Boom Skips Toiling Porters on Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

“But instead of carrying news or fresh seafood delicacies from the coast, they haul propane tanks, camping equipment and four days of food for wealthy tourists from worlds away — all for as little as $8 a day.

Peruvian law permits only 500 people to set out each day on the Inca Trail to Peru’s top tourist destination, Machu Picchu — and nearly 300 of them are porters. Many complain that they are underpaid for their backbreaking labor.”*

Machu Picchu ‘ransacked 40 years before its discovery’ - new research claims

“One of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, the citadel, hidden by clouds 8,000 feet above sea level, has become a pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of travellers every year. Historians have always thought that it lay undiscovered for centuries after the fall of the Incan Empire in the 1530s, until being brought to the attention of the modern world by an American explorer, Hiram Bingham, in 1911. But a research team including a British scientist believe that “the lost city of the Incas” could have been “discovered” more than four decades previously, by a German adventurer who looted the site with the help of the Peruvian government.”*

A Peruvian specialty gets pride of place - MACHU PICCHU CHARCOAL CHICKEN & GRILL in Boston

Tags: , ,

“The magic number at Machu Picchu Charcoal Chicken & Grill is 24. That’s how many hours their rotisserie chicken soaks in a secret brew before it’s slid onto a spit and roasted over hot coals to a succulent, smoky-to-the-bone perfection.

Twenty-four is also about the number of seconds that it takes to walk to Rosy and Hugo Cerna’s other restaurant, also dubbed Machu Picchu. Why open a second Peruvian restaurant a tamale’s throw from the first?

“Because we really wanted to serve pollos a la brasa,” says Rosy Cerna about their charcoal chicken. “It’s a national dish in Peru, but you never serve it at a restaurant where you have all the other Peruvian dishes like we have at Machu Picchu. Pollos a la brasa has to have a restaurant of its own.”*

Soundtrack of home - Miguel Harth-Bedoya explores the music of his native Peru and finds treasures to share in a series of concerts by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra

“When Americans think of Latin music, it’s usually dreaming about Argentine tango, Brazilian rhythms or Mexican mariachi.

It’s a prickly issue for Miguel Harth-Bedoya, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra music director and a native Peruvian. For him, the soundtrack of his homeland — what he calls Andean music — has an immensely rich and equally valuable tradition, encompassing the cultural treasures of Machu Picchu, the pre-Columbian Incan ruins, as well as the adjoining Inca Trail — those hundreds of miles of ancient roads that connect parts of Peru with its mountainous South American neighbors.”*

The corporation could be working in Machu Picchu as early as January 2008, provided that Peru’s Ministry of Transport and Communication (MTC) and the Supervisory Authority for Investment in Public Transportation Infrastructure (OSITRAN) work out the contract Andean Railways is to sign.”*

Yale to return Peruvian artefacts

“Yale University has agreed to return to Peru thousands of Inca relics that were excavated at Machu Picchu from 1911-15 by a history professor, Hiram Bingham.

Peru demanded the artefacts back last year, saying it agreed to their removal on condition they would be returned.

More than 4,000 pieces, including mummies, ceramics and bones were taken to the US university.”

Peruvian food that’s worth the trip

“In recent years, Jorge Chavez International Airport has been so spectacularly rejuvenated that it inadvertently reinforces an old cliche about the city it serves: Lima — the City of Kings, the capital of Peru, home to 9 million people — is merely a way station for travelers en route to Cuzco, Machu Picchu, Iquitos, Lake Titicaca and Peru’s other celebrated attractions.

As to what they’re missing, they haven’t a clue. Not merely is old Lima rich in history, but new Lima is so rich gastronomically as to put just about all the world’s other cities to shame. Today it is not merely advisable but mandatory to come to Lima para la cocina: for the food.”

Peru demands return of Machu Picchu treasures from Yale

“But now Yale has been tainted by a bitter and public two-year-old dispute over about 5,000 artifacts that Bingham removed from Machu Picchu and took to the Yale campus in New Haven, Conn.

University and Peruvian officials hope to settle the spat in the coming weeks, especially now Machu Picchu has been selected as one of the new seven wonders of the world in a global popularity contest unveiled on July 7.

Peruvian archaeologists and historians warn, however, that they will complain strongly and protest loudly unless Yale returns all the objects to Peru, not just museum-quality artifacts, as the university is proposing.”

“The Incas built their mysterious city here to be closer to the gods. It was placed so high in the clouds, at 7,700 feet, that the conquering Spaniards never found or destroyed it.

Visitors to Machu Picchu see well-preserved ruins hidden among the majestic Andes: palaces, baths, temples, tombs, sundials and farming terraces, along with llamas that roam among hundreds of gray granite houses….”

Peru Machu Picchu mudslides strand 3,200 tourists

“Mudslides caused by heavy rains in Peru’s southern Andes stranded 3,200 tourists at the Machu Picchu Inca citadel on Thursday as mud and rocks blocked the railway in and out of the site, train operators said.

The nationalities of the tourists were not immediately known, but no one was thought to be injured, Peru Rail spokeswoman Joanna Boyen said.”

Nickelodeon Heads (Further) South - New York Times

The fate of the highly successful “Dora the Explorer” preschool empire - more than $3 billion in retail sales to date - is about to rest on the slender shoulders of Dora’s cousin, Diego. New episodes of “Dora” are on hold, save for a few hourlong specials, while the creative team works on “Go, Diego, Go!,” the franchise’s first spin-off. And they’re working hard.

Climbing Machu Picchu may seem like an unlikely job requirement for producing animated television for preschoolers, but Diego is an animal rescuer - albeit an 8-year-old one - and the writers and producers, traveling to Peru for research, chose immersion in his imagined world. “Mudslides, fire ants, being nuzzled by llamas, going to markets, living in huts, going to animal rescue centers,” said Brown Johnson, the executive creative director for Nickelodeon Preschool Television.
