“Concierto por la libertad”– Announced In A Press Conference Yesterday By Betancourt & The Mayor of Paris – Will Coincide With Hundreds of Planned Peace Marches & Concerts Across The World In Celebration of Colombian Independence Day
Scheduled To Take Place at The Trocadero Esplanade In Paris at 2PM, “Concierto por la libertad” (The Concert For Freedom) Will See Colombian Superstar Juanes Joined By Spanish Superstar Miguel Bose, French Artists Renan Luce & Michel Delpech (and More Artists to Be Announced Shortly) In a Free Acoustic Concert To Both Celebrate The Recent Release of 15 Long-Held Hostages – Including Ingrid Betancourt – And Advocate For The Return Of Thousands Of People Still Held Captive In The Jungles of Colombia
- - - - - - - -
During a press conference yesterday in Paris, Ingrid Betancourt - the former Colombian Senator and Presidential candidate recently released from six-years of captivity – announced plans to hold a special free concert in Paris on July 20th in conjunction with Colombian Independence Day. The Concert for Freedom will coincide with hundreds of similar peace concerts and marches planned throughout Colombia and across the world that will demand the release of the thousands of remaining hostages still held captive in the jungles of Colombia. Joined by the mayor of Paris, Betancourt explained the event “will be a bridge of love between France and Colombia,” and is intended to send “a message of hope for those who are still there and act as a tribute to those who will not return”
Set to take place at 2:00PM in Paris at the Trocadero Esplanade, the concert will see acoustic performances by Juanes (who has already been honored by France as a “Knight of The Ordre des Arts et des Lettres), Spanish superstar Miguel Bose, French artists Renan Luce & Michel Delpech and more performers to be announced shortly.
Known world-wide as a leading activist for peace in Colombia, Juanes was able to speak with Betancourt via a radio program the day following her release. Betancourt graciously shared that she “was one of his first fans” (having seen Juanes perform in concert and meeting the then-upcoming singer shortly before her captivity) “…and look at him now, an artist recognized by the whole world and the pride of Colombia.”
In the ensuing days, Betancourt and the multiple-Latin Grammy winner remained in contact and Juanes proposed the idea of holding an event similar to the recent Concierto Paz Sin Fronteras (The Peace Without Borders Concert) which he had organized in response to border tensions between Colombia and Venezuela. In addition to the July 20th call for the immediate release of all remaining hostages, JUANES also plans to pay tribute to the heroic Colombian soldiers who risked their own lives in the dramatic rescue effort.
Currently in the midst of a highly successful tour of Europe, Juanes will quickly fly from Paris to resume his concert schedule at a show that same evening in Locarno, Switzerland.

“BONITA”

The ALAS Organization’s “Concierto Por Los Niños” (Concert For The Children) Unites Over 380,000 On-Site Fans and Millions of TV Viewers In A Momentous Show Of Solidarity To Aid Latin America’s Most Vulnerable Children
Over Two Dozen Of Latin Music’s Biggest Superstars Such As Shakira, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé, Juan Luis Guerra, Maná, Los Tigres del Norte, Gustavo Cerati, Calle 13 & Many More Appear At Historic Free Concerts In Mexico City & Buenos Aeries That Have Been Called ‘Latin America’s Live-Aid’
“crowds gathered in two of Latin America’s most iconic capitals, the excitement contagious. Its not everyday that the region’s biggest names in entertainment gather in song and never before have they come together like this for a common cause. Ricky Martin, Shakira, Miguel Bosé-just a few of the dozens of Latin American artists hoping to use their music to launch a movement against childhood poverty in the region” – CNN
(see full CNN segment here: http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/?rn=3906861&cl=7872472&ch=4226714&src=news)
Two days after announcing that philanthropists such as Carlos Slim Helú, Howard Buffet had pledged more than $200 Million toward programs to aid impoverished children in Latin America, the ALAS (América Latina en Acción Solidaria ) organization – translated as ‘Wings’ in Spanish – brought nearly 400,000 concert fans and millions of TV viewers together through an unprecedented day of music entitled “El Concierto Por Los Niños” (The Concert For The Children.” With more than two dozen of the Latin music world’s leading superstars (such as Shakira, Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé and MANY more) taking to the stage at massive free concerts in Mexico City and Buenos Aires for an event already being dubbed by press as “Latin America’s Live Aid,” ALAS designed the historic event to inspire both public and private sector support for Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs to aid the more than 32 Million children in the region living in poverty.
“Not so long ago, Latin American artists who spoke up for social causes often risked prison, exile or far worse. What a difference a generation makes… a phalanx of Spanish-speaking pop artists headed by Colombian superstar Shakira and Spanish-Italian singer Miguel Bosé gathered to promote a new initiative to aid Latin America’s millions of poor, malnourished and undereducated children. They were joined by the world’s second-richest man, a top U.S. philanthropist and an international mob of reporters drawn by a potent cocktail of celebrity, money and power, laced with an emerging social conscience … “What’s very inspiring is to see Latin America for the first time in charge of its own issues,” said Shakira… [the] concerts, the most high-profile project yet by Latin artists to fuse charity with celebrity, are expected to draw a total audience in the hundreds of thousands. ALAS is the first Latin American organization to bring together so many prominent artists and financial impresarios behind a single cause, early childhood development assistance” – Los Angeles Times
“…billionaire Carlos Slim Helú does not seem to like appearing in public, but he apparently could not resist an invitation from the Colombian pop star Shakira and about a dozen other Latin music stars. Mr. Slim was on hand in Mexico City for the announcement of two free rock concerts to raise awareness of ALAS, a foundation started by Shakira and other musicians….The goal of ALAS, which means “wings” in Spanish, is to press business leaders and governments to finance early-childhood development programs in Latin America. The foundation claimed a major success on Thursday [as] Mr. Slim pledged $110 million to children’s programs [and] Howard Buffett pledged $85 million to existing Latin American projects. “When Shakira calls, you show up, so here I am,” said Mr. Buffett – New York Times (Sunday Business Section)
“A spectacular lineup of performers join in a call-to-action to support millions of children living in poverty in Latin America…The concert features some of Latin America’s leading artists: - New York Daily News

The Univision Television Network’s telecast of the 8th Annual Latin GRAMMY® Awards last night reached 12.6 million viewers and was the biggest broadcast ever in the history of the award show among the highly coveted Adult 18-34 demographic. According to Nielsen Media Research’s Fast NTI Ratings, the broadcast attracted 2.3 million Adults 18-34 and 2.7 million Persons 12-34, a +15% and +8% increase versus last year, respectively. Overall, Univision’s telecast attracted 6.2 million average Total Viewers.
Among Adults 18-34, the Univision telecast beat such other popular programs as ABC’s “Ugly Betty” (2,171,000); NBC’s “ER” (2,078,000); CBS’s “Survivor China” (1,889,000); Fox’s “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” (1,543,000) and “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” (1,309,000); and CW’s “Smallville” (1,253,000) and “Supernatural” (747,000).
Univision’s telecast of the award show was also an unqualified success among other important demos. This year’s show garnered the second highest audience ever among Adults 18-49 (3.8 million) and Teens 12-17 (390,000), versus previous Latin GRAMMY® broadcasts.
The broadcast was also the #1 program in its time period in a number of major markets among key demos, regardless of language. In Los Angeles, the program was #1 for the time period among Persons 2+ and in the key demos of Adults 18-34, 18-49, and Teens 12-17, beating all other stations in the market. The program was #1 among Adults 18-34 in New York, Houston, and Dallas. It was #1 among Adults 18-49 in Houston and Dallas, and it was #1 in households in Miami.
Held for the very first time in Las Vegas, the excitement of this year’s program started even before the show as thousands of screaming, enthusiastic Latin music fans lined the Green Carpet arrival area at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. The completely sold-out, capacity crowd erupted with cheers and danced in the aisles starting with the show’s electrifying opening act of superstar Ricky Martin (winner for Best Male Pop Vocal Album and Best Long Form Music Video) and one of Vegas’ most popular acts, Blue Man Group.
The energized audience was then treated to an incredible line-up of eye-popping Las Vegas style musical numbers spanning the rich spectrum of Latin music featuring Juan Luis Guerra (The evening’s leading winner for Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, Best Merengue Album, and Best Tropical Song), Calle 13 (winners for Best Urban Music Album and Best Urban Song), Pepe Aguilar (Best Ranchero Album), La 5a Estación (Best Pop Album By A Duo Or Group With Vocal), and Laura Pausini (Best Female Pop Vocal Album), and Jesse & Joy (Best New Artist), among others.
The show featured an explosive performance by the Puerto Rican reggaeton duo Calle 13 and Cuban hip-hop group Orishas, featuring the cast from the Las Vegas production of “STOMP OUT LOUD,” dancers from “HavanaNightShow,” and Arauco Indians from Colombia in native dress. Fellow reggaeton superstar Daddy Yankee performed “Ella Me Levanto” surrounded by a bevy of beauties in towering feathered headdresses from the Folies Bergere.
Another musical highlight featured Best Female Pop Vocal Album winner Laura Pausini who was joined onstage by fellow Italian and superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli. In one of the evening’s most colorful productions, Puerto Rican reggeatonera Ivy Queen performed her hit “Que Lloren” dressed as a geisha and surrounded by dancers in elaborate Japanese masks and costumes. In perhaps the most emotionally charged performance of the evening, Spanish singer Shaila Dúrcal moved the audience as she sang “Amor Eterno,” a tribute to her deceased mother, Rocío Dúrcal. One of the most interesting combinations of the show was the pairing of duranguense group Alacranes Musical and Mexican alternative band Kinky. Proving that talent runs in the family, international recording sensation Miguel Bosé performed an exciting duo with his niece Bimba. Closing the show was the night’s biggest winner Juan Luis Guerra who was accompanied on timbales by legendary percussionist Sheila E. in a rousing performance of his hit “La Travesía.”
Contributing to the program’s ratings success was no doubt Univision’s unique cross-promotional efforts by its sister networks TeleFutura and Galavisión, its Univision Radio Group, and its popular website Univision.com. The star-studded extravaganza was also broadcast offering English-language closed-captions, allowing all lovers of Latin music to enjoy this annual celebration of musical artistry.
Univision.com (keyword: Latin Grammy) was the official Spanish-language website of this year’s Latin GRAMMY® Awards. Exclusive online coverage features pre and post-show highlights that include behind-the-scenes videos, celebrity commentary, and a detailed summary of the night’s winners. Rounding out coverage, Univision Móvil also delivers pre and post-show exclusives with mobile video clips from the Green Carpet, artist interviews and behind-the-scenes action.
The 8th Annual Latin GRAMMY® Awards, co-hosted by internationally acclaimed actress/singer Lucero and Mexican comedian Eugenio Derbez, was broadcast live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on the Univision Network on Thursday, November 8th, 2007, from 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. ET/PT (7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Central).”*
