"The election may be 10 weeks away, but Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez is almost certain to win a second four-year term in the county's most powerful post because no big-name opponents are expected to launch campaigns before Tuesday's noon deadline.

Alvarez's sole challenger is Helen Williams, a former teacher who reported raising $50 by the end of March, compared to his $720,000."

Jerry Rivera also performed his hit song “Cuesta Abajo,” while dancers performed the famous Argentine tango with a tropical twist both on stage and in the audience.

The highlight of the night was when José “Pepe” Díaz, a member of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, read a letter from Mayor Carlos Alvarez, declaring November 1 as “MEGA TV Day” in Miami-Dade County. Shortly after that, Miami Beach’s Vice Mayor, Michael Gongora, read a letter from Mayor David Derner that named November 1 “MEGA TV Day” for Miami Beach.

“This celebration is a great opportunity to recognize everyone who contributed to MEGA TV’s success in key cities of the United States,” said Cynthia Hudson - Fernández, Chief Creative Officer and Executive Vice President of Mega TV. “Through their support and hard work, MEGA TV continually delivers high quality programming that has a special focus on accurate investigative journalism and entertainment that is suitable for all families. Moreover, this partnership enables us to not only build on the station’s record setting growth in South Florida, but it also allows us to become a major player in the competitive U.S. Hispanic television market.”

Since launching a year and a half ago, MEGA TV has been the fastest-growing television station in the history of the South Florida television market, achieving unprecedented recognition from viewers in record time.

John De Armas, Vice President of DirecTV, was also in attendance and surprised guests with a free year of service from DirecTV Más.

“As the home of MEGA TV, Miami deserved the brightest and most spectacular party,” he said. “We are proud to be able to offer this excellent television station to our Latin audience and we are extremely pleased to welcome MEGA TV into the DirecTV family.”
