OTHER STORIES IN THIS ISSUE:
David Archuleta on Top
David Archuleta, the first Hispanic contestant to make it as a finalist on American Idol, talks to PEOPLE en Espanol about his newfound fame, how he almost did not make it, and his plans for the future. “I’ve always imagined myself on stage,” says Archuleta, who at 17-years-old, placed second, after David Cook, on the hit reality show series.
Even after millions of votes and his “Archie” fan club, he still remains humble. “I thought nobody liked to hear me sing,” says Archuleta. However, his accomplishments are nothing short of a miracle. About a year and a half ago, Archuleta received medical treatment for paralysis in his vocal cords. “The doctor said there is somebody up there who wants him to sing because, medically speaking, he should not be able to,” says Archuleta’s father.
He’s now gearing up for the American Idols Live! Tour 2008 and will also start recording his first album as a solo artist. “I feel a connection when I hear other people singing. If I can accomplish that, it would make me feel so good,” says Archuleta. (Page 143)

University of Vermont Environmentalists Court Minority Students

David Lucero grew up in Jamaica, Queens, and he was trying to connect with a group of students in a large classroom overflowing with plants and fish tanks at the High School for Environmental Studies on Manhattan’s West Side.
Mr. Lucero, 22, will soon begin a doctoral program in molecular biology and genetics at the University of Vermont. When he spent a day at the high school recently, his prime goal was to encourage other Latino students, as well as black and Asian-American students, to pursue environmental studies in college and as a career.
Three other Vermont seniors also made the trip, on a mission to recruit minority students from New York City to the state university in Burlington, overlooking Lake Champlain. It is not easy to sell 16- and 17-year-olds on the virtues of camping, hiking, ice skating and living in a small city near the Canadian border when they are more familiar with urban culture, like where to transfer from the E train to the A.”*

TeleFutura, one of the largest Spanish-language networks in the U.S. and the ideal entertainment alternative for Hispanics across the nation, announced today the winner of its popular singing competition, “Objetivo Fama” (Objective: Fame). Cristina Eustace of Dallas, TX was declared the show’s fifth season winner during a star-studded grand finale show broadcast LIVE from the Centro de Bellas Artes in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
Hosted by “Escándalo TV’s” (Showbiz TV) inimitable Charytín Goyco, the “Objetivo Fama” grand finale gala featured performances by reggeatón superstar duo, Wisin y Yandel, as well as Mexican singer and actress, Lucero. In addition, two of the shows’ previous winners Marlon, and Juan, as well as two of the top finalists from other seasons, Iván López and Erica Gonzaba, offered spectacular joint performances with this season’s finalists. Also present during the gala were this season’s 20 participants as well as the renowned panel of judges which included Roberto Sueiro, Fernando Allende, and Mexican singer, Jimena.
The program also included a stellar red-carpet pre-show hosted by “Escándalo TV’s” Marisa del Portillo and Lilia Luciano, who were joined by regional Mexican music star, Rogelio Martínez and popular salsa group, NG2.
Vying for the winning title were four young artists from all corners of the U.S.; Yaindhi Alvarez from New York, NY; Samuel Colón from Moca, PR; Jonathan Rios from Lares, PR; and Christina Eustace from Dallas, TX. After delivering a compelling performance of El Amor que Soñé and Como Yo, Nadie Te Ha Amado, (duo with last season winner, Juan), Cristina Eustace was announced as the winner chosen by viewers.
“Original productions like ‘Objetivo Fama’ exemplify the kind of thrilling and varied programming we consistently offer our audience,” said Bert Medina, senior vice president and operating manager, TeleFutura. “This year’s competition was one of the toughest by far and we sincerely congratulate Cristina for her outstanding dedication and extraordinary winning performance.”
Cristina Eustace will receive a series of valuable prizes, including a recording contract with Universal Music Latin Entertainment (formerly Univision Music Group); a GT edition of Pontiac’s all-new 2009 Vibe; $10,000 cash from McDonald’s; and $10,000 in merchandise from Sears. “Objetivo Fama” relies on the solid support of great sponsors including Pontiac, McDonald’s Corporation, and Sears, Roebuck and Co. Additional sponsors include Garnier Fructis, Maybelline New York, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company and Walgreens.
“Objetivo Fama” has truly brought fame to its participants, starting with the Puerto Rican singer, Janina, whose debut CD Todo de Mí featured two singles that climbed to the Top 20 in Puerto Rico and throughout Latin America. Second season winner, Anaís, who is Dominican by birth and a New Yorker at heart, made her professional debut with the album titled Así Soy Yo, taking her song Lo que son las Cosas to the #1 spot in the Top 20 for seven consecutive weeks. She has received prestigious nominations for major music awards such as the “Premio Lo Nuestro a la Música Latina” and the “Latin GRAMMY®s”. Marlon, the winner from the show’s third season and a Cuban artist who carries tropical music in his soul and his country’s liveliness in his heart, recently launched his first CD, Mi Sueño and earned a “Premio Lo Nuestro a la Música Latina” nomination. Last year’s winner, Juan Vélez, also from Puerto Rico, has already recorded his first album, Con Mi Soledad, which was recently nominated for several music awards.

Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts (MCCLA) presents “The Question is Known: (W)here is Latin American/Latino Art?” in the MCCLA gallery, 2868 Mission St, San Francisco, April 18-May 24, 2008. Opening reception Friday, April 18, 7-10pm ($5). “The Question is Known” includes works by 30 Latino/Latin American artists as well as non-Latinos. Curator Anthony Torres writes that the exhibition “is concerned with making what should be a simple and obvious statement — that Latino artists and art practices are diverse.” A related symposium takes place Saturday, April 19, 10am-3:30pm at San Francisco Art Institute (800 Chestnut St., San Francisco).
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 7, 2008 — Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts (MCCLA) presents “The Question is Known: (W)here is Latin American/Latino Art?” The exhibition, curated by Anthony Torres, features thirty artists whose works reflect a vast range of aesthetic and conceptual frameworks and material approaches. “The Question is Known: (W)here is Latin American/Latino Art?” is on view at Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts, 2868 Mission Street (near 24th), San Francisco, April 18-May 24, 2008. The gallery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (daily admission $2). For more information, call (415) 821-1155, or visit www.MissionCulturalCenter.org.
The exhibition premieres with an opening reception on Friday, April 18, 7-10 p.m. ($5). To augment the exhibition, MCCLA has teamed with the Graduate Program of San Francisco Art Institute to present a free symposium on Saturday, April 19, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at SFAI (800 Chestnut St., San Francisco, www.sfai.edu/questionisknown), exploring various aspects of current approaches to Latin American/Latino art practice.
“The Question is Known” (the title was inspired by lyrics from a Jimi Hendrix song) includes works from private and public collections by artists from the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean, and includes Latino/Latin American artists as well as non-Latinos for whom Latino/Caribbean art and culture have been sources of inspiration in their work. In an accompanying brochure, curator Anthony Torres writes that “The Question is Known” “is concerned with making what should be a simple and obvious statement — that Latino artists and art practices are diverse.”
On view are works by Vicente Antonorsi, Adrián Arias, José Bedia, Claudia Bernardi, Luis Camnitzer, Victor Cartagena, Rolando Castellón, Enrique Chagoya, Ana de la Cueva, Lewis deSoto, Miguel Farias, Juan Fuentes, Rupert Garcia, Manuel A. Gomez, Matt Gonzalez, Luis Gutierrez, Sylvia Ji, Rob Keller, Geraldine Lozano, Manuel Lucero, James Luna, Manuel Neri, Bernardo Roman Palau, Liliana Porter, Gustavo Ramos Rivera, Clare Rojas, Claudio Roncoli, Raymond Saunders, Robin Savinar, and Nahum Zenil.
MCCLA Executive Director Jennie E. Rodríguez says, “For thirty years, Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts has presented exhibitions and programs that highlight the richness and diversity of Latino visual arts and cultural expression, and this exhibition is a wonderful opportunity for us to expand on this tradition.”
MCCLA Gallery Coordinator Patricia Rodríguez says, “In my seven years at MCCLA, I have coordinated and curated exhibitions that primarily focus on Latino artists from the Bay Area and throughout California, and have seen audience participation grow. This is a historic exhibition in the 30-year history of MCCLA, with the participation of national and international artists and important galleries and museums, and we hope it will add further audience support for our gallery, classes and programs.”
Through the works selected for “The Question is Known,” explains Torres, the exhibition “aims to interrogate the significance of ‘Latin American/Latino Art’ by problematizing, reformulating, and re-presenting ‘Latin American/Latino Art’ as an intellectual fabrication that is often ‘essentialized’ as a unitary subject or category.”
The exhibition explores Latin American/Latino art as “a historically contingent ideological construct that is not ‘natural’ or given,” Torres continues, “but rather a hybrid of cultural creations that are fluid and mobile, established by contact, conflict, experience, sympathetic issue identification, and fantasy constructions, often constituted as living sources of inspiration, articulated through iconography, formal vocabularies, and personal associations.” The exhibition is thus “concerned with positing ‘Latino art’ as an ambiguous area of inquiry that raises issues, poses questions, and interrogates curatorial perspectives and institutional politics.”"*

“Maria Mercedes,” “Corazon Salvaje,” “Marimar” — all of these classic telenovelas were widely requested on DVD by the fans, and high on that list is Lucero’s masterpiece LAZOS DE AMOR. Xenon Pictures, along with Lionsgate Entertainment, announced today that the sensational telenovela, winner of the 1996 TVyNovelas Award for Novela of the Year, will finally be released April 1st, 2008 to audiences nationwide.
LAZOS DE AMOR originally aired in 1995 to 5 million nightly viewers, capturing a consistent 24 rating on the US Nielsen Rating scale and outperforming many English-language programs. The success was due in part to its captivating star, Lucero, who earned the coveted TVyNovelas Award for Best Actress for her astounding performance as identical triplets with disparate personalities. Rounding out the talented cast are Luis Jose Santander (”Te Sigo Amando”), 3-time Silver Ariel winner Marga Lopez (”El Manantial”), Luis Bayardo (”Amarte es Mi Pecado”), Silver Ariel and MTV Movie Award winner Demian Bichir (Sin Noticias de Dios), Maty Huitron (”Amor Real”), Felicia Mercado (”Entre el Amor y el Odio”), and a young Angelica Vale, prior to starring role as “La Fea mas Bella”.
The single-disc DVD includes more than 304 minutes of content and is in Spanish with English subtitles. LAZOS DE AMOR will be available at all major retail and online stores, with a suggested retail price of $19.98. (High resolution cover attached).
SYNOPSIS:
Maria Paula, Maria Fernanda and Maria Guadalupe are identical triplets, similar in appearance but with vastly different personalities. When the girls were very young, their parents were killed in a terrible auto accident — caused by Maria Paula, who covered her father’s eyes while he was driving — that left Maria Fernanda blind and Maria Guadalupe with amnesia. Maria Guadalupe was rescued by a woman who raised her as her own daughter, while the others were raised by their grandmother Dona Mercedes, who never lost hope of finding her lost granddaughter. Maria Fernanda grows up to be a sweet and generous girl; Maria Paula becomes willful, capricious and egotistical, always needing to be the center of attention.
The story climaxes with the inevitable encounter of the three sisters, which will have serious consequences in their lives and in the lives of those close to them.

The Univision Television Network’s telecast of the 8th Annual Latin GRAMMY® Awards last night reached 12.6 million viewers and was the biggest broadcast ever in the history of the award show among the highly coveted Adult 18-34 demographic. According to Nielsen Media Research’s Fast NTI Ratings, the broadcast attracted 2.3 million Adults 18-34 and 2.7 million Persons 12-34, a +15% and +8% increase versus last year, respectively. Overall, Univision’s telecast attracted 6.2 million average Total Viewers.
Among Adults 18-34, the Univision telecast beat such other popular programs as ABC’s “Ugly Betty” (2,171,000); NBC’s “ER” (2,078,000); CBS’s “Survivor China” (1,889,000); Fox’s “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” (1,543,000) and “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” (1,309,000); and CW’s “Smallville” (1,253,000) and “Supernatural” (747,000).
Univision’s telecast of the award show was also an unqualified success among other important demos. This year’s show garnered the second highest audience ever among Adults 18-49 (3.8 million) and Teens 12-17 (390,000), versus previous Latin GRAMMY® broadcasts.
The broadcast was also the #1 program in its time period in a number of major markets among key demos, regardless of language. In Los Angeles, the program was #1 for the time period among Persons 2+ and in the key demos of Adults 18-34, 18-49, and Teens 12-17, beating all other stations in the market. The program was #1 among Adults 18-34 in New York, Houston, and Dallas. It was #1 among Adults 18-49 in Houston and Dallas, and it was #1 in households in Miami.
Held for the very first time in Las Vegas, the excitement of this year’s program started even before the show as thousands of screaming, enthusiastic Latin music fans lined the Green Carpet arrival area at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. The completely sold-out, capacity crowd erupted with cheers and danced in the aisles starting with the show’s electrifying opening act of superstar Ricky Martin (winner for Best Male Pop Vocal Album and Best Long Form Music Video) and one of Vegas’ most popular acts, Blue Man Group.
The energized audience was then treated to an incredible line-up of eye-popping Las Vegas style musical numbers spanning the rich spectrum of Latin music featuring Juan Luis Guerra (The evening’s leading winner for Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, Best Merengue Album, and Best Tropical Song), Calle 13 (winners for Best Urban Music Album and Best Urban Song), Pepe Aguilar (Best Ranchero Album), La 5a Estación (Best Pop Album By A Duo Or Group With Vocal), and Laura Pausini (Best Female Pop Vocal Album), and Jesse & Joy (Best New Artist), among others.
The show featured an explosive performance by the Puerto Rican reggaeton duo Calle 13 and Cuban hip-hop group Orishas, featuring the cast from the Las Vegas production of “STOMP OUT LOUD,” dancers from “HavanaNightShow,” and Arauco Indians from Colombia in native dress. Fellow reggaeton superstar Daddy Yankee performed “Ella Me Levanto” surrounded by a bevy of beauties in towering feathered headdresses from the Folies Bergere.
Another musical highlight featured Best Female Pop Vocal Album winner Laura Pausini who was joined onstage by fellow Italian and superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli. In one of the evening’s most colorful productions, Puerto Rican reggeatonera Ivy Queen performed her hit “Que Lloren” dressed as a geisha and surrounded by dancers in elaborate Japanese masks and costumes. In perhaps the most emotionally charged performance of the evening, Spanish singer Shaila Dúrcal moved the audience as she sang “Amor Eterno,” a tribute to her deceased mother, Rocío Dúrcal. One of the most interesting combinations of the show was the pairing of duranguense group Alacranes Musical and Mexican alternative band Kinky. Proving that talent runs in the family, international recording sensation Miguel Bosé performed an exciting duo with his niece Bimba. Closing the show was the night’s biggest winner Juan Luis Guerra who was accompanied on timbales by legendary percussionist Sheila E. in a rousing performance of his hit “La Travesía.”
Contributing to the program’s ratings success was no doubt Univision’s unique cross-promotional efforts by its sister networks TeleFutura and Galavisión, its Univision Radio Group, and its popular website Univision.com. The star-studded extravaganza was also broadcast offering English-language closed-captions, allowing all lovers of Latin music to enjoy this annual celebration of musical artistry.
Univision.com (keyword: Latin Grammy) was the official Spanish-language website of this year’s Latin GRAMMY® Awards. Exclusive online coverage features pre and post-show highlights that include behind-the-scenes videos, celebrity commentary, and a detailed summary of the night’s winners. Rounding out coverage, Univision Móvil also delivers pre and post-show exclusives with mobile video clips from the Green Carpet, artist interviews and behind-the-scenes action.
The 8th Annual Latin GRAMMY® Awards, co-hosted by internationally acclaimed actress/singer Lucero and Mexican comedian Eugenio Derbez, was broadcast live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on the Univision Network on Thursday, November 8th, 2007, from 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. ET/PT (7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Central).”*
