"The Imagen Foundation, in cooperation with Honorary Chair Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (D-CA), will host an event tomorrow night to celebrate Women’s History Month by honoring the contributions that Latinas have made in their communities. Rosa Rosales, National President of the League of United Latin American Citizens along with six other extraordinary Latinas and Latina Magazine will be recognized for their leadership and work. They will be joined by a prestigious Honorary Committee including Congresswomen Grace F. Napolitano (D-CA), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), Linda T. Sanchez (D-CA), and Loretta Sanchez (D-CA).

“Rosa’s work has made a positive impact on the Latina community and is an inspiration to countless young people nationwide,” said Honorary Chair, Congresswoman Hilda Solis. “This dinner, being held at the Library of Congress, will give Latina leaders in business, government, media, and entertainment the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of Rosa Rosales and the other distinguished honorees.”

President of The Imagen Foundation Helen Hernandez said, “The Imagen Foundation’s early mission to recognize and celebrate positive portrayals of Latinas in television and film has been expanded. This year’s honorees include Latinas from many different professional fields, all of whom are making positive contributions to our country’s overall social fabric.” Hernandez continued, “This event provides the Latina community with the chance to honor those who have made phenomenal progress in their professional careers, as well as teach young Latina women that they can truly make a difference.”

The League of United Latin American Citizens is the largest and oldest Hispanic civil rights organizations in the United States. As a member of the League of United Latin American Citizens, Rosa Rosales’ involvement with the organization spans over three decades. She now serves as national president and has also served as National Vice President for the Southwest. In 1994, she was reelected to a record-breaking fourth term and the second woman to serve four years as LULAC Texas State Director and was the first woman district director. Additionally, Ms. Rosales serves on the Board of the LULAC National Educational Service Centers (LNESC) and is passionate about her work in education. Her involvement in the community is underscored by her participation on numerous civic boards. She has received many honors and awards for her continued service to LULAC, including: American GI Forum Leadership Award, the LULAC Women of the Year Award and the Cesar Chavez March for Justice Award and the 100 Most Influential Hispanics.

The other honorees include Univision Television talk show host, Cristina Saralegui, former CNN reporter Maria Hinojosa, Latina Magazine, national health care advocate Gloria Rodriguez, environmental justice youth advocates from New York’s UPROSE Jennifer Casamayor, Crystal Castro, and Judith Cardenas.

The Nielsen Company is the presenting sponsor of the Latina Leaders-Celebrating Our Voices Dinner. Grifols, Inc. is the major sponsor of the evening, with several other corporations joining as sponsors including AT&T, Southwest Airlines, Arbitron and El Proyecto Del Barrio.

The Imagen Foundation, best known for its annual Imagen Awards which honors positive portrayals of Latinos and Latino cultures in television and film, was established in 1985. Imagen provides access, education, and resources to Latinos in the industry and those looking for careers in entertainment. Imagen has expanded its Awards to include events that profile positive and successful Latino/as as a way to share with the nation their positive influence on society and insight into the U.S. Latino experience.

"Hispanic Business magazine editor and publisher JesÚs Chavarrí announced that Ms. Val Zavala, Anchor of Life and Times, and V.P. of News and Public Affairs, will be the Mistress of Ceremonies for the magazine’s annual EOY Awards Gala. The EOY honors the top Hispanic entrepreneurs in the United States and will be held on Thursday, November 8 at the Los Angeles Marriott Downtown. It will feature 15 of the nation’s top Hispanic entrepreneurs in five industry-specific categories.

“Val Zavala’s life’s work is influential in the U.S. Hispanic community on a local and national level,” said Chavarrí. "Her work in the positive portrayal of Hispanics in the media is integral in the current Hispanic enterprise landscape.”

An accomplished reporter/anchor, Zavala joined KCET in 1987 with six years of reporting experience at commercial news stations. Multi-talented as she is accomplished in her 19 years at KCET Zavala has not only served as a reporter/anchor; she has also served as a co-host, documentary producer and executive producer.

Her extensive work has garnered ten L.A. Area Emmy Awards, six Golden Mikes, two Imagen Awards for Excellence for positive portrayal of Latinos, and the “Avance” award from Hispanic Americans for Fairness in Media honoring those for longevity and integrity in broadcast journalism. She was also named one of the hundred most influential Latinos by Hispanic Business Magazine (2006).

Consistently working towards the advancement of Hispanics portrayal in the media, Zavala serves as a long-standing member of the California Chicano News Media Association, as well as the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. She has also served as a keynote speaker, mistress of ceremonies, moderator and panelist for numerous organizations including The United Way of Greater Los Angeles, MALDEF (Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund), Zocalo and the Walt Disney Hall speakers’ series.

“It is a privilege to be celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit,” states Zavala. “With the growing income divide between the wealthy and poor in the Hispanic community, business ventures are critical for the upward mobility of our fellow Hispanics.” "

"At a time when many Americans are of the opinion that there are too many Mexicans around, it is time for the 2007 Imagen Awards "to encourage and recognize the positive portrayal of Latinos."

I write on the occasion of these awards to observe that the genius of popular entertainments is that they can seek and they often find the correlation between fear and desire. Americans fear what we have always feared -- a history that is out of our control. The genius of popular entertainments is that they give us a way of transforming objects of fear into objects of desire."

"At the 22nd Annual Imagen Awards on Saturday, July 28 at 7 PM, The Imagen Foundation will bestow the President’s Award to Disney-ABC Television Group with an acceptance by Anne Sweeney, Co-chairman, Disney Media Networks, President, Disney-ABC Television Group; the Lifetime Achievement Award to Walter Ulloa, Chairman & CEO, Entravision; the Creative Achievement Award to America Ferrara, star of ABC’s Ugly Betty; and the Norman Lear Writer’s Award to Cynthia Cidre, writer of Cane, an upcoming CBS Latino-cast series, it was announced this morning along with the 2007 nominees at The Television Academy ceremony, hosted by actors Constance Marie and Eddie Matos.

The Imagen Awards were established in 1985 to encourage and recognize the positive portrayal of Latinos in all media and to increase Latino representation at all levels of the entertainment industry.

“Our move to the Walt Disney Concert Hall in collaboration with The Music Center is a very ambitious one. It more than doubles the size of last year’s gala and reinforces the bridge between the Latino and entertainment communities,” stated Helen Hernandez, Founder of The Imagen Foundation and creator of the pioneering Imagen Awards, which annually draws A-list stars and luminaries from the world of Latino entertainment.

The move became a necessity to accommodate this year’s explosion of interest in every area from award submissions and talent involvement to attendance and sponsorship.

"A testament to the tremendously successful and collaborative partnership between The Vidal Partnership, Animus Group, Zeal Television and Fox Sports en Español, “El Reto Final Nissan,” the groundbreaking five-part soccer-themed reality series, won “Best Foreign Language Program” honors at the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications’ NAMIC 13th Annual Vision Awards. The winner was announced at a private reception Tuesday, March 27, at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, California. Fox Sports en Español bested finalists ESPN Deportes and TuTv/Bandamax for the network’s second win in the category in three years. The NAMIC Vision Awards is the only entertainment industry event recognizing achievements in multi-ethnic, original cable programming.

“What started out as one of The Vidal Partnership’s many innovative client solutions evolved into a groundbreaking branded entertainment property that not only struck a chord with viewers and consumers alike, but also delivered huge dividends for our advertisers,” said Tom Maney, senior vice president of advertising sales for Fox Sports en Español. “We are delighted to share this award with our partners at Vidal, Animus Group, Zeal Productions, and Nissan North America as it’s a perfect example of the true power of collaboration and what can happen when you put clients and viewers first.”

In 1997, Mexico and the U.S. competed against each other twice to qualify for the 1998 World Cup. Both games resulted in a draw. “El Reto Final Nissan,” a five-part reality show that aired exclusively in Spanish on Fox Sports en Español in April and May 2006, tells the story of the original matches and of the intense competition that characterizes them through archival footage of the games and interviews with the players and devoted fans. In five, unscripted episodes, players who qualified for the U.S. and Mexico teams nine years ago were ambushed, persuaded to join their former colleagues, and put through intense training sessions and practices to prepare them for the ultimate rematch.

El Reto Final 2, the second installment of the branded entertainment program which will pit former World Cup teams from Mexico and Argentina, will debut on Fox Sports en Español in April of this year.

The NAMIC Vision Awards is the only industry event of its kind to honor cable television entities that have demonstrated a commitment to producing quality, multi-ethnic and cross-cultural programming content. The Vision Awards are judged by professionals from the entertainment industry, media, education and civic community. In addition to foreign-language, categories include comedy, drama, music and variety, news and information, children’s programming, documentary and comedic and dramatic performance, among others.

Fox Sports en Español’s Premios Fox Sports, the network’s signature annual awards show honoring the contributions and accomplishments of U.S. Hispanic and Latin American athletes, was also recognized as NAMIC’s “Best Foreign Language Program” in 2005. “El Reto Final Nissan” previously nabbed “Best Variety or Reality Show” honors at last year’s Annual Imagen Awards.

About Fox Sports en Español

Fox Sports en Español features more than 1,500 hours of live, exclusive sports programming in Spanish and, with few exceptions, English SAP each year, including InterLigaTM, the Copa Toyota Libertadores, Copa Nissan Sudamericana, CONCACAF Copa de Campeones, and the FIFA Club World Cup soccer tournaments; the Major League Baseball playoffs, All-Star Game and World Series; the Caribbean World Series; and premier combat sports including championship boxing from Mexico and the U.S., Ultimate Fighting Championship and kickboxing. The channel reaches more than 13 million cable and satellite households in the country, of which 4.5 million are U.S. Hispanic households.

"The Chicano and Latino Studies Department at CSULB was honored in September at the 10th annual Nuestra Imagen Awards Benefit as the 2006 recipient of Excellence in Higher Education Service Award. Sponsored by the Long Beach Centro Community Hispanic Association (CHA), the award recognizes the department’s importance for first-generation college students and for those who come from working-class families. Proceeds from the awards event benefit low-income Hispanic youth, families and neighborhoods in Long Beach.

“We’re very pleased to receive this award,” said department chair Victor Rodriguez. “This award represents recognition of work done by our faculty and students for the last 36 years, and it recognizes this department’s commitment to working with the Long Beach community. It is doubly gratifying to be recognized for doing what is already the department’s mission. This is very exciting.”"
