Yet residents of this Midwestern community west of Omaha could not pinpoint the trigger that sparked its City Council to join the list of U.S. municipalities crafting laws aimed at driving illegal immigrants from their town.
Residents instead describe a general escalating frustration over what many see as the federal government’s lax response to illegal immigration. It is exacerbated by the influx of workers with different customs, language and skin tone.”*

The critics are buzzing about Barcelona-based electronic act The Pinker Tones‘ new album, ‘Wild Animals‘, as the group prepares to join the Vans Warped Tour on June 25 th in Phoenix. The dynamic duo will perform an extended set each night in the Skull Candy electronic music tent on the entire 44 date tour (SEE FULL TOUR DATES LISTING BELOW).
‘Wild Animals’ features a wide array of special vocal guests including reggae soul legend Jimmy Lindsay from Cymande on “The Whistling Song” and Amparo from Spanish band Amparanoia on “Electrotumbao”. First single will be the track, “Happy Everywhere.”
“Our last album, ‘The Million Colour Revolution’, was about utopia, a projection for how we wanted the world to be,” Mister Furia explains. “‘Wild Animals’ is about reality, our interpretation of the actual world we live in. Songs like “The Whistling Song”, “24″ and “On Se Promenait” are some of our happiest and most nostalgic yet.”
Just in 2007, the group was the subject of a New York Times feature, had an A&E television special, performed on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic”, had a song featured on hit sitcoms “Ugly Betty” and “Entourage” and saw heavy video play on networks like mtvU, MTV Tr3s, Mun2, and LATV. The Pinker Tones also made a major splash at last year’s SXSW, where they performed five shows in only 36 hours and also blew away the audience at KCRW’s Sounds Eclectic Evening in Los Angeles alongside leading artists like The Shins, Lily Allen and Rodrigo and Gabriela. The Pinker Tones recent single “Karma Hunters” was also selected by national bilingual youth network Mun2 as the theme song for its popular reality show ‘Chicas Project’.
This past August, The Pinker Tones released ‘More Colours!’, an album complete with infectious remixes and collaborations featuring a stellar lineup of artists including Kinky, Nortec Collective, Zeta Bosio (Soda Stereo) and Mexican Institute of Sound. Over several national U.S. tours throughout 2007, the DJ crew brought their electrifying set to fans across the country. The New York Times even claimed that, “Unlike many electronica acts, The Pinker Tones thrive onstage.” With a live show that combines the intensity of a rock band and the excitement of a DJ set, the group is moving along on the path to global domination. The Pinker Tones have ventured from Barcelona to such faraway places as London, Caracas, Buenos Aires, Moscow, Toronto, Beijing and Johannesburg.

Writers focus on Midwest Latinos - Kansas City-based Latino Writers Collective

Contributors to the new anthology “Primera Pagina: Poetry from the Latino Heartland” — including one with ties to Wichita — say they want to express and draw attention to the Hispanic experience in the middle of the country.
“I don’t think Hispanics in the Midwest have really been able to have a voice,” said Marcelo Xavier Trillo, 30, who was raised in Wichita and participates in the Kansas City-based Latino Writers Collective.
A sense of isolation exists because there are fewer Hispanics in the Midwest than on the coasts or in the Southwest, said collective vice president Linda Rodriguez.”*

Iowa’s Gov. Culver Reacts to Immigration Raid
Tags: midwest
Iowa Governor Chet Culver immediately reacted to Monday’s raid. He says those who bring undocumented workers into the U.S. should be prosecuted.
“I’ve said repeatedly that I think that has been a problem in the Midwest and across the country. A lack of enforcement in terms of holding those companies, holding those in management accountable for what, in some cases, is exploiting the workers. So I’ve always been open to employer sanctions,” said Governor Culver.”*

The economic downturn unfolding across the United States is imposing a particularly punishing toll on Hispanics, a group that was among the primary beneficiaries of the expansion in recent years. What had been a story of broad and steady advances has given way to growing joblessness, diminishing paychecks and lost homes.
The boom in American housing generated millions of new jobs for those willing to engage in physically demanding tasks, from factory work churning out floorboards, carpeting and upholstery, to landscaping, roofing and janitorial services. Latinos occupied widening swaths of these trades and filled large numbers of relatively high-paying construction jobs.
As a great influx of Latino immigrants spread beyond the initial entryways of the Southwest into smaller cities and towns across the South and the Midwest, many found employment doing much of the unpleasant work shunned by those with better prospects.”*

Many Mexicans long ago assimilated into new lives in Nebraska, Iowa
Tags: Mexico, midwest
Today’s often-heated debate focuses mostly on recent illegal entrants from Mexico, but the 87-year-old Reyes, who arrived as a boy, shows how deep-rooted many Mexicans are in the Midwest.
According to the latest census data:
• Of the more than 130,000 Latinos who live in Nebraska, 78 percent are of Mexican ancestry. And of those, more than half are U.S.-born.
• Likewise in Iowa, about 79 percent of 113,000 Latinos are of Mexican ancestry. Of those, 64 percent are natives of this country.”*

Census: Fewer young workers - (even with immigration)
Tags: midwest, population
The number of Americans ages 25 to 44 has dropped 1.5% since 2000, shrinking the pool of young workers in some states despite a 7% increase in the country’s overall population, according to a USA TODAY analysis of Census data to be released today.
The influx of immigrants, which has contributed to more than half of the nation’s growth this decade, has not been enough to offset the aging of the nation’s 79 million baby boomers, which has depleted the ranks of young workers.
The drain on the workforce is most obvious in the Northeast and Midwest, where most of the 20 states that registered declines of 5% or more in the 25-44 age group are located.”*

Guest Voz: Hollywood Filmmaker Examines the Day-Laborer Issue From a New Angle (Latina Lista)
Tags: Film, Hollywood, Latina Lista, midwest
Jonathan Browning is a Midwest-raised actor and filmmaker who now lives in Los Angeles, California pursuing his passion. With a background in comedy, it’s not unusual for Browning to see things from a “twisted” angle. It was exactly that vision that he brings to his work and which inspired him to create a 3-minute short film called “The Job.”
In the film, Browning “twists” the situation of day-laborers in such a way that it makes people think about the issue in a real way. That Browning can accomplish this feat through humor makes his message that much more effective.”*

Chicago Based HACIA Honors CSA Group With the Professional Service Firm of the Year Award
Tags: midwest, olympics
The Hispanic American Construction Industry Association’s (HACIA) recently awarded the Professional Service Firm of the Year Award to CSA GROUP, the largest Hispanic-owned full service engineering, architectural, and construction management firm in North America. CSA Group recently attended HACIA’s 29th Annual Awards Banquet held in Chicago, IL., where it named CSA Group the recipient of this annual award. Accepting the award was president and CEO of CSA, J.J. Suarez.
“We are extremely proud to have received this recognition from HACIA, a leading institution in our Industry. I humbly accept it in the name of all our professionals.” Said Dr. Suarez after receiving the award.
CSA Group was selected based on their growth and expansion in the Midwest as well as all of North America. For over half a century, CSA Group has been diligently developing their brand to be synonymous with quality of product, quality of service, and quality of personnel.
“This was an excellent event where CSA Group was at the forefront before the members of HACIA and this event placed CSA Group front-stage before a key audience in Chicago,” said Tony Caballero, CSA’s Senior Program Manager and Chicago representative to HACIA.
CSA Group entered the Chicago market in late 2005 and created a Mentor-Protege affiliation with the well-known Chicago architectural firm, Macondo Corp. The Mentor-Protege Program (MPP) was designed to assist other minority companies in the engineering field and related businesses. CSA’s Mentor-Protege Program is a private program, based on the Federal U.S. model, designed to enhance the capabilities of small business partners by improving their ability to successfully compete and effectively execute government and private industry contracts. Since CSA entered the agreement with Macondo Corp, their relationship blossomed into an immediate growth for both organizations. CSA Group has been extremely proud of their progress with Macondo Corp and the obvious success of the Mentor-Protege Program. This award illustrated CSA’s influence and growth in the Midwest market. Consequentially, CSA Group was once again formally and officially welcomed to the Chicago market.
Founded in 1979 in Chicago, IL., HACIA’s mission was to create equal access for minority firms and to prevent discriminatory practices in the construction industry. Since then, HACIA has opened doors of opportunity for thousands of minority owned construction businesses. The organization is one of the largest in Chicago area for construction contractors, both Hispanic and non. Throughout its history, HACIA has been an advocate not only of Hispanic- owned businesses in the construction industry but has grown as a valuable resource to majority-owned firms who seek to include MBE and WBE businesses in their work. Today, HACIA’s membership represents over 140 highly qualified construction companies, professional services and construction related services in our industry.
The HACIA dinner is an annual awards event. It is recognized as the largest construction industry event in the Midwest. The awards banquet brings together members and organizational partners to celebrate the year’s accomplishments. The Awards Banquet is held in February of each year and provides an opportunity to award those members and partners who have gone the extra mile in support of HACIA.
The dinner was attended by approximately 1400 people including all of the larger construction contractors and members of various agencies. Pat Ryan, the keynote speaker, is also the head of the committee working diligently to bring the Olympics to Chicago.
It was a great opportunity to put the CSA brand at the forefront with various agencies and get our name out there. During the dinner a large screen displaying advertisements, featured CSA Groups message to the HACIA, which congratulated HACIA on their 29th Awards Banquet. During another slideshow, CSA was also able to include over twenty photos of significant projects with CSA logo embedded within the description, thereby further establishing the CSA name in the Midwest.
The banquet program also included award presentations to Harris NA, Corporate Leadership Award, Mark Morales and Cutting Edge Electric Inc took home Contractor of the Year Award, Fransisco Carrillo and The Home Depot walked away with Member of the Year Award, Rosemarie Andolino, O’Hare Modernization Program, and Phase I Runway Expansion Project received Project of the Year Awards, Rosalinda “Rusty” Castillo took the Hispanic Leadership award, and Dominic Delgado received the Past President Award.”*

“Cambio de Colores (Change of Colors) - Latinos in Missouri” is an annual three-day conference that focuses on Latino immigration to the state in particular and the Midwest in general. It is the premier event focusing on the heartland’s most important demographic and community change of the last two decades. The goal of this conference is to contribute to the smooth and sustainable integration of the new population for the benefit of all the people in Missouri and neighboring states.
Similar to other states of the Midwest and the South, the Latino population in Missouri has more than doubled in the past fifteen years. According to recent census data, Latinos or Hispanics comprise now 2.8 percent of Missourians, distributed in every county of our state. The neighboring state of Kansas has seen its Latino population grow from 3.8 percent in 1990 to 8.3 percent in 2005.
“Cambio de Colores (Change of Colors)−Latinos in Missouri: Uniting Cultures – Uniendo Culturas” will take place from Monday April 7 to Wednesday April 9, 2008, at the Stoney Creek Inn, in Columbia, Missouri. The conference will draw between 200 and 250 participants, including academic researchers and extension specialists, public and private service providers, grassroots organizations, professionals from state, local, and federal government institutions, politicians, and newcomers themselves.
The main topics of the conference are: change and integration; civil rights; education; health; and youth, families, and communities. Around forty presentations and workshops will cover issues of special relevance to make this integration process beneficial to everyone, for example: asset accumulation strategies for newcomers; inclusion and integration of Latino parents and students into school systems; best practices for prevention of diseases; cultural competency; changes in sending and receiving communities; the immigration legal and political climate; and many others.
The 2008 conference underlines the need for every stakeholder—newcomer and long-established alike—to get involved into the complex and vibrant process of social, economic, and cultural change, so as to develop a sustainable, richer, diverse, and harmonic community, especially for the benefit of the incoming generations.
The conference chair is Lisa Y. Flores, Associate Professor of Education at the University of Missouri. The Executive Coordinator is Domingo Martínez Castilla, of the University of Missouri-Columbia’s Cambio Center. The conference planning committee includes more than thirty volunteers from state public and private institutions.
Plenary speakers will be Huyen Pham, a researcher in immigration law and its effects on society, from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law; Edward A. Delgado-Romero, an expert in Multicultural Counseling and Competence, from the University of Georgia; Luis R. Torres, a Fellow with the National Institute on Drug Abuse and a researcher on Latino families, from Washington University in St. Louis. There will also be a plenary expert panel on difficult dialogues, with the participation of Roger L. Worthington, Sandra Hodge, and Paul Ladehoff, from the University of Missouri- Columbia; and another plenary expert panel, including Mary Simon Leuci, Jo Britt-Rankin, and David Baker, who will discuss the statewide resources for Latino integration offered by the University of Missouri’s Extension service,The closing session keynote speaker will be Dr. Samuel Betances, a well-known and engaging communicator on the challenge of casting away barriers to success. A Harvard graduate, he is an honored Professor Emeritus, a consultant to U.S. Presidents, CEOs, managers, community groups, clergy members, educators, and a role model for youth.
Special guests include University of Missouri System President Gary Forsee, and other University of Missouri leaders. The conference is sponsored by the University of Missouri System and its Columbia campus. Main external sponsors include the Missouri Foundation for Health.

The West Michigan Whitecaps, the Class A affiliate of the Tigers, hope to appeal to the Latin-American community’s passion for the sport.

“We’ve noticed the increase of Latin-American players on our rosters, and we’re doing what we can to help them during their stay here,” said Whitecaps CEO Lew Chamberlin. “Doing what we can is important to us. While the Democrats fight among themselves over their presidential nomination, strategists for presumptive Republican nominee John McCain are analyzing the electoral map to determine where to put their resources for the remainder of the year.
McCain insiders say several important big states should be in play, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, partly because of McCain’s special appeal to independents.
McCain strategists also argue that the Arizona senator can battle effectively for Hispanic votes in a number of states, since he has opposed draconian measures to deal with illegal workers and he has advocated a “path to citizenship” for such workers—two popular positions among Latinos.”*

USHLI, NAHP Foundation and Fundación Azteca America Partner to Increase Hispanic Higher Education
Tags: aztec, bilingual, blog, midwest, non-profit, population, student, TV Azteca
The National Hispanic Press Foundation [NHP Foundation] and Fundación Azteca America, in their continued commitment to assisting young Hispanics pursuing higher education, announced today their partnership to provide the 15th Annual Career and College Recruitment Fair of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute with Scholarship Directory CD-Roms for its student participants.
NHP Foundation and Fundación Azteca America donated 1,300 CD-Roms for distribution at this year’s conference held in Chicago during USHLI’s 26th National Hispanic Leadership Conference.
The Scholarship Directory CD-Rom contains clear, up-to-date scholarship information and college entrance advice for today’s growing population of Hispanics headed toward higher education. In addition to being distributed at conferences, career fairs, and conventions, the CD-Roms are also mailed directly to organizations, colleges and individuals who request them free of charge. Over the past two years, the NHP Foundation has distributed more than 10,000 Scholarship Directory CD-Roms.
“Compiling information and sharing it with our community is what we do best as Hispanic publishers,” said Luis Rossi, NHP Foundation Vice Chairman. “We are proud to be able to support this effort by positively impacting thousands of students in the Midwest.”
“Fundación Azteca America is proud to partner with NHP Foundation and USHLI to insure that young Latinos have the know how and the opportunities to achieve a higher education,” said Luis J. Echarte, President of Fundación Azteca America. “Our foundation is dedicated to providing information so that they can in turn make the right decisions for their future.”
According to USHLI, the mission of the conference continues to be to train a broad cross section of Hispanic leaders by promoting education and unity, providing opportunities for advanced leadership skills development, and creating a new generation of servant leaders based on the values of cultural pride, integrity, and empowerment.
“This conference is a great opportunity to have Latino role models and those organizations that support our efforts reach out to our youth by promoting education,” said Juan Andrade, USHLI President and Executive Director.
Aside from information on scholarship opportunities, NHP Foundation also offers information to prospective college students on services, organizations, high school preparation, college entrance test preparation, government loans and local scholarships that will help them secure their education.
The NHP Foundation also facilitates the distribution of this information in detail through its website at www.scholarshipsforhispanics.org as well as on its blog at www.scholarshipsforhispanics.blogspot.com. According to Thomas Oliver, NHP Foundation President and CEO, the website attracts tens of thousands of hits and thousands of unique visitors each week.
The foundation’s online presence compliments its “Educate” print tabloid and its CD-Rom platforms. In partnership with Fundación Azteca America’s planned public service announcements set to air this spring, the NHP Foundation will add a broadcast platform to drive awareness. NHP Foundation is currently seeking title sponsors for an updated Scholarships Directory 2008 Edition. For sponsorship information, please contact NHP Foundation President and CEO Thomas Oliver at (202) 662-7416 or by e-mail at tomoliver@hispanicpress.org.

2009 NCLR Annual Conference Moved to Chicago
Tags: activist, La Raza, midwest, NCLR, student
The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., announced today that Chicago will host the 2009 NCLR Annual Conference. Earlier this year, the NCLR Board of Directors voted to move the 2009 Annual Conference from Kansas City, Missouri, in response to a request from NCLR’s Kansas City Affiliates, who were concerned about the actions of Kansas City’s mayor in appointing a member of a vigilante group, the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, to an official position. The NCLR Board of Directors subsequently voted to move the Conference to another location. To ensure that the event remained in the Midwest, NCLR selected Chicago as the host city. The Conference will be held July 25-28 at the new McCormick Place West Building. Chicago has hosted the NCLR Annual Conference three times before, most recently in 1997.
“Chicago is a culturally diverse city with a strong Latino community that embraces the values our nation was built on, and we are excited to bring our 2009 Annual Conference to a city that appreciates and recognizes the contributions of Latinos,” said Janet Murguía, NCLR President and CEO.
“We are pleased to welcome this prestigious organization to our facility in 2009,” said Juan Ochoa, Chief Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority. “The flexibility and functionality of our new state-of-the-art West Building is perfectly suited for organizations like NCLR. We wish them great success at McCormick Place.”
“We are especially thankful to Juan Ochoa for his efforts to help us bring the Conference to this great city. We have strong ties to this city as the home of 12 NCLR Affiliates that work daily to create opportunities and open doors for Latinos,” added Murguía.
“On behalf of Mayor Richard M. Daley, Chicago is pleased to welcome the National Council of La Raza and its members to our world-class city and spectacular new West Building,” said Tim Roby, President and CEO of the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau. “We very much look forward to the opportunity to help make the 2009 Annual Conference an incredible success for NCLR and Chicago.”
The NCLR Annual Conference is the single largest gathering of its kind in the Hispanic community, serving as the meeting ground for more than 20,000 community organization leaders, activists, and volunteers; elected and appointed officials; members of the corporate, philanthropic, and academic communities; senior citizens; college students; and youth.”*

Patrol heads north in search of 6,000 agents
Tags: border, border patrol, midwest
The U.S. Border Patrol is looking for you — to work for them.
The Border Patrol will be recruiting Saturday at the Hyatt Regency Downtown as part of a national effort to hire 6,000 agents by the end of next year.
“Border security affects everybody,” said Lloyd Easterling, a supervisory agent based in Washington, D.C. “This is an opportunity for us to go out and find people interested in law-enforcement work.”
But a local Latino leader thinks the agency is here because it wants to recruit Midwesterners who are frightened by immigration and eager to halt Latinos at the U.S.-Mexican border.”*

Crash won’t keep immigrants from taking bus to Mexico

They were typical of the dozens of Mexicans who regularly step off the bus at a Waukegan shopping center filled with cowboy hats and corn snacks. At least twice a day, every day, Tornado buses stop at the Belvidere Discount Mall along Illinois Highway 120 as they take passengers from Mexico to Milwaukee.
A fatal crash last week cast a spotlight on the popular buses, which have long been a link for Latinos between burgeoning immigrant communities such as Waukegan and their hometowns in Mexico. For more than a decade, Tornado buses have crisscrossed the American South and Midwest, catering to a Spanish-speaking clientele by playing Spanish movies and stopping at Mexican restaurants along U.S. highways that lead south to the border.”*

Iowa concern over illegal immigration
Tags: midwest, population
Nearly a quarter of South Sioux City’s 12,000-strong population is Hispanic, after an influx of immigrants to work in local meat-packing plants.
The changing racial make-up of the Sioux City area helps explain why immigration has become one of the most fiercely contested campaign issues ahead of January’s Iowa caucuses, which mark the start of the 2008 presidential nomination process.
Sioux City is one of numerous communities across Iowa and surrounding Midwest states that have experienced a surge in Hispanic immigrants - many of whom entered the country illegally.”*

HACR Young Hispanic Corporate Achievers(TM) Honored

The Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR) — a coalition of the nation’s most influential community-based organizations — honored 28 young professional executives at its inaugural Young Hispanic Corporate Achievers™ (YHCA) program. Sponsors of the program are Comcast Communications, the Ford Motor Company and Phillip Morris USA.
Candidates from across the country were nominated by their respective companies and selected after a review of the candidates’ accomplishments, established leadership qualities, industry expertise, education and employment experiences, as well as a demonstrated commitment to their communities. The candidates are between 25-40 years of age, of Latino origin and employed by a Fortune 500 company or HACR Corporate Member.
“We have found that a company’s success is being increasingly influenced by their inclusion of professionals from the growing Hispanic population,” said HACR President & CEO Carlos Orta. “It is important for us to recognize these young professionals who are helping to fuel the engines that drive our country’s economy.”
HACR’s research and findings reinforce the need for a continued effort to increase Latino representation in corporate leadership roles. As the largest and fastest-growing ethnic group in the United States, Hispanics represent over 14 percent of the population and 12.5 percent of all employees in the labor force. Their imprint on U.S. culture and business is undeniable. More companies are recognizing the need to incorporate their perspectives at employee, managerial and governance levels to bring fresh ideas, new energy and opportunities to an ever-changing diverse marketplace.
The awardees took part in a one-day leadership development and networking program and were formally recognized as role models for other young, corporate professionals by their respective companies, HACR and invited leaders from the nation’s capital.
