-commercial newspaper in San Francisco's Mission District that continues to advocate for justice and serves as a canvas for budding journalists. In addition to editing El Tecolote, Gonzales chairs the Department of Journalism at the City College of San Francisco, where he taught the first college-level course on Hispanic journalism titled La Raza Journalism. Gonzales also chairs the Voices for Justice project commemorating the bicentennial of Latino Newspapers in the U.S.

Created in 2000, NAHJ's Hall of Fame is reserved for journalists and industry pioneers whose national or local efforts have resulted in a greater number of Latinos entering the journalism profession or have helped to improve news coverage of the nation's Latino community.

With the induction of Rivera, Durón and Gonzales, there are now 25 NAHJ Hall of Famers.

"The National Association of Hispanic Journalists called on the media on Wednesday to be fair and prudent when covering the spread of swine flu in the U.S. and around the world, and resist the portrayal of Mexican immigrants as scapegoats for the possible pandemic.

The following is a statement from the NAHJ Board of Directors:

"We have come to expect immigrant bashing from the usual suspects -- commentators who use purposefully inflammatory rhetoric to seek attention and to suit their agenda. And they haven't disappointed, now using the swine flu as cause to decry immigration and immigrants. Immigrants, of course, have long been favorite and convenient scapegoats for some for everything from high taxes to infectious diseases. Facts haven't much mattered.

But we trust that credible journalists will cover what is undeniably a big national story with more fairness and accuracy than we are hearing from these talking heads. We would ask that these stories be written as if facts did matter. Because they do.

The temptation even in more credible media, we know, will be to link Mexican immigrants with the spread of the disease to the United States. The consequence of too much of this will be even more anger -- and perhaps even more violence -- against a community no more responsible for the spread of this ailment than U.S. tourists returning from scenic, balmy vacations.

There are more than 4,000 flights per week from the United States to Mexico. Mexicans are not the only people on those flights. About 80 percent of visitors to Mexico in 2008 came from the United States.

The Mexican immigrant community in the United States is a part of this story. But not in such narrow fashion as we're hearing at the moment. This community is as fearful of the swine flu's spread as anyone else. Viruses strike regardless of where you were born. And, please remember, the fear is not just for themselves but for family members and friends still in Mexico.

The World Health Organization is raising its alert from Level 4 to Level 5, an action that will cause further temptation to overreact. If the swine flu becomes a true pandemic, we ask simply that the news industry do its job. That would be covering the story, not in the breathless fashion of the talking heads, but as a story as needful of truth, fairness, accuracy and balance as any other important story. In fact, the bigger the story, the more it needs these attributes.

With such stories as this, the news media can be part of the solution or part of the problem."

Founded in 1984, NAHJ's mission is to increase the percentage of Latinos working in our nation's newsrooms and to improve news coverage of the Latino community. NAHJ is the nation's largest professional organization for Latino journalists with more than 2,300 members working in English and Spanish-language print, photo, broadcast and online media.
