NCLR, LCCR, ADL, AAJC, National Urban League and MALDEF to Hold News Briefing on the Rise in Hate During and Since the Election

“—Calling it a “wake up call for America,” six national civil rights organizations will hold a joint news conference on Monday, November 24 to denounce the recent wave of brutal hate crimes against communities of color. Just last week, Marcelo Lucero, a Suffolk County, Long Island man of Ecuadoran descent, was beaten to death by a group of teenagers simply for being Hispanic.

“Thankfully, hate did not win this election, but it has not gone away either,” said Janet Murguía, President and CEO of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR). “Suffolk County mirrors the experience of many communities in America where hate, fostered on a national scale, has found a new home.”

Representatives from NCLR, the Asian American Justice Center, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the National Urban League, the Anti-Defamation League and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) will address the recent FBI report on the rise in hate crimes nationally, as well as a number of other incidents of hate during and since the election.”

“Tiger Woods recently paid $65 million (£32m) for a beachfront home here. Christie Brinkley, whose recent divorce has been the talk of Long Island, is a regular visitor. But as a result of a locally enforced purge of the undocumented immigrants who provide much of the menial workforce, barmen are disappearing from beach bars, waiters from the lobster-and-champagne benefit parties and cleaners from the holiday mansions. Long Island is divided as never before between the haves and the have-nots.”*

Fears increase at crossing of the border

““Troops are trained to kill, not to deal with civilians,” said Eleazar Serrano Angeles, the mayor of Mixquiahuala, where many workers have left for jobs on Long Island. “This is no way to repay the valuable services that Mexicans perform in the United States.”

Many Mexico experts also doubt a beefed-up border will stem illegal migration because even the lowest-paying jobs in the United States pay 10 times an average Mexican salary.

“It will only increase the deaths,” said Arturo Solis, director of Mexico’s Center for Frontier Studies and Human Rights.”*

No Frills but a Fiesta in Every Kitchen - Long Island Latin Cusine

“SEATED at the counter at Taqueria Mexico here, you can see a woman making tortillas through the open kitchen door. With quick, confident movements, she volleys the dough between her palms before smacking it onto the press. It’s a spirited rhythm: Slap, slap, slap, bam!

Ardent authenticity distinguishes this little East End place (just five tables and three red stools at a tiny counter) in the local landscape of Latin cuisine. But Taqueria Mexico is not alone: Latin American restaurateurs are turning out traditional cuisine in no-frills spots across Long Island.”*

Many people were misinterpreting Spanish-language news reports about the bill, believing it signaled a start to a round of raids, said Sister Margaret Smyth, head of the Catholic Church’s Hispanic Apostolate on the North Fork.”*
