Linda Chavez: Silence in wake of Arizona’s immigration law

“Arizona has been ground zero in the fight against illegal immigration – but a funny thing happened earlier this month when a new anti-illegal-immigrant state law went into effect. Nothing.

The law, one of the toughest in the nation, requires jurisdictions to investigate complaints by ordinary citizens against local businesses that may be employing illegal immigrants. But apparently most Arizonans have better things to worry about.”*

The Sound of Silence::By Linda Chavez

“A new study out by the conservative think tank Americas Majority Foundation (www.amermaj.com) suggests a possible explanation why more Arizonans aren’t rushing to run off illegal workers. It turns out Arizonans may be better off — not worse — because of the presence of so many immigrants in the population.

This sounds counterintuitive, at least if you believe current political rhetoric and tendentious research by anti-immigrant groups like the Center for Immigration Studies, NumbersUSA, and the Federation for American Immigration Reform. But the Americas Majority Foundation data are pretty persuasive. States with the highest percentage of immigrants or the largest recent influx of immigrants –19 High Immigrant Jurisdictions (HIJs) in all — are wealthier, have better employment numbers and most have better crime figures than those with fewer immigrants.”*

Border wars - Linda Chavez

“Republicans need all the votes they can get next November if they are to have any hope of retaining the White House and winning back control of Congress. But one group of voters ”” among whom the GOP has gained considerable ground over the last few elections ”” now seems about to slip away, perhaps permanently.

Hispanic voters are poised to turn several red states blue come 2008, virtually guaranteeing a Democratic presidential victory and a pickup in congressional seats as well, according to a new analysis of Hispanic voting behavior. “Border Wars: The Impact of Immigration on the Latino Vote,” released by the conservative group Americas Majority Foundation, demonstrates that congressional Republicans’ ham-handed approach to immigration will cost them dearly at the polls.”

History, heritage at heart - Retiring AFL-CIO official Chavez-Thompson decries ‘us-and-them’ views on immigration, seeks further progress for women, Latinos

“Linda Chavez-Thompson, who rose up from picking cotton at age 10 to become the highest-ranking Latino with organized labor, is going home to Texas.

Last week was the executive vice president’s last at the AFL-CIO. Chavez-Thompson, 63, started out at the organization working with Spanish-speaking laborers because nobody else spoke the language. Arlene Holt-Baker, a one-time labor organizer from California who has worked for the AFL-CIO since 1995, will serve out Chavez-Thompson’s term, which expires in 2009. When an unprecedented revolt swept the AFL-CIO 12 years ago, Chavez-Thompson was elected executive vice president, becoming the first woman and first Latino to reach such a position.”

Chavez-Thompson, a native of Lubbock, Texas, will leave the AFL-CIO on Sept. 21.

“I am blessed to have had 12 years’ worth of wonderful experiences, meeting thousands of union members and workers who have given me hope that our labor movement continues to be a major factor in their lives,” Chavez-Thompson said in her resignation letter. “

In Fundraisings Murky Corners - Candidates See Little of Millions Collected by Linda Chavez’s Family

“Linda Chavez rose to prominence in the 1980s as a tart-tongued Reagan administration official and candidate for the Senate, eventually becoming a well-known Latina voice on social issues and President Bushs choice to lead the Labor Department. With her conservative celebrity came book deals, a syndicated column, regular appearances on the Fox News Channel — and a striking but little-known success at political fundraising.

In the years since she was forced to pull her nomination as Bush’s labor secretary after admitting payments to an illegal immigrant, Chavez and her immediate family members have used phone banks and direct-mail solicitations to raise tens of millions of dollars, founding several political action committees with bankable names: the Republican Issues Committee, the Latino Alliance, Stop Union Political Abuse and the Pro-Life Campaign Committee. Their solicitations promise direct action in the “fight to save unborn lives,” a vigorous struggle against “big labor bosses” and a crippling of “liberal politics in the country.”"

Linda Chavez: Immigration policy is the problem, not immigrants

“Political analyst Linda Chavez, speaker at The Victoria College Lyceum Lecture Series, said her background in education, journalism and politics enables her to approach dispassionately the subject of immigration reform. She said the issue often lends to debate that “sheds more heat than light” on Capitol Hill, and which also has affected her personally.

While much has happened in Chavez’s life during the 11 years between her Lyceum lecture in 1995 and her speech Thursday - including being honored in 2000 by the Library of Congress as a “Living Legend,” being nominated by President George W. Bush for Secretary of Labor, and being forced to withdraw her name after it surfaced in the media that she had employed an illegal immigrant (Chavez said she had assisted the woman, not employed her) - Chavez’s message on Thursday remained similar to that of her speech in 1995.”

Linda Chavez: Now the debate on illegals can begin

Tags: ,

“Now that the Senate Judiciary Committee has passed its own version of immigration reform ”” a bipartisan effort that won support from four Republicans and all eight Democrats on the panel ”” a real national debate on this important issue can begin. Last December, the GOP-controlled House passed punitive legislation that would criminalize the 12 million illegal aliens, along with anyone else who provides them with shelter, medical or other services. Both bills also promise beefed-up border security. The House version seems more likely to generate popular support among American citizens, but it is a shortsighted measure, which, if it becomes law, won’t solve the current crisis.

Our immigration mess is like a three-legged stool. Fixing one leg is no better than doing nothing. We need immigration reform that addresses all three parts of this vexing problem: increased border security; a plan to deal with the illegal aliens already here (the vast majority of whom are hard-working, tax-paying and otherwise law-abiding members of our communities); and more flexible and realistic legal immigration policies that allow us to admit more permanent residents and guest workers as our labor needs require.”

A Soft Right for Talk Radio on Kilgore and Immigration

Linda Chavez, backed by 50,000 watts, was beaming forth the day’s headlines to Washington’s drive-time listeners: hurricanes, Cindy Sheehan, the vice president’s knees.

From her elegant pine-log retreat in a part of Loudoun County first cleared by Native Americans for their buffalo, she whetted the conservative commuter’s appetite with a promise of an Ann Coulter appearance later in the WMET-AM radio show.

Linda Chavez: Hispanics and Katrina

Tags: , , ,

What happened to the nearly 200,000 Hispanics living in and around New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit last month? I asked the question of one reporter who had called me to comment on the role race played in the evacuation fiasco, but she didn’t know. In fact, at the height of the crisis, few in the media seemed the slightest bit curious about this population, despite hundreds of stories about poverty, race, and the failure of government to rescue the most vulnerable.
