OTHER STORIES IN THIS ISSUE:
David Archuleta on Top
David Archuleta, the first Hispanic contestant to make it as a finalist on American Idol, talks to PEOPLE en Espanol about his newfound fame, how he almost did not make it, and his plans for the future. “I’ve always imagined myself on stage,” says Archuleta, who at 17-years-old, placed second, after David Cook, on the hit reality show series.
Even after millions of votes and his “Archie” fan club, he still remains humble. “I thought nobody liked to hear me sing,” says Archuleta. However, his accomplishments are nothing short of a miracle. About a year and a half ago, Archuleta received medical treatment for paralysis in his vocal cords. “The doctor said there is somebody up there who wants him to sing because, medically speaking, he should not be able to,” says Archuleta’s father.
He’s now gearing up for the American Idols Live! Tour 2008 and will also start recording his first album as a solo artist. “I feel a connection when I hear other people singing. If I can accomplish that, it would make me feel so good,” says Archuleta. (Page 143)

Drug Trafficking, Violence, and Repression - IRC Americas Program
Filed under [ Non-US News ]
Tags: border, Ciudad Juarez, crime, Film, Javier Bardem, Mexico, police
Fiction: In the film No Country for Old Men (Cohen Brothers, 2007), evil, as represented by Javier Bardem’s excellently portrayed drug trafficker-paid hitman, moves implacably through the Chihuahua desert’s dusty Texan towns, injuring, killing, destroying, getting what he wants. Good, personified by Tommy Lee Jones’ also excellent tired old Sheriff, is impotent against the triumphant march of evil, which he watches, resigned, on the verge of his retirement.
The reality: Holy Week, 2008. Paloma de Villa, with less than 2,000 inhabitants, set in the Chihuahua desert on the border with Columbus, New Mexico. The police commandant and six officers, between them making up the entire municipal police force, resign. They hand in their notice because of the wave of drug-related killings and kidnappings and they exile themselves on the U.S. side of the border. In just 81 days, from Jan. 1 to March 21, organized crime has beaten all records for killings in the state of Chihuahua: 175 people murdered plus 40 corpses found in a Ciudad Juarez mass grave ups the macabre homicide figure to 215 for the year. In March alone, 107 people have been killed in this border town.
The law is impotent against the advance of evil.”*

ROCIO TRUJILLO, a disc jockey known as Cio Babee, presses a button on the studio switchboard and begins a two-minute gossip report. In high-energy delivery that is two parts Spanish and one part English, she informs her radio audience this January day about the Spanish actor Javier Bardem’s recently announced Oscar nomination.
What is noticeably missing from her Hollywood update, though, is the death of the actor Heath Ledger two days before. It seems every media outlet in the nation is covering it except this one: WBON 98.5 FM, La Nueva Fiesta.
