Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s leading music company, today announced that it has completed its acquisition of Univision Music Group following the recent clearance of the deal in the U.S. by the Federal Trade Commission. The acquisition results in UMG becoming the largest Latin music company in North America.
The combined company, which will operate under the Universal Music Latin Entertainment banner, will include Universal Music Latino, Machete, the newly acquired labels from the Univision purchase — Fonovisa and Disa, Universal Music Mexico & Central America, Latin publishing in the US and Mexico, including the newly acquired Edimonsa, Disa and the Fonovisa catalogs, and GTS Global Talent Services, a management service division. As part of this acquisition, the Univision name will be phased out. Universal Music Latin Entertainment will be a division of Universal Music Latin America, and will be led by Jesus Lopez (currently Chairman & CEO of Latin America and Iberian Peninsula). Mr. Lopez will continue to be based in Miami, Florida and report to Zach Horowitz (President & COO, Universal Music Group) for Universal Music Latin Entertainment.
“Jesus has presided over a period of remarkable growth for Universal Music Latin America,” stated Mr. Horowitz. “His vision and passion for Latin music, entrepreneurial instincts and ability to think ‘out of the box,’ combined with that rare talent of being able to balance both creative and business concerns, make him the ideal person to lead the newly merged company.”
“I am truly grateful to Zach for this exciting opportunity,” commented Mr. Lopez. “It is a privilege to continue working so closely with him and the entire Latin music team as we build this new company, complete with such a rich history and one of the most dynamic groups of artists and executives in the business.”
In addition, it was also announced today that Jose Behar, President of Univision Music Group, has departed the company.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to recognize all of the contributions that Jose has made to Univision over the years,” added Mr. Lopez. “We certainly wish him the very best in all of his future endeavors.”
Universal Music Latin Entertainment possesses a roster of chart-topping artists as well as a vast catalog that comprises some of the most important Latin recordings in history. “Univision Communications Inc. NYSE:UVN – Spectacle and surprises abounded Thursday night on the 19th edition of “Premio Lo Nuestro a La MÚsica Latina,” America’s most popular and most-watched Latin music awards show, broadcast live on the Univision Television Network.
The biggest winners of the night with three awards each were Norteño super group Intocable and popular Mexican rock group Maná, followed by international pop sensation RBD, Puerto Rican singer Olga Tañón, Dominican bachata artists Monchy y Alexandra and Aventura, Regional Mexican artist Joan Sebastián, and Puerto Rican Reggaeton artists Wisin y Yandel who each took home two awards. Intocable received three awards in the Regional Mexican category including Best Group or Duo, Song of the Year for “Alguien te Va a Hacer Llorar” and Best Norteño Artist. Maná swept the Rock category winning top honors in all three awards for Album of the Year Amar es Combatir, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year Labios Compartidos. Receiving one of the biggest ovations of approval from the audience was popular salsa star Marc Anthony as he was awarded Male Artist of the Year in the Tropical Music category.
The star studded show kicked off with a dazzling, fireworks-filled musical number featuring Mexican pop/rock diva Gloria Trevi singing “Todos Me Miran” that ended with her ascending skyward in an explosive, flaming finale. Later, in another visually stunning number, Colombian singer Fonseca sang his hit “Te Mando Flores” (I Send You Flowers) to a virtual field of fans waving over 10,000 real flowers specially flown in from his native country.
In what would be the first of many surprises of the night, Ranchero superstar Pepe Aguilar sang the classic hit “Todo Se Derrumbo” made famous by Mexican pop legend Emmanuel, who appeared in person onstage in a previously unannounced performance to thunderous applause from a clearly surprised audience.
One of the night’s more emotional moments was a video tribute to the career of Dominican singer/songwriter Juan Luis Guerra. Guerra then performed a medley of his greatest hits, after which he was presented the coveted “Premio a la Excelencia” award by two members of the Mexican super group Maná.
Another show highlight was Domincan bachata group Aventura performing for the first time ever with Mexican R&B singer Frankie J. Later, in the final surprise of the evening, the crowd was treated to a dramatic entrance by Reggaetón superstar Don Omar joining popular salsa artist Victor Manuelle in a duet combining both their respective musical genres.
The evening ended with the most hotly contested category of all, the highly anticipated Video of the Year, presented by motion picture star and best-selling recording artist Jennifer Lopez. This award, which crosses all musical genres and whose nominees include some of the biggest names in all of Latin music, ultimately went to Don Omar for “Angelito.”
