Eco-Cycle outreach targets Longmont Latinos

Tags: , ,

“With the help of the city of Longmont, Eco-Cycle is launching an outreach program designed to encourage more recycling in the city’s Latino community.

The large influx of Latinos to the Longmont area over the past 20 years is a major driving force behind the new program, said Dan Benavidez, the compliance and logistics manager of Boulder Imports and a former City Council member.

“The demographics in this region — and all over the country — have changed radically,” he said, noting in particular the large number of Latinos of Mexican origin who live in Longmont.”*

Talking Business: El Tigre balloons into ’supermercado’ - Longmont, Colorado

Tags: ,

“The Lower Columbia’s largest Latino grocery store, El Tigre, offers 11 different kinds of chiles — hot peppers — including the hottest of all, the piquin.

Having specialities like that is one reason the four-year old grocery is expanding at its location at 463 Oregon Way in Longview, where it moved just a year ago.

Owner Neri Aguilar credits the store’s success to strong customer service, the area’s fast-growing Latino community, and the store’s evolution into a one-stop shop for local Latinos — a “supermercado” that sells $17 pinatas and $130 watches, specialty creams from Central America, $49 cowboy boots for tots and spooky religious knickknacks such as a statue of Santa Muerte - the Grim Reaper. “*

AB (a grocery store) part of growing trend reaching Hispanic food-buyers - Longmont, Colorado

“People in Mexico don’t buy “tuna” cactus plants, their edible pads or delicious kiwi-like fruit at the market. They grow them in their back yards instead.

But since the Mexicans who’ve moved to Longmont no longer have the climate ”” nor, oftentimes, the yards ”” to grow the prickly but popular pears, the new AB Super Market in Longmont sells them, four for $1.”

“Rafael Vivas sneaked into the United States six years ago but says he’s not ashamed of it, having worked hard and stayed out of trouble since he’s been here.

On Aug. 30, the Longmont resident said, he took a $10-an-hour job with Bowen Landscaping, a Wyoming-based outfit that works primarily out of sites on 21st and 17th avenues in Longmont.

According to Vivas, Bowen management never asked him to fill out paperwork or provide any identification until he had already worked six days and come to collect his first paycheck.”

Did You Know? Labor department inspector general Drew Durham said if a company finds out after a few weeks that an employee is undocumented, the company should file a report of the hours and wages worked. The Internal Revenue Service provides employers a number to use in tax filings instead of the worker’s false Social Security number.

Would-be governors talk immigration in Colorado

“Democrat Bill Ritter says his Republican opponent, Rep. Bob Beauprez, failed to do anything as a congressman to stop illegal immigration and isn’t offering any solutions in his bid for governor.

Beauprez, meanwhile, said Ritter is offering a path to citizenship for the estimated 250,000 illegal immigrants in Colorado if they can pay their back taxes ”” in essence offering “sanctuary.”

Immigration ”” the issue that has dominated virtually everything in Colorado for months ”” is expected to become a major focus for both parties when it comes time to get voters to polls in November.”

Immigration fever puts parties in the hot seat. Colorado

“Rachel Olivarez-Sellers doesn’t bring up immigration anymore as she crisscrosses Colorado trying to reach out to new Hispanic voters. It’s just too complicated.

It’s not that she doesn’t have strong views. After taking over the state Democratic Party’s Latino Initiative last year, Olivarez-Sellers helped push the party to take a formal position against a proposed ballot measure that would have denied illegal immigrants non-emergency public services.

But in some of Colorado’s 64 far-flung counties, she finds local Democrats split on the issue. So are the Hispanic voters she encounters.”

A Program for Immigrants Stirs Worries on Both Sides. Longmont, Colorado

“It might be tempting to think that tackling the tangled issue of immigration would be easier here in Boulder County, which has a reputation, sometimes said with a sneer in other corners of Colorado, of tolerating diverse and divergent views on just about everything.

Sometimes the public discourse even on mundane matters is so good, local officials brag, that it becomes almost a tourist attraction, drawing outsiders who just want to stand up and be heard. Owners of the Java Stop, a coffee bar on Main Street, say they have resisted adding wireless Internet access for fear it could dampen the quality of conversation….”
