The band’s cover of Ritchie Valens’ 1958 hit “La Bamba,” which never leaves radio rotation, has kept Los Lobos a household name. But the screen debut of Los Lonely Boys’ music was in a movie about the band — and a true story.”*

AMERICAN MASTERS

AMERICAN MASTERS, which pioneered the television biography genre, continues to offer insightful profiles of important figures in America’s artistic and cultural life.

“Orozco: Man on Fire” Wednesday, September 19, 2007, 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET This is the vibrant story of an artist whose dramatic life, iconoclastic personality and dynamic painting changed the way we see art and politics. Jose Clemente Orozco’s travels back and forth across the U.S.- Mexico border are emblematic of the experiences of millions of Mexican migrants and immigrants who come seeking a better life in America. His personal convictions and tenacity in the face of daunting obstacles make him a compelling figure with universal appeal. Shot on location in Mexico and the United States, the documentary weaves a rich tapestry of images and sound, evoking Orozco’s artistic style while opening a window onto the artist’s inner life, passions and convictions. www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters BROWN IS THE NEW GREEN: GEORGE LOPEZ AND THE AMERICAN DREAM Wednesday, September 12, 2007, 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET

Latinos, this nation’s largest and fastest-growing minority group, are big business. This smart, fast-paced program examines how efforts to profit from this group are shaping the contemporary Latino identity. The documentary’s focal point is George Lopez, an icon and advocate for Latinos’ move into the mainstream. As Cosby did for African Americans decades ago, Lopez normalizes the image of Latinos in a way that delights and entertains. BROWN IS THE NEW GREEN contrasts his endeavors with the efforts of marketers intent on spinning Latinos as a wholly distinct subculture. The show also features conversations with members of the much-coveted Latino youth market, whose tastes and interests are far more eclectic than the marketers would have us believe.

Latin Rockers deSoL’s upcoming release ” On My Way” is a spiritually charged musical journey that reverberates the confidence of a band that knows exactly where they are going and has just what it takes to get them there.

The new CD from Asbury Park’s deSoL which seamlessly blends material performed in both Spanish and English is set for an August 7th release.

(Asbury Park, NJ) - May 26, 2007 — deSoL, the Asbury Park, NJ-based band that mixes rock hooks with Latin rhythms is set to release On My Way, an album of all new material sung in English and Spanish is set to hit retail on August 7th through saZon Records/Two22 Music with distribution through ADA. The album’s first single “Sing It All Night” is scheduled to be serviced to Triple A radio next month.

Over the course of their six years together, deSoL has scored notable successes both on stage and on radio. Having toured extensively, deSoL has shared marquees with artists such as R.E.M., The Legendary Wailers, Los Lonely Boys, Blues Traveler, Particle and Widespread Panic, to name just a few. The band has become linked with the high profile festivals they’ve graced the stages of like Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits, and more.

With Rock, Pop and Latin influences abounding, deSoL’s music has managed to cross cultural borders and musical formats bypassing all boundaries. Their first single, “Karma” released in 2005 became a Top 5 hit on the AAA radio format once again proving that in art and music there are No Borders.

The Puerto Rican, Salvadorian, and Mexican influences which makeup deSoL’s mixed Latino bloodlines also serves as the for their musical heroes such as the Fania All Stars, Tito Puente, Buena Vista Social Club as well as Los Lobos, and Santana, among others.

Just before going into the studio to record On My Way, deSoL spent a month in the Middle East when they were contracted by the Department of Defense’s Armed Forces Entertainment program. They brought their infectious rhythms and soulful tunes to the most widely varied assortment of ethnic, racial, and cultural mixtures imaginable which would be the men and women of the US troops stationed in Bahrain, Qatar, Djibouti, and Kuwait. Vocalist/guitarist Albie Monterrosa defines the experience as the final stopover on the long journey leading up to the here and now.

Upon arrival home, deSoL’s members sensed a change in themselves and somehow knew they were not the same people who had left for the road some 30 months earlier. Retreat, reflection, and rejuvenation was what the band needed most. Ironically enough they found their solace at Lake House Music right back in Asbury Park where the journey had all started. Coming full circle, it was there with the help and inspiration of Jon Leidersdorff, they wrote and produced the new album which was to serve as the repository for all they’ve learned as a band and individuals. Albie Monterrosa, commenting on the band and album, remarked, “We’ve been together for more than six years now and the musical and spiritual bonds between the band members just keeps growing stronger all that time. I think this is by far the ballsiest this band has ever sounded. I’m not kidding – this record Rocks!”

Sol Dance arrives, bringing Latin American and Native American films to Park City

“Make room, Sundance: there’s a new film festival in town. Sol Dance Film Fiesta 2007’s groundbreaking three-day event will screen independent films by Latino and Native American filmmakers. Sol Dance will present from January 21-23 at the new Dolce’s Zermatt Resort and Spa in Midway, Utah, just 20 minutes down the road from the Sundance strip.

Sol Dance is dedicated to screening feature films, documentaries, and shorts by filmmakers whose lack of funds, resources, and other amenities have not stopped them from pursuing their passion for filmmaking. “This year is a celebration of Latin and Native American filmmakers,” said Elia Esparza, Sol Dance Co-Founder, a writer and former editor of Latin Heat and Estylo magazines. “The response has been so positive, and we are excited about unveiling our future plans.” Esparza, a contributor to the New York Post, says she envisions Sol Dance as an important home for Latino and Native Americans to compete, sell, and distribute.

Cristina Castro, CEO of Your Great Ideas, Inc., a Latino marketing and media agency and co-founder of Sol Dance, is spearheading the marketing and business development. “Every time I’ve been to Sundance there has been a missing link,” Castro said. “There seems to be a cultural disconnect. We need more films made by Latin Americans and Native Americans”.

Sol Dance will provide an added attraction to the 60,000 global participants already in the area. ”We will share the same mountain and dates as Sundance and Slamdance and add an extra window onto the world of film,” said Virginia Barreto-Applen, Nicaraguan born writer, director and executive producer at Tattoo Pictures. “Whether you are of Aztec, Maya, Inca, Cherokee, Sioux, or Cree descent, Sol Dance recognizes that we, the indigenous peoples of the Americas, are all one nation. And we have stories to tell.”

Venezuelan born film writer/director, Betty Kaplan will give the keynote address at the industry luncheon, “Latinos in Hollywood’s Cross Hairs,” on Tuesday, January 23rd. “I want to open a discourse on what Latinos want to see and how to reach us,” says Kaplan. In 1994, Kaplan directed her first major Hollywood studio film, “Of Love and Shadows,” starring Antonio Banderas and Jennifer Connelly. This thriller about Chile’s brutal Pinochet government, released by Miramax Films and Disney, received both critical acclaim and audience approval.

Salt Lake City businessman, Enrique Sosa, principal of Salt Lake City-based new-media company eFuerza, has embraced Sol Dance as its premier sponsor. There, Sosa intends to introduce his lifestyle company, SingleLatina.com.

Sosa was drawn to Sol Dance because the event reaches out to Utah’s diverse communities to share the beauty of cultures through cinematic arts. “This was most appealing to me,” he said, “and with a noted Latina director as keynote speaker, this was a natural launch pad for SingleLatina.com. We look forward to seeing Sol Dance bloom to its full potential and are proud to be a founding sponsor.”

Xenon Pictures will present a screening of two documentaries, “Los Lonely Boys” and the Reggaeton “Straight Out of Puerto Rico,” along with the feature film “7 Dias.” Carlos Gallardo will screen his “Curandero” (Miramax) on Tuesday, January 23rd.

Sol Dance opens on Sunday, January 21st with a full day of screenings, live music and broadcast coverage by sponsor Univision at the Zermatt’s Pavilion, and is open to the public. The next two days are packed with industry screenings and events. Utah’s Mariachi Zabala and Sacramento’s beloved musician, Aswut Rodriguez, a Latino-Native American, will perform with his band.

Sol Dance Film Fiesta ’07 sponsors include SingleLatina.com, Xenon Pictures, Mun2, Amigo Travel, Mindwalk Ventures, Tattoo Pictures, LLC, Weller/Grossman Productions, Dolce’s Zermatt Resort & Spa, Reyes Entertainment, Bustos Media, LLC, Center Stage, La Magica 106.1, Mariachi Zabala, Orgullo Café, Agel.com, and Nuskin.com.

Season 1 of REBELDE, the Telenovela That Launched the Latin-American Superband Rbd, Now on DVD

“Xenon Pictures and Televisa Home Entertainment are pleased to announce the special DVD release, on January 9th, 2007, of the first season of REBELDE to its millions of fans. This hit telenovela led to the crossover pop music sensation RBD and the worldwide phenomenon known as “RebeldeMania,” as well as numerous hit songs and millions of records sold around the globe.

The three-double-disc edition is filled with over 14 hours of content, including the first season of the hit telenovela, English subtitles, a special featurette with the shows “best kisses,” a photo gallery, biographies of the Rebelde gang along with key characters, and the full-length music videos of the songs “Solo quedate en Silencio,” which peaked at #2 on Billboards US Latin charts, “Salvame,” “Fuego,” and the original a capella and live versions of the anthem “Rebelde,” which stayed in the #1 spot for more than two months in Mexico and charted high in the US, Brazil, Colombia and many other countries.

“A phenomenon like this comes along maybe once in a generation,” says Xenon Pictures President and CEO Leigh Savidge, “and we are both proud and excited to be part of it.”

The biggest teen telenovela of all time in both Latin America and the US, REBELDE follows a group of students at the Elite Way School, where the children of Mexicos wealthy get a superior education and the kind of social contacts that assure a successful future. There is also a large number of becados, gifted lower-class students on scholarships, few of whom manage to graduate as they are persecuted by a secret society called La Logia, bent on conserving the “purity” of the upper classes. Starring Anahi, Dulce Maria, Maite Perroni, Alfonso “Poncho” Herrera, Christopher Uckermann and Christian Chavez, along with Ninel Conde and Juan Ferrara among others, REBELDE became a television sensation that has broken audience records, and has been so popular that artists such as Lenny Kravitz and Hillary Duff have appeared on the show to gain exposure in the Latin market; the “virtual” band Gorillaz even chose to debut their video “Dare” on “Rebelde” over any other show or network in Mexico.

REBELDE was one of Mexicos longest-running telenovelas with 440 episodes in 3 seasons, and continues to air in the US, Asia, and Latin America, with a feature film currently in development. Further demonstrating the popularity of the show, the term “rebelde” finished #8 on Googles 2006 Zeitgeist.

Six of the shows main characters are now part of the global musical phenomenon RBD, which have sold out venue after venue on their US tour, from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to New Yorks Madison Square Garden, selling over 20 million albums worldwide, with 2 million alone in the United States, and topping radio charts worldwide. Most recently, RBD has appeared at “Dick Clarks New Years Rockin Eve 2007″ and KIIS FMs popular Jingle Ball.

The January 9th release of REBELDE will be followed by the February theatrical release of the horror flick SNOOP DOGGS HOOD OF HORROR, starring Snoop Dogg, Brande Roderick, Anson Mount, Diamond Dallas Page, Jason Alexander, Daniella Alonso and Danny Trejo, among a star-studded cast. Slated for February 6th is the DVD release of LOS LONELY BOYS: COTTONFIELDS AND CROSSROADS, the acclaimed documentary directed by award-winner Henry Galan, and starring Grammy-Award winning “Texican” rock band Los Lonely Boys.”

Los Lonely Boys bring ‘Texican’ to Tampa - Florida

“The Garza brothers spent years performing around West Texas as the backing band for their father Enrique in crowded cantinas and roadhouses. Eventually, the siblings formed their own power trio and after choosing the name Los Lonely Boys took their distinct brand of “Texican” guitar rock from the Lone Star State to the world. In doing so, they joined a very elite club of Chicano “crossover” stars.

Los Lonely Boys have been in the limelight ever since their 2004 self-titled debut album generated the breezy hit single “Heaven.” The LP has sold more than two million copies and earned the trio a Grammy for best Pop Vocal Duo/Group. The 2005 release of “Live at the Fillmore” documented the band’s power in concert, most notably the chops of lead guitarist/singer Henry Garza, whose style recalls fellow Texan Stevie Ray Vaughan”

“Los Lonely Boys’ documentary, which opens Friday(9/8) at the Santikos Theaters, is an 89-minute tour of rich, Texas music history.

Of course, the central drama is LLB’s struggle. It traces the young brothers (Ringo, JoJo and Henry) from backing musicians in their father Enrique Garza’s conjunto group to their slow rise as a finely-tuned blues-rock trio we know today. There is drama and intrigue as we find out just how tough the early years were in West Texas.”

The Zen of Revolution: Michael Ramos’ Charanga Cakewalk

“Michael Ramos bears not a single distinguishing characteristic of the revolutionary. He’s a quiet, unassuming, trim, and well-dressed man who has spent almost his entire career in subordinate roles in a variety of groups. He’s been a member of the Bodeans and the Rembrandts and played accordion and keyboards for Patty Griffin, John Mellencamp, Paul Simon, and, currently, Los Lonely Boys.

Yet on the long bus journeys and overnight hotel stays that take up far too great a percentage of a road musician’s life, Ramos uses Pro Tools to transform all the music he’s played and has grown up with into a unique synthesis that blows apart preconceptions. Ramos has released two albums as Charanga Cakewalk, which is what he calls the result. It’s a conceptual group, like Steely Dan, consisting of Ramos and whatever friends, acquaintances, and heroes he manages to corral.”

Don’t mess with these Texans - Los Lonely Boys

“IT hasn’t been at all lonely at the top for Los Lonely Boys, the hit trio of Mexican American brothers with the rootsy music style they call Texican. In fact, the boys discovered that stardom meant no shortage of people telling them how to follow up on their self-titled 2003 debut album, a surprise, multiplatinum smash with the Grammy-winning hit single “Heaven.”

Their label suggested they should cover radio-friendly songs by other writers. Their manager, a former Texas musician himself, was fixated on churning out the next hit single. And some well-meaning marketers even told them to tone down the spirituality that was part of their upbringing in the big sky country of West Texas and that found its way naturally into songs like “Heaven,” written as a prayer in a desperate, down-and-out moment in Memphis.”

Lonely Boys: arrest was misunderstanding

“The arrest of the bassist for Los Lonely Boys on allegations he assaulted his fiancée was all a misunderstanding, the band’s publicist said Sunday.

Police arrested Joey “JoJo” Sacarais Garza, 26, at an Austin hotel Saturday on charges of assault causing bodily injury and possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana, authorities said. Garza was released on bond from Travis County Jail hours later. “

Los Lonely Boys hold fast to Mexican roots

“Everyone has heard about Santana, and Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba,” but sometimes I like to point out that one of rock’s early hits, “Let’s Dance,” was written and first recorded by Chris Montez, a Mexican-American from Southern California. But when I asked Los Lonely Boys’ white-hot guitarist Henry Garza Jr. if he knew that “Let’s Dance” was covered by the Ramones on their first album, he was unimpressed. “The Ramones?” he said, “Sunny and the Sunliners recorded it, too, man!”

Garza’s reference to the San Antonio native and Texas rock legend Sunny Ozuna showed me how much I had to learn about the history of Chicano rock. Still, Los Lonely Boys are not only the living memory of Spanglish-speaking bands, they also embody the future of the Texican sound. “

Los Boys are back. Los Lonely Boys

“Ringo Garza has a weird sense of humor. The Los Lonely Boys drummer was doing a photo shoot with brothers Henry Garza and JoJo Garza in a parking lot in Houston, where the trio was headlining an all-day Fourth of July concert, when he spotted a line of police officers leaning against a wall. “Hey, let’s get a picture of me getting handcuffed,” Ringo said to the photographers, who got in position for one heckuva photo op. He had decided to goof on his high-profile arrest in January 2005, which threw the band into a negative national light for a few months until the charges of marijuana possession were dropped and the sexual assault accusations did not lead to charges. “Could we get a picture of you guys putting the cuffs on me?” Ringo asked. The cops did not share his amusement and refused, though they did pose for photos.”
