MasterCard Launches New U.S. Hispanic Marketing Campaign
Tags: advertising campaign, Lucha libre, Univision
Integrated marketing campaign includes new Priceless advertising and the re-launch of mastercardenespanol.com
Purchase, NY, July 8, 2008 – This month, MasterCard launched an integrated Hispanic marketing campaign featuring a 30-second Priceless television execution entitled, “Luchador.” Additionally, the brand re-launched mastercardenespanol.com, its Spanish language U.S. consumer website.
Luchador follows a Hispanic wrestler, leveraging the Mexican tradition of Lucha Libre wrestling, as he utilizes his credit and debit MasterCard cards to pay for beauty services that keep the retro icon’s style current. Luchador hit the airwaves across the country on Hispanic television in 11 key U.S. markets where there is the highest concentration of Hispanic consumers: Chicago; Dallas; Harlingen, Tex.; Houston; Los Angeles; Miami; New York; Phoenix; Sacramento; San Antonio; and San Francisco. The brand will also make use of radio and on-line advertising to extend the campaign across relevant channels.
Additionally, MasterCard revamped its website mastercardenespanol.com, improving its functionality and content to better appeal to Hispanic consumers. The new site offers a culturally-relevant online financial destination for U.S. Hispanics and provides information on MasterCard products and services. The site features information on why MasterCard is a better way to pay than cash; tips on building credit history and managing finances; as well as video content from media partner Univision.
“Hispanics comprise the fastest growing population in the U.S. and as a brand it is important for us to develop a genuine connection with them,” said Chris Jogis, Vice President, US Brand Development, MasterCard Worldwide. “According to MasterCard research, 75 percent of Hispanics say that cash is their preferred method of payment. We would like to provide Hispanics with information on the benefits of credit and debit MasterCard for their everyday purchases, from convenience and earning rewards to building credit scores and record keeping.”
In addition to the advertising, MasterCard will also be involved in a series of grassroots events which are in currently in development in several key cities.
Luchador consists of the following sequence of events:
The television spot opens with Luchador, guarded on each side by members of his entourage, ready for a haircut at a trendy salon.
Voice over: Modern new cut: $40 on your MasterCard card.
He moves to a massage chair and is ready for a pedicure
Voice over: Manicure and pedicure, quite popular these days: $55
Different parts of his body are then prepared for a body wax.
Voice over: Full body wax, the latest national trend: $95
He admires his “new look” in the mirror and leaves the salon flanked by his two supporters. However, in true Lucha Libre fashion, neither his new haircut nor his new look can be seen as Luchadors never reveal their face in public.
Voice over: Getting hip to the times: priceless
Creative for the MasterCard Priceless campaign is handled by McCann Erickson/New York: Joyce King Thomas, EVP, Chief Creative Officer; Tim Dillingham, SVP, Creative Director; Mark Gonzalez, Creative Director; Greg Lotus, SVP, Executive Producer.

Lucha libre - wrestling, Mexican style - is coming to London’s Roundhouse
Tags: Lucha libre, mexico city
Sitting opposite me in a small, wood-panelled office in his house in the posh suburbs of Mexico City is the country’s most famous lucha libre wrestler, El Hijo del Santo. He is behind an expensive-looking desk, dressed in a smart suit and white shirt. He looks every inch the successful businessman - but his head is completely encased in a silver mask.
The phenomenon that is lucha libre is about to hit London when, on July 4, a clutch of top luchadores - including El Santo - comes to the Roundhouse. The sport involves men, often wearing masks and capes, wrestling each other mano-a-mano or in teams of up to four. Sometimes they dress as women and often there are dwarfs involved. It is Mexico’s biggest sport after football”*

Lucha libre rocks, rules for aficionados
Tags: Lucha libre
Like its North American wrestling roots, lucha libre, or free fight, is filled with tag-team assaults, theatrical insults, choreographed kicks, aerial flights, complex holds, rolls, slaps and jumps. An entertainment mainstay in Mexico since the 1930s, the audience at the Phoenix event is predominantly Hispanic. They’re engaged and energetic as they wag their thumbs down, shout insults and wave U.S. and Mexican flags. Some hold up neon posters “100% Rudo” or “I heart Payaso Asesino” when the luchadores, full of machismo, strut out into the ring.
The wrestlers range in age from young teens to late 30s and include the patriotic ponytailed Officer Dave Taylor, aka “La Migra,” to the handsome, lithe, unmasked Sergio Vega. “*

When Mexican wrestlers hit U.S. rings, cultures unite
Tags: border, Lucha libre
It’s American-style wrestling vs. lucha libre wrestling, and this may be one of the places left in the Valley where people from both sides of the border celebrate what they have in common, even if it is wrestling.
“Coming to wrestling events, it’s real easy to get along,” said Glenda Jarboe of Tempe.
Jarboe was at the April event to watch her daughter wrestle yes, women also wrestle - and she, too, was struck by the camaraderie in the room.
“No fighting. Just people having a good time.”"*

LATINO FILM FEST: Que Viva La Lucha
Tags: book, documentary, Film, Lucha libre, Tijuana
When talking about his new documentary about Lucha Libre in Tijuana, “Que Viva La Lucha,” filmmaker Gustavo Vazquez breaks down the fighters according to technicos (the good guys), rudos (the bad guys), exoticos (the flamingly gay guys) and minis (the little people), and explains why the sport is a living, breathing comic book that he calls “therapy for the poor.”"*

New gay luchador makes debut at Dallas Pride parade
Tags: blog, Lucha libre, Mexico
“For those who are closet Lucha Libre fans, a new luchador appeared on the Dallas scene Sunday during the annual Dallas Gay parade ”” Santo Gay! According to his blog (sisoyglbt.blog.com/), he’s the first gay Lucha Libre luchador announcer (say that fast five times). Because it just so happened that the Gay parade fell on Sept. 16, Mexico’s Independence Day, Santo Gay reports that in honor of the day he played the song “El Rancho Grande” over the sound system between parade entries. He said people danced and even let loose some gritos (loose translation: whooped it up).”

Coca-Cola and Toyota hold the title sponsorship of Viva Los Dodgers this year while TimeWarner Cable is the official media sponsor. “Viva Los Dodgers could not have reached its current level of success without the support of our sponsors,” said Dodger Chief Operating Officer Marty Greenspun. “Each brand has collaborated with the Dodgers to provide an atmosphere of family fun that celebrates Hispanic heritage in Los Angeles.”
Other long-time sponsors of Viva Los Dodgers include the Auto Club of Southern California, Cacique, Carls Jr., Las Palmas, Mastercard, 76 and US Bank. “Hispanidad, a division of Heinrich Marketing, Inc., has received the bronze Summit Creative Award for its innovative and effective “Lucha Libre” campaign for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), aimed at increasing seatbelt usage within the state’s Hispanic community.
“Low seatbelt usage among the Hispanic population has emerged as a significant public safety issue,” said Laura Sonderup, director of Hispanidad. “It was essential for us to communicate the importance of this message in a way that was creative, emotional and, most importantly, culturally relevant to Colorado’s Hispanic audience.”
For “Lucha Libre”, Hispanidad developed and implemented an integrated media relations and communications campaign which included the following:
* special events and ticket giveaways to promote the feature film, “Nacho Libre,” and connect seatbelt messages with Hispanic movie audiences;
* bilingual press conference with distribution of bilingual press kits;
* Spanish public service announcements; and
* partnerships with local law enforcement groups. This collaborative approach resulted in mainstream and Hispanic media coverage, as well as grass-roots, community outreach. The three-month campaign ran in 2006.
“We launched Lucha Libre to address the cultural differences that may lead to the higher number of Hispanic deaths and serious injuries on our highways,” said Gabriela Vidal, CDOT Safety and Traffic Engineering Branch Manager. “We believe that increasing awareness among the Hispanic community will result in greater seat belt use and save lives.”
The Summit Creative Awards recognize creative excellence in small and medium-sized advertising agencies from around the world, with annual billings of $25 million or less. Over the last decade, the competition has established itself as the premier arbiter of creative excellence for firms of this size.

Tags: children, library, Lucha libre
“Small children usually look up their heroes and consider them larger-than-life figures.
But for dozens of children who were lined up outside Waukegan Public Library Sunday afternoon, lifting of the eyes was not required.
Especially when a 50-inch Mexican wrestler is standing alongside.”

On Second Life, the Sprint Center Goes Latino - (Virtual Hispanic Marketing?) - Kansas City
Tags: basketball, blog, Lucha libre, Telemundo
“The Sprint Center opened a few days ago – on Second Life, a Sims knockoff. The real deal won’t open for another 173 days.
Sprint is marketing the cyber arena “exclusively” to Latin music fans and will stream concerts from the Sprint-sponsored Telemundo reality TV show, Concierto Clandestino. Sounds like Second Lifers are getting an even rawer deal than Kansas Citians. No Big 12 basketball tournament. No High School Musical on ice. Not even lucha libre.”

“Most journalists would say they have a stack of story ideas piling up back at the office. Award winning reporter Laura Castañeda has them, along with a dream to embark on new adventures.
For her, it was unveiling the story behind Tijuana’s legendary Miguel Lopez, or better known as masked Mexican wrestler Lucha Libre.
Having worked for mainstream media over the years, she understands that most ideas, or leads, can pile up into structures with a great wealth of intriguing and insightful stories that go unsaid, especially along the U.S. Mexico border.”

“The legend of Santo, El Enmascarado de Plata the silver masked man will reach new heights in the animated action series currently being produced for Cartoon Network. The legendary Mexican wrestler, El Hijo del Santo son of Santo, will work with series creator and executive producer Carlo Olivares Paganoni to develop this yet-to-be-titled adventure/fantasy series set in Mexico City. El Hijo del Santo is heir to the legendary silver mask, once held by his father, the flesh and blood icon - Santo, El Enmascarado de Plata.
A highly idolized figure in Mexico, Santo is a cultural icon who has not only conquered the world of lucha libre Mexican wrestling, but has also been immortalized in film and television. Santo passed his legacy onto his son 25 years ago, who has since successfully defended his fathers title and propelled the distinguished reputation to a worldwide level. Today, El Hijo del Santo is recognized as the silver masked wrestler, Santo. Now over 65 years in the making, Santos legacy has reached iconic status and is a true symbol of heroism.

In the new series, Santo is the world’s most respected and most popular Mexican luchador (wrestler) who proudly upholds the honor that was passed down by his father. Along with inheriting the silver mask, the ultimate sign of purity and goodness, a brave and young Santo must also learn how to manage a vast array of mystical powers with the guidance of Coatl, an ancient feathered serpent. Santo uses his new powers to defend justice inside and outside the wrestling ring and faces a slew of enemies ranging from everyday criminals to genetically enhanced mystical villains.
Created and executive-produced by Carlo Olivares Paganoni with Alex Soto (Ben 10) as supervising producer, 13 half-hour episodes are being produced at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, Calif.

“Taking a cue from the lucha libre Mexican wrestling masks that theyve worn since their 1994 inception, Los Straitjackets apply their brand of guitar-fueled, instrumental sturm und twang to their first Spanish language album, “Rock En Espanol, Vol. 1.” Available April 3 via Yep Roc Records, the 14-song set finds Los Straitjackets guitarists Danny Amis and Eddie Angel, bassist Pete Curry, and drummer Jason “Teen Beat” Smay sharing the spotlight with guest vocalists Little Willie G. of East L.A. legends Thee Midniters, Fly-Rite Boys frontman Big Sandy, and — the albums producer — Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos.
Most of the songs heard on “Rock En Espanol” were originally huge U.S. Top 40 hits for riff-rockers The Kinks, the McCoys, The Troggs, R&B luminaries Jackie Wilson, Arthur Alexander, Brenton Wood, and Barbara Lynn, country stalwart Marty Robbins and 50s jive-bombers the Coasters and Larry Williams. However, these tunes were also recorded in Spanish language versions by such mid-60s Mexican rock n roll bands as Los Yaki, Los Freddys, Los Apson, Los Rockin Devils, Los Teen Tops, Los Locos Del Ritmo, and Rebeldes De Rock. All of the latter, as well as Los Apson frontman Polo, Hermanos Carrion, and the sublimely named Juan El Matematico John The Mathematician, made dozens of records in their native Mexico. And it is from these flipped discs — mostly consisting of U.S. Top 40 hits sung in Spanish — that Los Straitjackets drew their primary inspiration for “Rock En Espanol.”
Los Straitjackets began life when Danny Amis, formerly of pioneering modern instrumental-rock combo the Raybeats, joined forces with Eddie Angel after witnessing the latter perform a Link Wray number while backing Webb Wilder. Since debuting with “The Utterly Fantastic & Totally Unbelievable Sounds of Los Straitjackets” in 1995, the masked marvels have unleashed an additional eight long-players on an unsuspecting world, including a live album, a Grammy-nominated/Living Blues award-winning collaboration with bluesman Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater, a Christmas album, and a previous collection with guest vocalists called “Sing Along With Los Straitjackets.”
Los Straitjackets music has also graced the soundtracks of various TV shows — notably “Malcolm In The Middle” and “Melrose Place” — and at least 10 feature films, including “Meet The Parents,” “Harriet The Spy,” “Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room,” “Two Days In The Valley,” and “Psycho Beach Party” wherein they appeared as themselves.
Long before “Nacho Libre” was a gleam in Jack Blacks eye, Los Straitjackets live shows were legendary for their left-right combination of offhand chops, unashamed choreography, and serious humor. Look for them to perform selections from “Rock En Espanol” at the South By Southwest festival — and in a town near you — when they begin their Spring 2007 tour.”
