PEOPLE en Espanol Reveals the Truth Behind Myrka Dellanos’ Marital Troubles - An In-Depth Look at What Caused the Couple’s Feud, the 911 Call, and Where the Relationship is Headed

“The November issue of PEOPLE en Espanol takes an in depth look at the marriage troubles between Cuban-American journalist Myrka Dellanos and her husband of only six months, Ulysses Alonzo. Friends and sources close to the couple speak exclusively with PEOPLE en Espanol detailing what really lead to Dellanos’ frantic 911 call and the battery charges against Alonzo.

(Photo: www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20081001/NY36419 )

According to sources close to the couple, problems began shortly after Alonzo moved into his new wife’s home, which she shared with her 75 year old mother, Myrka Aparicio, and 14 year old daughter Alexa. “Ulysses would walk the dog, cut the grass, and his mother-in-law would demand of him to pick up and drop off Alexa like a chauffeur as if he didn’t have a job,” says a close friend of Alonzo, adding that he also complained about how his wife treated him more like an assistant than her husband. According to that same source, Alonzo also talked of an aloof Dellanos who didn’t allow him to hug and kiss her as much he would have liked to, and once told him he “needed to learn when it was appropriate to get close to her.”

But what upset Alonzo the most, according to a friend, was a comment Dellanos made a week before the dispute. “The only yacht I would get on is Luis Miguel’s,” says the source was Dellanos’ response when Alonzo proposed renting jet-skis to take her and his stepdaughter Alexa cruising down the Miami bay. Luis Miguel and Dellanos dated for a few years before the relationship ended bitterly.

The way the story unfolded changes depending on the sources. Dellanos’ version was included in the official police report from that day, while friends of Alonzo say the alleged burst of aggression occurred when he approached his wife to discuss the problems they were having and she refused. “Ulysses is young, he is in love, more than she is. He is ready to take full responsibility, anything to be by her side. He told me: ‘I don’t want to hurt her, I would rather inflict the pain on myself,’” said a source.

PEOPLE en Espanol also spoke with Cassandra Alonzo, Ulysses Alonzo’s sister, who says the police report her sister-in-law gave the day of the incident was an exaggeration and overused by the press erroneously. “It’s repulsive what they have done to him, everything that has been said on television and the radio.”

Dellanos wasn’t exempt from the media bashing either. She’s been accused of making up the whole story up for personal publicity. According to friends, Alonzo is currently renting a small apartment close to the Dellanos home and is attending marriage therapy sessions as well as other courses required by the court. “Marriage is difficult, I know that,” said the twice divorced Dellanos to PEOPLE en Espanol back in May. “But you have to work hard and make yourself priority.” (Cover Story, Pg. 96)

2008 Siempre Mujer Siempre Inspiran Honorees Revealed in October/November Issue - Magazine Honors Myrka Dellanos, Mayte Prida, Laura Posada, María Elena Salinas, Ingrid Betancourt, Maria D. Roberts and Marisol González

“For the third year in a row, Siempre Mujer magazine honors “Always Inspiring” Hispanic women in its signature Siempre Inspiran October/November feature. The 2008 honorees — Myrka Dellanos, Mayte Prida, Laura Posada, María Elena Salinas, Ingrid Betancourt, Maria D. Roberts and Marisol González — were chosen for their hands-on commitment to important causes in the Hispanic community.

The magazine will celebrate this year’s honorees at a VIP Hudson Hotel Siempre Inspiran Awards Reception on September 23, hosted by Editor-in-Chief Johanna Torres and Al Rojo Vivo’s Candela Ferro, one of last year’s honorees. The event will be sponsored by Mary Kay and Yoplait and will feature a silent auction to benefit the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation, which works to eliminate cancers affecting women and ending the epidemic of violence against women.

Among other special guests will be last year’s cover star and Siempre Inspiran honoree Adamari López. López penned the introduction to this year’s magazine feature discussing how being diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago caused her to commit her life to fighting the disease. She shares: “That experience, as difficult and challenging as it was, changed me into a woman filled with positive energy toward everyone around me. I even dare say that that predicament made me a new woman.”

This year’s honorees are:

– Cover Star Myrka Dellanos - This news personality has increasingly turned her energy to humanitarian causes, including establishing Missions Reaching Out Compassionately (MROC) last year to help less fortunate women and children in the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America. Already, MROC is building a community center in Barranquilla, Colombia, and a recreation center in Choluteca, Honduras, where kids can play safely after school.

– Broadcast Star and Author Mayte Prida - Prida turned her 2001 breast cancer diagnosis into an opportunity to help others by starting the Mayte Prida Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping women and their families while undergoing the uncertainties of cancer. Prida has become one of the most prominent Hispanic advocates for women and health issues in the country today.

– Attorney, actress and former model Laura Posada - After her first son with husband New York Yankee Catcher Jorge Posada was diagnosed with Craniosynostosis 10 days after his birth, the couple established The Jorge Posada Foundation to help find a cure for the disease and support families with children affected by the condition. She admits, “Before this experience, I was much more selfish because life had been easy for me. After he was born, I realized how much you can love and care for another person.”

– TV Journalist María Elena Salinas - As co-anchor of Noticiero Univision, Salinas realized early that she had a responsibility to help educate and inform people. That’s why she has been spokesperson for the National Association of Latina Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) for the past 15 years. In this role, she motivates Hispanics to become U.S. citizens, register to vote and participate in the democratic process.

– Colombian Politician and Activist Ingrid Betancourt - This former Colombian Presidential Candidate dedicated her campaign to eradicating corruption and drug trafficking in her native country. She was recently released from six years as a hostage of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and has vowed to continue her fight. She says: “It’s no longer a time to spill blood. It’s time to drop our weapons and pick up roses instead.”

– Social Worker María D. Roberts - After years working as a social worker nationally and internationally, Roberts and her husband founded Rise Up International, an organization that seeks to empower at-risk kids in Nicaragua and across the world.

– Filmmaker Marisol González - Her documentary Behind the Wall vividly chronicles how children on the U.S.-Mexico border in Tijuana are trapped in a vicious cycle of drug dependency, abuse and prostitution. Gonzalez hopes her film will create awareness for the plight of these kids and serve as a
call-to-action for help.

The October/November issue of Siempre Mujer will be on newsstands September 25th. Also, this year, V-me, the Spanish-language network available in over six million Hispanic households, will air a one-hour Siempre Inspiran broadcast special on its show Viva Voz con Jorge Gestoso during the first week of October.”

The move is intended to demonstrate the company’s dedication to, and acknowledge the influence of, the Hispanic consumer.

Rooms To Go looks to Ms. Dellanos to help brand consumer awareness within core markets via a multi-media campaign. Rooms To Go currently has showrooms in 8 southeastern states, plus Texas, with a large presence in densely populated Hispanic communities in Miami, Florida and both Dallas and San Antonio Texas.

“Being a newswoman, Myrka Dellanos has earned the well-deserved trust and credibility of the public. Her connection with her community is strong and credible. We are excited to have Myrka as part of our team. She has a great eye and is known for her tremendous sense of style,” says Jeffrey Seaman, CEO and founder of Rooms To Go. “After spending time with Myrka, we discovered we have a lot in common, both in our approach to business and personal commitment to the communities we’re in. Rooms To Go is certainly a household name in its markets, and securing deeper ties to the Hispanic population is an important company commitment.”

Myrka Dellanos says, “I am thrilled to be part of the Rooms to Go team. I’ve watched the evolution of the company in the last couple of years and I am truly impressed with their product. I love the fact that you can have beauty, comfort and value all wrapped into one. And it will be exciting to have input in the creative design process of the furniture, an arena that I have always had a passion for. More importantly, though, I believe RTG has a genuine commitment to serve our Hispanic community and to deliver a product that can compete with the very best, yet is accessible to all.”

Purpose Money recently released the Purpose Money(SM) Financial Guide, a comprehensive resource tool developed to help educate, guide, and empower Hispanics through the U.S. financial system. The guide is an easy to read, detailed economic road map for Hispanics to begin to educate themselves on the different aspects of financial growth.

Since 2000, the Hispanic population in the United States has increased by nearly thirty percent (30%). Studies show that despite an increase in banking relationships in recent years, many Hispanic working families are less likely than other ethnic groups to have a bank account or credit history. With Myrka Dellanos as the new spokesperson for Purpose Money, and with her unique ability to identify and connect with Hispanic families, Purpose Money will be positioned as a trusted source for financial services and useful educational tools.
