“MTV Tr3s programming and on-air advertising has received eight Imagen Foundation Awards for positive portrayals of young Latinos. The 23rd Annual Imagen Awards take place Thursday, August 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Nominated in the Best Variety or Reality Show category is “Mi TRL Awards,” an annual awards show that recognizes and honors the people and music that make “Mi TRL” the “must watch” show for U.S. Latinos and sends winners home with a shiny “Gallo” (rooster) trophy. The nominated show was packed with some of today’s hottest artists, such as RBD, Wisin y Yandel, Will Smith, Jessica Alba, Menudo, Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown, and Jaslene Gonzalez and Zuleyka Rivera performing, accepting and presenting awards, along with a surprise appearance by Diddy who opened the show to the delight of the fans who attended the awards show.

“Beyond Borders: An MTV Tr3s Immigration Forum,” a network special that gave voice to Latino youth who were ready to go beyond the politics and rhetoric of the immigration debate, was nominated for Best National Informational Programming. The historic, first-ever of its kind on network TV event, brought together artists such as Ana Ortiz, Calle 13’s Residente and Malverde; young people from Cal State L.A; and U.S. Congressman Xavier Becerra to explore solutions to the immigration crisis and discuss its impact on their families, education and everyday lives. It was hosted by journalist Gustavo Arellano.

MTV Tr3s’ multiplatform music discovery initiative, “Descubre & Download” earned two nominations in the Best On-Air Advertising category for projects with newcomer Colby O’Donis and West-coast rapper Malverde.

Also earning nominations in Best On Air Advertising were three MTV Tr3s “Tu Pride” entries, “Sylvestre,” “Elan,” and “Ruben.” “Tu Pride” is a series of mini-documentaries about young Latinos growing up today with a mix of cultural influences.

“The entire MTV Tr3s familia is dedicated to the positive and uplifting portrayal of the U.S. Latino experience and we are humbled to be recognized with these nominations by the Imagen Foundation,” said Lucia Ballas-Traynor, Senior Vice President and General Manager, MTV Tr3s.

El Chicano Rocks On! - After all these years, ‘band’ of friends from East LA - El Chicano - still keepin’ it real.

“Author Henry David Thoreau once said, “Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.”

Those famous words have never been more appropriate than when telling the story of Latin rock originators El Chicano — a band of friends from East L.A. who, practically overnight in 1970, went from nightclub jammin’ to the world stage.

Performing live at the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Latin Food Festival and 10th annual Menudo Cook-Off on Sunday, June 1, at Stramler Park — most fans of the band might be taken aback when they hear their story. “*

La India, Pitbull, and Menudo … Celebrate Carnaval Miami at Little Havana’s Calle Ocho - Sunday, March 16 (wish I was going)

“It’s mid-March, which means it’s time for Carnaval Miami’s legendary Calle Ocho street party. The free event — this year celebrating its 30th anniversary — attracts more than a million people from all over the world, making it the largest Spanish-language music festival in the nation.

It all began in 1978, when the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana organized a Cuban-style carnival to highlight Miami’s growing Hispanic heritage. But what originally started out as a local celebration of Cuban culture quickly grew to encompass music genres from all of Latin America.”*

Self-Reliance Foundation and Hispanic Communications Network Announce Launch of ConCiencia

Filed under [ Business ] [ Hispanic News ] [ Marketing ] [ Media ] [ Press Releases ] [ Blogante Business ]
Tags: , , , , , ,

“The Self-Reliance Foundation (SRF) and the Hispanic Communications Network (HCN) announced today the launch of ConCiencia, a newswire service in Spanish funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Each week, ConCiencia will provide and release science and health news to all Hispanic media outlets throughout the country.

According to HCN President Carlos Alcazar, “Downsizing and consolidation in the media has left few resources for local media to use to offer science information to their Latino audiences.” Alcazar hopes ConCiencia will enhance the ability of local Spanish-language outlets to provide this vital science and health information that the Hispanic community needs.

Bob Russell, Science Advisor with the Self-Reliance Foundation noted that “Latinos currently achieve lower-than-average math and science scores in public schools and are significantly underrepresented in science and engineering professions.” Russell adds that is why it is critical to provide Hispanic media with an ongoing source of high-quality science news tailored to meet the needs and interests of Hispanics.

ConCiencia’s launch took place today at the National Press Club located downtown Washington, D.C. Attendants to the event include members from the local Hispanic media, Latino community leaders, educational and scientific organizations, among others. Keynote speakers include Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s 2006 Scientist of the Year Dr. Ines Cifuentes and Xavier Serbia, news writer and former Menudo member.

Distribution for ConCiencia’s news products includes newspaper articles, radio segments and online news. Newspaper articles will be distributed in collaboration with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) and other news organizations. ConCiencia’s radio segments will be distributed by HCN through their radio network of over 250 Spanish-language radio stations nationwide reaching millions of listeners each week. ConCiencia also plans on distributing its content over the most heavily-used Hispanic websites. A comprehensive editorial/news gathering process is in place to assure the accuracy, accessibility, and relevance of the science that is presented. Science news used in the service will be gathered from federal research agencies, scientific societies and their publications, and English-language science news services. All feeds will be disseminated in Spanish and edited for Latino interest. ConCiencia offers all its content at no cost to all Spanish-language media outlets that wish to publish it.

ConCiencia’s staff is comprised by renowned journalists and scientists. Robert L. Russell, PhD., with more than twenty years of experience in science education, serves as Science Advisor to ConCiencia. The supervision and coordination of the content production and news gathering processes will be supervised by journalist and media producer Karina Flores-Hurley, who serves as the Chief Editor of the project. Award-winning journalist Isabel Morales serves as the writer and editor of ConCiencia’s news, and Alicia Santiago, PhD., serves as senior science researcher.

ConCiencia’s staff members also rely on the expert advice of educational media and science advisory committee members such as SACNAS’ Executive Director, Judit Camacho, NRDC’s Science Center Director, Gabriela Chavarría, among others.

The audience for Spanish-language media is vast and growing. There are currently more than 1,500 Spanish-language newspapers in print in the U.S. with a total circulation of over 42 million copies. Hispanics also represent the fastest-growing Internet market. Nearly half of Hispanics currently have Internet access at home and spend 9.8 hours per week online, compared to 8.1 hours for non-Hispanics.

But back then, Escalante’s mother, Jacqueline Cubillos, was a huge fan of Menudo when she was growing up in her native Union City.

“Female fans are about to start swooning like it’s 1984 — if MTV has anything to do with it.

The music/reality channel is betting a remixed, remade Menudo will resurrect — or is it revive? — the boy-band craze that seems to regularly cycle through pop music. Making Menudo debuted last week, chronicling the high-pressure road to fame of 15 young males — including Sugar Land teen Juan Camillo González, who attends Clements High School.

“It seemed like something fun that I wanted to try,” said González, 17, who goes by “JC” when the cameras are rolling. He called just before an appearance last week on MTV’s TRL.”*

“Remember the song, “Like a Cannonball” from the film, Cannonball Run 2? Or how about the remake of “If You’re Not Here?” Perhaps, “Livin’ La Vida Loca” and “The Cup of Life (La Copa de la Vida)” and the Latin heartthrob who sang both of them, Ricky Martin. Well, before Martin became the swoon-worthy solo artist that he now is, he first got a taste of fame as part of the all-Latino male five-member singing group, Menudo.

Aside from Martin, Menudo also produced other talents like Marc Anthony and Robi Draco Rosa. Following a successful run in the `80s, Menudo went dormant for several years until now. MTV is bringing back the boy band via its reality search, Making Menudo, which begins tonight.”*

SEIU TESTIFIES BEFORE HOUSE JUDICIARY SUBCOMMITTEE AGAINST ILLEGAL USCIS IMMIGRANT SERVICE FEE HIKE - SEIU TESTIFICA ANTE SUBCOMITÉ JUDICIAL DE LA CÁMARA CONTRA ALZA ILEGAL DE TARIFAS DE SERVICIOS DE INMIGRACIÓN DE USCIS

“Today, Rhadames Rivera, Vice President of SEIU Healthcare Local 1199 UHE, testified before the House Subcommittee on Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security and International Law on the negative impact that the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) fee hike will have on the union’s immigrant members. Rivera warned that thousands of immigrant homecare, hospital, nursing home, and other healthcare providers will be priced out of the citizenship application process as a result of the inflated fees.

“Our members work hard to care for some of the most vulnerable members of our society,” began Rivera. “Yet USCIS’s choice to increase fees beyond any other comparable government service fee sends the message that we do not want these critical healthcare workers to participate in our society. We’ll take their work, but we’ll deny them access to citizenship””the cornerstone of the American Dream.”

Citing the dramatic July 30th fee hike””which raised naturalization fees from $400 to $675””Rivera warned that scheduled appointments for 1199’s Citizenship Program already dropped by 50 percent in August.

“Since families often apply for citizenship at the same time, the resulting $2,025 cost for a family of four is simply insurmountable. We often learn of workers using vacation pay or even tax refunds to pay for naturalization application fees. Pricing some of our nation’s hardest workers out of their rightful chance to participate fully in U.S. civic life is shameful,” continued Rivera.

“We’re moving in the wrong direction as a nation if we turn citizenship into a luxury that is only available to an elite few,” added SEIU Executive Vice President Eliseo Medina. “Discrimination based on wealth is not an American value. It’s time to roll back this fee hike and stand up for our heritage as an inclusive democracy, and a proud nation of immigrants.”

Today’s Congressional testimony follows a federal lawsuit that SEIU filed against USCIS in August for illegally raising immigration fees beyond basic processing costs. Click here to read Rivera’s full testimony, and here to learn more about the federal lawsuit against USCIS.
###
With 1.9 million members, SEIU is the fastest-growing union in North America. Focused on uniting workers in three sectors to improve their lives and the services they provide, SEIU is the largest health care union, including hospitals, nursing homes, and home care; the largest property services union, including building cleaning and security; and the second largest public employee union.”

“Latinos are assimilating, but in their own way, keeping much of their identity. Tamales at Christmas. Turkey and menudo at Thanksgiving. English at work and Spanish at home. Dual loyalties to the San Diego Chargers and Guadalajara Chivas. The Fourth of July. Cinco de Mayo.

“Latinos are ending the concept of the proverbial racial salad,” wrote renowned journalist and writer Jorge Ramos in his book, “The Latino Wave: How Hispanics Are Transforming Politics in America.”

The big difference between European and Latino immigrants, according to Ramos and some sociologists, is that Hispanics live next to their countries of origin, allowing them to maintain ties with their family, culture and language.”

MENUDO’S LEGACY

Menudo was the mega group that started the boy group craze. In 1977, Edgardo Diaz formed the first Menudo in Puerto Rico. The original group consisted of two sets of brothers: Carlos, Oscar, and Ricky Melendez and Nefty and Fernando Sallaberry.

The group targeted pre-teens and young teens and had a policy that as any member turned 16 he would be replaced by a new member. More than 30 different boys made up Menudo over its years of existence. This made Menudo the only truly revolving group and gave the brand staying power in its young market.

Menudo released 32 albums and sold over 20,000,000 records worldwide.

Over the years, Menudo toured worldwide and holds numerous attendance records including 13 consecutive sellout performances at Radio City Music Hall, 200,000 fans at the soccer stadium in Rio de Janeiro, and over 500,000 at a Mexico City concert.

RICKY MARTIN REMEMBERS HIS MENUDO DAYS

During a rare break from his Blanco Y Negro tour in Guadalajara, Mexico, Ricky Martin commented about his start with Menudo and what it meant for him: “Its incredible for me - a very important time in my life. It was the beginning of my career, it was my schooling. In Menudo I learned what was discipline. I learned what it was to work in a way so intense in order to achieve something I wish all who are involved in this project from the technical side to the talent side all the best. To the talent, take risks. Risk it, even if you think its ridiculous Just be yourself and dont fear what people will say - I think thats the key to success.” “

“Menudo is being revived by MTV, and the call went out for bilingual Latino teens to audition for the new band. The first casting session was held last Saturday at Plaza Mexico, a Latino shopping mall on Imperial Highway in Lynwood with a colonial architectural theme that must remind Arriaga of home.

The man may have missed his chance the first time around, but now his 15-year-old son, also named Guillermo, had a shot at the same dream. Father and son made the short trip from their nearby South Gate home and got in line. Guillermo wore a No. 13 and an oversized black T-shirt that draped below his knees. He gave a brief performance before a three-judge panel that included singer Frankie J and high-powered manager Johnny Wright Backstreet Boys, NSync, Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake. Backstage, he answered questions for MTV Tr3s, the networks new bilingual channel, which is filming the whole selection process for a reality series titled “Road to Menudo,” to begin airing May 12.”
