- The Recently Released Julieta Venegas: MTV Unplugged Album And Its First Single “El Presente” BOTH Continue At #1 On The Charts In Mexico

- In The U.S., The Album & Single Are Both In The Top-5 Of The “Latin Pop” Charts

- Julieta Receives Critical Praise For Her First Ever-Performance In Boston, And Fills New York’s Central Park SummerStage To Capacity - Forcing The Venue To Shut Its Doors Early – As Thousands Turn Out For Her Free Performance At The LAMC

“Venegas  [is] a true Latin pop star. Forget about Shakira. There’s a new Latina pop star in town… The adoring throng in attendance showered Venegas and her 14-piece ensemble with love, singing every word to the opener, “Limon Y Sal,” …She was a nonstop display of multi-instrumental talent: playing accordion on “Seria Feliz,” strumming guitar on “Algo Esta Cambiando” and playing electric piano on “Mirame Bien” and the gorgeously melancholic “Lento.” While the unplugged format cast an old-world, organic feel, it didn’t stop the band from treating songs distinctively. The string quartet on hand added dramatic texture to “Amores Perros” and the recent “El Presente,” a No. 1 hit in Mexico and Argentina, possessed ska-like punch. Trumpets, banjos, ukuleles and woodwinds also contributed… you couldn’t help but get caught up in the festive energy. It’s a rare pleasure to see an audience so genuinely excited - and with good reason.” Boston Herald, 7/12/08

“Venegas has fans falling for her sweet sound… More than a phenomenal voice and a clutch of hit songs, nothing flatters a pop star quite like grace and understatement. Julieta Venegas is such an artist. She made her Boston debut Thursday night, and from her simple greeting - “Hola. Buenas noches, Boston” - you’d never know she’s one of the most celebrated musicians in Latin pop today, an ambassador of good will who’s beloved by her peers far outside her native Mexico… a young singer-songwriter with a big heart and an even bigger audience… She’s no doubt the only pop star who can prompt a zealous fan to exclaim, “Oh, good! I see the accordion coming out! …The lush setting was an extension of Venegas’s new “MTV Unplugged” album, which captured her live and carefree with cameos from mutual admirers (Spanish rapper La Mala Rodríguez and uber-producer Gustavo Santaolalla, among them)… she stripped several of her songs to their cores, revealing emotions you didn’t detect the first time around… Venegas’s recent hits, the inescapable “Me Voy” and “Eres Para Mí,” both from 2006’s “Limón y Sal,” recaptured the unlikely juxtaposition of joy and heartbreak that made them so catchy in the first place. For a final encore, Venegas launched into “Andar Conmigo,” wandering away from the microphone, playing her accordion, and engaging the audience. It was time to go, but no one wanted her to. So she mouthed the lyrics, needlessly: The audience, louder each refrain, sang the song for - and to - her.” - Boston Globe, 7/12/08

“Venegas is one of the Mexican rockers who are spinning together everything they hear — rock, funk and pop from the United States; boleros; reggae; electronics; accordions — in songs that are as engaging and catchy as they are ambitious… Venegas brings sly insights to love songs… [and] is now a full-fledged hit maker” NY  Times

Julieta Venegas came backed by a 13-piece band that included a string quartet, brass, keys and percussion…By the time she came on, the venue was filled to capacity (many latecomers were turned back at the door)…It was impressive to notice that Venegas did something seemingly impossible – she played what seemed to be an intimate show to a crowd of thousands. She showcased not only her vocal chops but also her ability on the guitar, piano and accordion, going through a mix of pop, rock and more traditionally sounding material…Venegas’ music has quite a universal appeal.”

“Latin alternative music —a deft umbrella term for a category-defying assortment of sounds — just might be the perpetual underdog. Its assets are eccentricity, modest commercial expectations, dedicated clusters of fans and the stubbornness of artists determined to make music their own way. Stacked up against it are all the odds facing any independent music that isn’t geared for standard radio formats — low budgets, limited exposure — along with, inevitably, the language barrier. “*

KCRW DJ RAUL CAMPOS PRESENTS “LOTERIA BEATS MIXTAPE, VOL. 1” SET FOR RELEASE OCTOBER 23RD ON NACIONAL RECORDS

Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

The Latin Electronic/Funk Mixtape-Style Album Features Remixes and Tracks from Nortec Collective, Thievery Corporation, David Byrne, Pacha Massive, Sergio Mendes and Many Other Leading Acts

Nacional Records is proud to present Raul Campos’ (host of the influential “Nocturna” show on Santa Monica public radio station KCRW 89.9FM/ KCRW.com) “Loteria Beats Mixtape, Vol. 1”. The album, to be released on October 23rd, is the first of its kind in this genre with the flow of a mixtape and features a cooler-than-cool list of not only acclaimed electronic acts from around the globe like Nortec Collective (Tijuana), The Pinker Tones (Barcelona), Pacha Massive (The Bronx) and Mexican Institute of Sound (Mexico City), but also rare remixes of such artists as Thievery Corporation, David Byrne and Sergio Mendes as well as up-and-comers Cuarto Poder, Los Rumbers, and Choc Quib Town.

It’s only fitting that the first Latin alternative/electronic mixtape of this kind comes from Campos, who along with KCRW music director Nic Harcourt has been continually recognized for introducing Latin Alternative artists to a wider audience and supporting bands like Café Tacuba, Ozomatli and Julieta Venegas throughout their careers.

When he is not busy hosting his week-nightly show “Nocturna” on KCRW, native angeleno Raul Campos continues to make a name for himself as a leading tastemaker DJ, and has recently rocked the decks to sold-out venues like LA’s Hollywood Bowl and NYC’s Central Park Summerstage hosting the 8th annual LAMC (Latin Alternative Music Conference) for the second year in a row.

Latin Alternative Music Conference Report: Day 2 July 12

“Thank goodness that day two of the LAMC started with its first panel discussion at 11. Although the LAMC gets it right in not forcing conference participants to choose between simultaneous events, there was one regrettable overlap. It almost killed me to choose between catching one of Puerto Rico’s most exciting exports, synth-Brit-pop rockers Circo made up by members of the former, excellent Cure-esque band with a great name Manjar de Los Dioses or Feast of the Gods and witnessing a predominantly electronic duo like Pacha Massive leave the loops and Mac at home and strip down to the bone during the LAMC acoustic showcase.”

Mala Rodriguez Concludes Her Appearance at the LAMC with Great Success - Microsoft Zune helps propel Spanish urban artist to new heights at music conference

“Featured talent, Mala Rodriguez wrapped up her Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) engagement to great success and fanfare this week. Thanks to a jam-packed schedule of media interviews, concert performances and fan appearances, Mala kept the attention of many of the industry’s most established insiders. With support provided by Microsoft Zune, Mala met with fans at LAMC’s exclusive Zune Lounge where she discussed trends and shared her insights and thoughts regarding her recent domestic album release: Malamarismo.

Throughout her time at the LAMC, Mala also performed at various venues to a capacity crowd. Conference goers and sponsors attributed this year’s increased success to the draw of feature artists like Mala livening up the show.

“So I finally headed out to the Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where the Latin Alternative Music Conferences headquarters are stationed. At the showroom, you are inundated with an array of products ranging from Gibson Guitars to Microsofts Zune, which is trying to beat the iPod in its own game.

There are also the trademark free condoms, Latino publications, labels and of course the presence of various artists who were looking to get some press time. I arrived shortly before the Midem cocktail party at 1 PM, where professionals of various areas schmoozed and exchanged business cards while enjoying a glass of wine or two.”

The venue is a small room located in the citys Lower East Side also dubbed East Village, and is located about a block away from Katz Deli, which became known for the infamous Meg Ryan fake orgasm scene on 1988s “When Harry Met Sally”.”

We are thrilled to have this much talent converging on the Elias/Avenida studio this week and to be part of that trendmaking by hosting these artists here at our New York studio.”

PACHA MASSIVE Featured on NBC Las Vegas; Debut album out Feb. 20th

After Landing Airplay On Such Leading Tastemaker Stations as KCRW (Los Angeles), KEXP (Seattle), and KUT (Austin) for their Song “Don’t Let Go” from the Soundtrack to the Box Office Hit “La Mujer de Mi Hermano,’ Pacha Massive Gears Up for the Release of Full Length Debut All Good Things

First Single “Don’t Let Go” Featured in NBC “Las Vegas’ Last Week

Winners of the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) Battle of the Bands, the Bronx-based Pacha Massive Have Shared the Stage With Artists Like Ozomatli, Aterciopelados, Sidestepper, and Yerba Buena

“Their songs are high-energy, funky Latin jams that combine Colombian cumbia, Afro-Cuban son, Jamaican reggae-dancehall and all manner of breakbeats, dub and drum-and-bass rhythms”
– NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Straight from the boogie-down Bronx, Nacional Records is proud to introduce its first U.S.-based signing, Pacha Massive. Pacha Massive (from “Pachamama’ meaning “Mother Earth”), is the creative collaboration between Dominican-born Nova (keys / guitar/ writer/ producer) and Colombian-born Maya (writer/bass). The result is a funky fusion of traditional Latin rhythms like Colombian cumbia, Dominican palo, reggae, dancehall, dub and electronica sure to get the pachanga fired up.

The duo met in New York while working on a project with Ivan Benavides (Sidestepper, Bloque, Carlos Vives) where a creative collaboration between the two led to the formation of Pacha Massive in 2005. Pacha Massive landed an impressive first gig opening for Colombian rockers Aterciopelados at Madison Square Garden and has since gone on to share the stage with artists like Ozomatli, Sidestepper, and Yerba Buena. After winning the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) Battle of the Bands contest (previous winners include Kinky and Los Abandoned who have both gone on to launch successful careers) the duo caught the attention of Nacional Records. Pacha Massive’s infectious track “Don’t Let Go” was featured last year on the Nacional Records soundtrack to the box-office hit “La Mujer de Mi Hermano,” and landed airplay on such leading tastemaker stations as Indie 103.1 (Los Angeles), KCRW (Los Angeles), KEXP (Seattle), and KUT (Austin). The new album “All Good Things’ is already being hotly anticipated, with first single “Don’t Let Go” recently selected by NBC to air in the popular show “Las Vegas’ last week.

Nova’s Dominican roots exposed him to a lot of traditional music like palo in addition to music from England and the U.S. played on Dominican radio. His passion for music began early, and as a youth he began building instruments out of whatever he could find using cans for drums, 2 X 4’s, rubber bands, etc. Nova recalls “When I came to the U.S. I got my first instrument on my 15th birthday, a drum set, and as the years passed I picked up guitar, bass, keys, percussion and finally the instrument that allowed me to solidify my ideas in a flexible and efficient way”¦.a Mac.” Nova describes his musical influences not necessarily as musicians, but rather as people “who have influenced me in the way I make music” citing Bruce Lee, Benjamin Franklin and Leonardo DaVinci as “people who had a bigger perspective and were more holistic in their craft”.

Maya was born in Colombia and raised in NYC’s Washington Heights. Her love of music also started at an early age with the violin and later became a career choice when she went to Cuba after graduating to study double bass. Her musical influences range from classical, salsa, bolero and traditional Colombian folklore to reggae, house and artists like Manu Chao, Hector Lavoe and Sidestepper.

“All Good Things” the group’s first album, will be released on February 20th, and is self-produced by Nova with additional mixing in Monterrey, Mexico by Alejandro Rosso of platinum-selling Mexican act Plastilina Mosh. For Nova, a seasoned musician who has played with acts like New York reggae-latin fusion band King Chango, self-producing was a positive experience “because no one knows your material better than yourself and you have the freedom to experiment until you stumble upon what you were looking for.” According to Maya, “our first album has a very personal sound to it. Written by both of us and being produced by Nova, it has a very Pacha sound”. Nova adds, “most songs deal with the struggles of everyday life, perseverance and those hardships we all go through to achieve our dreams”.
