We Told You Julieta Was Genial! - Blogamole
Tags: julieta venegas, latin america
Yeah, yeah yeah…Everyone’s hot on Julieta now, but we’ve been hooked on Ms. Venegas since her darker De Mis Pasos days. Finally, Julieta’s well-deserved praise has translated from Latin America to los Estados Unidos. With a successful unplugged album keeping her in the top five spots of the Latin Billboard pop chart, and a new single out, the Mexicana is taking the Northeast by storm.”*

- The Recently Released Julieta Venegas: MTV Unplugged Album And Its First Single “El Presente” BOTH Continue At #1 On The Charts In Mexico
- In The U.S., The Album & Single Are Both In The Top-5 Of The “Latin Pop” Charts
- Julieta Receives Critical Praise For Her First Ever-Performance In Boston, And Fills New York’s Central Park SummerStage To Capacity - Forcing The Venue To Shut Its Doors Early – As Thousands Turn Out For Her Free Performance At The LAMC
“Venegas [is] a true Latin pop star. Forget about Shakira. There’s a new Latina pop star in town… The adoring throng in attendance showered Venegas and her 14-piece ensemble with love, singing every word to the opener, “Limon Y Sal,” …She was a nonstop display of multi-instrumental talent: playing accordion on “Seria Feliz,” strumming guitar on “Algo Esta Cambiando” and playing electric piano on “Mirame Bien” and the gorgeously melancholic “Lento.” While the unplugged format cast an old-world, organic feel, it didn’t stop the band from treating songs distinctively. The string quartet on hand added dramatic texture to “Amores Perros” and the recent “El Presente,” a No. 1 hit in Mexico and Argentina, possessed ska-like punch. Trumpets, banjos, ukuleles and woodwinds also contributed… you couldn’t help but get caught up in the festive energy. It’s a rare pleasure to see an audience so genuinely excited - and with good reason.” – Boston Herald, 7/12/08
“Venegas has fans falling for her sweet sound… More than a phenomenal voice and a clutch of hit songs, nothing flatters a pop star quite like grace and understatement. Julieta Venegas is such an artist. She made her Boston debut Thursday night, and from her simple greeting - “Hola. Buenas noches, Boston” - you’d never know she’s one of the most celebrated musicians in Latin pop today, an ambassador of good will who’s beloved by her peers far outside her native Mexico… a young singer-songwriter with a big heart and an even bigger audience… She’s no doubt the only pop star who can prompt a zealous fan to exclaim, “Oh, good! I see the accordion coming out! …The lush setting was an extension of Venegas’s new “MTV Unplugged” album, which captured her live and carefree with cameos from mutual admirers (Spanish rapper La Mala Rodríguez and uber-producer Gustavo Santaolalla, among them)… she stripped several of her songs to their cores, revealing emotions you didn’t detect the first time around… Venegas’s recent hits, the inescapable “Me Voy” and “Eres Para Mí,” both from 2006’s “Limón y Sal,” recaptured the unlikely juxtaposition of joy and heartbreak that made them so catchy in the first place. For a final encore, Venegas launched into “Andar Conmigo,” wandering away from the microphone, playing her accordion, and engaging the audience. It was time to go, but no one wanted her to. So she mouthed the lyrics, needlessly: The audience, louder each refrain, sang the song for - and to - her.” - Boston Globe, 7/12/08
“Venegas is one of the Mexican rockers who are spinning together everything they hear — rock, funk and pop from the United States; boleros; reggae; electronics; accordions — in songs that are as engaging and catchy as they are ambitious… Venegas brings sly insights to love songs… [and] is now a full-fledged hit maker” – NY Times
Julieta Venegas came backed by a 13-piece band that included a string quartet, brass, keys and percussion…By the time she came on, the venue was filled to capacity (many latecomers were turned back at the door)…It was impressive to notice that Venegas did something seemingly impossible – she played what seemed to be an intimate show to a crowd of thousands. She showcased not only her vocal chops but also her ability on the guitar, piano and accordion, going through a mix of pop, rock and more traditionally sounding material…Venegas’ music has quite a universal appeal.”
- Miami New Times, 7/14/08 (reporting from Central Park Summerstage in New York)

Julieta Venagas: A Waifish Mexican Rocker You’ve Never Heard Of
Tags: julieta venegas, Tijuana
I have an obsession and her name is Julieta Venegas.
These days the hottest rock music comes out of the Latin world and a waifish Mexican rockera you’ve probably never heard of leads the pack. Julieta Venegas was born in California, but the Tijuana-raised singer is no crossover queen–her eclectic, Grammy-winning pop and rock compositions are all-Spanish-all-the-time. She’s a rich and poetic lyricist, with a voice at times sweet and bouncy, at times haunting. Oh dear, stop me before I hit Repeat yet again.”*

“For her [Unplugged], the smart, lyrical singer-songwriter made sure to never zap any energy from her thoughtful, spirited and sometimes offbeat brand of Latin pop and rock with a Mexican twist. [Venegas] gathered a studio full of great artists – including guests Gustavo Santaolalla, Marisa Monte and La Mala Rodríguez – then comfortably refashioned staples as well as four fresh tracks. There’s no pigeonholing her. “El Presente,” one of the new tunes, [is] breezy, up-tempo and perfect for radio… then she throws in “Algún Día,” a delightful tuba- and banjo-fueled jaunt” - Dallas Morning News

In celebration of the highly anticipated worldwide premiere of “Julieta Venegas MTV Unplugged,” MTV Tr3s is giving Julieta fans an unprecedented and intimate look at the Mexican singer/songwriter through its marquee “Artists Speaking Tr3s” superstar campaign, beginning on May 16th. The campaign will run for more than six weeks and features nine vignettes, co-created with Julieta, that show a side of her that fans have never before seen. There’s also exclusive programming, online and mobile experiences and several exclusive performances and appearances that make up “Artists Speaking Tr3s: Julieta Venegas.”

San Francisco, CA MAY 6, 2008 - CONVERGENCE will showcase the most progressive Latin alternative bands and artists whose music challenges and provokes the listener. This mini festival within a festival will present three consecutive concerts with genres of Latin alternative ranging from Noise to Punk to Indie, Reggae and New Wave. .
The Latin Alternative Rock scene in Northern California has been developing and growing steadily for years, yet there has been no festival exclusively showcasing this genre until now. CONVERGENCE will be the first Latin Alternative rock concert series to do this. The goals of CONVERGENCE will be to:
• Support emerging local talent
• Firmly establish continuous Latin Alternative Rock programming in Northern California
• Encourage collaborations and foster community amongst all alternative and independent rock artists locally, nationally and internationally.
• Introduce new Latin Alternative Rock “Buzz” bands
ABOUT MISSION CREEK MUSIC and ARTS FESTIVAL
Mission Creek was founded in 1996, as an effort to promote local Bay Area music and eventually other forms of art that now include film, dance, visual arts, literature, and multimedia performance. Local Bay Area musician/artist Jeff Ray founded the festival in order to fill a cultural void that existed in San Francisco. Until Mission Creek was created, there was no known festival that promoted Bay Area musicians and artists. Now in its 12th year, the festival has grown tremendously in size and attendance, from a one-day event with eight bands and an audience of approximately 100 to a multi-day event with up to 180 acts, serving an audience of approximately 3,000. Twelve years and over 600 events later, MCMAF has reliably featured a wide range of Bay Area talent, and has introduced many local musicians who have since achieved international acclaim. After more than a decade of unrivaled programming, MCMAF has become a destination for both national and international talent.
THE ARTISTS – CONVERGENCE I – “THE BRIGHT SPOT”
Volumen Cero has been at the forefront of Latinos that perform nontraditional music. In 2004, Volumen Cero became one of the first Latin Alternative groups ever to be profiled on MTV’s Advance Warning, which aired on MTV and MTV2. In 2005, Volumen Cero received Latin Grammy Nominations for best rock album by a duo or group for their critically acclaimed album Estelar and guitarist Marthin Chan was also nominated for best rock song, as writer for JD Natasha’s “Lagrimas.” With the release of their third album Estelar, the band’s first single “Autos” spent over 10 weeks in the #1 spot and 20 weeks in the top 3 of R&R’s Latin Rock Chart. The band is currently putting the finishing touches on, I CAN SEE THE BRIGHT SPOT, their fourth studio album set to released mid-2008.
The May Fire: San Francisco has done it again. Once more the great city by the Bay has fashioned a musical product worth buzzing over. Right And Wrong has captured and liberated local listeners with sassy songs and adrenaline filled choruses, which echo that of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs Fever To Tell. Their liveliness has been compared to that of Metric and it’s quite apparent that there’s no end in sight for the young band. – Zero Magazine
Monte Negro: You are what you eat.† Monte Negro, a bilingual Los Angeles based rock band, has devoured enough music genres over the years to do justice to the bilingual and bicultural musicians that constitute the group.† Digesting healthy portions of Jane’s Addiction, The Cure, The Clash, and the Sex Pistols, Monte Negro has also piled onto its proverbial plate Latin-alternative rockers such as Caifanes, Los Fabuloso Cadillacs, Maldita Vecindad, Mano Negra, Soda Stereo, and Spinetta.† As with any good meal, Monte Negro combines sophisticated taste influences with unique combinations of flavor, and stews it all together with time and a pinch of luck.
Lualta: “In 2002, local sextet Lualta received a San Diego Music Award nomination for “Best New Artist.” After one listen to the band’s latest, five-song EP “Catapult” (Red Camera Recordings), it is immediately evident why. Lualta creates a kaleidoscope of layered styles and textures that is simultaneously engaging and sedating. Songs tend to start out light and easy before exploding into an electrifying fusion of psychedelic, R&B and garage rock. Hazy, druggy guitars mutate into down-and-dirty, pedal-heavy hooks and melt with tender, melodic keyboards. Lualta’s solid instrumentation, combined with lead singer Michael Hernandez’s pleasantly screechy, cigarette-scorched vocals, induces hypnotic reverie then jerks you awake.”-Claire Caraska, SignOn San Diego
THE ARTSTS – CONVERGENCE II - HEAT
Bat Makumba: The brainchild of Brazilian natives Alex Koberle and Emiliano Benevides and Americano bassist Carl Remde, Bat Makumba is the crossroads between the equatorial beats of Brazil and the punk, rock and funk influences of the U.S. and Europe. Locals to San Francisco, Bat Makumba’s show is a hip renegade carnaval party full of tropicalia tinged ska, punk influenced forro, and rock infused samba. Bat Makumba’s live show brings together an international palette of musicians and instrumentation (including accordion, zabumba, megaphone, clarinet and alfaia). Named after the 70s classic Tropicalia song by Caetano Veloso + Gilberto Gil (popularized by Os Mutantes), “Bat Makumba” loosely translates to mean the mixing of Brazilian traditionalism with international pop culture. Don’t miss this kinetic, percussive music… join the renegade carnaval party that is Bat Makumba!
Chana: Influenced as much by Stereolab and Gorillaz as by Aterciopelados and Julieta Venegas, Chana is an LA-based singer whose tropical sound could be described as global hip-pop. Born in New York City and reared by a party-loving Dominican family, her father’s salsa and R&B records were a sonic constant while growing up. After coming to LA, Chana began collaborating with producer Marthin Chan, whose previous work with Volumen Cero had earned him a Latin Grammy nomination. Working out of Chan’s garage in Echo Park, the duo began collaborating in 2005, and were aided by friend Jorge Elbrecht of the New York art collective Lansing-Dreiden. Their first batch of demos includes “No Me Mandes Flores,” which sounds like Andrea Echeverri fronting a funk band; “A Veces,” whose swampy sonics and bouncy bass give off a dub feel; and “Icaro,” a jagged, thrilling rush of pop.
The Cuban Cowboys: Mixing traditional Cuban Son and Montuno with indie rock ain’t easy. But it is a blast. The Cuban Cowboys bring post-punk sensibilities straight to the heart of the Buena Vista Social club. Armed with mambo riffs, swooning surf guitar, and intelligent lyrics, the band is steadily building a following along both U.S. coasts.”Without a doubt, the Cuban Cowboys put on one of the best shows in the local pop scene” says the NY Daily News.
Velorio: The energy of the live shows, the variety of the songs, and the diversity of the audience all reflect the many praxes of Velorio the band.† Velorio manifests the linguistic power of music to unite people, tongues and ideas.
THE ARTISTS – COVERGENCE III - CRASH
Firme: Firme (pronounced “Fear-May”) has been energizing crowds across California for 10 years, honing their distinct sound. Firme’s trademark sound often slides seductively from rock, to reggae, to Latin, and bring you back full circle.
No Way Jose: No Way Jose is a Southern California punk band that has been building a buzz in the LA music scene. NWJ mixes their Southern California punk, Tex-Mex, and Mexican-American influences to create their own sound they call “Spanglish Punk.”
The Graves Brothers Deluxe: Bela Lugosi and Elvis Presley both died on Stoo Odom’s birthday. (This is true.) The GRAVES BROTHERS DELUXE, disembodied musical spirits from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, thus chose Odom eagerly when looking for host bodies to express themselves. New Orleans native/ bassist/ vocalist/ recovering archaeologist Odom shares the current possessÈe duties with San Franciscans Willy the Mailman and Marco Villalobos.
Sergio Iglesias and the Latin Love MACHINE: “Armed with a toilet plunger and a rotating band of musicians, Sergio Iglesias is here to ruin the party. Maybe you’ve seen Sergio Iglesias and Los Magnificos fill the Hemlock Tavern with a joyful, festive cacophony. Or caught Sergio Iglesias and Los Bulliciosos nearly destroy the City College of San Francisco campus. If you were lucky, you might’ve seen Iglesias with his signature plunger and a tape player perform solo in and outside the Civic Center, Powell, and Montgomery BART stations, wailing atop trash cans, plunging the ground, and bewildering tourists and locals alike. But even if you did see all these shows, you still never know what to expect except to be surprised.” –-Sarah Han - SF Bay Guardian

Conga Room to Offer ”One-Stop” Latin Destination with Scheduled Fall 08 Launch at L.A. Live
Tags: Celia Cruz, Cuba, Cuban, Cuisine, Jennifer Lopez, Juanes, julieta venegas, Mexico, radio, Shakira
Dubbed the Latin House of Blues, the original Conga Room featured the best in local and international Latin artists, bringing together thousands of patrons seeking great music, dancing, food, drinks and atmosphere. Now, as it readies to reopen its doors this fall, the new Conga Room is poised to reclaim its position as the preeminent Latin music venue. Founded by entrepreneur Brad Gluckstein and co-owned by Jimmy Smits, Jennifer Lopez, Paul Rodriguez and Sheila E., the venue is on track to launch at L.A. Live, the hot new entertainment complex across from the Staples Center. The new Conga Room will offer a significantly larger, more sophisticated destination for loyal patrons and the anticipated twenty million complex visitors seeking an exciting, authentic Latin sabor.
“The Latin music scene has remained largely fragmented,” explains Gluckstein. “But the new Conga Room at L.A. Live will change that. Come this fall, the preeminent Latin and world music performers, the best atmosphere and the most inventive Latin food and drinks will be under one roof. The new Conga Room will be a one-stop destination for top Latin entertainment and culture!”
Having swept onto the L.A. social scene in 1998, the Conga Room earned a following with its hip ambience and hot performers. It hosted record launches, movie debuts, award shows and parties, including the 2001 Latin Grammy Award Presentation. It featured concerts by top Cuban and Latin tropical stars such as Celia Cruz and the Buena Vista Social Club and its stage was graced by the likes of Shakira, Juanes and Carlos Santana. The Conga Room broadened its musical repertoire beyond salsa to spotlight popular artists in other genres: rock en Español (e.g., Aterciopelados, Julieta Venegas), world beat (e.g., Susana Baca, Lila Downs, Hugh Masekela, Bebel Gilberto), jazz (e.g., Billy Cobham, Poncho Sanchez, Jack DeJohnette), urban (e.g., Common, Wyclef Jean) and pop/rock (e.g., Jose Feliciano, Nelly Furtado, Los Lobos). After nearly a decade, the original Conga Room closed its doors in May 2006.
With its rebirth at L.A. Live, the Conga Room will again host a broad array of artists and parties, many in the wake of entertainment, social, political and sporting events at the nearby Staples Center, Nokia Theatre, Club Nokia, ESPN, and JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Hotels. It will also be able to reach global audiences through onsite TV/radio production broadcasting. For larger Latin-flavored events, the venue has access to the outdoor Nokia Plaza, which can hold several thousand people.
Encompassing 15,000 square feet and accommodating 1,100 patrons (three times its former capacity), the Conga Room will scintillate audiences with world-class performances, pan-Latin cuisine and a distinctive architecture and design motif that aggregates contemporary elements from Mexico, Barcelona and the Caribbean. Gluckstein adds, “The new Conga Room will provide an unmatched cultural immersion in the most stunning venue in the heart of LA!”

Julieta Venegas to Record Twentieth Edition of MTV Unplugged Series
Tags: Argentina, Chile, Colombia, DVD, julieta venegas, latin america, Mexico, mexico city, MTV Tr3s, Spain, television, Tijuana, Venezuela
MTV Latin America, a unit of Viacom Inc. (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), announced today that Sony/BMG singer/songwriter Julieta Venegas will record the next edition of its MTV Unplugged franchise. This edition of the show marks the franchise’s twentieth edition produced by MTV Latin America and the first MTV Unplugged to be taped in Mexico City. Julieta Venegas MTV Unplugged will be recorded in March 2008 and will premiere on MTV Latin America, MTV Tr3s and MTV Spain in June 2008 (exact air date to be announced).
The Julieta Venegas MTV Unplugged will provide an acoustic platform for the Tijuana native to debut new songs and perform some of her biggest hits in an intimate setting before a live audience. Featuring elaborate arrangements, very interesting instrumentation and surprising artist collaborations, the show will be available to more than 100 MTVs around the world and will be offered to select broadcast television channels. In addition, Julieta Venegas MTV Unplugged will be released on CD and DVD and will be distributed worldwide in June 2008 by Sony/BMG.
“We are very happy to celebrate the music of Julieta with an MTV Unplugged,” said José Tillán, Senior Vice President of Creative, Content and Music for MTV/VH1 Latin America. “The show will have an intimate musical platform through which her established hits coupled with some new songs will be performed by a very interesting musical ensemble. I am sure it will delight the MTV audience and guarantee a unique experience for our viewers. This Unplugged is sure to be very special.”
“I am very happy about doing this project with MTV. It really is a great challenge for me to recreate the music I have already composed and take it to another level; to whom I am today,” commented Julieta Venegas. “I am looking forward to a great party. Something nice, festive and fun and with the team we’re putting together, it’s going to be great … how exciting!
“We are thrilled to bring forth this MTV Unplugged with Julieta Venegas as it will reveal an intimate Julieta, with lots of charisma and overall showcase her amazing talent,” commented Miguel Trujillo, General Director of Sony/BMG Music Entertainment Mexico. “In addition, this event will demonstrate the quality and good taste with which MTV presents its Unpluggeds.”
Julieta Venegas is known not only for her amazing musical talent and as a gifted songwriter, but also for her distinct interpretive style which has allowed her to take her music outside of her native Mexico. Having been invited by various artists to collaborate musically and with her voice, Venegas has demonstrated her remarkable talent and acceptance internationally.
Venegas’ last studio album Limón y Sal achieved triple platinum and gold status in Mexico, United States, Chile and Argentina, in addition to almost receiving double platinum status in Spain. Limón y Sal also achieved gold status in Central America, Colombia, Switzerland and Venezuela and her music was edited for the first time with this album in Italy and Switzerland where it has been widely accepted. Throughout her 11-year career, Venegas has garnered several international awards including a 2004 Latin Grammy for “Best Alternative Music Album.” In 2004, she was the big winner at the MTV Video Music Awards Latin America, garnering three trophies: “Artist of the Year,” “Best Solo Artist” and “Best Artist – Mexico.” Venegas was also named “Best Solo Artist” at Los Premios MTV Latin America 2006 and “Best Pop Artist” at Los Premios MTV Latin America 2007. “*
